I'll play as well.
Doesn't this "choose 2 cards" thing further give the next 1p an even larger advantage than normal? (examples: Treasure Map / Warehouse, Tournament / Ambassador, KC / Bridge, Torturer / $village, $card / chapel?
-
i'm in.
-
Just to clarify, you use both "match" and "game" in the explanation of the twist rule. I'm guessing you can use the same card(s) in round 2 that you used in round 1, should you win round 1, yes?
-
Yes.
-
Although the "may choose 2 cards" looks like a fun twist, it actually isn't.
If I were to participate, I'd always choose Sea Hag and Ill-Gotten Gains and know my opponent is screwed in most cases. So this won't result in interesting games at all.

Apart from you can only do that once per match.

What are the odds that this tournament finishes before iso goes down?
-
I'm in though jonts26 has a good point. If iso goes down could we feasibly finish it in the official release? (assuming we all can run it and are willing to buy it)
-
The people who could answer your question are keeping mum, so I am operating under the assumption that we will finish. As Ted Kennedy once said, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.
-
Yes, I'll do it once each match and as the tournament progresses everyone will start doing it, creating 2 games in each match that are uninteresting.
I do like the idea of a twist, but make it a different one. Some ideas:
-A few days before the match each player chooses a pre-constructed Kingdom (from the expansions, or one from the dominionstrategy tournament). Both players can then study both Kingdoms and try to find the optimal strategy for that specific Kingdom which is a slightly different skill than deciding a strategy on the spot.
-add one multi-player game to each match (finding volunteers might not be easy or practical). Whoever finishes higher in that game is the winner (the volunteer might actually win that game)
-add one game where the goal isn't to win the game (VP), but to reach one of the Councilroom goals (like "piledriver" or "Oscar the grouch"). Whoever gets it, or gets it first, wins that game.
-
I'll play if there's still room.
As for the twist, I think it's a mistake. Why give the about-to-be-first-player an even greater advantage? If you're determined to do it, I'd prefer if both players got to pick two cards, with the rest of the kingdom random. And of course it should not be revealed which cards were selected by the other player, and in the event both pick the same card, just add another at random.

I'm interested in playing. I'm not sure I like the variant, but you never know until you try it right?
-
I'll gladly defend the title :)
-
I think I will contribute. And I'm not sure about this format too. Just a reminder: The matches won't count for the isotropic level if there are constraints.
When will this start?

I haven't the slightest clue.

Hm that's true, didn't consider that.
I'm unregistering, wasn't a fan of the twist thing anyway.

Eh... I'm going to have to unregister as well, sorry.

I would volunteer for this. Chance to play against the best without the added pressure of a tournament? Sounds like my cup of tea.

i have a feeling Mean Mr. Mustard might adjust the rules based on the feedback so far. and for what it's worth, i think dropping out because the games won't count towards rankings is quite silly relative to the earlier comments. there is a chance that isotropic might not even be around long enough to finish the tournament, at which point the rankings are worthless anyway.

I'm not dropping out just because of the ranking, but that combined with all the other reasons.

I'd like to sign up if there's a spot
Also for really random twist-add one multi-player game to each match (finding volunteers might not be easy or practical). Whoever finishes higher in that game is the winner (the volunteer might actually win that game)
If we really wanna go bonkers, 2 v 2? The idea that you would need to add both players points to win. Of course there would be 'friendly fire' and getting people's seatings would be tough (ie. winners going 2nd/4th). Just thought i'd throw it out there

I would like to join. However, are you going to change the rules? This one has many easy exploits.

I would like to sign up.
Please don't tell me I missed this...I already missed the Dominion Strategy Championship :(
edit: The twist sounds a bit odd though...
-
Along with the rest, i am in if room is available

Okay, folks. If everyone hates the idea I will gladly change the format. Just looking for ways to keep things fresh... would it be better if each round began with a custom set chosen from, say, an interesting match from the main tournament? Or if we as a group choose one custom set per week, submitted and discussed in this thread?
Work with me guys, I am all ears.
-
Didn't Theory say he was gonna post the submissions to the Kingdom Challenge, along with some comments (*edit* here (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=1016.msg21104#msg21104))? If they're out in time (or even if they're only out in time for the later rounds), we could play some of the ones that looked interesting but didn't make it into the main tournament.
-
I think having a mandatory "first set" for each round is a cool idea, and that there are many ways to make it work.
Probably the simplest is to generate these sets randomly each round (or, as A_S00 suggested, pulling them from the Kingdom Challenge), possibly retiring each individual card from said set after each round to keep things fresh. Every week we could have a new thread in which logs from each of these games (given 32 players: all 16 in round one, all 8 in round two, etc.) are compiled and everyone could have a discussion about what strategies worked and didn't on that particular board.
-
I'm in.
I like Perd's idea. First game of every round played using the same set.
One potential amendment: it could be announced well in advance, and there could even be a thread here devoted to discussing it before people play. The simulators could run some simulations, people could play it with friends, etc. I think that would be fun.
-
I'm interested in competing.
-
Idea: A pool of boards that have multiple strategies that could work as non can be deemed as being dominant without lots of testing, and even then. Maybe this as part of another idea though. Like having this for the finals matches only/mainly and having them not revealed to the players until the actual matches are about to begin(less time to prepare ;)).
-boards with only cards from certain sets+the basics/Colonies. Example: Alchemy board, Dominion board, Intrigue board, Prosperity board, etc.
-boards where some of the weakest cards in the game show their true situational powers
-boards where some of the best cards in the game can lose to pure BM
-board where bridge/native village are on the field but their counter is also on the field.
-board where there is a ton of attacks.... and a farmland.
-board where there is a ton of cards that are 2 kinds of cards/have special effects etc.
examples include but are not limited to: Fool's Gold, Gardens, Silk Road, and Duke.
-Remember this is just brain storming. None or all of this can be used. I won't really care lol. I just thought this up in 10 minutes =P
-
I like the idea of the rounds each representing limited Dominion sets. Or themes, like round one: Curse Round. round two: Speed Round. round three: Colony Round.
Just throwing this out there: what if we choose one set and each round is played until the victor wins +2 games?
-
If there's still room, throw me in. Otherwise I'm fine sitting this one out and letting someone get in on the action.
-
I'm also in if there is still room :)

I think there are around 30 people joined now, a few more and we'll start the seeding.

I'd be in, too, if there is one slot left.

Here's my idea for a twist. Instead of having the players choose specific cards. Have each game be biased toward a certain expansion. First game base, second intrigue, third seaside, until hinterlands. Or have players alternately choose the biased set with no repeats. We currently have 7 expansion so I suppose if more games are necessary, players could each choose 1 expansion and both would be present for the bias in the extra game.
-
I would like to play in this
-
Okay, added a poll to expire in three days, at which time I will seed. We need a lot more people to make 64, so feel free to sign up. I will compile the player pool as fairly as I can, and may hold a qualifying round to make a final round number.
Thanks!

Great! Are our geographic locations relevant at all?

I'd love to play, if there's a spot. New to the forums, but I've been lurking for a while... :)

Tonight at midnight EST I will begin compiling the player pool. Qualifying round will begin on Monday. SO there is still time to sign up. Thanks.
