Title: Is an "Undo" button feasible?
Post by: CG19 on February 23, 2016, 02:35:09 pm
I was thinking about the addition of an Undo button for online Dominion the other day. And how many lives could be saved by reducing misclicks.

The problem is, you can only do this for certain cards. Some cards will reveal information or cause your opponent to mess up. For example, you accidentally play a Laboratory and see the next 2 cards. You can't just undo that. You've seen the future! Your Wishing Well guess is golden! Or someone plays an Urchin and you accidentally discard the wrong card. But if you try to undo, you're opponent is already clicking on their next card. See the problem here?

Does that mean an Undo button isn't possible? Maybe it would only be available for certain cards. Or is there an edge case to everything?

Possible times an undo button might work:
1. Trashing: Masquerade, Chapel (unless you trash Cultist or Overgrown Estate)
2. Coin/Action/Buy Cards Only: Woodcutter, Horse Traders, Festival, Fishing Village
3. Gainers: Workshop, Ironworks (undo before you gain)

I could go on, but is it even worth it? I'm torn on this one.

I would prefer the option to have to double click when you do decisions you might regret (misclicks) like Isotropic did.
Confirm to pass/discard/trash (for no benefit) a card costing (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/3/32/Coin3.png/16px-Coin3.png) or more, play Treasures with Counterfeit or Contraband in play, play Coppers when you could buy GM etc.
This seems to be easier to implement than an undo button, also you could use it in some situations you could not use an undo button.

Iso let you undo certain things but I can't remember exactly what.

Iso let you under paying most Treasures. I think that was it.

Iso (by the very end) let you undo anythign that didn't reveal hidden information, which is the ideal in a game like this for me.  There's no particular reason why you shouldn't be able to freely undo back to the last point you revealed something new.

Try this argument at a chess tournament ...

When you moved you Knight to e4 you revealed the information that your queen was, in fact, hanging, and so no way am I letting you use that information now to save your queen.

Note: Hanging = threatened.

Unless you're talking about a not publically available version, I'm pretty sure this is false and you could only undo playing treasures.

Also, Iso use to warn you when you were about to trash something that didn't seem to make sense to trash - I still miss that feature in way too many games.

Undoing stuff that showed information to your opponent is hardly an issue.  That's your fault and doesn't benefit you.  It's only undoing stuff that gave YOU new information that would be a problem.

Like, I play Chapel, trash some things, immediately realise I didn't want to, and undo it.  My opponent knows I have a Chapel in hand now.  Strictly he shouldn't know that.  But I gain no benefit from him knowing it, so where's the harm.  He gains a minor benefit, sure, but the minor gameplay imbalance might well be worth it for the misclick minimisation.

Confirmation buttons are still probably better though.

You'll get nothing and like it.

I hear Donald is implementing the undo button himself in the online server sometime next year.

Is Donald X himself developing the fourth iteration of Dominion Online? Whoa.

No, I was making a joke about Donald getting new devs.
