Title: All the peddlers
Post by: paulbaxter on June 22, 2011, 02:12:22 pm
What would be the fewest number of turns required to buy all the peddlers in a game?
(I haven't tried to work this out myself, I just have been wondering about it)

Solitaire?  With multiple players?  Between multiple players?

I have a solution that gets all 10 by the end of the 6th turn with perfect shuffling.  Do spoiler tags work on this forum?

I guess I was thinking solitaire, but feel free to explore multiple paths.

Yes they do

It has to be Turn 5 or less, because you can get 8 Colonies (and then some) by the end of Turn 5 (http://dominionstrategy.com/2011/05/06/dominion-puzzle-1-solution/).

Got turn 5 very simply:

T1: Talisman
T2: Pawn
T3: Worker's Village
T4: Pawn for card money, drawing 4 incl. Talisman, buy 2 Worker's Villages
T5: Pawn for action+buy, WV, WV, WV, Talisman, buy 5 peddlers gaining 5 more

I can get 6 Peddlers on turn 4, which naturally extends to 10 (12, if there were that many) on turn 5.

T1: Hamlet
T2: CouncilRoom
T3: Play Hamlet (discard Estate for +Buy) + Council Room; Buy Talisman + Pawn.  (2 cards left in deck after this)
T4: Hamlet (discard 2 Estates for +Action +Buy), + Council Room (drawing 2 Copper + Talisman + Pawn) + Pawn ($1 + Buy), buy 3 Peddlers = 6.

If only there was a card that was +1 Action / + 1 Buy that cost $1 to buy :(

another solution for 6 by turn 4 would be this

Turn 1: Buy Chancellor
Turn 2: Buy Talisman
Turn 3: Play Chancellor, discard deck. Play talisman, buy WV, gain another.
Turn 4: Play two WV and chancellor. Play talisman and 3 coppers. 6$, 3 buys, 3 actions played and talisman=6 peddlers.

EDIT: oops, should have enclosed it in spoiler tag, I guess, although it's not a solution.

A slight variation on some of the above solutions, for 20 Peddlers on turn 5:

Talisman/Chancellor
Chancellor + Talisman, buy Talisman, gain Talisman
Chancellor + 3xTalisman, buy WV, gain 3xWV
WVx4, play 3xTalisman, buy 5 Peddlers, gain 15 Peddlers.

I don't actually try talisman all that much. Does that actually work?

What do you mean by 'work'? If you mean 'is that how multiple copies of Talisman work under the rules' then yes, definitely.

If you mean 'is Talisman a good card in actual play' then, well, sometimes. It's kind of rare that buying 2 is a good idea, since any pile <=4 that's that desirable is going to run out amazingly quickly anyway. But maybe if there's like Fishing Village, Caravan, AND Tournament, or something crazy like that...

Well, and the fact that there are still only 10 Peddlers to gain. Talisman doesn't create extra copies or anything.
