Title: Cards for Dominion over lunch
Post by: AHoppy on February 10, 2016, 12:33:20 pm
I've found a co-worker willing to play Dominion over lunch (hooray!). I don't bring my whole box of cards with me because it's too big. So I have a separate box that fits just over 50 cards.  I want to bring a set of 50 cards that creates interesting kingdoms, but I also don't want any cards that require extra bits (coin tokens, cardboard tokens, VP tokens, potions, ruins, etc.) I also want games that can be played in under an hour so I'd shy away from junking, or at least include a trasher if I use them. My opponent is t as well versed in Dominion, so he's not the fastest. Any suggestions for sets of 50 cards? Or at least ratios of categories? When I made the set I have now, I went randomly through my box and grabbed what seemed to be enginey cards, but I have almost too many villages.

One alt-VP on each board is nice, as it gives other options and such.

Events are easy to carry around and make the game interesting, but for a shorter game I obviously don't recommond Mission!

Reactions are nice, I've found people not as well versed in Dominion enjoy reacting. I do, too.

Of course I'll recommond Scout.

I don't recommond Rebuild or Saboteur for obvious reasons. Shelters are fun. Rats are fun.

But be careful not to use The Fine Bros' intellectual property without their permission while you react.

Can't be Goons because it has tokens. But something like Outpost would be pretty nice to have in there.

But really if he is a new player, just look at some of the suggested kingdoms from the various rulebooks and include a bunch of those cards.

Really just make sure you have villages, draw, trashing, cursing, duration, alt-vp....enough to show the whole spectrum of cards

Probably avoid cards that take a long time to resolve our involve a lot of decisions, I.e. most of alchemy

He's not new, but is only familiar with base, and dark ages I think.

I like the rulebook suggested kingdom suggestion, I'll do that

Possession has potion

Alt VP is a good idea, so far the 3 games we've played have been obviously massive engines, which is fine, but something not so obvious would be good too. Alt vp could help that

It would probably be interesting for an intermediate player to see how megaturn strategies work: crush him with HoP, or with KC/Bridge, or Hermit/Market Square maybe..
Also, don't bring Ghost Ship or Hag :)

Throw in
[...]
Governor
Salvager
Remake

Good list, but I'd switch out one of these three (preferably Governor) for Remodel. Salvager does a great job at filling the "Trasher with end-game shenaningans" place, but it's such a big part of basic-intermediate Dominion strategy that I think a Remodeler's presence is warranted, and Governor is way too wierd and slow (short games, long decisions) to be only remodeler I'd want to play with at lunch.

Done some megaturn shenanigans with highway/ironworks.

Unfortunately the only promos I have are summon and walled village...

I like the list wero! I won't be able to play tomorrow, but I'll let you know what I decide for Friday's game. Might even jeep track of the games and progress here for kicks.

Just bring Hinterlands and Seaside. Those are the simple & fun expansions and your playing partner will notice all the themes synergies of those expansions.

So here's what's in the box right now:

all Hinterlands
all Seaside cards that don't require coins/mats/extra cards
all Adventures cards that don't require coins/mats/extra cards
all events that don't require coins/mats/extra tokens
maybe some cornucopia?  I can't really remember.  I may have cherry picked some fun stuff like HoP, and I definitely grabbed some extra alt VP cards.  My thanks go out to iguanaiguana and Roadrunner.  And anyone else who sees some of their suggestions in here.

Our first (and only game thus far) with this selection was:

This was the first time my friend had looked at a lot of these cards.  This is also the first board we played that wasn't an obvious engine (or really an engine at all).  He also dismissed Silk Roads as being worse than Gardens because it only counts your green cards instead of your whole deck.  When I pointed out that it requires fewer cards to power up and they self-synergize, he was still skeptical.  If I recall correctly, I opened Remake JoaT (using alms) and I think he may have even opened the same.  He ended up just doing Treasure Trove BM (I think he had 4 or 5 of them by the end) and I got a ton of remakes and went after silk roads, trashing silvers off JoaT into SR, turning remakes into duchies, and getting the other SR with alms.  He missed that I dipped for them so early and I ended up getting all 8 SR's and ending the game on SR, duchy (from trashing remake & SR into duchy) and remake.  This was actually my first game with Alms I think, and I think it really made the event shine.  Oh, I also picked up a Treasure Trove, but it wasn't actually any good because I kept using alms.  I think I only played it once.  It was a good way to show my friend the power of alt-vp, and how to start watching for 3-piles.  I think I'm going to start making him talk through the set before we start playing to see what he thinks.

I thought this thread was going to be the sad story of AHoppy skipping lunch in order to be able to afford more Dominion cards.

I like to think the reality is a much happier story
