Title: Inventor -possible +1 Action, +4 Cards w/drawbacks
Post by: LibraryAdventurer on January 19, 2016, 01:28:02 am
Thought of this too late for the Adventures set contest, so I thought I'd post it on its own.

Quote
Inventor
Cost $5 - Action
You may draw 3 cards. If you do, at the end of your clean-up phase take your -1 card token. You may trash a card costing at least $3. If you do, +1 Card, +1 Action. If you don't do either one, +$1.
Inventions are expensive and inventors are demanding, but they can produce big benefits.

Interesting. In the absence of gainers it is more or less unplayable (unless the Kingdom is such that you direly need a terminal draw which is worse than a Smithy but costs more) but with gainers the card does shine without being overpowered.

hm. Maybe it could be "If you don't do either one, gain a silver (into your hand?)."

I think in general this could cost $4 (the draw option is worse than Smithy), but the problem is it is crazy OP with Fortress

I think with "If you don't do either one, gain a silver into your hand", it would be strong enough for $5. That way, as it's most basic, it's an unactivated explorer. But you can sacrifice to make it +4 Cards, +1 Action.

Fortress is fortress. It's ability exists to make other cards crazy in combination with it.

What happen if you choose to draw but do not draw 3 cards (not enough card in deck, - card token)?  Does it count towards the "If you don't do either one"?

This sounds more like +2 cards, +1 action. Between taking the -card token and trashing a non-junk card from your hand, you net 2 cards, not 4.

Is the likelihood of a player using their 5$ action as a terminal copper really worth the additional words and confusion on the card?  I thought "if you don't do either one" referred to either the +action or +card on my first couple of reads.  Not that that's a reasonable interpretation, but the 2/10,000 plays where this is used as a terminal copper doesn't seem worth the noise anyway.

An updated & simplified version of this card:

Quote
Inventor
$5 cost - Action
+1 Card. +1 Action.
You may trash a card costing at least $2. If you do, +2 cards. Otherwise, gain a silver.
