EDIT:
New team allocations:
Blue team: ipofanes, Kuildeous, egorK
Red Team: rspeer, gkrieg13, ashersky
current words:
CONCERT BILL EMBASSY JUPITER PIPE
EYE TEACHER TRUNK WORM BUGLE
HAM RABBIT SATURN EARTH AGENT
RULER WAVE SNOWMAN TORCH FRANCE
CYCLE DEGREE FORCE LONDON COMPOUND
Red goes first
Welcome to the 6P Codenames version. Table talk between players is allowed and encouraged in this forum, dear agents: please put talk between spoiler tags and dear spymaster: please don't click on them.
Once one member of the agent team commits to guessing, she enters the word in bold and unspoilered. Either spymaster can verify the guess.
I have randomised (except for my position as spymaster) the players into the following arrangement:
Red Team:
- ehunt
- egork
- ipofanes (Spymaster)
Blue Team:
- Kuildeous
- ashersky
- gkrieg13 (Spymaster)
Blue goes firstFINGER | BELL | BOMB | BUFFALO | BOOM |
DIAMOND | ROULETTE | PICK | TRIANGLE | KING |
COMPOUND | IRON | BRAZIL | BARK | DAY |
STRING | CAP | LOCK | CRASH | HAND |
POINT | HORN | WELL | DANCE | BOW |
gkrieg will be unblinded in a minute.
-
Woot.
-
Doesn't Red usually go first? I guess it doesn't matter as long as the starting team gets an extra word.
-
Blue teammate -- any ground rules? I'm fine with either of us submitting official guesses if we are super sure/it is obvious. When it isn't obvious, talking it through it helpful. What do you think?
-
I still need the map?
-
I still need the map?
huh. Is thre a way for me to look at my sent messages? Otherwise, the map would be toast.
-
Yes. Just go to the messages tab. It should be easy to find
-
hello red teammate: since I'm in Europe, our times may be off. So why don't we do this for a strategy: when we get a clue, the first person to arrive at a thread lists their guesses in spoiler text. The other makes those guesses publicly if they agree. That way we both get to make guesses, but we don't have to wait a billion hours for each turn while we form a consensus.
EDIT: CONFUSED STRIKETHROUGH AND SPOILER COMMANDS!
-
The randomiser randomises who goes first and who gets one word less.
I just realised that unlike Boardgamegeek, the spoiler unveals on mouseover, not on click. Oh well, have to get used to scroll bars I think.
-
car: 2
-
I'm thinking
crash
bomb
What do you think?

I'm also on euro time (though has a trip to US next week) so we should be fine. Tactics seems sound
-
I'm thinking
crash
bomb
What do you think?
I'm thinking HORN rather than BOMB. I see merit in what you're saying, but I think HORN is more likely to be associated with a car.
But I agree with you on CRASH and would be okay with making that our first guess.
-
Man, I'm one of those who overthinks things and talks things out. I may be handing victory to the red team if I'm not careful.

crash

I didn't think of car at all with HORN, but see it now. Car bomb is, unfortunately, the first thing to come to mind nowadays. I'm okay with either guess.

crash
crash is blue.

Seems like BUFFALO, BARK and, idk, KING or BRAZIL?
-
Buffalo
I came up with exactly your set of 4 guesses. The only other one that I can fit is HAND (well, and HORN, but that's confirmed blue...) You pick the next from our guess list, that way I can avoid blame if it's wrong :-)
-
BUFFALO is red
FINGER | BELL | BOMB | BUFFALO | BOOM |

I think King is more likely than Brazil, and more unlikely to be assasin
-
Bark
I think King is more likely than Brazil, and more unlikely to be assasin
I agree with your logic, and I doubt hand/finger are right because then there are too many matches. If Bark is wrong then I think hand/finger are more likely than Brazil. If Bark is right, once Bark is confirmed whichever of us is online should go ahead and guess King.
-
Bark is Red

King

I guess we'll pass after this

Ha, ha, I looked at the list before reading your speculation, so I know my thought process wasn't corrupted. I agree on both of them.

Seems unnecessary to make another guess since we so far have matched the number given by gkrieg, so Pass.
-
Jester 4
-
our codemaster likes to go broad! theoretically we can win the game here...
possible fits for Jester (besides king and crash, which are gone) include
(good): DANCE
(ok): BOW BELL ROULETTE
(tangential): FINGER HAND BOOM
jester, man, that's weird, there's something i must be missing. really any performer would have cued all of my top 4 guesses above, why something specific like jester? for the dominion card? (no other dominion cards on the board). he's not allowed to give a "sounds like" clue, right?
-
omg i am such a noob, CAP is the obvious one
-
Dance
Cap and bow both seems good, I'm also thinking about finger pointing, which would be 2 clues. Idk though
-
DANCE is red
-
Cap
-
oh, look at the artwork on the Jester card! I think it cues HAND and BELL pretty well.

assuming hand is right, do we want to pass, guess brazil, or guess finger? (i was confused before when I said we could win). at the moment i lean lightly toward pass.

After that...good DAY? good POINT?
Messed up spoiler tag.

ok, so we get three guesses. we have one mammal left and one jester left. we're almost certain to lose if we let them get another turn so we should go for it. BOMB is a clear weapon. my second favorite is BOW. (answers i would also consider, which are weaker: BOOM, STRING).if that theory is correct, then the last jester clue was probably BOW, so we should guess the last mammal clue with our third.
-
correction to my last post: there are two jester clues left. not sure i get what's going on anymore. in any event i say we guess the obvious weapon (bomb) and debate more about what the last is.
-
Bow is also obvious weapon and can be one from mammal (i. e. you are hunting with bow Finger as last jester crew? You make jests with fingers
Bomb
-
I meant gestures. And gestures sounds almost like jester
-
BOMB is red
-
bow
i'm scared about finger, but I don't have a better guess yet. Let's talk for a second. My problem with a "jester/gesture" pun is that one also gestures with ones hands. (For that matter, a gesture is a way to POINT...) Like, if our last clue was finger, Ipofanes would've needed to've found some clue that clued FINGER but specifically didn't clue HAND (which was not just a non-word but actively bad for us to guess). And neither Jester nor Mammal can unambiguously be said to single out FINGER and not HAND. I would think that if Ipofanes had been trying to clue FINGER with either of those, he would have been more careful about hand. which in turn makes me think finger isn't one of the answers. But the flip-side is I don't have a better guess.
I agree with you that BOW could relate to a mammal, so there might not be a 3rd "mammal" to find. A jester could also take a bow, if necessary. But that still leaves us one jester clue we straight-up haven't found. in conclusion:
FINGER COMPOUND STRING POINT ROULETTE PICK BRAZIL LOCK TRIANGLE BOOM
of these, one has to relate to jester, and one might relate to mammal. none should relate to weapons, which weakly takes out "boom" for me. i'm really not seeing anything...
feel free to vote for your best guess at this point, I'm clueless and won't blame you if it's wrong! There's no need to drag this out if neither of us knows what's going on.
-
note that if i had to guess right now i would guess finger in spite of my last post. it's the only thing i can find that fits. maybe ipofanes just didn't notice hand.

BOW is red

The suspense is killing me.
I hope it'll last.

good game. That one was hard! i felt like nothung went together that well

FINGER is red
Red team wins.
Woot.
gg! did jester clue finger b/c of the picture on the dominion card, or b/c of gesture/jester pun?
-
Some mammals have fingers, that was the third clue of mammals.
I figured you'd be stuck between hand and finger after an easy Buffalo/bark, so you'd pass and save the decision for later until either one is cleared. Of king I haven't thought, of course, mammals are a kingdom. After king was cleared jester occurred to me after I had planned to connect "dance" and "bow", always thinking of a formal dance until I thought of a playful bow of a jester after the end of a dance display.
Had you got bow and left me with finger and bomb, I'd have gone for "Auric 2". Couldn't think of anything to match bomb and bow with finger (maybe trigger, now I think of it, but that would have led to point) so I just crossed mine that you would find it as a leftover.
This setting was quite a bitch. Point and pick and finger, crash and boom, hand and finger, all of different colours of course.
Now excuse me while I read the spoilers.
-
Solution:
FINGER | BELL | BOMB | BUFFALO | BOOM |
DIAMOND | ROULETTE | PICK | TRIANGLE | KING |
COMPOUND | IRON | BRAZIL | BARK | DAY |
STRING | CAP | LOCK | CRASH | HAND |
POINT | HORN | WELL | DANCE | BOW |

Who was describing himself as tending to overthink things?
That was nicely played. I nominate ehunt the new spymaster for Red.
-
If we follow tradition, we play again with new spymasters. Looking at the list, if ehunt is the next spymaster, then I suppose I would be blue's. Then we can play another one with the remaining players as spymasters.

definitely up for another game. I think ashersky said he wanted to be spymaster next? Either way works for me

I did, but will play no matter what.
-
Sorry, I missed that. Well, we can do ehunt and asherky. Then the remaining people will be spymasters in the next game.

I'd be fine with this mode too. I don't think we give anything away if we announce it openly before the game has started.
-
im sorry, i couldnt take the suspense anymore. don't be mad partner!!
I gather that EgorK was on his USA trip. For me though, it usually means more internet activity during ungodly jetlagged waking hours!
-
I'm sorry, I think I'm going to have to back out for time reasons! I didn't realize there would be 3 rounds. If you can't find a replacement reasonably fast, I can do it.
-
I don't have a problem. If someone wants to hunt a replacement, that'd be fun. Otherwise, maybe we can take it to the general call and start a new game.
-
I think there is someone in the joining thread that wanted in.
-
That was me -- I'm interested in joining.
-
So you take ehunts spot and we're ready to start again?
-
I approve this plan.
-
Brilliant. ehunt's spot means head of spydom. So you are free to generate a new pattern and share it with ashersky.

Is this directed at me? Can you elaborate?

Basically, one of the spymasters follows the instructions in http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=14004.msg535889#msg535889
-
Okay, I think I get it.
Blue goes firstPOOL | AUSTRALIA | MINE | THUMB | SCHOOL |

BAND | RIVER | CLOUD | SINK | COTTON |
BUCK | CORNER | DIAMOND | HORN | TRIP |

Two Dominion cards. Last time looking at the artwork of Jester was the wrong idea.
-
telescope: 2
-
Well, I would say STAR for certain. I'm feeling pretty good about ROOF, but I could be persuaded otherwise.
-
star
i thought ship because they always have a telescope on a ship. I could see roof though.
-
Star is blue.
-
Yeah, SHIP is a pretty compelling argument.
I suppose we could pass and see if the other spymaster reveals a little more. It shouldn't be too costly. But if you disagree, I will not be upset if you guess SHIP.
-
ship
i think it's better to just go for it at the beginning.
-
ship is red. Red's turn.
-
sorry about that!
-
We'll make it up.
*shakes fist at red for whatever they just did*
-
animal: 4
-
buck, hawk, horn. 4th - tumb or milk?

i bet it was cloud. Ugh
-
i bet it was cloud. Ugh
I'm dubious about that. It just doesn't sound right to me, though maybe I'm just really ignorant about telescopes.
-
I aqm super confident about HAWK and very certain about BUCK and HORN. After that, MILK has a small edge over THUMB but I would save the 4th guess for later. So feel free to guess the three in that order.
-
hawk
-
HAWK is red.
-
HORN
-
i think it's better to just go for it at the beginning.
not sure. I prefer to stop short on first term, to make more use of extra guesses at a time when more is known. Given BUCK and HORN are correct, I'd really stop until we know more about whether to choose THUMB or MILK.
-
HORN is red.

bus: 3
-
Damn, we have eliminated HORN as the red (nudge nudge, get it?) herring for bus.
-
I would definitely say SCHOOL and TRIP. I have a thought on the third one, but I'll mull it over. I'm not thrilled with it.
-
Also there is a rock band called Animals. So this could be band as well
I'd be with you had the clue been "animals". I'd rule it out for the singular form. I like MILK more than THUMB a lot more than BAND.
-
school
i would say the other two are trip and roof
-
I was thinking POOL like carpooling but with buses. I think that may be too much of a stretch. But you're right that buses have roofs.
Something else that struck me is that bands tour on buses. So maybe it is BAND.
We're at least in agreement that the second word should be TRIP. We can tackle the third word and probably the fourth, since we can't afford to be conservative at this stage.
-
School is blue.
-
trip
i still think roof is more likely. But I was wrong on the last one.
-
Trip is blue.
-
Roof
I remain skeptical, but I am hoping that this plus the telescope clue cinches this one. The big question is if we should pass or not if we are right. I'm banking on this one being the crossover clue.
Or we could just go for broke and guess BAND. We're behind, but I don't know that we're behind enough to swing wildly.
-
Roof is blue.
-
not surprised with bus and telescope as clues
-
I think we're done here. Like I said, POOL is possible, but I consider it pretty weak. I'm willing to wait; we are only 1 behind Red now.
-
pass
Ya I think we just need to wait for another clue. I would say that cloud could have been the telescope clue.

music: 3
-
I see note and band. And then maybe kiss?
-
I agree with BAND and NOTE. I'm leaning toward AGENT for the third because big musicians have agents. I'm not attached to it very heavily though. Maybe he's going for Neil DIAMOND, but I find that connection kind of tenuous. I think we'll have to go with a third guess since they are two away from winning. We'll burn that bridge when we get there. I'll keep mulling it over. Aside from the song, why does KISS stick in your mind?
Note
-
The band. I think they are well-known enough. I could see AGENT, but I don't think it is Neil DIAMOND
-
Ah, and of course KISS is a band as well. Hmm, also, you can store music in a CLOUD. See, I overthink things.

I thought it was 7/8
-
It is 8/9. So Blue has 9 words, and Red has 8.
So, being that the spymasters cannot hear us, we have an assumption to make. Do we pass on the third word and hope that ashersky will give a clue for the remaining two words? Hopefully he would not interpret passing to mean that he should give us a hint for this unknown word (unless he can actually work it in there). Or should we go for it with KISS?
-
Band is blue.
-
Note is Blue.
Miles Davis is smiling down from heaven.
-

Indeed, we have two to go, one is left from animal, but I trust in our spymaster to give us a clue which unequivocally points to the other card and gives a hint towards the animal one.
-
i would rather go for it. But I was wrong on the last one so I'll let you make that call.
-
Sure, why not?
KISS
-
Kiss is neutral.

Red's turn:
tit: 2
-
Milk for sure. Witch?
-
Ouch, I was hoping for a penalty kick.
This could be the bird or the female organ. If the female breast is meant exclusively, he could have chosen a less colloquial term. Milk should be a safe bet, but then the animal hint is gone, and we're on our own for the second guess. Witches have tits. Would there be a more fitting clue for WITCH and MILK? Milk doesn't readily associate with Cauldron, for instance. So I would go for WITCH as a second guess, but I am feeling less comfortable than I thought I would.
-
MILK
-
On the other hand Australians robin were first confused with tit birds. So this possibly is Australia

Good game.
-
Kuildeous was all over my clues, but didn't guess the words he figured out.
He had ROOF for Telescope, BAND for Bus, and DIAMOND for music.
I felt like I had some tough groupings on the blue words.
-
I'll note, I wanted to use "rock" for rock STAR, rock BAND, DIAMOND, and SCHOOL of rock, but feared the MINE.
-
Good game. After the SHIP guess it was hard to catch up.
I wonder if mint 1 would have been a clue that MINE is the assassin.
DIAMOND is not too flexible a turn that I could see emerging groupthink that it may well refer to the singer. Note that he is considerably popular (but still popular) in Europe than in North America.
-
That makes Kuildeous and egorK the new spymasters. Please randomize a pattern where red goes first. I sense that red might have a bit of an advantage as it is a bit hard but possible to clear 8 words in three rounds, while 9 in three rounds is really really tough, and 9 in four rounds is not a walk in the park.
-
As blue, I might have tried and tie up COTTON, BAND and NOTE with bluegrass (or cajun/zydeco) 3, and CORNER, DIAMOND and SCHOOL with geometry 3.
-
As blue, I might have tried and tie up COTTON, BAND and NOTE with bluegrass (or cajun/zydeco) 3, and CORNER, DIAMOND and SCHOOL with geometry 3.
Those are great clues. I was having a hard time with COTTON, actually.
-
I'll note, I wanted to use "rock" for rock STAR, rock BAND, DIAMOND, and SCHOOL of rock, but feared the MINE.
You were right to fear that. I'm sure one of us would have guessed MINE with that clue. So bad luck there with those words.
I suppose I could have been more aggressive in my guessing. I talked myself out of DIAMOND for music because it made sense that KISS was better known. If we had another turn, I might have gone for DIAMOND after having klunked on KISS.
Okay, getting the next game ready.

Okay, table sent to egorK. Here is what we have:
Blue goes firstCOMPOUND | SCHOOL | PIPE | BUCK | WASHER |
DRILL | TABLE | BEAR | ROCK | GENIUS |
STREAM | KANGAROO | MASS | BERRY | REVOLUTION |
ALPS | GERMANY | SMILE | CZECH | LINK |

I'll ponder this a bit.

Wow I was wayyyyyy off that game. Sorry about that!

Mythology: 2
-
Ahem.
I won't be stubborn about this but it seemed like a good idea to me.
-
I'd say definitely GREECE. And BUCK? Could also be SCHOOL, or maybe SATURN? I would probably go with SCHOOL

Ahem.

I'd have to rewrite the code for red to go first.
But even if red does go first, we would then have to randomize which team is red. I figured we could keep the teams the same to avoid confusion.

ok fair enough. I had thought the double agent was coded as well.

I agree with GREECE. I think SATURN is probably the second. Mythology school? Definitely not BUCK.

It is, but only sort of. I don't think of it as a subject you specifically have at school, like math or science. University, maybe. Saturn strikes me as a character out of mythology (Roman) and so a better guess...
-
agreed go to for Saturn. I just have never heard of what God he is but I'm not big on mythology.

ok fair enough. I had thought the double agent was coded as well.
It assigns eight to blue and eight to red. The one in the middle is based on a random number where it's a 50/50 shot of red or blue. Then the colors are assigned based on how many red and blue get. Whoever has nine words always goes first.
I didn't realize that the instructions state that one color always goes first. I went the practical route and made it completely random.

Weimar: 3
-
Good game, all. I feel like that one just kind of landed in my lap.
Give me a bit to figure out what's going on in the new game.
-
Okay, so definitely GERMANY, and almost certainly REVOLUTION as that's how the Weimar Republic came about. Not sure about the third one.
-
I don't agree that a revolution happened in Weimar but this would be my second guess also. My third would be GENIUS, as in genius loci, the spirit of the place where J.W.Goethe, F. Schiller and F. Liszt resided.
-
I find GENIUS to be pretty hard to deduce from Weimar and I don't believe it. These neighboring place to Germany (ALPS and CZECH) are catching my attention but I don't know what relation to Weimar to look for there.
We're allowed to look things up on Google and Wikipedia, right?
-
I think it's ok to spoiler all here:
We're allowed to look things up on Google and Wikipedia, right?
I am doing it all the time.
-
I still stand by GENIUS but SCHOOL may be ok too as Bauhaus originated in Weimar. Czech republic is the closest border from Weimar but it is still quite a drive.
-
I think it's ok to spoiler all here:
We're allowed to look things up on Google and Wikipedia, right?
I am doing it all the time.
This was brought up on the main Codenames thread. I think as long as the spymaster isn't intentionally giving a clue with the intent of Google displaying the desired words, that should be fine. I wouldn't expect everyone to know what Weimar is (I didn't). It can help equalize cultural differences. For example, many Americans know of Chicago as the Windy City. So if WIND was one of the words, I might say Chicago, but non-Americans might need to learn a little more about Chicago to get it.
The danger, of course, is that the more you know about a subject, you more false associations you'll have. "Wait, Chicago's on a lake. Did he mean LAKE too?"
-

Yes, I'd use search engines to make up for cultural differences, which in my case may have more to do with cohort than with residence. I should know a bit more about 1980s pop culture than 2010s. I'd have to consult my son to spot a Pokémon reference.
In the last match, as a blue spymaster I might have given euphorbia 2 as the last clue. Not only wouldn't I expect the agents to find the connotations without a dictionary, I wouldn't have brought it up without one (for the scientific name of the plant).
Oh, and on Chicago I'd point to LAKE before WIND, but I'd definitely consider both.
More to the match at hand, I'd expect Americans to be oblivious about the contributions of Czechoslovakia to 1970s children's TV, and to not consider hazelnut or mole as clues for CZECH.
-
Seems our spymaster is bored, so GERMANY
-
Speaking about using Google: clicky (http://www.genius-loci-weimar.org/) I didn't know it existed but I think it kind of drives my point home ...
-
Germany is Red
-
Got it. I guess I believe GENIUS a little bit more now, but looking up the location of the city of Weimar, I also believe CZECH.
But at this point I suggest we just guess REVOLUTION and then pass until we have more information.
-
Frankly, I believe more in GENIUS than in REVOLUTION. But ok. Whether Weimar Republic was brought about by a revolution or a lost war is something rather to be discussed in RSP.
REVOLUTION
-
Revolution is Red

Pass

To my mind, GENIUS > SCHOOL > CZECH.

On Boardgamegeek, players were fine with giving a multi-word book title as a clue (https://boardgamegeek.com/article/20930753#20930753). Personally I don't like it. (I'd even be inclined to oppose full names.) What do you think?
-
I'm not a fan of the idea. Hyphenated words can be slippery enough as it is.
-
Stones: 3
-
Hmmm...well, ROCK for sure. Otherwise...I like STICK (as in sticks and stones), BERRY (I think there is a stoneberry).
Further afield, we have COMPOUND, STREAM, ALPS, MASS...but I don't really like most of those.
I'd definitely say ROCK and STICK are the best bets.
-
ROCK
sticks sounds good to me. I'll have to think about the other ones.

Id say mass for the last one because stone is a unit of mass

What do you think we go for here?
Can we afford to pass and see what he gives us to help with clues?
-
We probably could.
-
Does mass = weight? Stones is a weight measurement in the UK only. I don't know. You make the call -- it's either MASS or pass, I say.
-
Pass
We can go for it later
-
That BGG game is crazy. Giving a multiple-word title as a clue seems clearly against the rules to me.
-
Not meaning to seed any doubt but the Stones were inspired quit a lot by Chuck BERRY.
-
In our game, it would have been detrimental to add Rolling to Stones.
-
Sapindus: 3
-
A genus of shrubs and small trees, commonly known as 'soapberries' or 'soapnuts', whose name comes from 'soap' and 'India'.
Okay, now I definitely believe GENIUS. BERRY is also quite clear. For the third, I'm thinking SOUTH, because it grows in warm regions that are south of most people?
Why Sapindus in particular, though?
-
I don't like EgorK being spymaster. He's all fancy.
-
The order I'd like to guess things in is BERRY, then GENIUS. And we should make a third guess but I'm hoping you find something better than SOUTH.
-
WASHER seems obvious to me. (These berries are sold by Whole Earth kind of shops for washing clothes.) Then BERRY, then GENIUS, and I am uncertain about the 3rd sapindus. I see nothing better than SOUTH but we can save that for next time.
-
I'm actually suggesting that GENIUS fits Sapindus also, as a pun, because Sapindus is a genus. So that lets us not have to guess SOUTH.
-
WASHER
-
Washer is red

GENIUS

Should we go for SOUTH? I am leaning towards yes. If we're lucky, we only have two to clear instead of three, and three are a lot less likely to connect.

We're still ahead but have to hope they don't finish within two rounds.

Since we had this talk, BERRY went red, and we got COMPOUND just now. Anyway to tie the "stones" clue to this one? Stream?

i still think it's mass. I could see buck. Buck is 50/50 with bear for me.

ok, triple or bust. If he gives a 2 clue, I'd go for SOUTH as the extra, for want of something better. Maybe BEAR, as in bearing fruit, but I don't like it much better.
-
Otira: 3
-
Wikipedia says it is a village in New Zealand. So SOUTH has a lot more going for it. So the soapnut clue has been taken care of and we're on our own for the rest.
ALPS should be #2. Railway seems to play quite a role in this village, so maybe LINK?
-
I believe in all of those.
SOUTH

I still need your input on this one. Don't want to waste this match ball alone.

-
What's happening here?
-
Still discussing.
Okay, what about STREAM? Otira is described as a saddle point between two rivers. Seems like a stronger connection than RAILWAY to LINK.
-
ok, STREAM rather than LINK. Looking at the map, it's situated at a river which may pass as a stream. The saddle point is a bit uphill but still within the municipal boundaries. You point at STREAM if there's nothing else you see.

-
Woot!
-
And bear was the assasin
-
ok EgorK, which words did you have in mind when suggesting the clues?
Even if LINK came to my mind as a connection to Otira, I am finding the link rather weak as it's not as if the place lends itself to changing trains. Goppenstein 3 might have done it for me.
-
Go team!
-
Wow, that was a close one. I was worried because Egor's clues were very elaborate. I thought for sure that Blue was done for with the final clue, but that's because from my vantage, I could easily see that he was going for LINK. Of course, when you don't know the colors of the words, it's not as obvious. So we lucked out there.
Looking back, I see how dreadfully close I was to dooming our team. I didn't even think about the bear market in terms of investing. So, 50/50 shot of losing the game early. Good choice, blue.
I wanted to start off ambitious with "poke" to reference DRILL, STICK, and ROCK (admittedly a stretch). But I was certain that someone would pick up on "poke the bear" and end the game.
I thought the team format worked out. There were thought processes that I had not considered that my teammate did. But as we've seen, it was possible to go too far and reverse yourselves. This is an inherent danger in team games like this. I saw it at my in-laws' house last weekend when I introduced the game. Of course it's easier to maintain a poker face online if someone strays. It's more effort to not betray your thoughts when you hear your teammates talk about the assassin word (my cousin-in-law did admirably when her team decided to pick DEATH, which was the assassin word).
Good game. That was really quite close. I knew that if blue couldn't get the last two words then red would swoop in with Connection or some other synonym.
-
Congrats to the blue team. Definitely a good set of games, very instructive how spymaster's style has an impact on the flow.
-
ok EgorK, which words did you have in mind when suggesting the clues?
Even if LINK came to my mind as a connection to Otira, I am finding the link rather weak as it's not as if the place lends itself to changing trains. Goppenstein 3 might have done it for me.
There is railway Otira tunnel.
Well, for some reason when researching that railway through Southern Alps I had not came up with Goppenstein
-
I suppose that while I am not technically against using Wikipedia to find a word, it feels funny to me. I guess it's because if I don't come up with it naturally, it feels dirty to me? Although I would have been tempted to look for a common theme between different places.
I did Google "drill" and "table." I was thinking of using "press" as the clue. I figure that'll get "drill" but not "table." While "drill press table" is a thing, I think that may have been stretching it. Google wasn't too much help with that, as it turns out.
I almost went with "metalworking" since I was still thinking of "drill press table." In addition to "table" still being a stretch, I ran the risk of having "pipe" be guessed, which would have certainly been a loss.
Like I've said before, I tend to overthink these games, but it wasn't so bad here. Certainly, overthinking is better as a spymaster than as a guesser.
-
Finding clue ideas on Google or Wikipedia is a strategy that I don't think we can exclude, without playing a "no research" version of the game that's more like the face-to-face version.
But I think we've just demonstrated that overly specific Wikipedia-based clues can get overly specific Wikipedia-based wrong answers, anyway.
-
By the way we can start another round
-
Im good for another round
-
Since we've gone three rounds (with a substitution), we could shake up the teams a bit. I ran our names through a randomizer and came up with these teams:
Red:
gkrieg13
rspeer
ashersky
Blue:
egork
ipofanes
Kuildeous
Then I'd propose that the first teammate be spymaster and cycle through those. Any concerns?
-
Sounds good to me.
-
Sounds good to me.
I'd be in too.
-
yep.
-
Just need to see if rspeer is on board too. Then gkrieg or egork can generate the list.
-
Yep, I'm in
-
I'll be VLA until Monday though
-
Ipofanes, would you be willing to update the opening post with the new teams? Just so there's a convenient spot to remind us all of what we have.
-
I'll be VLA until Monday though
I can still create the board and PM it to you. I'll still randomize who goes first.
Do we want to play this one without spoiler tags and see how it goes? Just try not to game it?
-
That sounds fine to me. I definitely felt kind of weirdly left out as the spymaster. And the game works IRL where there are no spoiler tags.
-
It was kind of weird with the spoiler tags. It was kind of exciting to go back and read everything that was discussed. It was like opening a present or something.
But yeah, as spymaster, your role is to just skim the black lines and look for guesses.
We just have to be careful as players not to play the game for the spymasters.
-
We ready to do this?
And it sounds like people would rather not have spoiler tags? I don't care either way. I suppose if at least one person feels the game is enhanced by spoiler tags, then we'll use them. If no one speaks up, then just post as normal.
-
I am ready
-
Can you make the board then? If not I can make it tomorrow.
-
I'll try later today

Xyloto: 4
-
Huh, interesting. Sadly I'm not familiar with Coldplay enough to recognize this clue. For all I know, this might not even refer to Coldplay's opera. But I did a wiki search for it anyway.
Throwing out my first thoughts in spoilers—not to prevent the spymasters from seeing but to not sway Ipo's thought process.
TRACK, HEART, maybe CAST and/or PRINCESS? How dominant are horns on this album? I'll have to see if I can listen more to it this afternoon
-
Back I am! I have fallen sick for a couple of days.
As I understand it we'll not use spoilers this time.
Old fart like me is mostly unaware of today's pop culture. I am learning from Wikipedia that one song title featured as a single reads PRINCESS of CHINA, so there's that. There's TRACKS on an album, this would be my next choice. There is one track that reads "Don't let it break your HEART", which may be my fourth guess. Nothing on the board close enough to DEK's assembly language named "MMIX", which surprisingly is also a track title.
Ok, now reading Kuildeous' musings ... Yeah, CAST went through my head too but CHINA is more specific in my opinion.
-
... gkrieg attempt at Russian ...
I am not getting it, but presume you are not hinting at ROULETTE, that would be illegal.
-

I actually put Russian in my PM to him and said that we went first. Which I still think I was on the blue team last time.

I concur with your choice of four. I wasn't that enamored with the CAST idea anyway.
So… China

siniy is more of a dark blue. Goluboy is more of a baby blue. So probably siniy

Correct
-
Continuing on with Ipo's thought, going with TRACK.
-
Aside: If you end up listening to Mylo Xyloto, I recommend skipping Hurts Like Heaven. The album is pretty good overall, but that one track is so dynamically compressed that it insults my ears.
-
Track is blue
-
Go for it: HEART
-
Heart is neutral
Red to go
-
Well, at least the clue was specific enough that HEART didn't hurt us too badly. I'll have to review the song list. I listened to a few songs on Spotify; I didn't get a strong horn vibe.

But LEAD is strong. Let's do that one first.
LEAD

I like WINTER. Even though seasons don't work that way, it's too suggestive to not clue.
I think that's a good third guess. LITTER is the only other one I'm thinking at this point.
-
Lead is red
-
I'm having my doubts about WINTER all of a sudden. Are we only deciding to guess it because it's cold in the Himalayas, where "Himalayas" was a word on the board?
Even so, LITTER sounds even less appropriate to what Sherpas do.
-
bump
possibly the stall is partly due to http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=3621.msg549867#msg549867 but at the moment it's not the spymaster's move.

First things that pop in my mind are BOARD and ROULETTE.
If either or both of those are your first thoughts too, then go for it. I'll need to examine more on the Coldplay clue.
-
I agree that CAST is pretty weak. I'm seeing CHARGE as a possible synonym for Sparkers, which was a theme, but I'm not sold on that either. The only connections to track names I see are Princess, China, and Heart. The other words just aren’t gelling with me.
So I would go for those two and unless one of us receives an afflatus, pass. Perhaps the paring down of words will help us later.
-
Yes, I think we can afford a bit of sandbagging.
ROULETTE

Roulette is blue

BOARD

could it be that WINTER was the extra assoc to "Coldplay"?

I'm seeing CHARGE as a possible synonym for Sparkers, which was a theme, but I'm not sold on that either.
CHARGE has wonderfully many connotations, such as electricity, responsibility, billing, ambush, that I as a spymaster would not waste it on that weak an association.
The following is in spoilers as to not affect egork's moves too much:
If he gives us a 2 next time (and red has not more than 3 left) I'm in favour of a Hail Mary for CAST to clear the last one.
-
could it be that WINTER was the extra assoc to "Coldplay"?
Hmm, that is possible. And I think it's a stronger possibility than CAST.
So in regards to your spoiler tag, I don't think I would unless things look dire for us.

We're screwed. Better get a clue that covers all the rest of our words.

Hey, a little off topic, but I learned the game yesterday, and read through this game afterwards, really fun to follow your discussions. I think this came might work even better online than live, because there is no (inadvertent) cheating. I'm interested in playing too!

I would be up for 4-player game as well. You should probably up thread in main forum games forum to get more people to join

Cool beans. There is a Codenames thread in the main game thread. It looks like the other Codenames games have petered out, so I'm sure that you can find some takers, possibly even from V too.
V is the only game with multiple guessers on each team while I through IV I believe were all 2-on-2. Just propose if you want 2-on-2 or something larger, and they will come.
-
MILITARY: 4
-
CASTLE and CHARGE are great ones.
Other ones we could try:
HAWK because one can be a war hawk.
HORN because the bugle is associated with the military.
EAGLE because so many U.S. military things are named after eagles. I'm less confident about this one because it's US-specific, and also because we probably aren't so lucky as to get both HAWK and EAGLE as our color.
-
Charge for sure. Point is possible, with West Point and other uses. I think Hawk is another good one.
Yeah, charge - castle - hawk are the top 3.
-
CASTLE
-
I can see the argument for POINT. I might want to guess it before HAWK even, as the clue is "military" and not "war".
-

castle is blue

Welp.

Help us, Obi-Wan Assassin, you're our only hope.

Now that's a Hail Mary if I ever saw one.
I hope it fails. But if it succeeds, I'm e-mailing gkrieg a beer.
-
beer
-
BEER is RED
-
So, we got one!
Seriously, though...
Bat could work, given a breeze from its wings. Same with hawk and eagle. Horn requires a blow of air. And yelling charge?
-
Pretty sure "bottle" should be next, right?
-
Apparently draught can mean pulling something along, especially a beast of burden, vehicle or tractor (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/draught). Pulling a litter (in the person-carrier sense) seems to fit well enough here.
-
Wait, I see the problem with BOTTLE -- that it's the thing that's specifically not draught (draft) when it comes to beer. Hmm.
Meanwhile, Wiktionary's 17th sense of "draught" is "The bevel given to the pattern for a casting", so that points to CAST. And you can draw water from a WELL.
My queue at this point would be WELL, LITTER, CAST, and then maybe CHARGE and deliberate about BOTTLE some more.
-
The more you learn ... I was unaware of the meaning of litter as a stretcher. Looking up litter in the dictionary I see German translations which I didn't know exist as a word, such as Förnahorizont.
-
... beer.
Hey. Who's your team-mates??

Let's go with litter next. I think it still matches sherpas, too.

I hope y'all had a good Christmas (you may be jealous - I'll have mine in 9 days). Let's play

I'm fairly certain about my selection, but it'd be a dick move to finalize it without Ipo's input.
-
Sorry everyone, have been hibernating.
CAST
To my mind EgorK's clue was just about what I'd call legal, as the wording of the solution was selected to contain letters of the words in the clue.
But I generally can get along with different styles of playing.

Yep. Good game guys. I had a horrible game this time! :'(
-
Can you give us the answer that went with your clues? We were way off.

Once I get to my computer and can remember. On the draught clue you got the ones you needed to get, I left such a huge number so you could guess from the previous clues

I noticed that only some time after posting clue. When 3 remaining words were cast, castle and degree my plan was to hint Perlmutter: 3. What do you think about that?
-
sherpa was LEAD, HIMALAYAS, and POINT.
Military was going to be US military, but I didn't ask Egor and wanted to get a clue out there. It was CHARGE, EAGLE, HORN, and POINT.
Draught was BEER and WELL, and enough guesses for you to win the game
I didn't know LITTER could be used as a stretcher either!
-
I noticed that only some time after posting clue. When 3 remaining words were cast, castle and degree my plan was to hint Perlmutter: 3. What do you think about that?
I would not have gotten those clues. Even checking Wikipedia would not have helped me. This game shows there is such a thing as getting too abstruse.
I played on New Year's Eve and got CHICK correct. That was lucky, because I wasn't sure how perverted he was trying to be with SLOT. Turns out he was talking about PORT. Oops.
Huh, I'm surprised that LITTER was not universally recognized as a stretcher. American thing maybe?

Oh great, that probably makes it an age thing. I hate age things. You youngsters keep reminding me of it.
-
Draught was BEER and WELL, and enough guesses for you to win the game
In this case, according to the rules you may say "draught infinity" to indicate you are not actually thinking of six associations but rather want to say "off you go".
-
I noticed that only some time after posting clue. When 3 remaining words were cast, castle and degree my plan was to hint Perlmutter: 3. What do you think about that?
I would have failed all three of them. I googled and saw that the word is not used in English as mother of pearl, but that there is an author of that name who is on the low-carb bandwagon. So I'd have gone for BREAD and BEER as high-carb supplies and maybe DEGREE because, well, that guy is a medical doctor. With "Hogwarts 3", I might have guessed at least two of the three words.
-
Let's play another? Who's turn is it as spymasters?
-
Since we've gone three rounds (with a substitution), we could shake up the teams a bit. I ran our names through a randomizer and came up with these teams:
Red:
gkrieg13
rspeer
ashersky
Blue:
egork
ipofanes
Kuildeous
Then I'd propose that the first teammate be spymaster and cycle through those. Any concerns?
Following this suggestion, rspeer and me are the next spymasters. I'll randomize something.
-
Here we go.

Ipofanes, could you add a section to the original post with this information along with the current matrix so it'll be easier to find?

I'm fine with passing.

Degree is temperature related, though. We can save it for an extra guess.

Hmm, ambitious clue. Let's see… Using spoilers only so that Egor can make his own conclusions without bias.
Definitely RABBIT and CYCLE, I think. Mother EARTH is often used as a reference to fertility. I'm shaky on the fourth one. According to astrology sites, JUPITER in the 5th house is good for fertility while SATURN is the opposite. I'm not sure how well Ipo knows astrology, so this may be a stretch.
My thoughts are RABBIT and CYCLE. EARTH if you concur. Could pass on the fourth one unless you have a thought on that.

Missed cycle, otherwise agree with your analysis. I'd investigate Roman gods (or planets) deeper tommorow

Well, likely compound. Probably force. There are also pipe bombs that are using gunpowder, but this stretching...
-
I agree with COMPOUND. My mind also went to PIPE bombs and FORCE, but I'm not leaning heavily toward them.
I do wonder if Ipofanes is referring to the Gunpowder Plot in LONDON. It seems kind of convoluted, but he picked Gunpowder for a reason.
-
Spy team blue, anyone? The suspense is killing me.
-
I think we're in agreement over COMPOUND.
What do you think about LONDON, Egork? Too much of a stretch?
-
I think it too dangerous. I'll prefer pipe for second guess

Hello?

The suspense literally killed our spymaster.

Sorry, I did not see the bolded word.

I think pipe and London, in this order

All right. I'm game. PIPE.

PIPE is the assassin

So we win? That's the first assassin we've seen.

With "fertility" I had in mind: EARTH, SATURN, WORM, and RABBIT. I picked "fertility" over "fertile" because of SATURN, but should have picked "fertile" probably for the worm, as in "The Formation of Vegetable Mould through the Action of Worms, with Observations on their Habits". As Egork, I completely overlooked CYCLE.
"Gunpowder" was clue to FORCE, COMPOUND and LONDON. I hoped to cover TRUNK and WORM with "pliable". I saw the looming threat of the PIPE bomb, especially after Alan Rickman's passing away (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RT0zB47mPfc), but did not see any better way to clear the board in three turns (team Red would definitely have won within four).
-
That was a fun game! The more games I play of this, the worse I seem to get at it! Means it is a complex game
-
Yes, I think we are done. Good game, although I killed the last round being on the reckless side.
I'd be ready for another one, will post it in the main thread.
-
I think we still have one pair of spymasters in the current round
-
Yes, if everyone is still up for finishing up the round, we can conclude the game with the last two spymasters.
-
Fine with me, I thought we had three rounds finished.
It'd be up to the spymasters to set the grid up.
-
I'm the next spymaster, but no access to the spreadsheet on mobile.

I do, so here it is. Key has been sent to ashersky.

Gasket: 2

I had to look that word up.
These things seem to be made of IRON, they prevent DROPs to leave WASHERs.
WASHER and IRON is unlikely as LAUNDRY would be put in a washer and then ironed.
So I'd go for WASHER, followed by DROP.
What do you think?

Hey, I'm sorry.
I clearly haven't been keeping up with this thread and I probably shouldn't be in the next game.

Seems reasonable. After all, blue spymaster can hear what his teammates are talking about, so you being on your own team does put red spymaster at a slight disadvantage. I suppose if you talk as if you have a teammate, that would even things out.
-
Are we allowed to talk or guess? I am not getting what ashersky and gkrieg are up to.
-
Sorry you guys guess and play normally. When your turn is over, I want to tell ash what I'm thinking before he gives a clue so I've asked him to wait
-
ok. I am all for PASTE then.
or rather, not quite ok. I'm all for table talk to coordinate the guesses between players. Talk especially directed at the spymaster to guide his clues is something I'd frown upon at the table.
What do the others think?
-
I interpreted his request as permission to muse out loud about what he thinks about the previous clues, which of course you guys are able to do since it facilitates communication. Since he's playing by himself, it would seem pretty odd if he posts his thought process. Meanwhile, Ipo and Egor are required to post their thoughts so they can reach a consensus.
This give me, the blue spymaster, an advantage because I can tailor my clue off of what you guys are talking about. While you aren't specifically trying to guide me with phrases like, "If he wants us to guess X, he should say Y," I may gain a little insight into why you feel strongly for or against a specific word. But the red spymaster is operating pretty much in a vacuum right now.
So as long as gkrieg doesn't say something along the lines of, "If you want me to guess X, Y, and Z, then say W," then I would be okay with him voicing his thoughts so that ashersky has the same advantage as me.

I plan to just use the clues he has given me and tell me what I'm thinking. The other thing I was going to say was to give me a number to be able to make enough guesses to win the game.

If gkrieg and ash manage to win in one clue from here - well, they deserve it then
-
Ok ash here it is.
So the clues you have given me are: Book:2, and I got both of those.
shades: 3. I only got roof from that
weight: 4. I only got scale and gold from that
So from those clues you have already given me, I'm going to assume one of the clues was duplicate, so I still have all the clues to our words.
From shades, I would guess the other two words are maybe VACATION and MAMMOTH?
From weight, I would say the other two are MAMMOTH and ?
POISON, CZECH, KIWI, GRASS, and STREAM I don't get from either of those clues, which decreases the guessing space to KING, VACATION, DWARF, MAMMOTH. From those I would guess KING as the other weight one?
So two things for you. I'm probably going to guess VACATION, MAMMOTH, and KING unless you change my mind, and make sure you give me a number that allows me enough guesses :)

S'okay.

Well, I guess Czech
-
CZECH
not a very specific clue (Bohemia would be closest to a synonym) but everything else does not fit.
-
Czech is Blue
I suppose Bohemia would have worked too, but I was going for word association. Perhaps my being an American hindered me there.
Good game. I panicked when Egork suggested SEED, because I thought I overlooked that word and gave too vague of a clue. I did that IRL with FLAME and HEART. I said Kali-Ma, which got them thinking about Indiana Jones, so I was eagerly waiting for them to get those words. Then they said that the scene was in TEMPLE of Doom, and I realized with a heavy heart that TEMPLE was on the board--and it was the opposing team. Oops.

Here are my words:
You got the two for Book.
For Shades, it was Roof, Vacation (where you wear shades, as in sunglasses), and Ray (as in Ray Charles, famous for wearing sunglasses).
For Weight, it was only Scale and Gold, giving you 2 extra guesses for the ones you missed on Shades.
And then I used Death to bring in Poison, as well as connect back to Ray (as in Death Ray).
-
Those were good clues. I didn't read all the words out loud so I couldn't get the death ray association.

Yeah, my style has been less wikipedia and more obvious connections. It makes it harder to be specific, I guess.
You had vacation in mind, but went another direction. I didn't know how to get rid of Mammoth -- it was big and died.

I would be misled as a spy by that number. Of course you could always add the number of yet uncharted words to the number of associations with the clue, but that would have to be known as your personal style to be useful. (Also, I am not 100% sure if it is legal.) Seeing the high number with weight, I was sure that Mammoth would be one of the solutions.

I recall someone else adding extra guesses to try to get previous ones missed, so I thought I'd do it as well. All to say it wasn't an original idea.

I happened across this BGG post and was reminded of this situation:

I knew that unlimited is a viable option, but I didn't realize that it implicitly means that there's really only one clue but have some extra guessing room.
And yeah, if someone told me Australia: Four, I would be obsessing over what those four words are.

Ya for weight I assumed there were 4 answers that fit the bill.
