Title: Feast and Bishop Interaction
Post by: TheHutts on January 08, 2012, 06:54:33 pm
Hi - first time poster, I just play at home with my wife. I've been reading the forum, and googling for the answer to this, but with no answer, so I wanted to ask. If my wife plays Bishop, and I have a Feast, if I trash the Feast through their Bishop, do I get the benefit from the Feast (gaining a card worth 5)?

I'm assuming there's something in the general rules against it, eg. only benefiting from an action on your turn, but I wanted to double check. Thanks for your help!

You get nothing.

You only get the card's bonus when the action is played (which has to be on your turn). The fact that the feast is trashed is just another condition of playing the action.

Right. The text on the card is a list of instructions that you follow when you play the card.  The instructions are:

1. Trash this card
2. Gain a card costing up to $5

Nowhere does the card say "when you trash this, gain a card costing up to $5".  No FAQ is necessary to make this explicit.

Though that could make an interesting Reaction card. You could trash it directly but also gain a benefit if you trash it on someone else's turn.

Could even be a Treasure-Reaction, so it acts as a counter to Saboteur, Pirate Ship, and Thief.

And swindler and bishop and governor.

It could be interesting but the problem is that the reaction ability would be useless in a large percentage of games. I think to make it viable, the card itself would have to be able to trash in some extent either itself or other copies of itself.

Card ($3) Reaction-Victory-Treasure
+1$
+Worth 1VP
Trash a card from your hand.
------------
If this card is trashed, you may reveal this. If you do, gain a Victory or a Treasure Card
costing up to 3 more than this.

This would be somehow useful in the games with no trashing. It could also be "..trashed or set aside," so it would work with few more cards.

Play a Workshop, gain a Card, reveal a Watchtower, trash Card, reveal Card, gain a Card, reveal Watchtower, trash Card...then trash the last Card for a free Gold on top, or a Duchy if you're trying to 3-pile.

I'm always worried that going off on tangents like this in a thread about a simple rules question is just going to confuse the OP...

How about this, now it can't gain itself:

Card ($4) Reaction-Victory-Treasure
+1$
+Worth 1VP
Trash a card from your hand.
------------
If this card is trashed, you may reveal this. If you do, gain a Victory or a Treasure Card costing exactly $1 or $2 more than this.

The on-play ability is probably too powerful though. In itself it's comparable to Loan. It's weakened somewhat by the fact that it's not optional, which is good. Maybe remove the VP and the option to gain a Victory card?
