Title: Custom Cards
Post by: NateDominion on July 30, 2015, 04:45:59 pm
will writing on the backs of coppers and using them as blanks affect the game? If not, why doesn't everyone do that? Do you?

EDIT: Last night I made some coppers princes, plunders and counting houses
I decided to not made custom cards and just take cards from other expansions

I don't think I understand the question.

I think it's good to have all the Coppers be Coppers. Sometimes that matters. And by the "backs", do you mean the "fronts"? Why would you want to write on the back of a card (unless it was something like Stash)?

Assuming you mean 'the fronts', like LastFootnote said; still no.

- Copper runs out in a few cases, especially in multiplayer Mountebank games. So it would affect the game.
- There are actual blank cards in every box as far as I know.
- It's just blasphemy.

I suppose you could do that with the extra Coppers from Intrigue if you want.

Gave my blanks away to a friend cause he was making custom cards.

The two ways I've used to do custom cards (fan-made or official cards that I haven't bought yet) are:
1) Write on a piece of paper This physical card = this other card for this game.  For the proxy cards, it's best to use blanks or some other card that wouldn't be in use this game (maybe another kingdom card that you don't often use or ruins in a game with no looters), but I have used marked coppers for this also. Despite marking the cards, doing it this way can get confusing.
2) sleeve them and put in printed-out fan made cards over the original cards.

#2 is better and is what most people do.  I would only recommend #1 if you really can't wait until you get sleeves to use custom cards. But if you like the game and want it to last, you should get sleeves.

What I do is just use a proxy, preferably one that's similar to my fan card (both flavor-wise and function-wise) so it's easier to remember.  If I ever develop my cards to the point where I want them in full physical form (or decide to print out someone else's), I'll probably print them on paper and sleeve them with the extra basic cards behind them (thus far, I've only made physical copies of fan events, primarily because it doesn't matter if they're distinguishable from the official ones since you don't need to mix them into your deck).

By the way, does this belong in the Variants & Fan Cards subforum?

Yes, I regularly write on the backs of Coppers:

Get out of my deck!
Get out of my deck!
Get out of my deck!
Get out of my deck!
Get out of my deck!
Get out of my deck!
Get out of my deck!
Get out of my deck!
Get out of my deck!

I'm still hoping that one day they will listen.

But there's only one blank card per Dominion box...

(though one could use cards such as Woodcutter and Chancellor as fan cards, just remember "hey it's not a Woodcutter it's a fanmade village" ; "also it doesn't cost $3 but $6" for Remodel purposes)

You can make custom cards from your Scouts and Harvests too, but only if you ban Swindler.

Swindler doesn't matter, since you won't gain an actual Scout/Harvest but a fan card...

and that's how trashing was thought of.

I can't think of the last time I ran out of copper in an in-person game. The only time I find it conceivable is a 6 person game with montebank (because 6 person Goons engines, Gardens decks, etc. aren't viable). And then Intrigue provides more than enough.

I'd say the fun of making new cards > very small risk of it affecting the game.

Beggar can and will run out the Copper pile, so you would at least need to make sure you have the whole pile when playing with it. (Especially if paired with Gardens)
