Title: Better the more of it you trash
Post by: sudgy on June 13, 2015, 09:23:53 pm
I just thought of this idea from the random cards thread:

You may trash this.  [Some bonus] per <this card> in the trash.

This could work pretty interestingly.  Do you trash more of them to make it even better?  But your opponent could just buy a couple after you've powered them up.

It kind of reminds me of Forager, but a bit different.

I did something distantly related with a card that put itself on your Tavern Mat and counted copies there. Not sure whether using a common pool like the trash doesn't create a prisoner's dilemma. Maybe if it's a great tfb target, but on most boards spending buys and time to build something your opponents can get just as easily is a waste. Forager you can simply just use to clear out junk, so the problem is not inherent in the card itself but in how you use it. Well, i guess you can also gain the majority of these, but it still seems more problematic than Forager if it offers nothing else.

I had toyed with a similar idea.

Phantom Workshop - Action - 1

Choose one: Gain a card from the supply costing up to the amount of Phantom Workshops in the trash; trash a card from your hand costing up to the amount of Phantom Workshops you have in play; +1 Buy.
--
When this card is trashed, each other player gains a curse.
--

Its cheap cost was for self-synergy, but that's probably too cheap.  The 'choose one' was to prevent it from being too strong, though - again - that might not be best.  Its on-trash effect was partly for flavor because phantoms and curses kind of go together, but also it's so that the trasher benefits from the trashing.  Maybe it needs +Action idk.

Miser and Pirate Ship are takes on this. While there's obviously a difference in that to power them up you don't need to remove them from your deck, they still give you the decision on each play between "get some benefit now" and "make all future plays of this card more powerful".
