Title: Flavor Synergy
Post by: werothegreat on June 02, 2015, 07:34:30 pm
So certain cards go well together, not because they actually make a good strategy together, but because of their names.  For examples, we have Wine Merchant/Vineyard, Teacher/University, and of course Ratcatcher/Rats.  Can anyone think of any others?

Pirate Ship & Treasure Map

Others:
Smugglers & Contraband
Caravan & Caravan Guard (too obvious but not yet mentioned)
Swindler & Fool's Gold/Counterfeit
Libarary & Adventurer (& Storyteller)

Someone mentioned in another thread that Inheritance/Estate are (deliberately?) thematic names because an estate is something you inherit.
Although that is really an entirely different definition of the word estate.

Here's something more specific: Princess, Baker, Tribute, Tournament, Warrior, Death Cart

Here's a whole series:

Fortress, Great Hall, Haunted Woods...
Urchin, Adventurer, Hero...
1) Bridge Troll, Philosopher's Stone, Teacher, Madman
2) Swindler, Secret Chamber, Witch, Possession
3) Dungeon, Marauder, Treasure Map, Rats
4) Tournament, Champion, Graverobber, Minion, Remake
5) Council Room, Conspirator, Fortune Teller, Embassy, Raid

This is actually why I suggested the name "Trade" for the card  ;D

I've always enjoyed the interaction between Butcher and Peddler.

Yeah, this is title only.  Noble Brigand doesn't fit.  Princess is questionable too, but I thought it was worthwhile.

Hero is widely accepted as a gender-neutral term. This is part of a larger trend of gender-specific language falling out of fashion as it comes to be seen as sexist.
A similar example is that many people now use "actor" to refer to both male and female, doing away with the word "actress" altogether.
The word "authoress" is virtually unheard of these days.

Or, if you prefer, it's not actually her title but her name. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hero_%28given_name%29)

Page H. Champion had always been embarrassed about the typo on her birth certificate.  Teachers, employers and even friends and family regularly forgot that her legal name did not include the letter i.  One day, she decided to rectify the mistake.  But why stop there? she thought to herself.  She had never really felt like a "Paige" either.

She considered a few different names before settling on "Treasure".  The name gave her new confidence; she even started spelling out her middle name in full, just so others would say the extra syllable: Treasure Hunter Champion.

But as she grew older, Treasure grew tired of this name as well.  She did not fret though -- she had already changed her name once.  Why not again?  Over the years, she tried out a few other names.  For some time she was "Warrior".  After that, she became "Hero".  Finally, she decided to drop her given names entirely and just go by her surname.  Yes, this feels right, she thought to herself.  I am a Champion.
