The Adventures Previews are coming! March 30th, a week before the release. What are you most excited to see?
-
I am most looking forward to hilarious incorrect predictions about card strength. Also the funny blurbs.
-
The end of playtesters being smartypants. :P
-
Without trying to be a smartypants, I am most looking forward to Donald's comments and seeing the official art.
-
Seeing if openings can get warped even more than Baker and Stonemason and Doctor allow.
I want that legit solitaire Turn 3 empty Supply.
-
Not much love for Reserve cards so far, which I guess makes sense since it's not yet clear exactly what they are. Fun fact: my favorite Dominion card is a Reserve card.
-
I'm excited about the Adventures previews, but I don't think there's anything in particular. Like, I believe almost anything we're going to get is going to be good enough, and new Dominion cards are inherently interesting. Therefore, I didn't vote.
-

Which one? ;)
-
See, I would answer this question, but I don't know what's in the previews... Mostly what TheOthin said.
-
The thing is, if all the good players have already seen the cards.... Strength is probably already known roughly already.
Ergo the sets already solved so no interesting 'what if' tactic threads
Ergo not much excitement at all
Ergo Flipside gets a little more upset!
-
Also, for a scary second I thought the first option was Moat Durations!
I nearly started writing some very rude words! As if Moat itself wasn't bad enough

And seriously, posts showing off that you have been privilages to see new cards whenost of the population haven't..... Not that cool.

Shh, it'll all be over in less than a month, don't you worry.
-
I'd like to publicly apologize for hurting Flipside and Ozle's feelings. I will make it up to them by revealing all of the card texts as soon as I get over my crippling depression caused by unintentionally harming my idol. It should be over with within 2 months' time.
-

Man, I saw that, too. I was thinking, "Lighthouse is already a Moat Duration!"

Man, I hear you. I've been trying to tone that down lately. I am legitimately excited for the previews, though.
The thing is, if all the good players have already seen the cards.... Strength is probably already known roughly already.
I don't think all the good players have. Also, the number of playtest games will be rapidly dwarfed by the number of real-life games as soon as the set is online, and I'm guessing opinions will change. Also, there are 50 new things in this set (30 Kingdom cards and 20 Events). Fifty! I think we'll be talking about Adventures for a long time to come.
-
The thing is, if all the good players have already seen the cards.... Strength is probably already known roughly already.
I think this is pretty huge. They've already adjusted to the new cards and figured out the good/bad/incorrect -- this could have a very real impact on the League/Leaderboard/etc., no?
I can't come up with a good analogy in another sport, but...it's like FIFA has decided to move the location and size of the goal and the ball for World Cup matches and only Brazil and Spain got to playtest the new setup, but months in advance, so when it is introduced at the World Cup, they'll have a distinct advantage over their opponents, as they've been able to adjust.
So the competitive Dominion scene will be unfairly skewed towards playtesters for however long the adjustment period is, no?
(Sorry if this has already been discussed/debunked/dismissed.)

Formula 1 is probably an easier example for you there....
The 'all the good players' may have been a massive overstatement by me, I literally have no idea how many of them have.
JSH, it's virtually impossible to hurt my feelings.....

Really? You aren't excited to see which cards will be previewed or to read the blurbs? I'm still pretty stoked.

Not nearly compared to the anticipation I had about learning what the new cards would be before I knew.

Real question -- are playtesters privy to the cards in their final forms? Or, due to being playtesters, is it possible that the cards they played with have changed a great deal since they played with them? I mean, you're not still testing the final versions on isotropic... are you?!
-
Pretty sure they are.
-
Unless DXV is pulling a hugely elaborate troll I think we are playing with the final cards.

So what happens if you find something which should be changed? Is it too late?

Is that if I know the final cards or if it's all some joke? I mean, considering it comes out April 8th I can't see any changes being made.

It is now.

It's totally true but mostly irrelevant. If you play a bunch right when the set comes out, you'll be most of the way there. The playtesters know what some serious players thought of the cards, but soon you will too.
I think it does matter for the league's A division, where Mic especially will have an edge. Outside of the league, Mic was beating you anyway, so the advantage is not so meaningful. Stef also playtested but not as much as Mic, and again was beating you anyway. If there's a tournament then jsh357 will have an edge too; he hasn't been in the league. I am not trying to put down the other playtesters; jsh357 just played a ton and might participate in a tournament.
I would personally try to schedule competitive stuff for right when the set shows up online, which, who knows when that is. But you know, it's fun to specifically be trying to figure out the cards competitively. I don't know if people would prefer banning the playtesters (presumably all of them, not counting the people who just got to play the set for one day at one of those two things) or allowing them; I would lean towards allowing them given the size of the community (small).
-
Really? You aren't excited to see which cards will be previewed or to read the blurbs? I'm still pretty stoked.
Man. Do I have to find old jokes to put in these? I did not write hilarious previews. I got in, I previewed, I got out.
-

I think one or two cards had tiny non-functional wording changes that never made it into my prototype, but I mentioned those changes to the playtesters. At least one was the way LastFootnote had it in his mock-ups already, I just hadn't caught it for my prototype.
Now people who saw the cards in Chicago, they will be in for plenty of surprises.
The cards are way locked in. They have to go out to translators (and have). It would be a real hassle to try to get something changed now, if it was even possible. Playtesting mostly ended in October.
-
I think that having the beginning of a League season coincide with the release of the new set online would be pretty amazing.
-
To people concerned about being left in the dust by playtesters, I won most of my games at the January meetup, and I wouldn't really consider myself a top tier player.
-
To people concerned about being left in the dust by playtesters, I won most of my games at the January meetup, and I wouldn't really consider myself a top tier player.
I'm not sure that's relevant. At the January meetup, weren't you all playing with new cards for the first time?
A relevant example would be if you play WanderingWinder on Day 1 of launch and defeat him 70 times in a row because you already have months of practice with the cards and he has to read them each time.
-
The game is too complicated for us testers to have that huge of an advantage. Besides, I spent most of my testing time goofing around with ambitious ideas, so I learned nothing. I don't even remember the cards. I think one of them was a zeppelin.

I think you're worrying over nothing, man. Yes, the playtesters may have a short-lived advantage. I doubt it will last long.
-
The top players have played enough games that I think their intuition will be very good after a very short while, because they know the game so well. You won't beat WW 70 times in a row; more like 7 at the very most while he tries out each of the cards a couple times. Besides, each game will have less than two cards from the new expansion on average.
-
Dominion skill is going to trump knowledge of the cards. Jonts proved that when we played; he had never touched Guilds before, and we were playing with all Guilds, but that didn't help me at all.

Hey, I'm just a spectator, man. I'm just worried about humidor-style complaints when the world #1 changes over an Adventures card.
-

That balloon ain't gunna fly.
-
Even if playtesters receive some short-term advantage, it's going to be mitigated in no time.
As soon as the new expansion is online people gonna play their assess off, and share their experience on the forum and through streams, so the knowledge about new cards power level gonna be "common" in just a week or couple. That knowledge is not going to be final indeed, but its further development gonna flow with the whole community, not only within the small group of playtesters.
-
I'm out of the loop, what are all these things in the pool?
Reserve Cards?
Events?
Other two?

Most of ours, anyway.

You might beat me 7 times in a row now, with existing cards. It's been known to happen.
-
Obviously the most important question here..... How is this going to affect Mafia.?
-
Do we know what the plans and timeframe are for getting it online? I played a couple games in Chicago but otherwise I'm completely out of the loop.
-
I'm looking forward to what new types of beards we will see.
-

Pretty sure Ozle is offering to mod Dominion: Adventures Mafia!

Actually, quite a few of the card names would go well as Mafia titles.

You don't need jokes, necessarily. I enjoyed the Hinterlands, Dark Ages, and Guilds previews. Just do whatever you usually do. The previews are interesting in the same way the secret histories are interesting.
I'm looking forward to what new types of beards we will see.
On my mockups, I count over 20 beards. I'm guessing the actual set will have fewer, but who knows.
Hey, I'm just a spectator, man. I'm just worried about humidor-style complaints when the world #1 changes over an Adventures card.
Well, think of it this way. Would you prefer that some of the set's playtesters have a short-lived advantage online, or that the new cards are all so similar to existing ones that there is no such advantage?
-
Is there any evidence for the expansion being online any time close to the physical release?
I don't think the new version will be done by then, and I doubt they'll implement it into the old one.
-
What I'm looking forward to most is people's reactions when they see how right/wrong their guesses have been. And there have been some quite accurate guesses on here.
-

That's true, Adventures online will postdate the new version by at least a few weeks, which in turn will postdate Adventures irl by at least a few weeks. So people who play irl have some time period to get in games and discuss cards and so playtester advantage seems like it can be safely ignored.
-
I'm surprised no one mentioned the "new card smell" for this. Does everyone play primarily online now?

Love new board game smell!

This expansion is printed by Hasbro, and I have heard that they do not smell as nice.

Some company in Europe. Most likely in Germany.

I think ASS Altenburger. Who I think will still be printing European copies.

The end of playtesters being smartypants. :P
Man, my mind keeps coming back to this, I'm so bad a reading into +1s on the forums... is there actual resentment here or just snarky envy? Should I be apologizing for something?

I've been thinking about it too, and I don't think there's a need for an actual apology.
It probably just went a little bit too far and started annoying people.
The best apologies for any behavior is to do it differently next time.

Sorry Donald, you have to make another expansion so jsh can behave this time.

I used "smartypants" to convey that no actual ill feelings were had.
I mean sometimes it was a bit annoying, but man if I knew about all these cool new cards I would want to talk about them too, and there really aren't that many channels to do so.
Also, it is well-known that snark gives you loads of respect around these parts.
-
hmmm, i started this in this thread and I don't actually have any envy or annoyance......
But then Donald has already told me in private whats happening next with Dominion so technically I am a step ahead (without knowing this one)
-
Also, it is well-known that snark gives you loads of respect around these parts.
I dunno, man. Maybe it gives you loads of respect but the only way it seems I can get respect around here is by posting articles, or actually working hard to put some kind of video or something together. You people with your one-liners that make message of the week is just something I can't do.
Smartypants. :P

Wait, seriously? You're not actually joking? Hasbro, the toy company without a soul, is printing the American edition of Dominion: Adventures?

Hasbro, who also own Wizards of the Coast, producers of Magic: the Gathering, Dungeons and Dragons, etc. And I have head some very nice thing about the smell from opening a pack of Magic cards, FWIW (I am actually being entirely serious and not joking here, though I'm not entirely sure that the people who said those things were not themselves joking whilst doing so).

Just keep trying! I know it can be demoralizing at first to post beautifully constructed witty oneliners, and see them flop spectacularly. Don't let it stop you! Maybe try some simples jokes for a while, or wildly off-base ones that you don't feel that confortable with, change the board from time to time... Soon you'll see how you get a better grasp of what works and what doesn't. If you persevere, you could be on top of the leaderboard by the end of the year!

Have you considered going towards a more cat gif direction? Or maybe something in the puppy or otter family?
-
I haven't smelled many new Magic cards in a long time so I'm not sure, but new Dominion cards definitely smell like something I've smelled before them, and Magic cards are my best guess. So maybe there won't be much of a change after all?
-
Smells? You people are weird.

Well, which one do you care more for?
Being known as someone who writes articles?
Being known as someone who is funny?
Being someone who is unhappy about the movement of inconsequential little numbers on a post?
Because its fairly hard to be all of them, two of them at once seems achievable though.

They are pretty close, although Dominion cards don't smell quite as good as Magic cards.

But you don't usually have as many new Magic cards in one place as Dominion cards, and I think the Dominion cards retain their smell for longer. (Unless that's just due to me not using mine enough.)
Quantity versus quality! Which might not even be an issue for Adventures, if this means we get both!

Hmm, Well the third one I definitely want. I can't not be that one.
The second one, I dunno. I'd prefer to be known as the video/streaming guy, and I'd like to think I'm sort of funny when I do that, but that's not really the intent.
Is that an OK answer?

1. a question asked solely to produce an effect or to make an assertion and not to elicit a reply, as “What is so rare as a day in June?”.

Historians of Dominion will look back on the levels of salt, irony, and post-irony in these threads and think we were a bunch of cavemen.
See you guys later, I'm going to go thumb through my Adventures proxies for an hour.

Heh, well I am sure you are definitely the first and third.
And it's for you to decide what you want me, follow your dreams, reach for the stars, be all you can be,ask not what your FDsers can do for you, beware the idea of March (ooh topical), all for one and one for all.. Erm... Yes we can!
Sorry, got a little sidetracked there!
But seriously the amount if numbers next to your name isn't really what people respect you for, don't get so hung up on!

1. a question asked solely to produce an effect or to make an assertion and not to elicit a reply, as “What is so rare as a day in June?”.
A day in April. Or a day in September. Or a day in November.
-
Also, another day in June is surely as rare as one day?
Can you prove it?
Yes thanks

I think it is time to start doing puns about a body part. We've done butts, hands and dicks... Any ideas?

Well, think of it this way. Would you prefer that some of the set's playtesters have a short-lived advantage online, or that the new cards are all so similar to existing ones that there is no such advantage?
I prefer that playtesters be slain after completing their tasks to preserve fairness. Did I win?

Well, which one do you care more for?
Being known as someone who writes articles?
Being known as someone who is funny?
Being someone who is unhappy about the movement of inconsequential little numbers on a post?
Because its fairly hard to be all of them, two of them at once seems achievable though.
Hmm, Well the third one I definitely want. I can't not be that one.
The second one, I dunno. I'd prefer to be known as the video/streaming guy, and I'd like to think I'm sort of funny when I do that, but that's not really the intent.
Is that an OK answer?
Heh, well I am sure you are definitely the first and third.
And it's for you to decide what you want me, follow your dreams, reach for the stars, be all you can be,ask not what your FDsers can do for you, beware the idea of March (ooh topical), all for one and one for all.. Erm... Yes we can!
Sorry, got a little sidetracked there!
But seriously the amount if numbers next to your name isn't really what people respect you for, don't get so hung up on!
I've only written one article, so I'm definitely not the first.
And I think the numbers on the leaderboard carry more weight than the number of +1s I have, sure. I'm working on that one.

Gotta love it when autocorrect mangles Shakespeare.

Personally, I'm very excited to know what "florst" means.
-
Tis what happens when the overwhelming strain of lugging around all 3500 cards worth of expansions in your arms becomes too much... they suddenly head florst

I'm most interested in finding out about Events. Iirc, Events was a theme originally considered for Intrigue before deciding that was mainly a way to add variety and Dominion had plenty. So there must be something more to these Events to make them worth doing. Also, I feel like I might be able to imagine how Reserve cards might work (something like when you gain it, set it aside on your Reserves mats, then various triggers to when you play them?) because they're cards, but I have no idea how Events will even work. Something other than cards (and tokens that just count things) that does something? Now that sounds new and intriguing.
I also hope the previews start to "level the playing field" so there isn't so much tension between the playtesters and everybody else. I mean, some of you might have started playing Dominion years before each other and nobody's making a big deal out of that. The advantage of a couple month's head-start will blow over soon enough imo. I don't like scrolling through negative posts.
Oh and I'm also excited for card names. Will I learn more new words like Mountebank and Margrave? Will the Durations still have a sea-theme? Will we ever get a card named Dog & Pony Show??
-
Off topic : I already have the inn avatar, it would be cool if you take another one, otherwise I will change myself :P

I actually thought that the post was written by you for a while.
-
Dang, new guy on the block and I'm already confusing people. I mostly just read instead of posting, so I hadn't noticed this before. Inn's always had my favorite art but perhaps another thing to be excited about here is the possibility that Adventures will have my new favorite card art?

I should have made the same proposition to amalloy.

Yeah, this is getting pretty confusing.

You can find my guesses on cards and mechanics here (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=12391.0).

I will find out what I'm most excited about when I see the cards. so I voted "Whatever else Donald X comes up with"
-
Is there any way to secure the right to reproduce the picture for Inn? I would like to make a quick buck.
-
I have mixed feelings about the new expansion.
Before I heard the announcement of Adventures I thought maybe Dominion will stay the way it is and can become a real classic that is able to compete with chess one day in terms of popularity. And I also think that the current set of Dominion cards offers lots of secrets (for instance about game technics) that still have to be discovered.
However, I am really looking forward to play with the new cards and to experience their relations to old cards.

I think Adventures will, if anything, make Dominion more of a classic. Reserve cards in particular are something that, in retrospect, I'm surprised Donald hadn't thought to do before.

Also, this Inn thing is out of control. Should we settle this on Goko? Losers get Butcher, Baker, and Candlestick Maker for avatars? :P

You're on. I'm in the Gardens...

I think all the losers should get Harem.

Don't let ashersky hear you say that.
-
I've always visualized Ashersky as the guy on the left of the Shanty Town picture. Same for Archetype and Count. I wonder if other people have a different head canon for avatars with more than one person.

You know what? Just for that, I changed my avatar to another one of those.

I'm saying you're the one with the crown, because of "the Great".

Is it possible to figure out (easily) which cards' art is not already a member's avatar?

Technically opening up every single forum member's profile in multiple tabs is easy. It just takes forever.
-

It might be easier to just list what I know is taken.
IGG, Throne Room, Advisor, Coppersmith, Sir Michael, Sir Martin, Envoy, Alchemist, Adventurer, Beggar, Marauder, Courtyard, Jester, Haggler, Watchtower, Necropolis, Shanty Town, Wandering Minstrel, Curse, Golem, Madman, Hamlet, Farmland, Young Witch, Count, Pawn, Familiar, Spice Merchant, Forge, Nobles, Island (there are two of these, actually), Fairgrounds (AND TWO OF THESE), Spy, Market Square, Thief, Tactician, Scavenger, Upgrade, Survivors, Feodum, Cartographer, Trusty Steed... and then I stopped caring because I was getting into users with fewer than 400 posts.
Oh, and Inn.

Venture!
I love how unimpressed the guy in the Venture's picture looks. It is like he is thinking: "I know that you know that I don't have four hundred posts but frankly-I-don't-give-a-damn". ;)
-
... and then I stopped caring because I was getting into users with fewer than 400 posts.
So it doesn't matter if I keep Inn? :P
Still, I was trying to consider alternatives because, you know, I'd like to build up my forum presence and not cause problems. Seems like University or Doctor might be a safe choice?
-
Well if you can hold out for a couple of weeks you could be the first guy with a Dominion: Adventures avatar ... guaranteed no one else would have it ... plus your newly minted avatar is really going to stand out from all the other tired old avatars ...

Actually, I seem to remember someone taking both of those. But I haven't seen them in a while, so. Maybe we should just have a pinned thread with a chart of who's claimed which card for an avatar? I think I'll go do that.
Also bear in mind a fair few forum members use isotropic art for avatars.

Sounds tedious, and mostly pointless, but it would be useful for me at this moment haha.

I unfortunately discovered the online Dominion community just before the end of the Isotropic era, so I have no nostalgic ties to that art. For me, it's what's this crappy Google images art doing on these cards? I suppose I could also find an original, non-Dominion avatar but man, I'd rather spend that time playing Dominion.

Ugh, fine, Harem it is.

Someone please add "card art" to the poll on this thread. I'd like to change my answer.
And it's not "guaranteed", I could be racing three other Inns...

Dude. There are 30 Kingdom cards and 20 Events being added, in addition to whatever else might be in there. That's 80 cards unaccounted for.
I mean, I know what they are. But you don't. :)

You'll notice if you stick around. brokoli (who first asked you to choose a different avatar) is fairly active. I normally don't use Inn as an avatar. Nor Library.
-
Really, there's nothing wrong with using a duplicate avatar. I thought staying at the Inn would be the new trend (at least temporarily), but only a couple people participated. Of course the Library is where I belong. I'll be back there within a few days.

There's room for more in the Library. Everyone should use the Library.

Even Adventurers need to stop off and take a rest.

They change coins into books.

I will see the first preview tomorrow after I walked my blue dog (its fur is greyish blue).

I will see the preview after I drive from Charlotte to Cleveland. Had to get my first roller coaster trip in ASAP.
Fury 325 was pretty good, for those wondering.

Apparently my answer to this was "more horrible jokes"
