Title: Thought experiment: No treasure
Post by: GendoIkari on December 19, 2011, 10:15:30 am
So treasure cards are almost exactly like action cards, except you play them during the buy phase. They take up a card slot in your hand, but don't take up an action. So, what if all treasure cards were just regular action cards, and "buy phase" was just the phase when you buy a card, nothing else?

Also, let's say that cards that reference treasure cards (Bank, Loan, Mine, Mint, etc) still work the same... perhaps the new treasure actions have a subtype treasure... this subtype doesn't change anything, but it allows other cards to reference them.

Copper: +1 action, +1 $
Silver: +1 action, +2 $
Gold: +1 action, +3 $

So what would be different? Just a few things off the top of my head:

What else would become great? What else would become crap?

Seems like Adventurer would only be better, if you think of it as a Golem that will now always give +2 Actions.  That means you can play multiple Adventurers per turn, currently its biggest weakness relative to Venture.

Peddler would be pathetic.  Menagerie would be trivial to trigger.  Hunting Party would basically be strictly superior to Lab.

No... Adventurer doesn't play the treasures, it only puts them into hand. You'd need to play a village first for Adventurer to be worth anything at all.

I see!  Yeah, then Adventurer is just awful.

So then I suppose it's Golem that becomes very different - no longer good at hunting down Actions, but becomes basically Adventurer that sometimes finds Actions?

Scrying Pool effectively reads "draw your deck".

Nah, you stop on victory cards. But still zanily good.

The Not Combos thread has just reminded me that Quarry would become way better, due to Ironworks/Workshop.

Peddlers would most likely always cost $0.

Library-type cards would also be pretty insane.

Edit: Mine and Mint would be worse, since after you mine/mint something, unless you've played a village you can't play your new treasure.

Vineyard would become even more important than it already is as all the treasures would count toward its total actions for VP at the end. Would potion be an action card as well?

Vineyard would be so completely insane! I'd say Potions would definitely also be actions... all treasures would, not just basics.

Oh, no one mentioned Tribute... it would be way better; especially early on.

Terminal card drawing + big money would be history.
