Title: Why is Goko so bad ?
Post by: Sansa on October 24, 2014, 03:05:07 am
I stopped playing when Isotropic went down and started playing on goko a few weeks back. I remember at the time Goko opening was always delayed because of bugs. And here we are today it's still utter garbage.

- I don't even enter the game, loading is frozen
- I got kick out of games for no reasons
- Automatch is finding an opponent every 3 hours
- I can't pay to buy the sets and the support won't even reply to me
- This one is special, when Im listening to a playlist on youtube, when a new song is coming up, it crashes the game and I can't see cards anymore.

I think that's all, I don't wanna go thru the pain of reading every threads, are these comon issues for everyone, is Goko still under development ? I stopped playing for almost 2 years and I have to admit it felt really good to play again, Dominion is the best game I ever played, but I might just drop it again...

Very frustrated here...

Since you mention automatch, I presume you already have Salvager (the fan-made extension) installed?

I also recently started getting back into online Dominion and, while the experience hasn't been smooth, it's been bearable. One thing I noticed is that a couple of weeks ago the game started having severe graphical glitches when my laptop was running on battery power -- plugging it into the socket made Goko work semi-properly again. (I guess they've made the switch to WebGL or something like that and now require lots of graphic processing power.)

I'm not saying goko is great (no way to blacklist cards = bad site), but I got none of the above problems. which browser are you using? I quickly switched to chrome which I'm now using solely for dominion, it works much better than firefox. also, automatch is not from goko, but from salvager, which is generally considered to be good, so careful :P

If he says that automatch is finding an opponent every three hours maybe he doesn't have the extension and means waiting for people to join him in the lobby. I'm not sure though since he explicitly states automatch.

mhpf okay now goko refuses to load games. maybe it read our discussion and couldn't have it that someone wasn't disliking it enough?

Wouldn't you know it, I also use desktop Chrome solely for Goko Dominion. Makes a big difference, especially with Salvager.

For me Goko is now (pretending to) load the game for several minutes hours now. It hasn't been that bad before...

I know you don't care for them, but the Adventures have been awful recently as well: I have to click the "Play Game" button a dozen times, and then usually get a black screen, so I have to reload the page. And after finally playing a few Adventures, the Adventure map claims I'm still at the old level (or even at a lower level)...

Edit: It's still trying to load the same game, for hours now; and I can't even reload the page without losing the game, it seems.  >:( >:(

Obviously Goko starts having problems anytime someone new tries to play.

Sansa installed in all probability the extension. Check user's post (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=8163.msg411642#msg411642) in the salvager thread  ;)

What's worse than Goko is some ppl playing on Goko, though. Yesterday I played a somewhat tricky engine and tried to figure out how to best get back to a certain card, when my opponent started insulting me badly. I replied that I just had to figure out what I'd have to do next, but he kept going on. Luckily, he just resigned and didn't slow play me.
I wonder how someone being at over 5K and having played more than 700 games can be such an idiot. Sometimes you just have to think, it's not all just slow playing.

Some people want and expect fast games even at the expense of good play. Clocked games might be a good option if online Dominion ever got popular enough so players can be on the same page. Then you can have the 5 min game of speed Dominion you've always wanted.

And let's be honest, some people, even on this forum, play really slowly without actually slow playing....

That's me. I play really slowly because if I don't I will play much worse. I also play chess, where thinking for way longer than even that is normal, which may influence my speed in other games like dominion. Clocked games isn't a bad idea, in theory. But goko is still laggy fairly often, and engines will take a certain amount of time to play no matter what.

I was definitely thinking about chess. I also play fairly slowly. I like the idea of clocked games because those want to play fast then have no excuse for joining an untimed game. I feel bad sometimes playing people who want me to play faster. Lately, I have been just playing faster if they are speed demons. If I join a game marked fast players only, I definitely make sure I play fast. Well, at least not slow.

i just hosted a game... some guy joined... i pressed start... the game loaded... i was in alone... I thought that was too lonely, so I resigned... goko said now I lose 37 ranking

aside from the obvious nonsense and general buginess of this fact, doesn't this also mean if you play a game, someone else joins, and he leaves at the right time, and you then proceed to piledrive provinces, you win points out of nowhere?

e: although my rating doesn't seem to have changed, so maybe it was just an annotation bug.

Goko was bad when it first came out.

Now it's bearable (as bearable as taking a lukewarm shower where the temperature sometimes spikes to boiling point or drops to freezing point).

This is what Salvager's blacklist is for.  By and large the Dominion community is WAY more polite than most online games I've played, so I've developed a hair trigger with the blacklist.  I know I'll still get plenty of competitive games if I blacklist someone the second they insult me even once.  That said, if I'm thinking longer than usual, trying to remember what's left in my deck or something like that, I will sometimes let my opponent know in the chat.

Wow, it's really hard to believe that in the almost 2 years since I posted, the site hasn't gotten fixed.  I guess I'll check back in a couple more years.  Maybe the contract will have expired by then, and another team will get their shot.

Shame, it's such a great game, and plays so much better/faster/easier on a computer.  If someone could just figure out how to write the code properly.  Hmmmm.....

It is way way better than it was two years ago. It still has issues, but it is very playable using salvager. Some who have secret isotropic access have even said they prefer Goko to iso now. I think they're probably right.

Also, welcome back!!!! You left right around when I came.

Presumably the network problems in the game run incredibly deep, but this is still pretty ridiculous. You know, I just realized that having the side log is entirely because of Salvager. The game has been out this long, and the chat window UI is still that bad.

The biggest problem is that it feels like it isn't being worked on. It could be, but it's entirely unclear and there's no communication besides the occasional server maintenance message. Other games can have the same feel, but other games are generally a lot more polished than Goko before they reach that state...

You mean Funsockets/Goko fired all its programmers and the current state of affairs is attributable to a NEW team?

I was being ironic AND simultaneously paying much-deserved respect to DougZ, who obviously had a program that worked.  Two years should be long enough to fix a substandard product, but if there is no incentive to fix it (i.e., people pay for stuff that doesn't work like it should), why bother.  Heck, two years is a whole product cycle.  There should have been a "new" version that looks completely different, and makes everyone relearn everything about its operation - oh wait, that's a different company.

Edit: fixed a typo

FWIW someone posted on the Dominion Online FB page and MF responded 10 hours ago by saying that Dominion 2.0 would address the problems of not having a game load and losing points for that. So, it seems like at some point we will be getting a new online version of Dominion.

Yeah, I know, and I can understand it wasn't what he wanted to do.  He gets bonus points for knowing that.

My point is he was one guy.  Goko is presumably a whole company, with like, I dunno, four guys or something.  And they've had TWO YEARS.  It's laughable, and mind boggling, and so..... Uh-murr-i-can.

We just put a lander on a freakin comet moving at 18 kilometers per second, having properly computed (10 years in advance) multiple orbital acceleration points using different objects in the solar system as slingshots.  Network issues for a game must be REALLY hard.

If it is "network problems" maybe Goko could steal some Blizzard folks.  They seem to be able to accommodate a few people logging in at one time.

From what I understand MF took over about a year or so ago. At first, they tried to reconcile with the initial Goko code but realized it was shit and gave up on that. Right now, they are working on developing an all-new online Dominion implementation. It should have been out already, but hey, you know what, I rather they get it right this time and release it when it is ready rather than give us something that sucks like goko did the first time.

I understand your frustrations. Goko is far from perfect.

Either way, I expect Dominion 2.0 to take a long time to come out. Last I heard, they were going to use an entirely new platform, namely Unity, to build the new version. I can only hope the Making Fun staff have enough experience with Unity to make a quality product.

What's up with the negativity? I for one am very grateful that so far they've been failing at making it much worse, though admittedly it would take a team with the ingenuity of those comet guys to actually succeed at that.

Is there an ETA on when the new product will be released (counting expected delays)?

I need to know in how many months/years I need to check this forum again...

Though to be fair it might be rough if I ever DID start playing again... hard to get back to my old skill when I've never played with a huge % of the cards.

Also hi everyone who remembers me, especially the few who might be on here who I've known in real life!

Thanks! <3 Though the "few" in my post was referring to those on here who I have personally met, which is indeed a smaller subset  :P

To keep this thread slightly on topic: I play games to relax and have fun while challenging myself. I'm sure many of us realize that websites and programs not working can make some of us completely irrationally furious within a span of about six seconds...

Quite simply, the bar for Dominion to be a game I can/want to play and enjoy online is not "almost acceptable.. if you patch and use user modifications". My love of the game does not extend enough that I'm willing to enrage myself over poor coding and bugs; i'd rather play a worse game that doesn't make me quite as angry.

Clearly this post is slightly silly as it isn't reaching the devs but I just felt like giving my opinion that the people who complain continuously about Goko aren't being petty or entitled; some of us simply cannot handle bugs, glitches, and feature deficits and as such the product as a whole simply isn't enough for us.  :'(

Guys, they can't all be the best online implementation of Dominion ever.

For what it's worth, they got Prince up within a week or so of it being released, and implemented it correctly.

I think it was like a month, not a week. But I agree it was a perfectly reasonable timeframe. And of course an hour after Prince was revealed, there were doubters on f.ds asking what on earth is taking so long, surely any competent team could implement Prince in an hour.

In fairness, Goko was not aware that it was being released, so was quite quick to go on there, as they had to implement order of duration + prince cards. I seem to remember they released one of the expansions (Guilds maybe?) at the same as the actual cards, which was pretty good.

except that implies there's more than one available

The implication was that the Isotropic implementation was better.

Is it possible to change language settings on Goko?  Or does everyone *have* to play in English?

Goko was going to implement some other relevant board gaming languages, but that never happened, and I don't remember Making Fun saying anything about it.

Pity.  I can't think of a better way to learn Finnish.

So I finally went and tried it, and it worked fine for me.  With only the base set in play, there aren't too many weird things to happen, except my misclicking about 10% of the time.

Though I am reminded of one of the reasons I quit playing.  I'm still terrible.  I can beat the bots about 1 game in 10, and my wife approximately never.
