Title: Greatest Isotropic Moments of 2011
Post by: theory on December 08, 2011, 11:21:10 pm
Submit your favorite Isotropic moments of 2011 here.  It can be funny, incredible, unlucky, epic, epic fail -- anything that is out of the ordinary, we want to see it!

I'll start it off!

It was a Tournament game, and I started turn 13 with no provinces.  In fact, my score was -3 at that point.  By the end of the turn I had all 5 Prizes, bought all 7 remaining Provinces, all the Duchies, and all but one remaining Estate.

Gaining all 5 Prizes on a single turn which I started with no Provinces is what I think makes this game noteworthy.

Epic turn, I wonder how much the Diadem was worth...

$27+2 I think.

Edit: But one could have gotten some more by Trusty Steed, which was played for cards/$ despite empty deck.

Yeah, I saw that as well, but didn't want to be nitpicky.

Heh, I had the exact same Pirate Ship/Tunnel thing happen to me, except my opponent quit 5 turns later instead of right away. I have no idea what game it was in though, and I doubt having the same exact thing would be too interesting.

Of all the games I've played, this is the one I like to talk about the most. I've never been so utterly crushed.

Not sure if this was on the list last year but here it is.

With a little  help of my opponents Council Rooms I managed to make coppers worth 10$, played 11 of them and had enough buys to buy all Provinces.

I think the first ever game with a depleted Gold pile (due to heavy Tunneling) deserves a spot.

This was mine: http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111205-055307-da61f400.html
Provinces were gone as well, but hey.

Last turn:
Code: [Select]
  --- Davio's turn 19 ---
   Davio plays a Golem.
   ... (Davio reshuffles.)
   ... revealing a Gold, a Copper, a Gold, a Gold, a Silver, a Copper, a Copper, a Gold, a Gold, an Estate, a Copper, an Estate, a Copper, a Tunnel, a Gold, a Copper, a Province, a Gold, a Copper, a Gold, a Tunnel, a Tunnel, a Gold, a Golem, a Gold, an Estate, a Gold, a Duchy, a Gold, a Gold, a Tunnel, a Margrave, a Duchy, a Province, a Province, a Gold, a Potion, and a Gold.

   Davio buys a Province.
   Davio buys an Estate.
(Davio draws: 2 Coppers, an Estate, a Gold, and a Golem.)

All Provinces are gone.
Davio wins!
I ended up with 21/30 Golds that game.

If anyone has a better example of heavy Tunneling/Gold depletion, please post.

Not a better example, but a notable one for me.

Quote
First plays a Loan.
... drawing and revealing 5 Tunnels and then a Copper.
... trashing the Copper.
... discarding 5 Tunnels.
... ... revealing a Tunnel and gaining a Gold.
... ... revealing a Tunnel and gaining a Gold.
... ... revealing a Tunnel and gaining a Gold.
... ... revealing a Tunnel and gaining a Gold.
... ... revealing a Tunnel and gaining a Gold.
http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111127-223415-a1013f10.html

Without Loan I would have a dead hand of five Tunnels next turn.
Let's see if anyone can beat this without using Golem  ;D

Talking about depletion besides Gold, there was a game with zero Silver in the supply with help from Trader. What is interesting is, my opponent played Trader to trash his Gardens, and only gained one Silver because there were no more.

http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111202-074932-eb9806fb.html#lespeutere-show-turn-19

This game has the most consecutive turns playing Masquerades for me. I only had 2 Masquerades, but kept chaining them from turn 3 to 13, where the chain broke in turn 14 because I drew Masquerade/Gold/Gold/Plat/Colony

I don't know if this deserves a mention, but I post it anyway ;)

In this game I had fun with a Remake / Border Village / Ill-Gotten-Gains combo.
In turn 12 and in turn 16 I suceeded to give out 2 curses by playing 1 card.

If anyone has a better example of heavy Tunneling/Gold depletion, please post.

I depleted golds once not due to Tunnel, but due to Hoard; ended up with 27/30 of them.  (Does it count if 26 of these were gained on the final turn and never saw any action?)

http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111130-181516-71d0a7c5.html

The game was interesting because the ingredients were there for a megaturn (King's Court, Bridge, Smithy), but there were NO +Actions cards of any kind, not even +1 Action.

http://www.dominiondeck.com/games/no-trashing-no-actions

However, the Royal Seal let me top-deck KC/KC/Smithy/Smithy/Smithy on my next-to-last turn, all but guaranteeing I could draw my whole deck for the last turn.  Not to mention, my next five hands would have consisted of only Golds (plus a Duchy where I misclicked).

EDIT: I wonder what's the most Gold anyone has obtained? 27/30 is pretty close to PileDriver.  Seems unlikely anyone could get ALL the gold, unless the opponent is just awful (or is using some alternative strategy).

Here is my Goons record.

WHARF 2 THA BRIDGE plays a Goons.
   ... getting +1 buy and +$2.
   ... steelrabbit discards 17 cards.

It came after a mega-turn and he took so long to click all of his cards that I thought he was disconnecting on me.

I kind of wish I had an interesting game to post that didn't involve King's Court, but oh well.

*Almost* Good Stewardship (i.e. not being wasteful)

http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111115-110629-8be83c28.html#shark_bait-show-turn-11

I had just reshuffled so I was at the start of my deck.  In the next 4 hands, every card was absolutely vital in the way it was used.  A menagerie for +3 cards.  An inn gives +2 actions to activate treasure maps.  An ironworks gains an estate to draw one of those golds.  Scheme puts the inn back on top.  Next turn, the inn draws an herbalist which top decks a gold.  Next turn, another herbalist top decks yet another gold.  Lastly, an ironworks gains an estate and the last province is bought.  You'll notice throughout this single pass through my deck each turn, all money, buys and actions (except for 1 on turn 12) are used to their full extent.

Just another game: Epic possession fail, I am not sure whether it is ok to posting something which is not played by me but happens in my turn.

http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111114-205142-9aa470ff.html#cybaster-show-poss-turn-19-3

--- cybaster's turn (possessed by jmetsr) ---
   cybaster plays a Golem.
... revealing a Copper, a Chancellor, an Estate, and a Throne Room.
... discarding the Copper and the Estate.
   ... playing the Chancellor first.
   ... ... getting +$2.
... ... putting the deck into the discard pile.
... playing the Throne Room second.
   ... ... and plays a Possession.
... ... and plays the Possession again.

My opponent possessed me and my hand has golem, possession. My opponent played golem and revealed  throne room and chancellor, the throne room forced my opponent to play possession in my turn twice...

If it is not ok to post my opponent's action, I can delete this reply.

I already posted a session report, but I'm rather partial to this game where I bought all 10 Curses in one turn for the win:

http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111205-091357-31fec093.html

(Noting again that I only had to buy out the Curses because I stupidly played my Coppers and couldn't buy the last Grand Market.)

A very similar game was on the list last time. The game was played by First, not Julle.  Since it was such a similar game I doubt it will make the list, but it's a great moment nonetheless!

I suspect there will be some competition here for what is "best."  This one was mine (already posted a report):

http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111031-201625-01409a65.html

Halloween night!  The Golds were depleted before the last turn in this one, but most noteworthy for me is that over half the pile of Golds was distributed in just three turns (my 11 and 12, my opponent's 12).  KC-Golem was a bit of a help here.

I open crossroads ambassador with 2/5. On turn 3, I buy a second ambassador. On turn 4, I play an ambassador, returning a curse to the supply. I then proceed to play at least one ambassador every turn for the rest of the game. On all but 2 turns, I return at least one curse to the supply. At the end of the game, I still have 3 curses.

This doesn't seem to come close to Chogg's, but here's a game where my opponent had an incredible comeback in a game I was sure I'd won:

Mostly because on turn 17, he managed to King's Court a Saboteur and hit Gold, Gold, Province. And gave me 3 curses on the same turn.

Thanks to King's Courted Mints, my opponent got all 12 Platinums. I got none.

I won.

And honestly, I don't think my opponent did anything wrong.

http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20110518-201954-b8af4530.html

I've also managed to win a game where my opponent gobbled up all 10 Peddlers. Thank goodness Workshops and Vineyards were around.

http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20110903-163449-02ad1731.html

Or how about this one, where my opponent got the King's Court + Masquerade strategy going, and whittled me down to almost nothing... but he slipped up at the end, and I managed to break the pin.

http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20110830-192259-df8d6abf.html

(His mistake was at turn 20. His deck contained two King's Courts, a Masquerade, and a Nobles. Mine contained a King's Court, a Masquerade, two Nobles, and a Gold. He trashed a Gold he got from me, and then a Nobles... and then ANOTHER Nobles. He should've kept that last Nobles. He needed it.)

This game I just played is far from great play style, but I found it interesting, at least to me. My opponent played much better than I did, but in the end allowed me to 3 pile an ending and win with 4 points to his 3.

I think I need to learn how to play better. :)

EDIT: Apparently I can win -1 to -2, too!

I guess I have pretty boring games. I think the most memorable one is this:

I'd call it the "No Havens Under Any Circumstances" Award:

http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111209-154053-0fa7b368.html (http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111209-154053-0fa7b368.html)

Quote
   --- Kemps's turn 1 ---
   Kemps plays 2 Coppers.
   Kemps buys a Haven.
   (Kemps draws: 5 Coppers.)

--- MONSTERS's turn 2 ---
MONSTERS does nothing.
(MONSTERS reshuffles.)
(MONSTERS draws: 4 Coppers and an Upgrade.)

...

--- MONSTERS's turn 4 ---
MONSTERS does nothing.
(MONSTERS reshuffles.)
(MONSTERS draws: 2 Coppers, an Estate, an Upgrade, and a Farming Village.)

...

--- MONSTERS's turn 9 ---
MONSTERS plays a Black Market.
... getting +$2.
... drawing a Royal Seal, a Crossroads, and a Great Hall from the Black Market deck.
... playing 4 Coppers.
... MONSTERS buys a Great Hall.
... returning a Royal Seal and a Crossroads to the bottom of the Black Market deck.
MONSTERS buys a Silver.
(MONSTERS reshuffles.)
(MONSTERS draws: a Farming Village, a Great Hall, a Silver, a Worker's Village, and an Upgrade.)

...

This is not meant to be mean to MONSTERS. We discussed his Havenphobia and he expressed a bad history with the card. I just thought it was particularly weird that he chose Great Hall / Silver over Royal Seal or Gold.

This (http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111010-220152-31282e0d.html) was kind of a silly game, with no one getting up to $6 until like turn 30 thanks to both of us grabbing a ton of ambassadors and pingponging stuff back and forth. It's not often that I'm able to say that if one of us had grabbed bureaucrat, it would've broken the game open. It's also not often that a search for ambassador in a dominion log leads to 217 results.

This (http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20110711-093900-54bf03f8.html) game featured a very large number of saboteurs, which was kind of silly. It also features me getting ridiculously lucky in the early game(chapel hits 3E+C, two hands later has 5 coppers which I can use to buy a mint).

If games with large numbers of coppersmiths are still on the table, then I think I can one-up everyone so far here (http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111123-022017-d74a15c3.html).

Here's a somewhat silly game.

http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111211-221042-6f732b99.html

I open 5/2. So I think "Hey, I can get an early Minion, then embargo Gold and initiate a Minion engine." So I open Minion/Embargo. Then the Minions get embargoed. Then the Embargoes get embargoed.

And then we both decide we don't care what happens anymore, so we mess around. Some highlights include:
Both of us trying to start Worker's Village/Courtyard engines.
sssss buying a Hoard off a Black Market to circumvent the embargo, causing me to buy a Black Market to see if I can get the Tunnel in there (I have a decent Minion advantage.) Of course I don't get it...but I do get to steal some Hoarded Gold with Noble Brigand :D
Mentions of M.A.D. in the chat
This turn:
Quote
   --- sssss's turn 22 ---
   sssss plays a Worker's Village.
... drawing 1 card and getting +2 actions and +1 buy.
   sssss plays a Worker's Village.
   ... (sssss reshuffles.)
... drawing 1 card and getting +2 actions and +1 buy.
   sssss plays a Worker's Village.
... drawing 1 card and getting +2 actions and +1 buy.
   sssss plays a Salvager.
   ... trashing a Province for +$8 and +1 buy.
sssss plays a Copper, a Hoard, and a Silver.
   sssss buys an Estate.
   ... gaining a Gold.
   sssss buys an Estate.
   ... gaining a Gold.
   sssss buys an Estate.
   ... gaining a Gold.
   sssss buys an Estate.
   ... gaining a Gold.
   sssss buys an Estate.
   ... gaining a Gold.
(sssss draws: a Duchy, a Silver, a Mine, a Copper, and a Gold.)

Here's another from a lot longer ago. Calling it "Silver Overload" until further notice (this was before all the Hinterlands silver cards)
http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20110821-162740-b8ad1c37.html

Turn 13: Down 4 Provinces to 1
Turn 14: Somehow get the first prize. Notice that Gardens is in the game...
I then proceed to play Trusty Steed to gain 4 Silvers every time I can. End result? 18 Silvers, exactly 50 cards in deck, and just enough Gardens to eek out a win. I still can't believe I pulled it off.

Look at my turn 11. We were both building up in a very similar way, until I snatched the victory before he could really get anywhere, buying the provinces and 8 pawns. The game ends and I win 21-9. The score is not great, but who knows whether I would have won or not if I had kept the game going :P

Epic Treasure Map fail:

http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20110315-091935-d57b233c.html (http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20110315-091935-d57b233c.html)

I went by ad_infinitum at the time.  On Jungbluth's turn 9, he (she?) Possesses me and trashes my Treasure Maps, gaining four Gold.  And, because I was Possessed at the time, the Treasure Maps weren't actually trashed, just discarded; and they conveniently appeared together in my hand again the next time Jungbluth Possessed me two turns later, on Jungluth's turn 11.

The best that can be said for it is that I finally got my Treasure Maps a few turns later.

My greatest Domnion moment on Isotropic came fairly recently, December 6 of this year.  It involved two "SLAM" achievements (20 points in one turn) in the same game, made possible by a turn-12 purchase of six(!) Grand Markets.  The two slams came on my 14th and 17th turns, and my opponent then resigned on his 17th turn.

If anyone has a better example of heavy Tunneling/Gold depletion, please post.

It depends on what you mean by "better." I'll have to go looking for it, but I have a three (or maybe four) player game where we inadvertantly ended the game by piling out the golds because of Warehouse + Tunnell shenannigans. I don't think anyone had more than 12 points that game . . . .

With help from Mandarin in Black Market, you can receive a full refund.

... ... and plays the Black Market again.

#1 Robz888: 45 points (3 Provinces, 4 Duchies, 4 Harems, 4 Great Halls, and 3 Estates); 24 turns
         opening: Bazaar / nothing
         [40 cards] 4 Great Halls, 4 Harems, 3 Hoards, 2 Bazaars, 1 Envoy, 1 Moneylender, 2 Coppers, 1 Silver, 12 Golds, 3 Estates, 4 Duchies, 3 Provinces

#1 rakovsky: 45 points (3 Provinces, 4 Duchies, 4 Harems, 4 Great Halls, and 3 Estates); 24 turns

It's funny how even the score is yet the money patterns are very different

you can do this at most once each game.

That's not actually true! If you're clever, you can do it many times per game. Whenever you gain Mandarin, you put your treasures in play on top of the deck. For example, you could play a Black Market to play the treasures from your hand, then play a University to gain a Mandarin, putting your treasures on top of the deck, and then play more cards to draw them again.

I've never seen it done, though, takes some pretty slick combinations of cards.

Right, thanks for correcting me. Probably University/Mandarin/Black Market/ Watchtower(to draw those treasures back) ? I am not a fan of 4-card combo.

This is awesome. I have seen such shenanigans with forge, but kings-courting a chapel to remove 7 curses and a copper deserves some serious style points.

just finished now!
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201112/14/game-20111214-072748-6c16f581.html

theme:
colony game, with Pirate Ship, bishop and city. no +buy (until city 3rd level)

Pre-start Comment:
I've great stats with pirates, i love playing them. I've won almost all matches with Pirate ship but one. last one i've played. I was brutally owned by an opponent that avoided buying pirates, but go for big money soon and then border village/ wharf... I was totally brutalized by 4-wharf hands in repetitions... before my pirates reach value 8, my opponent was rulling 7-0 in provinces. A devastating match!
So I've been rethinking my pirates strategy, but this match seems not so winnable without pirates, so I was preparing to kill his money and mine, in order to win with richer pirates.
This time I opened loan/Pirate.
My opponent was level 0, avoids buying pirates and started his pure big money strategy!
I hit a lot of money, but he reached soon enough buypower to buy colonies... I lost some turns to buy cities, other to buy other pirates, some to buy bishops... I was slow. I've no multibuy.

At one point he was leading 4-2 colonies 1-0 provinces and 15-4 VP tokens due to bishop... I was desperate... this is the FUNERAL of pirate ships, my lovely pirate ships :(
I started to buy a city at time, in order to get +2cards and to cycle all my deck everytime to play all my pirates everytime killing every single copper of my opponent... Two turns buying last two cities (9-1 split, great! and there are only 3 pirate ship missing, in order to get second city bonus) and my opponent buught the seventh colony... 5-2 split. It's hard now to win, regardless of the strategy I need time: get the second city bonus and buying whatever green card is on the table. possibly bishopping platinums and other stuffs.

First turn with +2+2 cities, all cards cycled, 7 pirates played, every money of my opponent killed! great! Three more turns to buy all pirates and to get multibuy! My opponent was astonished, he doesn't know how to go on... he started bishopping whatever, buying coppers and estates. I killed every time every copper he bought!

I'll try to find some examples of play where I did something boneheaded, but this game my opponent played a pirate ship 21 times, attacking EVERY time, hitting on 19 of those times, despite the fact that there was no way to make use of all that coin, because the only +buy was on trade route, and there was no +actions, so you couldn't possibly play the pirate ship and the trade route on the same turn.

http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20110923-115621-600df9f7.html

I actually trashed a province with a trading post on turn 19... just to try to burn the stack faster.

A minor moment of fail: in this (http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111026-073300-5ea80548.html) game, I go for pirate ships, and my opponent responds with getting black markets for virtual money and using bishops to trash his money. Sounds great...except there were no villages in the game, I just started using my ships as gold, and he was stuck with like $2/turn. He resigned shortly afterwards.

Clearly way too one-sided to be a great game, but just a nod to guided:

I just played this game. Unfortunately, I did not have the strategic mind (or incredible luck) of my opponent, Nucleus:

— Nucleus's turn 2 —
Nucleus plays 4 Coppers.
Nucleus buys a Treasure Map.
(Nucleus reshuffles.)
(Nucleus draws: 2 Coppers, 2 Estates, and a Silver.)
...
— Nucleus's turn 3 —
Nucleus plays 2 Coppers and a Silver.
Nucleus buys a Treasure Map.
(Nucleus draws: 5 Coppers.)
...
— Nucleus's turn 4 —
Nucleus plays 5 Coppers.
Nucleus buys a Mint.
... trashing 5 Coppers from the play area.
(Nucleus reshuffles.)
(Nucleus draws: 2 Treasure Maps, an Estate, a Copper, and a Silver.)
...
— Nucleus's turn 5 —
Nucleus plays a Treasure Map.
... trashing the Treasure Map.
... trashing a Treasure Map from hand.
... gaining 4 Golds on the deck.
Nucleus plays a Copper and a Silver.
Nucleus buys a Hamlet.

I just noticed this (repost from the Boneheaded Plays thread) game I was in a while back.
Call it the "Knee-jerk Moat Award".

http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111205-201250-dadffa59.html

--- Ice Cream Emperor's turn 20 ---
Ice Cream Emperor plays a Wharf.
... drawing 2 cards and getting +1 buy.
Ice Cream Emperor plays 2 Coppers, a Gold, and 2 Silvers.
Ice Cream Emperor buys a Province.
(Ice Cream Emperor draws: a Copper, a Moat, a Steward, and 2 Tournaments.)

   --- jtotheonah's turn 20 ---
jtotheonah draws 2 cards and gets +1 buy from the Wharf.
   jtotheonah plays a Fortune Teller.
   ... getting +$2.
... Ice Cream Emperor reveals a Moat.

Wherein I buy a Fortune Teller even though my opponent is going for Tournaments (Here let me just put that Province on top of your deck for you). But even more foolishly, when I finally play the Fortune Teller, and he has two Tournaments in hand AND A WHARF IN PLAY, and he blocks it with his Moat! Scrolling down will reveal the next green card on his deck was a Province.

A little later I play the FT again (because apparently I don't want to win) and it enables him to gain his first and only prize of the game.

This probably takes too much explanation to make the list, but I thought it was pretty funny once you put it all together.

Sometimes your opponent is lucky. Sometimes he's so lucky you don't have any chance to win. And sometimes he is just so incredibly lucky you are thinking to yourself "Is this some kind of bad joke???"

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201112/16/game-20111216-173139-2c28cfb6.html

On a board with Hamlet-Library combo, my opponent got 2/5 while I got 3/4. I picked Swindler hoping maybe I will turn his Hamlet into an Estate or his Library into a Duchy. But this is what really happened:

— Headso's turn 3 —
Headso plays a Hamlet.
... drawing 1 card and getting +1 action.
... discarding 1 card and getting +1 action.
... discarding 1 card and getting +1 buy.
Headso plays a Library.
... drawing 1 card.
... drawing 1 card.
... drawing 1 card.
... drawing 1 card.
... drawing 1 card.
Headso plays 6 Coppers.
Headso buys a Hoard.

This one was kind of fun.  It's not uncommon to end a game by buying 1-2 curses to empty the curse pile.  But, I've never bought all 10 curses in one game-ending turn.

I started greening earlier, so had a 2 province lead, but his deck was definitely better than mine, and with King's Court, Festival, Wharf, and Merchant Ship in there, there was the potential for an epic turn on his part.  So, in turn 12 I ended up with 13 buys, but only $13.  One pile was gone, and there was only one Hamlet left, and there was only one way for me to end it....

Possible Isotropic bug turns into bizarre KC-Watchtower combo for a 110 point turn.

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201112/16/game-20111216-161830-9ea7002a.html (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201112/16/game-20111216-161830-9ea7002a.html)

KC-Bridge game, but all the actions on the board were terminal.  Forge was there to keep the deck lean.

On turn 13, I did KC-KC-Bridge-Forge, forging my last copper.  Because of the Bridge, I could forge it into anything costing up to $3.  Somehow I completely overlooked Steward and opted for Watchtower.  I knew it wouldn't do much when combined with KC, but I figured it was at least better than a copper.  Based on my reading of Forge, I expected to just get one Watchtower.  Instead, despite the fact that I had nothing to trash, it forced me to take 3 cards.  Not really thinking, I grabbed 2 more Watchtowers, with a sinking feeling that I had just clogged my engine with useless terminals.

Turn 14, nothing to do.

Turn 15.  KC-KC-KC-Bridge-Watchtower, drawing 6 cards, then a series of KCs, Bridges, and more Watchtowers.  I look up.  13 buys and a bunch of cash.  How much do Colonies cost?  $0.  I laughed, shocked at that result after the previous two turns, then bought all of the Colonies and half the Provinces.

Lessons learned: (1) Lacking any +action, KC can do fine by itself.  (2) KC-Watchtower can be really powerful.

The Forge play was not a bug.  There is actually a thread around here somewhere discussing the differences between Forge and cards like Remodel.  As it stands, Forging no cards requires you to take a card costing $0, and the play you experienced was correct.  (As with most things like this I suspect the Forge FAQ explains it.)

Don't call it a comeback... OK, it was a comeback...

Colony game with standard victory point cards & curses only.

At turn 14, I am down by 38 points thanks to my opponent's Tournament/Province push.  At that point, I decide my only shot is to slow his deck down so I ditch my initial strategy, avoid green cards and pick up 3 Young Witches and another KC.

Turn 16, now down by 49, my engine launches the 7 remaining curses into his/her deck and I pick up a key Rabble.

Turn 21, now down by 53, I finally hit my triple colony turn.  4 turns later, I add 2 more.   We race to whittle down the remaining point cards, ending up tied at 69, with my winning on turns.

Note: my 69 points were on 8 cards, my opponent's 69 took 30 cards.

Has anyone here had a larger come from behind win (53 points) under these point conditions?  If so, then I'd like to see it...

Oh man. How could I forget this one?

Everyone has turns where they have enough coins to buy a Province, but they refuse to buy one, because some other purchase (like a Gold) is a better choice. But how many times does that happen in a typical game? Once? Twice?

Here's a game where I refused a Province ELEVEN times.

http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20110416-194516-f3362a87.html

The key cards here were Chapel, Treasure Map, Thief, and Nobles. My opponent caught me napping; he grabbed two Treasure Maps, and quickly Chapel-ed down to five cards. I didn't realize what trouble I was in until the four Golds appeared on top of his deck.

With my doom imminent, I grabbed a couple of Thieves. I didn't think I stood a chance, but it was my only hope.

Well, my opponent jumped to a 6-1 Province lead, but I was able to shut down his economy before he could grab the last Province. Eventually, my opponent had to grab Coppers in an attempt to get things going again. Meanwhile, I slowly gobbled up the Nobles, then the Duchies, and then an Estate before finally grabbing the last Province. I won 51-43.

I had plenty of opportunities during this game to buy the last Province. But of course, I couldn't; that would've been suicide. I had to wait until I had completed my comeback.

Here's a game where I refused a Province ELEVEN times.

Well, there is one game I will never forget. My opponent could have bought a Province FOURTEEN times in a row (turns 13-26), but he needed to make some points with his Bishop first so he kept taking 4VP tokens per turn and I was completely shocked, because it was the very first time I saw this mini-Bishop-deck. http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111202-043007-d354f127.html

So yeah, sometimes it happens  ;)

This is a game I had on my old account. It was a colony game, and I was down 22 points with only 1 colony left.

And then on the last turn:

Quote
   --- Syzygy's turn 19 ---
   (Syzygy reshuffles.)
Syzygy draws 2 cards and gets +1 buy from the Wharf.
(some actions)
   Syzygy plays a Baron.

   Syzygy plays an Outpost.
Syzygy plays 2 Coppers, 2 Golds, and 4 Silvers.
   Syzygy buys a Province.
   Syzygy buys a Duchy.
   Syzygy buys a Duchy.
   Syzygy buys an Estate.
(Syzygy draws: 2 Coppers and a Gold.)

   --- Syzygy's extra turn (from Outpost) ---
Syzygy draws 2 cards and gets +1 buy from the Wharf.
Syzygy draws 2 cards and gets +1 buy from the Wharf.
Syzygy draws 2 cards and gets +1 buy from the Wharf.
Syzygy draws 2 cards and gets +1 buy from the Wharf.
   (Syzygy reshuffles.)

   Syzygy buys a Colony.
(Syzygy draws: a Duchy, a Colony, a Silver, a Tribute, and an Estate.)

All Colonies are gone.

So 13VP + 10VP from outpost turn gives me the [very lucky] win... Best comeback I have ever done

My favourites so far:

Gaining all 5 Prizes on a single turn which I started with no Provinces is what I think makes this game noteworthy.

Without Loan I would have a dead hand of five Tunnels next turn.

In this game I had fun with a Remake / Border Village / Ill-Gotten-Gains combo.

DG buys a Mint.    ... trashing 3 Silvers and 5 Coppers from the play area.

KC/Chapel

I've been trying to keep track of memorable games recently for our GameChat League on BGG, and while I don't know that any of them have quite the impact of a "great moment", here are some I found particularly remarkable:

Biggest comeback: mith 36-35 YKK (http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111006-092738-c3df8e7b.html). I got a 5/2 split on a Remake/Sea Hag board, so I decided to try a University build. Before my turn 20, I only hit 5 three more times, all with a Potion for University buys. I was down 4 Provinces, a Duchy, and a Curse in a game with no alternate victory cards or token gainers, no +Buy, and my opponent bought Duchies on his remaining turns.

Ambassador Province: mith 34-30 KP-funclub (http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111126-153117-d77f57f9.html). My opponent built a scary Fool's Gold engine, so I rushed the endgame to prevent his having more than one massive turn (remodeling a Gold and buying a Province on the same turn to make it a 6-1 split, basically ensuring I would be able to end the game on my next turn with all the cards he was giving me). Pretty sure this is the only time I've done this when it didn't immediately end the game.

Highway/Ironworks: mith 41-33 Singular Moniker (http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111127-154146-1ce64f6c.html). This time I didn't hit 4 after my opening split until turn 11. I bought a Highway, and then:

Quote
--- mith's turn 12 ---
mith plays a Scrying Pool.
... getting +1 action.
... revealing a Highway and keeping it.

Always have crazy Ironworks shenanigans in the back of my mind thanks to the puzzles posted here, but this was the first time I'd managed something so game-changing. (Opponent took all 8 Gardens, and was a bit unlucky not to end the game sooner, getting stuck with Copper buys four times.)

After each time, I mentioned to him that he would have gotten the silver in hand instead of on his deck if he didn't reveal the watchtower.  Either he wasn't reading the chat, or he thought he was better off with the silver in his next hand.

ETA, each of the three time he ended up with $2 instead of $4, and bought a duchess, or an embargo.

I could possibly see that as being smart, under the right circumstances. If he really only had $2 other in hand, then getting $4 isn't that good. But Silver next turn could have increased his changes at $6 or $8.

I played a game where I "Mined down".  I used Mine to change a higher-costing treasure into a lower-costing treasure twice on the same turn for my benefit.  In this case, I changed two Golds into two Horns of Plenty.  Later that turn, I played each Horn of Plenty and gained a Province for each one.

I wrote about the game in detail here:

The following moves struck me as odd:

--- mardavhol's turn 12 ---
mardavhol plays a Mine.

--- mardavhol's turn 14 ---

... ... revealing a Watchtower.
... ... putting the Silver on the deck

Ok, I could see that.

I looked back to see if it did help him, and two out of the three times he actually went from $10 and two buys to $8 and two buys.  So he effectively bought a $6 card and a $2 card instead of a Platinum and nothing.

I played quite stupidly myself, but still was able to win.  I have a bad habit of not seeing the best strategy until about the half way point, and by then it is usually waaay to late.

Just now finished this game:

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201112/19/game-20111219-145301-50aff1c4.html (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201112/19/game-20111219-145301-50aff1c4.html)

Starting on turn 9, I have a 5 card deck: Bishop, Fools Gold, Fools Gold, Fools Gold, Province. Every turn, trash Province for 5 vp, and buy Province. My opponent gets a Pirate Ship before that when he sees me getting Fools Golds, but it's too late.

Just played this one against Blooki:
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201112/19/game-20111219-171256-d8775eb2.html

I started Moneylender/Silver, he started Potion/Silver.  From there I went basically Big Money, with one Bridge for +Buy and a couple of Treasures.  He tried to construct a megaturn engine with Universities and Bridges and one Outpost.  The problem was that his drawing card was Council Room, which meant that while he was using Council Room to try to build up his engine, he was accelerating my Big Money.  At game's end, he'd bought 6 Council Rooms, and 8 Treasuries, and 9 Bridges, and still hadn't quite ever managed a megaturn; meanwhile I'd already acquired half the Provinces and 3 Duchies.  On the very last turn, he played an Outpost...and then bought the last two Universities -- 3-piling the game!  I'm not quite sure whether that was a blunder on his part, or whether it was his way of resigning.

The relevant cards in the kingdom were:  Golem, Haggler, Possession and Tunnel.

We all went for Possession and picked-up free Golems off of Haggler. Several times, Golems played in Possessed turns triggered Possession. We might not have played the Golems, but the chance to trigger the tunnels made it irresistible.  The crazyness peaked with BullCityFats getting Possessed on his own turn, as the Possession chain wrapped all the way around the table:

Just played today.
In a Mountebank game, without +buy, all the curses were out, and we both managed to trash them with lookout…
But without the help of my opponent, I think I would lose the game :

Quote
— fag's turn 23 —
fag plays a Swindler.
... getting +$2.
... brokoli turns up a Curse and trashes it.
... replacing brokoli's Curse with a Copper.

fag plays 3 Coppers and a Silver.
fag buys a Gold.
(fag reshuffles.)
(fag draws: a Copper, a Scheme, and 3 Silvers.)

[because all curses were out, the only 0$ card was copper].

This is fun, because the game was very, very close :

Quote
#1 brokoli: 36 points (3 Provinces, 3 Duchies, 7 ▼, and 2 Estates); 28 turns
         opening: Monument / Lookout
         [40 cards] 3 Schemes, 2 Lookouts, 2 Mountebanks, 1 Monument, 10 Coppers, 9 Silvers, 1 Potion, 4 Golds, 2 Estates, 3 Duchies, 3 Provinces

#2 fag: 36 points (5 Provinces, 3 ▼, and 3 Estates); 29 turns
     opening: Monument / Swindler
     [43 cards] 3 Lookouts, 2 Mountebanks, 1 Monument, 1 Scheme, 1 Swindler, 12 Coppers, 10 Silvers, 5 Golds, 3 Estates, 5 Provinces

So, thank to swindler I won the game :D

Well, I tried to resist posting this one here because I've mentioned it in a couple other places on the forum, and because it's yet another King's Court / Grand Market / Bridge megaturn, but eventually I decided it belongs on a "greatest Isotropic moments" list for sheer neatness if for no other reason: that time when I had exactly 32 buys and used them to buy all eight Colonies, Provinces, Duchies, and Estates on one turn.

Logs are annoying in Masq-pin games, because they don't show what was being passed, or even "passes a card" vs "has nothing to pass." It would be nice if it did, because there's no way to know when a person has successfully not passed a card.

The game is over! (All Provinces are gone.)
Jack Rudd has 71 points (8 Fairgrounds [16 different cards], 5 Duchies, a Province, and 2 Estates) and took 22 turns.
dasbruce has 54 points (7 Provinces, 3 Duchies, and 3 Estates) and took 22 turns.

It's common to pull those off; it's rarer to do it when you're already 7-0 down in Provinces.

In a KC-Masq pin game (without handsize attacks!) we manage to pin each other. Check out turns 19 and 20:

Code: [Select]
--- GendoIkari's turn 19 ---
GendoIkari buys a Copper.
(GendoIkari reshuffles.)
(GendoIkari draws: a Copper.)

   --- Yoyo's turn 19 ---
   Yoyo buys a Copper.
   (Yoyo reshuffles.)
(Yoyo draws: a Copper, a Masquerade, and 2 King's Courts.)

--- GendoIkari's turn 20 ---
GendoIkari plays a Copper.
GendoIkari buys a Copper.
(GendoIkari reshuffles.)
(GendoIkari draws: 2 Coppers.)

   --- Yoyo's turn 20 ---
   Yoyo buys a Copper.
   (Yoyo reshuffles.)
(Yoyo draws: a Masquerade, 2 Coppers, and 2 King's Courts.)

I had 5 Provinces by the time the pin started. He wins both because he had trashed my deck more than I'd trashed his, and he had cards on his Native Village mat.

this is my favorite win. there's gardens, but there's no +buy. the dominant strategy is moneylender + venture. but i really wanted a gardens game, so i open shanty town + thief and proceeded to buy nothing but shanty towns, thieves, cellars, and green. after i got behind by 3 provinces, i started to make a self-deprecating joke butdecided not to. i'm glad i didn't; i still don't know how to analyze what happened this game.

Here's a pretty funny game I just played.

   — modillen's turn 17 —
   modillen plays a Trader.
   ... trashing a Province.
modillen plays a Copper and 2 Silvers.
   modillen buys a Trader.
(modillen draws: 2 Coppers and 3 Silvers.)

It was a Gardens-Trader game, and the Silver pile actually ran out. I think my opponent was on autopilot and didn't realize this, so he trashed his Province for no reason. (He did it again a few turns later, trashing a Gold for nothing when he could have bought a Duchy.)

Even if there were enough Silvers left, I don't think this is a good play because a Province is guaranteed 6 points, whereas trading it for 8 Silvers gives you an expectation of 0.7 points per Garden. He only had 3 Gardens, but you'd need 9 Gardens to make this play profitable points-wise. Still, I got a kick out of it.

I'd say it could be okay if you have 5 or 6 Gardens, and the game is likely to drag out a while longer since it ought to help out the buying power in a heavy green deck, but now that I have said that, I am not sure what is going on if you have 5+ Gardens, a Province, and expect the game to drag out much longer.

There were no $2 cards in the game.  My opponent opened nothing/Hunting Party.  This backfired rather spectacularly on his turns 3 and 4:

   --- mac'n's turn 3 ---

... drawing 1 card and getting +1 action.
   ... revealing 2 Coppers and 3 Estates.
   ... revealing a Copper, a Copper, a Copper, a Copper, and a Copper.
   ... discarding 5 Coppers.
   mac'n plays 2 Coppers.
   (mac'n reshuffles.)
(mac'n draws: a Copper, a Hunting Party, and 3 Estates.)

   --- mac'n's turn 4 ---
   mac'n plays a Hunting Party.
... drawing 1 card and getting +1 action.
   ... revealing 2 Coppers and 3 Estates.
   ... revealing a Copper, a Copper, a Copper, a Copper, and a Copper.
   ... discarding 5 Coppers.
   (mac'n reshuffles.)

here are a few of my favorite games. a bit of luck, a bit of brag.

beautiful shuffle luck (http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111029-190318-aaa6a27b.html) - a near-perfect draw for the board allows me to have a deck of 2 grand markets, 2 spies, a remake, and a few silver in 7 turns.

"the duchy/cellar" (http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20110611-125646-6f68016d.html) - this one is under my old (group play) nick. i try gardens strategies on probably 95% of the boards i see them, and my opponent knew this. not sure what i was thinking, but i went with a wildcard (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYtjpIwamos) play and was somehow able to pull off a draw with my nemesis.

finishing in style (http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111004-153245-59a37b06.html) - i put this one in the Finishing in Style (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=779.msg10964#msg10964) thread but it can probably go here too. i put an embargo on curses so that i could finish them off to steal an undeserved win.

7 point gardens (http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20110623-101300-d3088c23.html) - with the help of his ambassador, i managed to get 7 point gardens when the only plus buy/gain in the game was a contraband.

Here's a ridiculous game that featured the dreaded King's Court-Scheme and the even more dreaded King's Court-Goons-Masquerade, which backfires, destroying its own deck. Bear with the fog of Masquerade...

   --- Elyv's turn 21 ---
...
(Elyv draws: a Masquerade, a Fishing Village, 2 King's Courts, and a Goons.)

This and 1 copper is Elyv's entire deck at this point, and I'm pretty sure the preceding turns have been working up to this, since Elyv isn't even buying anything for VP with Goons.

   --- yoz's turn 22 ---
yoz puts a King's Court, a Scheme, and a Masquerade back on the deck (first on top).
(yoz reshuffles.)
(yoz draws: a Masquerade, a Scheme, a King's Court, a Crossroads, and an Ambassador.)

On my turn, I play some Masquerade followed by some Goons -- probably not the correct order, but Elyv ends up with 2 King's Courts and a Masquerade in hand. Then Elyv's combo goes poorly from this standpoint, as I save the copper I receive in Masquerade #1 to pass back in Masquerade #3:

   --- Elyv's turn 22 ---
   Elyv plays a King's Court.
   ... and plays a King's Court.
   ... ... and plays a Masquerade.
   ... ... ... (Elyv reshuffles.)
   ... ... ... drawing 2 cards.
   ... ... ... trashing a Crossroads.
... ... and plays the Masquerade again.
   ... ... ... drawing 1 card.
   ... ... ... trashing an Ambassador.
... ... and plays the Masquerade a third time.
   ... ... ... drawing nothing.
... and plays the King's Court again.
... ... but plays no action with it.
... and plays the King's Court a third time.
... ... but plays no action with it.
Elyv resigns from the game (client disconnected or unresponsive).

The final accounting is:

#2 Elyv: resigned (1st); 22 turns
      [4 cards] 2 King's Courts, 1 Masquerade, 1 Copper

That was pretty embarassing, yeah. In my (very weak) defense, it was the first time I'd ever tried to set up the pin, but I still felt like a complete idiot.

Posting this one for my friend obviated. The "Salt The Earth" Award, or, for fans of "Oklahoma!", the "The Farmer and the Swindler Should Be Friends" Award:

   --- Howieg's turn 16 ---
   Howieg plays a Bazaar.
... drawing 1 card and getting +2 actions and +$1.
   Howieg plays a Swindler.
   ... getting +$2.
... obviated turns up a Province and trashes it.
   ... replacing obviated's Province with a Province.
   Howieg plays a Swindler.
   ... getting +$2.
... obviated turns up a Silver and trashes it.
   ... replacing obviated's Silver with a Swindler.
   Howieg plays a Silver.
   Howieg buys a Farmland.
   ... trashing a Farmland.
   ... gaining nothing.

All Provinces are gone.
obviated wins!

WHARF 2 THA BRIDGE and I just played this exciting game (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201112/27/game-20111227-234108-ab14a34b.html), which featured such powerful cards as Mountebank, Scrying Pool, Festival, Nobles, Peddler, and Coppersmith (which yes was pretty powerful in this setup).  Now of course, one may ask "why Scry when Mountebank will just flood your deck with Copper and Curse?"  Well, on turn 17:

WHARF 2 THA BRIDGE buys a Peddler.
(WHARF 2 THA BRIDGE draws: 2 Scrying Pools, a Curse, and 2 Warehouses.)

Naturally, WHARF bought three Provinces the next turn.  Not to be outdone, on turn 20 I:

Has someone done an article on Inn + Scrying Pool? Because that seems like an awesome combo. Of course, there needs to be other powerful actions to go with it.

Okay, I know this strategy has been well posted, but check out how this guy fails at doing it correctly, and I think I came up with a funny counter in buying up the curses.  51 rounds, I won with 2 cards in my deck, 63 to 3.  Crazy

You were very lucky that he (accidentally?) didn't trash the last GM and then he had to send it back to you so you could bought the last Estate. And you did nothing instead of buying Curses or Coppers for quite a long time...

So I just played a game with Witch, Border Village, Golem, Salvager, Lookout, Hamlet, and Haggler.

I get a Witch after my opponent has gotten 2 of them, so I spend most of the game catching up until...

Quote
— Kemps's turn 22 —
Kemps plays a Hamlet.
... drawing 1 card and getting +1 action.
... discarding 1 card and getting +1 action.
Kemps plays a Golem.
... (Kemps reshuffles.)
... revealing a Gold, a Border Village, a Copper, a Province, a Gold, and a Hamlet.
... discarding the Copper, the Province, and the 2 Golds.
... playing the Border Village first.
... ... drawing 1 card and getting +2 actions.
... playing the Hamlet second.
... ... drawing 1 card and getting +1 action.
Kemps plays a Golem.
... revealing a Hamlet, a Copper, and a Witch.
... discarding the Copper.
... playing the Witch first.
... ... drawing 2 cards.
... ... Anonymouse gains nothing.
... playing the Hamlet second.
... ... drawing 1 card and getting +1 action.
... ... discarding 1 card and getting +1 action.
Kemps plays a Witch.
... drawing 2 cards.
... Anonymouse gains nothing.
Kemps plays a Border Village.
... drawing 1 card and getting +2 actions.
Kemps plays a Hamlet.
... drawing 1 card and getting +1 action.
... discarding 1 card and getting +1 action.
Kemps plays a Hamlet.
... drawing 1 card and getting +1 action.
Kemps plays a Salvager.
... trashing a Province for +$8 and +1 buy.
Kemps plays a Haggler.
... getting +$2.
Kemps plays a Haggler.
... getting +$2.
Kemps plays a Silver.
Kemps buys a Province.
... gaining a Border Village.
... ... gaining a Duchy.
... gaining a Border Village.
... ... gaining a Duchy.
Kemps buys a Border Village.
... gaining a Haggler.
... gaining a Witch.
... gaining a Duchy.
(Kemps reshuffles.)
(Kemps draws: a Province, a Border Village, a Haggler, a Golem, and a Silver.)

So I use Border Village to buy out the Duchies with Haggler.

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201112/31/game-20111231-152431-02200e80.html

I end up winning by 1 point.

What can you do but buy curses and coppers when you have 0 cards?  The hilarious part is, in fact, that after all of that trashing and time-wasting, he screwed up on the last turn to hand me the winner right back.

Alternatively you discard a great hand and draw Tunnel x 4 and curse the fact that you can't discard your hand to further plays of Minion despite him discarding his hand 3 more times before the end of the turn.

You should put it in 'game reports', if you're curious, though it's fine here. But don't dump such a long thing like that. If you want to put something that long, I'd suggest putting [code+][/code+] around it (without the plusses).

Maybe it would be easier to post html snippets from the game logs?  As long as you link to the isotropic css file from the blog... okay, maybe it wouldn't be easier...
