Title: LCGs I've played
Post by: GendoIkari on May 22, 2014, 01:36:26 am
Thought I'd just list the LCGs that I've had a chance to learn and play.

Dominion
Thunderstone
Ascension
Quarriors
Puzzle Strike
Trains
Android: Netrunner

I'm assuming that both Quarriors and Puzzle Strike belong here, despite not using actual cards. Perhaps I'm someone mixing "deck-building game" with "living card game", but I think there's at least a very large portion of games in either category that fit in both categories.

Anyway, I supposed I'm biased due to having spent years of my life reading about and playing Dominion first, but none of these other ones grabbed my attention the way Dominion did. Many of them just feel like Dominion knock-offs, and while playing them (especially Trains, Puzzle Strike, and Ascension), I can't get out of a Dominion mindset; still referring to the equivalent cards as Silver, Lab, etc.

I tried Quarriors at a pre-release show, and I thought it was really fun. I hadn't played dominion yet, though, and now when I go back and look at it, some things seem really obvious and lots of the mechanics seem awkward. Still, I'm proud to say that I correctly figured out that it was important to "chapel" your "coppers" without hearing about it somewhere else.

BTW, LCG normally refers to a CCG released in expansions rather than in booster packs, but I'm perfectly fine talking about all the deck-building games. I think it would be really cool if Dominion had (small) expansion packs every two months, like FFG's LCGs do.

Dominion LCG could have been fun and this would be quite easy to implement on Goko.
I'm pretty sure Donald has/had many more cards up his sleeve which may not have fit into a certain themed expansion or otherwise had problems.
It would be cool if there were more Potion cards for instance.

In my mind the line between deckbuilding and LCG is everyone has access to all the cards during the game in a deckbuilder, LCGs do not. So Netrunner would be the only LCG you listed, unless I'm misunderstanding some of these games (haven't played all of them).

Only played Quarriors once, but it was fun (Dominion with dice!). The theme is just a little too...silly? for my tastes, though. Which may be silly on my part.  ???

It's quite likely that I've just been misunderstanding what LCG referred to in the first place. I had been thinking that it meant Dominion-style games, where your deck changes as you play; but I see now that I was completely wrong... really it means something much more like a CCG, except with a different way of releasing new cards.
