In his last turn, my opponent:

(1) KC's a Possession
(2) Uses my Tactician, then:

— Kirian's turn (possessed by Reiss)
(Kirian reshuffles.)
Kirian draws 5 cards and gets +1 action and +1 buy from the Tactician.
Kirian plays a Laboratory.
... drawing 2 cards and getting +1 action.

(Kirian draws: an Estate, an Ironworks, a Laboratory, a Province, and an Ambassador.)

That's right, I went from 5 Provinces up to 4 Provinces down.  Well played, Reiss...

There are few ironclad strategy rules in Dominion, but surely the most ironclad of all is "Don't buy Ambassador or Masquerade in a Possession game unless you have a good plan for trashing it quickly."

...but I've accidentally forgotten once or twice, too ;) Never with quite as spectacular results as this, though, so thanks for the story!

I.  feel.  your.  pain.  Probably not as bad as yours, but this was a Level 0 player (at the time), who won after Possessing me on the last turn (albeit without King's Court and Tactician), and made a huge comeback with 8 curses, 17 coppers, and an opponent who !Possession for quite a while after that.  I was so sure I was going to win after trashing my Ambassador and being ahead (even after making a very questionable move earlier), but some days the bear gets you.

I played a game recently where I bought a Masquerade, then later my opponent gained a Possession through the Black Market.  While possessing me, he made me give him a Province with my Masquerade.  I lost by ten points, so that turn was basically a game-changer.  It's a painful way to lose a game.

Regarding Tactician in a Possession game....

I have been burned as well by my opponent possessing two of my Tactician turns in a row. This is a risker buy the more often you are likely to be possessed, i.e. if there is good deck cycling available. If both players buy Tactician in an effort to play the Possession more, then you are basically turning the game into a pure crap shoot Not that Possession games arent already but it just magnifies the swingy nature of them.

"Don't buy Ambassador or Masquerade in a Possession game unless you have a good plan for trashing it quickly."

You can always Ambassador an Ambassador to the player you're about to possess  8)
