Title: Best Randomizer App?
Post by: Beyond Awesome on August 01, 2013, 06:20:08 pm
I just got a Smart Phone, and now I want to use an app to randomize whenever I go out to play Dominion irl. What have you guys found to be the best app for this?

If you're using an Android, I recommend Dominion Shuffle.  It's just great all-around.

Seconding Dominion Shuffle. With the added bonus that if you can somehow smuggle Androminion onto your phone (it's left the Google Play store now that Goko's up, hasn't it?), you can use DS to select cards for it.

It still has that disclaimer up saying it will be removed from the store, but it looks like it is still available. I recently switched from an Android phone to Windows phone, but I still have an Android tablet and I will be holding onto it!

Also, the answer to OP's question is Dominion Shuffle. Another reason why I'm keeping an Android device around - the equivalent Windows Phone app (Dominion Picker) is much more limited and is missing a lot of important options.

Dominion Shuffle is great if you want to customize the results in some way, but if you just want a quick, full-random selector like I do 95% of the time, then I recommend Dominion Card Selector by BM Software for its ease of use.  I have both apps installed, and both work with Androminion.

http://dominionsetgenerator.com/

works great on my 2 year old android.

By far the most options and control I've seen.  And it will also bias created games toward "fun" games. (different types and values of cards, rather than being totally random)

There's a huge, old thread about this generator: http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=5801.0 (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=5801.0)

So as far as I recall, and if it hasn't been changed, this generator has heavy bias towards some cards and almost ignores some.

Here is a post from the thread where someone made statistics for this: http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=5801.msg173840#msg173840 (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=5801.msg173840#msg173840) (Please note that this is rather old and there where at least _some_ changes afterwards)
Do you really want the generator to decide for you that it isn't worth having Chancellor or Coppersmith?

Not trying to advertise my own generator too much, but it has similar options for creating a balanced set, just without the heavy bias towards some cards.
http://qbba.co.nf/dominion/ (http://qbba.co.nf/dominion/)
It always first generates a random set, then checks if any of the requirements are not met, and if necessary adds one (randomly) with the needed property.

An example of random kingdom with options: http://qbba.co.nf/dominion/kingdom.php?... (http://qbba.co.nf/dominion/kingdom.php?base=1&intr=1&seas=1&alch=1&prsp=1&crnc=1&hntr=1&dark=1&glds=1&prom=1&main=1&minmain=0&maxsets=2&setblnc=1&min5=1&min3=0&minatk=0&minpot=1&minint=1&minvlg=1&mindrw=1&minbuy=1&mintrsh=1&excl=&kdsize=10&sort=set&lang=en)
This uses only 2 sets (balanced distribution), has at least 1x 5-cost, 1x interactive, 1x 'village', 1x draw, 1x gainer/+buy, 1x trasher.

Note that obviously there will be some bias towards some cards, because if you require 5 properties, there's less chance for the ones that don't fulfill these to get in.
Also, the properties are given generously. "Ironmonger", "Herald" are villages, "Moat", "Young Witch" are draw, "Island" is trashing,
it isn't always a strong card of these groups.
For a full list of cards and their properties: http://qbba.co.nf/dominion/cardlist.php (http://qbba.co.nf/dominion/cardlist.php)

Anyways, there is always full random, which should be good enough considering Donald X. has put effort into the distribution of cards with certain properties in each set.
