Title: Guilds Art Discussion
Post by: StrongRhino on June 06, 2013, 04:22:10 pm
What do you think about the art?
I've heard a lot of hate on Baker, I personally don't think it's so bad. Journeyman seems realistic to me, and Doctor is easily my favorite. Butcher is fine, and fits the 4th theme of Guilds great.

Nothing as good as Hinterlands, nothing as awkwardly done as the work by Maura Kalusky. (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/List_of_illustrators)

Edit:  Less degrading words to the artist, I'm sure they worked hard, but their work just doesn't fit Dominion like some of the other artwork does.

The art. The art is fine. Why do people even complain about the art? They can't all be like the best artwork ever.

In all seriousness, I don't have a huge problem with it. I actually really, really like the Baker and the Butcher. The Doctor is terrible, the Journeyman is fine.

Hm, Hinterlands and Dark Ages art was great, so we are probably just used to it.
The art is not terrible, but certainly inferior to the last 2 sets so far.

Wow, my opinion is literally the exact opposite of this. Baker and Butcher are bad (not Harem bad, though), doctor is pretty cool, and journeyman is boring and I don't like the style, but neither is it very offensive.

I, too, had been getting used to some really quality art in the last couple expansion, so these previews are a bit vexing for me. But then again, I don't think any of us are here because of Dominion's art.

Butcher is fine - it's nice and creepy.  Journeyman is exactly what I've come to expect from Kurt Miller, and I can live with that.  Doctor is up to par with normal Dominion art standards.  Baker, however, looks like it was drawn in pencil by a high-schooler whose assignment was to draw someone who is afraid of bread.

I was spoiled by text mode on iso -- I literally didn't have to worry about this.

The artwork of Lynell Ingram in Dominion is terrible. I looked at her website : http://lynellsartfultrick.com/ (http://lynellsartfultrick.com/), and I think almost all her illustrations are great, but I feel that she gave all her failures to Dominion : Dame Molly, Dame Josephine, Baker and now Butcher.

Baker is probably the worst but Butcher is horrible too. I know a butcher is not the most beautiful thing in the world, but the colors are contrasts are poorly choosen. If we take, say, harem or shanty town, the colors are so much better.

The other two are not bad, but weird.

I would love to see more art from Alaynla Lemmer.

I like her illustration for Princess.

You didn't have to worry about the official art in image mode either!

I learned all the cards on Isotropic, then I got real cards and I wondered why they had the wrong art on them.

Yeah, Princess and Mandarin are more than fine.  Mandarin - that art style actually suits the card quite well.  And I have no problem with Dames Molly or Josephine.  Or even Butcher.  It's just Baker that irks me.

text mode iso also, so I don't care much.

I like Baker, reminds me on DoubleFine's Broken Age style somehow, don't know why.
Butcher looks like Kif.

So weird how tastes vary. Journeyman is the one that I can't stand. I feel l can live with the cartoony butcher and baker (even though all of the other dominion art that I really dislike is the cartoony stuff like shanty town, harem, explorer, navigator, and scout). The herald is bland. The doctor is.... suggestive. But the journeyman - there are no words -

The expansion is great and the art is poor. Poor when compared to better art that is; it's moderate when compared to art that's just as poor.

We should conquer other expansions so we can have a wider variety of trees.

And then build a life-size statue out of baklava.

Which we will use to control all the rivers!

I would like to say I have a soft spot for Butcher but that is a bit macabre.

Am i the only one who got used to Harem that much that he actually doesn't mind it anymore? Also i find Butcher even worse than Baker, and Baker is awful.

I don't mind it when I'm playing actually. I can totally get used to anything, and the card as a whole has a nice color scheme. But if I look at it objectively and on its own, ok yeah it is terrible.

Baker is weird, but not bad...butcher is 100% A-OK in my book.

I don't understand the hate on Journeyman...it may be a bit generic, but I don't see anything objectionable.

Butcher is fine - it's nice and creepy.

Creepy, that butcher, really?

Baker and Butcher are too cartoony and silly, journeman sucks cuz it's just such a boring picture, Herald is nothing special, doctor is fine.

I mean, it's dominion, with few exception it always had okish but not great art.

Y'know, it's funny how precedent changes perception. If Shanty Town and Harem didn't have such awful art, I'd probably think Baker and Butcher felt really out of place. Since they do exist, I just think, "Hey, this cartoony Dominion art is way better than Maura Kalusky's!"

Hum... I think baker and butcher are better than shanty town, but they are worse than Harem and Navigator.

I was initially shocked by Baker, but after seeing it a dozen of times, it's not that awful. Butcher is still bad, no matter how many times I take a look at it. I like Herald's art a lot for some reason.

This has always been my problem with art - it is too..... artistic.  The same piece can really appeal to one person and not to another with no way to quantify or objectively judge.  ;)
