Title: IsoDom 2 Invitational Sign-Up Closed
Post by: Mean Mr Mustard on September 20, 2011, 03:06:18 pm
Thanks for joining up!  The match-ups will be posted shortly!

Next up, 32 player tourney.  Same basic format, with the following changes-

32 players - anyone who is interested, please sign up.  The registration period will end on Friday, October 28.  If there are not 32 players signed up at that point I will extend until enough register or it proves futile, at which time it will drop back to a 16 player tourney.  Again, I ask that anyone who signs up please do so only if you are sure that you will be able to finish your matches.  If more than 32 people register, I will take into account forum participation, the number of games played on Isotropic and finally win average.  My only goal is to have a successful, competitive tourney.  All participants from the last tourney get an automatic entry if you would like to play again.

There will be 8 divisions of four players randomly seeded by ladder position, like before.

Players may play any format that they can agree upon so long as the games are randomly generated.  First player to win four matches will move on.  Ties are not considered a win or a loss for anyone.

I think the last tourney went swimmingly, but I am open to suggestion on any format changes, but the final decision on this matter will be mine to make.  But please, if you have any ideas on how to make the tourney better, please make it in the next two days and I promise to consider all suggestions seriously..

I am hoping that some of you big time posters will play.  Rob, Geronimoo, Tinas, Guided, WW, Tim, HME, DG, ack, chaosR, you lot.  Put your reps on the line!

The only negative thing I've said about this tournament is that I disagree with the default rules it is using and therefore I do not wish to take part. That does not exclude me from further discussion about the tournament or related matters. That does not mean that I think the tournament's host or any of its participants should die a horrible death for being involved. All it means is that I disagree with the default rules being used for the tournament, and therefore I do not wish to take part. If you have any personal issues with me, I would encourage you to take them up with me and/or the forum admins in private.

Nah, the biggest lead I had was 10 points, still within a single province difference.  Always very close, I thought. (Edit) Ah, matchscore-wise, nvm, thought you meant points in each game.

Was definitely fun, had to be careful each turn.

Just for you, I went 0 and 3 with barsooma.  So Barsooma won, pooka eliminated.  Unfortunately, we forgot the game logs but barsooma is going to post them when they come up in Council room.  We did check all 3 boxes for the game conditions.

Overview, game 1 was a bridge/village engine by Barsooma, game 2 was a Talisman driven pile out I could have taken but I saw it too late, and game 3 was a race between my badly executed chancellor/stash stack vs. something I don't know how to describe except it had hunting party, conspirator and council room.  Must have had a + buy in there somewhere.  I learned a lot both preparing and playing,

Barsooma dropped some bombs on pooka, including this gem:

#1 barsooma: 36 points (4 Provinces and 4 Duchies); 13 turns
          opening: Silver / Bridge
          [31 cards] 5 Bridges, 4 Villages, 3 Apprentices, 2 Havens, 1 Tactician, 6 Coppers, 1 Silver, 1 Gold, 4 Duchies, 4 Provinces

Excellent play!  Thank you pooka for playing.

Ouch pooka, a couple of brutal games in there, Barsooma demonstrating two very efficient engines in the first and third games. Hope it wasn't discouraging. You were right - second game Duchy/Spy/Spy on Turn 14 would have won it for you. Just curious though - why were you going second in the 2nd game?

(Interesting game that MMM pointed out though - on Barsooma's turn 5, I would have bought Tactician instead of a 2nd Apprentice. In fact I'm not sure whether I would even have bought Tactician on Turn 4...)

MMM, just to be fair, I think you ought to know my training regimen includes daily runs up the front steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. This has been a big sacrifice -- I live in Boston so the commute is killing me -- but well worth it, psychologically speaking.

This is a Rocky joke for anybody who...doesn't like Rocky.

So after this round will the two players left in each division play each other? If that's the case, would it be too early for ehunt and I to play if we happen to find ourselves on Isotropic at the same time, or should I just be patient and wait for the first round to actually conclude? :)
Title: Re: IsoDom Tourney Match-Ups and Results
Post by: pooka on September 23, 2011, 04:17:38 pm
@ Anon, We started a game with incorrect parameters before that.

I did some really weird things, like I totally would have gone Bridge/Village in the first game except Barsooma wasn't buying Villages at the start, and that confused me so I was trying to follow what he did.  Which is a great way to come in second.  :)

Trouble is, I wasn't watching closely.  I don't consistently read every turn the other player makes, and I knew I needed to in order to not completely embarass myself.

"Follow the leader" happened again in the third game, when, having my stash stack, I failed to buy more chancellors and instead started flailing about for cards that would cycle my deck.  After 3 or 4 turns of that I realized I just needed Chancellors but of course it was too late.

Post by: Davio on September 23, 2011, 04:52:41 pm
I played TheParty a couple of minutes ago and we both started the first game with incorrect parameters.
We both accepted the result however and I ended up beating him 3-0.

He was a good sport, even though I was lucky (and he was unlucky) enough in a couple of spots and he made some mistakes which were likely caused by brainfuzziness. He admitted to at least one misclick in the 3rd game and one miscount in the 2nd game where we used the point counter.

But it's 22:50 here, so if anybody should be complaining about having a hard time concentrating, it should be me, not the guy for who it's only 15:00.  ;D

greatexpectations and I just finished.  I forgot to save the game logs, but I'll post the council room ones tomorrow.  It ended up going 4 games.  First one was a familiar game, expectations got unlucky and missed the first familiar purchase.  Second one was a tactician game with hamlet and a few other virtual money cards.  I think they were merchant ship, jester and cutpurse.  Third one was was a montebank type game.  Last one was an island/BM type of game.

Yep it was a close match.. overall I feel like CMiner outplayed me, the first game which he won was the only blowout, where I ignored vineyards far too long.
Will edit in the logs once councilroom updates.

ehunt, I'm curious: in Game 2 against michaeljb (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201109/29/game-20110929-173714-2cecaacc.html), what was your thought process on skipping Mountebank? I usually assume that once Mountebank is on the board I would have to get one or two, so am interested in hearing cases and circumstances under which one could forgo Mountebank (even though it wasn't successful here).
Title: Re: IsoDom Tourney Round 2 Match-Ups and Results
Post by: ehunt on October 01, 2011, 02:23:37 pm
I was thinking I wanted to lose :-).

Actually, what I was thinking was that I could enjoy a megaforge turn before the mountebank could do too much damage; however, caravan is too weak at drawing to facilitate a sufficiently early megaforge turn to counter something as painful to the deck as mountebank, and so this was just foolish.

My gut is that this approach is definitely right if you replace mountebank with sea hag and caravan with laboratory, sometimes right if you replace mountebank with sea hag but leave caravan alone, and definitely wrong in the game I played it (michaeljb's draws aren't very lucky at all). Maybe some simulation data would be helpful - just now, I searched councilroom records for every time I've tried to pull this and it seems to come down against me a lot.

The only one card that often makes mega-forge work for me without other help, I've found, is tactician. Of course, any kind of big engine is also good.

ehunt, I'm curious: in Game 2 against michaeljb (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201109/29/game-20110929-173714-2cecaacc.html), what was your thought process on skipping Mountebank? I usually assume that once Mountebank is on the board I would have to get one or two, so am interested in hearing cases and circumstances under which one could forgo Mountebank (even though it wasn't successful here).

Mountebank is so rarely skippable.  Two cards that can make skipping Mountebank a good idea are Sea Hag and Counting House, and oh look this sample game has both of 'em!

The opening buy of Fortune Teller probably did not help you at all; other than the lucky turn where you managed to discard both mountebanks at once, it just provided free deck cycling which let him get to his mountebanks faster.

In a battle that went 2-2 I had a tough fifth match against Boloni.  He played very well but I eked out the win.  Thanks so much for playing Boloni.

I'll update the results section with the games when I have time, hopefully this evening.

Well done, shark_bait.

To be honest, my heart wasn't in it and I was pretty tired from my first football match in months (real fans refuse to call it soccer and a sport in which you mostly use your hands shouldn't be called football!). No excuses though, 'cause shark_bait was the better player.

I took some chances in some games, but they didn't go my way.

Good luck during the rest of the tourney, all of you.

Congrats to shark_bait, those were some fun games. If I could have the Ambassador one back I might pick up an early Potion to go for Alchemists to more consistently draw the Ambassadors, but I suspect (as I did at the beginning of the game) it might be too slow to work.

Well played, and good luck in the finals :)

Actually, if you look at that ambassador game there's a rather mighty alchemist deck just asking to be built. You could probably give away a five province lead and still win.

I was outplayed in all of the matches, especially in one that Barsooma put together an inspired makeshift Masq/KC pin that had me beat even with a four province lead.  I will post the logs in the morning.

Any news about the finals yet? Just to let you know that there are people following this. I would like to see/take part in more tournaments. Maybe a little modified with a group stage or so, but it was fun to play and follow this, even though I lost in the first round.

Good luck shark bait and barsooma for the finals!

Great, at least I lost to the winner. :)

That last game though, seems you got a bit lucky and should have gotten a lot more terminal collision, shark! In fact, your first terminal collision was in turn 14 when you used a Vault to get some use out of them!

Yeah... things definitely worked in my favor that last game.  I was able to play my militias almost every turn throughout the middle of the game.  I had some help from the villages, but I probably wouldn't get that lucky if I played that same game again.

Congrats to both of you for making the finals and thanks for finishing up a well organised tournament!

It seems that this format was of interest for players on Isotropic. I once again encourage more tournaments and I am willing to help with organisation (contacting players, making draws etc.) if needed and wanted.

Sorry to badger, but shouldn't you make a new post now that it is a new tournament. I was very confused to read all the comments about a tournament that had already occurred. I noticed this when you would update your last tournament using the same thread. Just my two cents, but please consider.

Also, do you mean 32 player tournament? Your last was 16 and you said 8 divisions of 4 teams...

How get the divisions organized? Do they depend on time zones we're living in? Or is it purely randomized?

If it's like last time, players get seeded by Isotropic rank before groups are made and then you get split up to keep the high seeds apart in the early rounds.

Assuming it's like the last one, you will have a week to get your match in.  You and your opponent will find a time that works for both of you.  So basically, you can play them whenever.

That would be level 20, not rank 20 :)

I guess I'm in. I would have been in before, it's just the issue is that you're so stringent on making the games, it's sorta spooky. Even though I can definitely make the time. It's just, my internet will drop once in a blue moon, and has done twice in the past, oh say 4 months. Including when you posted this. But I guess I can probably hop to a public network 5-10 minutes away without too much problem.
So I'm in.
