Title: Magic The Gathering Draft
Post by: TheMunch on February 14, 2013, 06:24:07 pm
Hey, f.ds!

I am here to gauge interest in running some kind of M:TG Draft with some of you guys.  I know that there are a few people that have expressed interest in Magic at one point or another.  I recently got Shraeye interested when I dragged him with me to the Gatecrash Prerelease.

So is this something that people would be interested in?  Can we get 8 to do a booster draft?  Obviously it would be just for fun, and we could use a program like Cockatrice to play matches.

In List:

1.  TheMunch
2.  Shraeye
3.  Axxle
4.  Insomniac
5.  Grujah
6.  Bozzball

/in  I'm all for this! Most recently drafted RTR made a somewhat janky Bant bounce/detain/populate deck that took me to the win!

I would love to draft Gatecrash.  I also did some drafting of Return to Ravnica on MTGO but have been having significantly more fun drafting GTC.

In. I agree, gtc is more fun to draft than rtr, but i'd do older sets too, i hear zendikar, timespiral and rise of eldrazi are superfun. I guess we can play the decks out on mws or something like that?

One of my favorite drafts was a 6 man where everyone picked 3 different packs that were mutually exclusive, so no one had the a card from the same expansion.  Luckily goblins are everywhere and I got passed a goblin recruiter so I just drafted goblin tribal and smashed faces.  Woo!

Actually, anyone want to nostalgia it up with original Ravnica? Not sure how good that draft format was though.  I'm fine with anything really (if you can tell from my anecdote)

TheMunch
Insomniac
Axxle

I'd cube too if we find a good one.

But I think for the first game GTC is quite good starting point - people know it, and is actually a fun draft format.

I agree that GTC is a good place to start.  I know other forums and such have run drafts so I know its possible, but I need to figure out how to facilitate the passing of the packs, whether a program can handle this or what.  I normally play games through Cockatrice.  It is the easiest to setup with a better game interface than MWS, but it does have a slightly worse deck building interface (namely I wish it had a way to directly move cards between MB and SB in the deck building screen; you can SB in match though and that works incredibly well... why they cant make something similar work for the deckbuilding interface is beyond me)

http://tappedout.net/ has a drafting system, it's kind of buggy though.

I've introduced quite a few of my friends to magic through drafting, I think it'll be fine!  Just remember: B.R.E.A.D.  Bombs, Removal, Evasive/Efficient, Aggressive/Card Advantage, Dregs.  We'll give you more tips on drafting if you need it.

Are people free this weekend?

Wait, before signing up - will the games themselves be asynchronous? Not sure I have time for synchronous internet play at the moment.

Might be in. I'm absolutely terrible at the game, and haven't been keeping up with the recent sets, but I haven't played in a couple years and I kind of want to.

Actually did 2 8-man drafts in the weekend, lost in semi-finals both times, also realized I suck badly at GTC.

Did rip foil Reckoner though :P.

Haven't played myself for ages. Not /in, just some observations:

Ravnica sounds like it means "likeness" in some Slavic language.
I have mentioned elsewhere that M:tG has withstood power creep, but I didn't appreciate the dimension of this. I just saw that there's a Pegasus in Ravnica at the mana cost as venerable Mesa Pegasus. Only without banding. Yeah I know banding is outlawed for ages.

Actually, a Croat suggested the name and theme, IIRC. In Serbian, and Croatian (which are more-less the same) it means "Plains".

I assume you are talking about 1/3 Pegasus for 2, which is quite bad actually, it is a bit stronger Storm Crow, and it rarely kills anything, it is mostly a blocker or a very slow clock.. ugh.
And powercreep is BS, imho. I am a very new player, but started playing competitively from the start. True, with stuff like Baneslayer Angel and Thundermaw Hellkite creature P/T per CC did go up quite a bit, but from what I see, in "old days" there was a great imbalance with ton of crap cards on one side, and ridiculously overpowered cards on other, while today you have a much more balanced curve.

Bottom line, just look at legacy/vintage staples and compare the number of old and new cards, and you'll see that old ones are dominating those formats.

ok, disregard my prev comment, thought it was a 1/1 flyer. 1/3 seems not half bad to me.
Title: Re: Magic The Gathering Draft
Post by: Titandrake on February 19, 2013, 01:44:28 pm
From my understanding, what the game designers felt was wrong about older Magic was that creatures were too weak for how fragile they were. Play a spell, you have to counter it or let it happen. Play a creature, you can counter it, or kill it with your own spell, or combat damage, etc.

So, they made creatures stronger and spells weaker. The part I don't really agree with is that they also made removal stronger. There's a developing arms race between creatures and removal. Creatures die more easily, but they often have some benefit on death (Wurmcoil Engine I'm looking at you.)

I think they're aware of this though, and they probably know what they're doing.

If this is happening this weekend I could probably be in. I'm not really great a MTG, haven't really played since Ursa's Legacy, but I can still read on cards. ;) And I do play The Spoils, which is really similiar.

Definitely draft in real time, otherwise it'd take way too long.  Don't care either way when games are played though.

Magic Workstation is old, but still up. I think the only way to make draft work is to have one person (who isn't playing) generate the boosters and handle picks, because I don't know of any freeware program that has drafting implemented. Or you could look at http://tappedout.net/mtg-draft-simulator/, which I found by Googling.

I'm busy this whole week and part of next week, so I can't join.

We can have each player generate one booster each and then pass it around via pm or something. and then do the same for the second and third boosters.
I've used tapped out, but it's unforgiving about disconnects and it tends to freeze up for me.

So the current list is only 7 players

TheMunch (at forum time)
shraeye (at forum time)
Lekkit (FT+6)
Axxle (FT-3)
Insomniac (FT-3)
Grujah (FT+6)
axxle's bro (presumably same timezone as Axxle?)

Possible 8th persons:
bozzball--he's in Barcelona until Mar 6th.  And he tried to /out once but we left him on the list)
Glooble--wanted in, then out because he was busy before
michealjb (FT-2)--said he's new but interested.  Still interested?
TitanDrake (FT-3)--I think you said you were interested too, but busy until sometime next week, yeah?

What I'm saying is we should get a solid 8 people and try to kick this off sometime this weekend.

axxle's bro (presumably same timezone as Axxle?)

Yeah, we're both in FT-3.  I probably wouldn't want to start any earlier than 8am our time (11 forum time), I'll ask my brother what he prefers.

I'm pretty flexible as long as I don't have a long work day the next day.

I don't have any experience with MWS, but I guess it can't be too hard to learn, right? Otherwise, I've mentioned OCTGN before. I know the program and it's really neat. I think there is MTG support.

It easier for me to start late than early, I am usually up till very late hours. Not a healthy habit.

That is, if I am not out at the time. I am usually out a night or two during weekends, but still, cant draft after/before that for sure!
