Title: Could I Have Won?
Post by: Dingan on August 03, 2016, 01:34:33 pm
Simple question: Could I have guaranteed a win on this turn?  My opponent went first, so I could also tie it.  I realize I didn't have the greatest luck during this turn leading up to this point (would have liked to draw more things with my early Scrying Pools).  But regardless, here I was.  Note that my Journey Token is face up.  Basically, my brain started to hurt trying to figure out how to win and I was taking a lot of time, so I just said f it and did something and hoped to draw everything on my last Scrying Pool play, which sadly it drew neither the Inn nor the Artificer.  I was hoping to mill 3 Provinces with Remodel, buy 1, and also grab a Duchy and an Estate with my Artificers.  Or something like that.  Can't really remember my exact thought process, or if it even made any sense.  One cool trick though is that gaining a Duchy with Artificer, and then picking up a Duchess, provides another thing for Scrying Pool to draw, and therefore could give other Artificers more things to discard.  But I never actually utilized this.

Play Remodel, Province --> Province.
Play Artificer, drawing Province. Discard 2 Remodels, Inn, Giant, gain Remodel.
Play Pool, draw all cards.
Play Remodel, Province--> Province.
Play Artificer, drawing Province. Discard 2 Copper to gain Estate.
Play Remodel, Province--> Province.
Play Inn, discard Estate and Province if possible (actually, this is optional).
Play Remodel, Giant --> Duchy.
Play Duchess.
Play at least 2 remaining Copper and Buy last Province.

This reminds me of the M:TG puzzles in some gaming magazine back in the 90s  (was it Wizard?*), where they would show you a board in the middle of some complex game and you'd have to figure out how to win (or achieve some other goal) from that point.

Now that you can do quite a few complicated tricks in Dominion, the same type of thing could be done.

*Edit: Searching online some, I think it was probably The Duelist magazine.

Well, that, or the chess, checkers and bridge puzzles you always see in the newspaper.

Right, exactly.  The Magic ones were kind of a cool esoteric version of that.
