Title: A traveler that gets worse
Post by: ThetaSigma12 on March 02, 2016, 05:15:35 pm
Crown-5
Worth 4 coins
When you discard this from play you must exchange it for a jewel

Jewel-4*
Worth 3 coins
When you discard this from play you must exchange it for a heirloom

Heirloom-3*
Worth 2 coins
When you discard this from play you must exchange it for a curio

Curio-2*
Worth 1 coin
When you discard this from play you must exchange it for a trinket

Trinket-1*
Worth 0 coins
When you discard this from play you may trash it

Basically a traveler that gets worse instead of better. Haven't play tested yet because I don't think I have enough blanks. What do you think?

Two things.

First, because exchanging these is mandatory, I think it's way better to have it happen right when you play them. Because they're Treasures, you don't really have to worry about exchanging them and then playing the new card on the same turn. I mean it can happen with Venture, etc., but that's rare enough. Or maybe they should be set aside, then exchanged during Clean-up, to make it easier to track how much $ you have, but also easier to remember not to discard them.

Second, each card should be interesting. The concept of "worsening Treasure" by itself isn't cool enough to be worth 10 cards, let alone 30 or so.

That depicts a life of a once noble man who became a gambler and an alcoholic and is now staring in his own grave lonely winter nights, dirty and unwanted.

You could implement a similar idea with mats and tokens.  +X, then -y for each token on the mat, to a minimum of 0.  If there are X tokens on the mat, you may trash this (and remove all tokens from the mat?).  If not, place a token on the mat.

It's not exactly the same because the value is shared among all of them.

I’m a bit afraid it gets used the first time and then trashed.
Maybe make it more exciting at the beginning and add an on-trash ability that gets worse too.

I made a degenerate traveler in the RBCI thread, because that's where it (most likely) belongs. Here's the link: http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=114.msg521130#msg521130

What an excellent procession target!

You mean counterfeit? I understand the confusion, I never specifed the type. I am considering changing the wording to:
XXX
You may exchange this for Y, if you do +4/3/2/1 coins.

I am also considering giving it more interesting abilities instead of normal coins.

The concept itself sounds fun, but if you consider it, all of them are spoils that downgrade their worth each turn they get played. Some simple effects might buff them a litle, for example: +buy, you may put a card from your hand on top of your deck, you may trash a card from hand (and/or play).

Perpetual +Buy (Princed Ruined Market will do), 5 Crowns, buy Mandarin + Colony each turn. :)
