Title: 2015/2016 Card Design Contest?
Post by: mith on November 04, 2015, 01:31:38 pm
Hi all, I was wondering if there would be interest in holding another one of these. I would be happy to organize the voting.

If you're interested, please post here! Also, if you have any ideas for a theme, feel free to suggest one - if this ends up happening, I'll set up a poll among the top suggestions.

What is this?

The idea is that people submit card ideas and then we vote on which ones are the best. Usually there are several rounds of this, each with its own restrictions. I ran the last such contest, with each round based on a specific expansion—make a card for Intrigue, make a card for Prosperity, etc. I burnt out partway through (sorry, everybody!), but we did get through one contest for each expansion. Before that there was another contest where each round had a mechanical theme—make a trasher, make a village, etc. This would be the third such contest here on f.DS.

Anyway, I would probably participate, at least in some of the rounds. It's a fun exercise, but it doesn't tend to actually produce good cards because there's no process for playtesting and refining them.

Sounds like fun! I would watch it but probably not submit anything.

Did we actually get through one contest for every expansion?  I thought we missed out on some.  At the least, there were some contests that didn't actually conclude.

I'd be interested in finishing off that round of contests.

I'm interested, although I'd suggest spending a couple of months preparing and then make it a 2016 contest, because you may find it hard to squeeze enough rounds into the remainder of this year.

Some possibilities for themes, if you don't want to repeat what the last two contests did (some of these are less likely to produce interesting results, I admit):

* Everyone designs based on a card name, or a short list of names
* Find a random piece of public domain art, everyone designs a card that could use that art
* Get people to sign up, then give each person a different design brief with the aim of making a single set
* Pair contestants up (possibly one experienced player and one relative newbie) and do any of the possible themes
* Have some kind of secondary contest to actually playtest the cards somehow

I'm interested.  :)
I suggest having one cathegory "cards that you could playtest on Goko using house rules", it is really limiting the design space but it gives the cards a much much better shot at getting some playtesting.
Due to lack of other examples, I have to link to my own fan card, Holy Cow (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=13134.msg487215#msg487215). As Ghacob pointed out there, you can agree before the game to treat Pawns as Holy Cows.
I don't know if that's something that many people would like to try, though.

Yeah, there was never a final poll on three of them. We also now have Adventures released, so maybe finishing those off and doing a new one for Adventures and maybe some further treasure-chest appropriate themes (Promos; cross-set mechanics; etc.) would be interesting.

I'm interested, although I'd suggest spending a couple of months preparing and then make it a 2016 contest, because you may find it hard to squeeze enough rounds into the remainder of this year.

These could be fun, yeah.

* Get people to sign up, then give each person a different design brief with the aim of making a single set

This would probably be too restrictive and not interactive.

Quote
* Pair contestants up (possibly one experienced player and one relative newbie) and do any of the possible themes

I don't know that something like this would need to be an official part of the contest. Participants could of course pair up on their own, whatever we end up doing.

Quote
* Have some kind of secondary contest to actually playtest the cards somehow

This would definitely be a plus. Maybe this could be done PBF style (probably too slow; I don't guess you would need a mod though, honor system for shuffling should be fine since we're trying to playtest).

One thought I had related to this is that the approval voting may be a bit restrictive in the sense that sometimes really interesting ideas are submitted which just aren't full fleshed out/balanced. Perhaps some system for selecting both a "best card as-is" and a "most interesting concept", where the concept card(s) could be tweaked by the group with a second poll for picking the best tweaked card.

Another possibility for a theme: promo cards based (mechanically or flavor) on other games (like Governor and Walled Village).

Re: Treasure Chest

Counting randomizers but not Prizes, we would have 147 cards, so we could pick 3 Prizes to include. Since the goal was a 150 card set (which could be proxies with an actual small set), I would propose continuing with a separate second treasure set. Possible composition:

Adventures (2)
Promo (2)
Base (1) - could be a more restrictive "Vanilla" card challenge, perhaps.
"First Set" (1) - DXV's original first expansion; overlaps with Intrigue, so perhaps specifically emphasizing the one-shot and choose-one elements, since the top two last time were both Victory cards.
"Second Set" (1) - DXV's original second expansion; combined elements of Seaside and Hinterlands.
Spendy (1) - Combined elements of Prosperity and Guilds?
Alchemy + Cornucopia (1) - Since these were combined at some point.
War (2) - Player interaction. May overlap with Dark Ages?
Prophecy (2) - Things that care about top of deck.
Events (?) - To fill out the set.

I know Alchemy didn't gt finished. I remember it so well because it was the first in which i had a shot at winning :P
Edit: I think LastFootnote might refer to each contest having had at least one voting round.

Either way, i might participate, but no promise.

If i hear anotter pun i'm going to leave.

Also, contest ideas:
Make a card named "Tailor".
Make a card with at most 16 words.
Make a card with only one type.
Make a reaction.
Make an Event.
Make a card that you can use a limited number of times.

Here are my ideas

Make a card with an existing name that is different such as Wharf, but it does something different like gives coin instead of draw.

Or, modify an existing card.

Make a card that can only work on online Dominion

Make a card that does something that has never been done before in Dominion

I'd say it looks tailor-made to win.

Haven't forgotten about this, just waiting til BGG.con is passed before following up on it. If you have any further suggestions for possible contests, post them here! I'll run a poll to pick among the suggestions.

Make a silly card (not silly as in really-bad-card-ideas-bad, a card that works but is not serious, like those silly magic expansions, or maybe somewhat less silly and more fun, please).
Make an Event (on my phone, can't easily check whether this has been proposed already)

Like a card you tear into pieces after you play it?

Dominion Legacy should definitely be a thing.

If I were to participate in a contest, would I have to make up brand new cards or can I use my own custom cards that I've previously created?

Sure. We will probably stick with the rule from the last contest:

Quote
You may submit cards that have been previously posted here in this forum, including those that have been refined by the community as a whole, provided you can still claim that the central conceit of the card -- and the majority of its final version -- is yours.
