Gamestate: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1BSljLJc15jmUx3bo91OpkgiN3MbgsjUGxtWYBFcfjp8/edit?usp=sharing
Sorry for the wait! If you're not sure what this is, check out the previous game thread (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=12422.0). Currently XP, ADK and Hydrad are signed up to play this game. If anyone else is interested, it's not too late to join this, or I can run concurrent games.
The characters and alignments are rolled, and I hope to start pretty soon, hopefully by early next week. In the meantime I'll reveal a couple of the characters.
I thought it would be good to include Assassin and Doctor in this game, since they were in the previous game and barely used, but they've both changed significantly since then. The other 7 characters have been randomly selected from the 30ish characters I'm currently working on. All 9 characters have 5 Good Action/Evil Alignment cards and 5 Evil Action/Good Alignment cards. Here they are in their current forms (the artwork is just googled clipart):

FAQ: The Doctor does not stop characters from taking damage, he allows them to take more than 4 damage without dying. A character only dies when they are attacked and then have more than 4 damage, they do not die automatically when they have more than 4 damage and are no longer protected.

FAQ: If Player 1 gets coins from a Good Researcher card while Player 2 and Player 3 both have Evil Researcher cards in play, only Player 2 gets the coins, since his Evil Researcher card triggers first. When Player 3's triggers, he tries to take the coins from Player 1 but can't because they are already gone, and doesn't take them from Player 2 because he got them from an Evil Researcher card, not a Good one.

Yeah it's new and yeah I haven't given the new rules yet.

Yeah it's new and yeah I haven't given the new rules yet.
ah fair
-
From the doctor's expression the prognosis doesn't look good.
-
Two more characters for your perusal. I'll hopefully have time to start by Wednesday.
-
Most All of the cards are up. I'm still working on the full new rules, but for now I'll list the changes.
Coins
These are coin tokens that players can earn and spend. Players do not start the game with any coins.
When a card says +$x, that means take x coin tokens.
When a card says -$x, that means you must pay x coin tokens. If you cannot afford to, you pay nothing the card is immediately discarded for no more effect.
Phases
Play Phase: You may choose to play a card from your play area. You are not required to. To play a card, attack with it and then follow any PLAY instructions.
Clean Up Phase: If you did not play any cards in your Play Phase, +$1 and you must discard a card from your play area if possible. Otherwise, for each card you did play, you must do one of the following:
1. Score the card.
2. Sell the card - discard it and get +$x equal to the score value of the card.
3. Discard the card to buy another card - choose a card in the discard area, and pay coins equal to the card's score value to put the card in your score area.
Summon phase: summon a card from your hand.
Draw phase: you may pay $5 per card currently in your hand. If you do, draw 2 cards. Otherwise, draw 1 card.
Dead Cards
When you choose to play a card of a dead character, you must pay $1. If you can't, you discard the card for no effect. If you do, attack with that card. You may then pay another $1 to follow the PLAY effects of the card. During your clean up phase, for each dead card you played that turn, you may pay $1 to score it. If you don't, discard it. You may not sell dead cards, nor may you use them to buy cards.
If you pay for PLAY effects of a dead card, you also get IN PLAY effects etc. If a card has an IN PLAY effect that would trigger before you play it, you may at any time that it would trigger put $2 from your coin supply on the card. When you play the card, this $2 counts towards playing the card (attacking) and getting PLAY effects.
Victory Tokens
When you kill a Good/Evil character, you get an Evil/Good Victory Token. At the end of the game, each Evil/Good Victory Token is worth 1 point if Evil/Good wins and -1 point if Good/Evil wins (respectively).
Neutral characters
At the end of the game, if a character has an equal number of Good and Evil Alignment cards, they are on the Neutral Team. Only one of the Good, Evil and Neutral Team can win; the other two lose.
At the end of the game, the Neutral Team wins if one of the following is true:
1. There are strictly more living characters on the Neutral Team than any other Team. On a tie with another Team, the other Team wins.
2. Good and Evil have the same number of living characters AND the same number of dead characters.
Purely Good/Evil
For a character to be Purely Good/Evil, they need 3 Alignment cards of that Team. 2 is not enough, even without any opposing Alignment cards.
SCORE AREA Effects
Only 1 card of each pile in your score area is active - the card most recently put there. You only get SCORE AREA effects for active cards. Kind of works like Innovation. SCORE AREA effects only take place while the relevant character is alive.
-
The game has begun!
Each player must choose their first card to summon by replying to the PM I sent you.
A reminder that the first player will be the player with the highest ranked card no other player has with Good Planner Action > Good Assassin Action > ... > Good Spy Action > Evil Planner Action > Evil Assassin Action > ... Evil Spy Action
-
2 reminders:
1. It will not be surprising if I make a mistake along the way. I'll do my best but please be gracious if I do.
2. This is playtesting. In fact, most of the cards you'll be using have not been playtested at all. If you have anything at all to say negatively about the game, cards etc, please feel very free to do so, but be nice. :)
-
Added a clarification that SCORE AREA effects only take place while the relevant character is alive.
Waiting for one more PM.

Then choose a card from your hand to summon.
Then you will draw a card.

Hydrad plays a Good Researcher Action, attacking the Researcher for 1 damage.
Hydrad scores the Good Researcher Action.

Rules Clarification: If a card says -$x and you can't pay the x, you discard the card immediately for no more effect.
-
The picture is making it really hard for me to understand the game state. If it's convenient, could you go back to the previous way?
Spy: look at two different cards of the queen, attack the queen.
Summon good doctor.
-
The picture is making it really hard for me to understand the game state. If it's convenient, could you go back to the previous way?
I'm happy to if that would be better. Hydrad and ADK, do you have an opinion? Would simply making it smaller help?
-
Yeah it's a little big now.
-
Yeah it's a little big now.
So you'd rather smaller pictures or go back to text?
-
I agree it's pretty big but I thought the benefit of not having to refer to the OP to see what cards do would outweigh the inconvenience. If you'd rather refer to the OP that's fine.
-
Is there a way you can make the pictures smaller?
-
I'm sure I can manage that. Not right now though.
-
Play Planner, attack the Historian. I'll wait to see what I draw before I choose who to summon.
-
Hey guys, sorry for the wait. I've decided to do the gamestate in a spreadsheet if everyone's happy with that. Do you still want me to send you your hands as pictures?
-
Spy: look at two different cards of the queen, attack the queen.
Summon good doctor.
When Spying, you generally need to specify which 2 cards you are looking at. By default, I'll assume it's the top 2 (1 and 2).
Also, you need to specify what you're doing with the card you just played. By default, I'll assume you're scoring it, as opposed to selling it or discarding it to buy a discarded card.
-
Also, a note on active cards.
When multiple cards of the same character are in a player's score area or the discard area, only the most recently placed one is active. If something allows you to move a card from there, only the active one can be moved. As mentioned previously, SCORE AREA effects only occur from active cards.
In the spreadsheet (which yes I haven't linked yet), active cards are bolded and underlined.
-
Rules Clarification: If a card says -$x immediately after PLAY, it has an implicit MANDATORY before that part. ie if you for example play a Queen Action while the Queen is dead you can't just choose to attack with it and score and get around paying for it.
New rule: If a card says -$x and you can't pay the x, you discard the card immediately for no more effect.

I hate to give advice, but I suggest you read the Phases section.
So, I don't want to score since I think it'll give me negative points, and I don't want to use its ability because I'm on the good side now.
Is there something I'm missing?

Phases
Play Phase: You may choose to play a card from your play area. You are not required to. To play a card, attack with it and then follow any PLAY instructions.
Clean Up Phase: If you did not play any cards in your Play Phase, +$1 and you must discard a card from your play area if possible.

-
Is there a reason I'm not getting money from my good researcher?
It's not active.
-
SCORE AREA Effects
Only 1 card of each pile in your score area is active - the card most recently put there. You only get SCORE AREA effects for active cards. Kind of works like Innovation. SCORE AREA effects only take place while the relevant character is alive.
-
Ok.
Pay $1 to Play Good Assassin, looking at the Researcher's top Alignment card.
-
It costs you $2 to do that:
-
Alright, I'll pay the $2.

-
play: good researcher
score: good researcher
summon: good prophet.
(since good researcher is dead I forget what I can do... I want to score at least)
Even if the Researcher was alive, playing it would result in discarding it immediately after attacking, since you can't afford to pay the $5 necessary (since you have 5 Researcher cards in your score area). Also, since it's dead, it would cost an additional $2 to both play and score the card.
Basically you have two options. Discard the card, or discard the card for $1.
-
oh sadness. well i guess if I can't even score it just discard for 1$
-
oh sadness. well i guess if I can't even score it just discard for 1$
For the record, Researcher cards are no longer active, so you wouldn't be getting any more $ even if you could score it.

In other news, I want to bring this to play at the local board game club. Do you have a Print n Play document?
You just made my day. :D
Um, not really. I have the prototype versions of the cards on gamecrafter (just with the googled clipart), so it is possible to have proper cards (physically speaking) sent to you. Otherwise, I'm sure I can sort out some kind of printable document. Either would take at least a few days for me to sort out.
-
Play spy, look at the researcher's unrevealed alignment cards, summon good historian.
The Researcher has no unrevealed Alignment cards. Also, the only Neighbour the Spy has is the Psychologist. Also, it'll cost you $2 to attack and use the Spy ability, plus $1 if you want to score it.

Yeah - I'd be willing to pay a reasonable amount to get the cards sent to me via game crafter - the people at the club were somewhat dubious, but I think having "real" cards will make people take it more seriously.

Would you be happy to have prototype cards (ie, what you see in the OP etc)? If you did pay for them, it would only be to cover costs.
PS. You have more to do on your turn.

It costs $1 to attack. If you attack, you can also pay $1 to get the card effects and/or $1 to score the card.
-
oh so since I think i only have 1 dollar i can't score since it would take at least 2 $?
if thats the case then just sell the card
-
score: evil assassin
summon: evil historian
I think that works? Sorry I'm bad at the rules once something dies.
So no, that doesn't work. You need at least 2 if you're going to score the card. So either you can pay $1 to attack, or simply discard the card for no effect, but take $1. Since the Assassin can't actually attack normally, I'm going to assume you're doing the latter.
-
if thats the case then just sell the card
Technically it's not selling the card, you get only $1, even if you'd get more for selling. It's pretty much doing nothing for a coin.

Hey Loyal Playtesters!
I'm looking at making some big fundamental changes to the game that I'm pretty excited about and working towards a solid set of 9 "base" characters. Interested in going again in the next little while?
-
Also, I won't start a new game until I have a good set of rules written up.
-
I might be interested in playing again, contingent on reading the new rules, but man, this game seemed to drag on forever. I know I wasn't always super on top of taking my actions, but after awhile I had completely lost track of what was even going on. It still seems like it has the problem where the first half of the game you're making essentially random decisions because you don't know anyone's alignment. I don't know, it seems like it could be really fun in person but as a forum game there's just something that's not clicking.

Yeah, I think (and hope) the new rules will mitigate a whole heap of the not having any idea what you're trying to do.
