GokoDom / Re: Announcing GokoDom I: From the Ashes (Sign-Ups Open)
« on: April 02, 2013, 11:49:00 am »
I had signed up by vote in the other thread but I wanted to amend that there I had said I only had base; the possibility of playing in a tournament has pretty much tipped me over the edge to paying for Goko and I now have all sets (but no promos yet).

The acronyms shouldn't line up - theory said that the previously "released" acronyms were wrong. But the costs line up correctly.

If any of you lack the capacity to solve problems involving infinitely countable hats (I know I do), here's one of my favourite puzzles (this one is by Raymond Smullyan; I had to retranslate the version I have, so sorry if the English is wonky):

In 1918, the day the First World War armistice was signed, three married couples celebrated the occasion dining together. Each husband is the brother of one wife, and each wife is the sister of one husband; that is, there are three brother-sister pairs in the group. We know the following:

-Helen is exactly twenty-six weeks older than her husband, who was born in august.
-The sister of Mr. White, who is married to the brother-in-law of Helen’s brother, got married to him on her birthday, which is in January.
-Marguerite White isn’t as tall as William Black.
-Arthur’s sister is taller than Beatrice.
-John is fifty years old.

What is Mrs. Brown first name?

I don't know if anyone will try to solve this one or not, but just in case, here's a hint that normally should get you to the answer:
The date is relevant.

Oh interesting! Building from Jack Rudd's result then that Helen's brother is Mr. White:

The second bullet point basically just says "Mr. White's sister, Helen, who is married to her husband, got married on her January birthday."
The first bullet point says that Helen's husband was born in August, and they are 26 weeks apart in age.

Note that August 1st is exactly 26 weeks after January 31st, on a non-leap year. So Helen and her husband who were born on the same year, were not born on a leap year. John however, was born in 1868 according to point 5, which is a leap year, so John isn't Helen's husband.

Using that information, if Helen is Mrs. Brown, then we have Helen Brown née White, which means that the other two women must be Marguerite White née Black, and Beatrice Black née White. Since John isn't married to Helen, he must be Mr. White, leaving Arthur as Mr. Black. But this means Arthur's sister is Beatrice, which can't be the case since Arthur's sister must be taller than Beatrice.

So Beatrice must be Mrs. Brown.

Coppersmith

All six cards reduce your hand size.  However, if you have no treasure in hand and no remaining actions, none of them give any other benefit.

The second set of cards listed can reduce hand size with no benefit, but under conditions that have nothing to do with treasure: KC and TR provide no benefit if you have no other actions; Shanty Town provides no benefit if you have exactly one terminal non-draw in hand (really borderline?); Crossroads provides no benefit if you have only Treasure in hand; Ruined Village provides no benefit but it doesn't matter what's in your hand.

All of that said, though, I don't know how Ruined Market and Abandoned Mine would fit, because each provides a (small) benefit.

This is close enough:

Coppersmith is the correct answer.

The main consideration for all the groupings is, what effect would you be able to have on your turn if your hand consisted of exactly 5 copies of this card, and had no durations in effect from the previous turn? And this was specifically restricted to Action cards, because I came up with this by thinking of, if you possessed your opponent and played 5 schemes, what 5 cards would you want to leave in his hand?

So 5 copies of all the core cards, including coppersmith, means that the only thing that you could do is play one of them for no effect, buy a copper or a curse, and then cleanup.

The second set of cards is the set that provides at least +1 action, so you can play all five copies of these cards for no effect, and then buy Peddler if Peddler is present in the kingdom. (Note that cards like Scout do not fit this group because Scout DOES provide an additional effect other than its +1 action, even if that effect is typically not very useful.)

Ruined Market is in a set on its own because you can buy TWO coppers, or curses, or a copper and a curse.

And Ruined Mine is in a set on its own because you can use it to buy Poor House, if Poor House is in the kingdom.

I think I've got it now.
Adventurer

No, The theme is also independent of the composition of your deck.

Everyone is pretty close, but no one has guessed the correct card or the theme quite yet.

And counterfeit I suppose does require revealing a treasure but it doesn't even come close to qualifying for this list.

A couple hints:
Note that every card on each list is an action card and not a treasure or victory card.

Being able to be played for no effect is close, but not quite sufficient.

A stronger hint:

The theme does not depend on what is in the supply or what piles may or may not have run out yet. If the estate pile were out, Baron would be in the same category as Ruined Market in this case, but still not sufficient to be in the main list.

Moneylender
Mine
Mint
Spice Merchant
Stables

One card is missing.

The pattern is not cards that require revealing a treasure, because there is no sixth such card.

The following cards are close to being included, but can't be for one particular reason:

Throne Room
Shanty Town
King's Court
Crossroads
Ruined Village

Ruined Market also can't be included, but for a different reason than the above.
Abandoned Mine also can't be included, for yet a different reason.

Sounds like it would overlap with seeing if this puzzle (which is pre-Dark Ages cards) can be improved on:

Another Throne variant in Dark Ages didn't work out, and I thought of that old card and made this one. It does not go so crazy but can still facilitate a cool transforming engine.

If a card that facilitates acquiring 18 provinces by the end of turn 2 is not so crazy, I'd love to hear the Throne variant that was!

35
If Guilds introduces a card or mechanism that will allow this to happen, I expect this subforum will get rocked once again.

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Zaps
« on: August 17, 2012, 02:00:24 pm »
For the second adventure you apparently get a free zap too. It can be used to turn one of your coppers to silver, estate to duchy, or opponents estate to curse. Just 2 cards changed though

I never used my zap in the first adventure level (I mean I saw the starting cards and I thought it was completely ridiculous, so why bother? Since I knew I could beat the AI with no advantage from beta), and I had two zaps available. If we could ever get back in, it seems like you get a zap for beating each level (not sure if you get them on repeat plays) so you can stack them up for the presumably more difficult levels at the end.

Just completed one game in adventure mode!

Pretty boring so far but I guess it could get interesting.

Second game failed to load though.

So what happens if the Knights randomizer card is in the Black Market deck?

40
I hear Celestial Chameleon is designing these adventures.  If so, we are all doomed.

Well at least each adventure will only last for five turns then.

41
Nooo, there's no new "X Village" card?

I know a couple of the cards have village effects, but their names are different. I really wanted to build an all-village kingdom sometime once all the expansions are out, and we're missing two ... and I doubt Guilds will have two in it.

Village
Mining Village
Native Village
Fishing Village
Native Village
Farming Village
Border Village
Walled Village

We have Ruined Village.

But you can't get it in the kingdom by itself. You have to include a looter card, and that would break the theme.  :'(

Dominion: Dark Ages Previews / Re: Band of Misfits rules questions
« on: August 16, 2012, 11:13:17 am »
You know what? I think I've identified the source of the confusion here between my interpretation of the card and your intention for it (the same confusion has manifested both in this question and in my Conspirator question).

I'm interpreting "Play this as if it were..." as the on-play instructions for the card, similar to Throne Room's. So for instance when you play a Throne Room, here's what happens:

  • I put the Throne Room card in play. "I play a Throne Room!" What do I do now? I read the instructions on the card. Oho, it tells me to choose an Action in my hand and play it twice. I'll do that! Let's play that Smithy from my hand! Twice!

In other words, playing the Smithy is a separate event from, and a consequence of, playing the Throne Room itself. In the same way, I was visualizing Band of Misfits as this:

  • I put the Band of Misfits card in play. "I play a Band of Misfits!" What do I do now? I read the instructions on the card. Oho, it tells me to play it as another Action in the supply. I'll do that! Let's play it as a Smithy!

So in this reading, playing the Band of Misfits as a Smithy is a separate event from, and a consequence of, putting the Band of Misfits in play to begin with. But that's not the interpretation I infer that you're intending for the card text. What you're implying, if I follow, is that "Play this as if it were..." isn't instructions to execute as a result of playing the card, the way Throne Room's text is; it's instructions on what playing the card actually consists of. So the interpretation you're telling me is this:

  • I put the Band of Misfits card in play. "I play this as a Smithy!" What do I do now? Oho, I draw three cards. Okay.

Right?

If this interpretation is correct, and it sounds like it is, then what happens if there are no action cards in the supply that cost less than $5? Does that mean that you can actually NOT play a Band of Misfits, making it essentially a dead $5 card in your deck?

(either the kingdom has only $5 or above cards in it, or the only cards costing less than $5 are treasure/victory cards, or all cards costing less than $5 have been emptied already)

Note that if you have Horn of Plenty, being allowed to play a Band of Misfits without having it imitate another card can make a difference in how much the HoP is worth. I'm sure there are other reasons people can come up with for wanting to play a Band of Misfits even if it's not possible to imitate another card.

I just beat olneyce yesterday in my first and only game against him.

I think I can end on that. :)

(Thanks, olneyce, for the game!)

Oh my gosh, Chapel/Squire or Remake/Squire with Possession on the board... talk about your degenerate games.

Possession isn't an attack, so unless there are other attack cards available, this wouldn't be so bad.

47
Squire + Watchtower?

Any attack you want...for 2!  (As long as you have Watchtower in hand.)

Whoa, yeah. Watchtower definitely boosts some cards in Dark Ages. At minimum it opens up tons of new options (like gaining 3 Silvers instead of Feodum).

Would even make it worth having a ruined market in hand if you've also got a watchtower, and Squire is on the board, with at least 4 money to spend.

Puzzles and Challenges / Re: My first challenge: Turn 2 Double Colony
« on: August 06, 2012, 12:02:56 pm »
I'm incredibly pleased by the way this puzzle turned out.  It turns out that a potential "opening", which could technically appear on councilroom.com/openings, is:
Jester/Colony/Colony/Colony/Colony/Colony/Colony/Province/Province/Province/Province/Province/Province
or
Jester/Province/Province/Province/Province/Province/Province/Province/Province/Province/Province/Province/Province,
ending the game.  (Would all the gains in between show?  This isn't actually clear from what we can observe...)

A corollary of this is that it's possible to end the game (on Provinces) on turn two!!!  Who would've thought...

I now want to make this happen. Except doesn't isotropic only support up to 4 player games? And I guess the shuffle luck involved probably makes this much more difficult to run than any solo challenge.

General Discussion / Re: Anybody got Diablo 3 yet?
« on: May 15, 2012, 12:56:57 pm »
I am reading peoples posts on the forum (always a bad thing) that its very very short. Does that ring true to any of you guys?

The entire game, or the first act?

I'm not even sure how many acts there are but if the remaining acts are comparable to the first, then that's more than Diablo 2 was I think. And there's four difficulty levels of course. My 3 hour run of act 1 was by going by almost as quickly as possible through pretty much everything; there could have been a couple more hours at least of content in there if I was a completionist or explored optional areas, or even tried to grind at all.

I played this morning for about 3 hours (with a coworker who I didn't even know was going to be playing Diablo 3, but who was on my battle.net friend list from Starcraft 2, so when he came online shortly after I did, we joined up) before coming to work and got through Act 1. We pretty much zoomed through everything, just stopping long enough to listen to the quest dialog (for the quests that weren't in the beta at least.) Finished the first act with a level 14 monk.

Avin#1495

So far it feels like more of a sequel to Diablo than Diablo 2 did - storywise especially.
