Inherited Capital (6) + Cursed Gold (3) + Copper x3 (3) + Coffers from Baker (1) = $13.  Just shy of buying Dominate (unless I missed some other mechanic that could give us 1 more coin in the opening turn without using up an event/landmark/project/way/trait slot).

Actually, I did miss such a mechanic.  Add Importer to the kingdom with the League of Bankers Ally.  Now we get:
Inherited Capital (6) + Cursed Gold (3) + Copper x3 (3) + Coffers from Baker (1) + League of Bankers w/ 4 starting favors from Importer (1) = $14.  First turn Dominate buy is possible!

The more interesting question is how many Dominates you can buy on the first turn.

Um... one?  If you're thinking of doing tricks with Populate, I don't think its possible with Dominate on the board.  Cursed Gold/Baker/League of Bankers gets you to $9 first turn which is one short of the 10 you need for Populate.  To buy Populate first turn, you need the help of another unbound landscape to get you to 10, and that's not possible if Populate and Dominate are taking up both slots.

You don't need Populate. I just bought 44 Dominates on turn 1 with this kingdom:

Fortress, Priest, Villa, Animal Fair, King's Court, Squire, Tracker, Importer, Watchtower, Cavalry, Family of Inventors, Dominate, Advance, shelters

The basic idea is to use Family of Inventors to make Cavalry cheap and KC cost $6 (for Advance), use a Squire to get started with extra +buys, reroll your starting hand until you have Necropolis in it, and use Advance and your coins to get Cavalries to draw everything in the start. Once you have a Fortress, you can get anything you want without having to pay coins for it, and once you have played some Priests, getting the stuff you want generates you coins. Watchtower in hand + Fortress can turn +buys into +cards after the Cavalries are all gone, and I used Horses a bit for draw too. Watchtower for draw is kind of annoying because it eats up Villa supply super inefficiently, but I did that too.

The game ID for my exact plays: 145365380

This was just a quick lazy attempt, I bet it can be improved massively even by just playing the exact same kingdom better and there might be a better kingdom too since this is just literally the first one that I came up with by modifying the entire-supply-gaining kingdoms a bit to make the general idea work with just one Event. I suspect the biggest improvements might be to use more Horses and fewer Watchtowers for draw, and to optimize the order in which you buy things around when you first start to have meaningful choices.

How is Black Market level 10?

How is it not level 10? It introduces a complicated mechanic used by no other thing in the game, makes you read up to 60 extra cards in addition to what's in the kingdom, does things it doesn't say it does, has over 800 words of official FAQs and other rule clarifications on the wiki, and makes frequent appearances in the Rules Questions forum. The only other card-shaped thing in the game that you really could reasonably argue is more advanced or complicated than Black Market is Possession, and even Possession is simpler by some of these metrics and on everyone's ban list by default.

Build an engine with +cards and villages if both of those are on the board and get at least one copy of the best way to permanently get rid of your starting cards on the board as early as possible. Once you're drawing your whole deck every turn, you have a lot of different options depending on what's available and what your opponent is doing; you could keep building a bigger engine that buys multiple Provinces per turn (which tends to be kind of hard to do and unnecessarily slow in just Base + Seaside, but it is still sometimes worth doing especially if you can just build a 1-Province-per-turn engine and add an Outpost to it to effectively make it two), build up to 1 Province + something else per turn which can keep your deck functional while you're greening and possibly let you get Province + Duchy turns later, or just immediately start buying Provinces if you're in a desperate hurry or if your deck can easily handle adding that many green cards to it. Sometimes you have to try to get away with an engine that doesn't consistently draw the whole deck every turn, or perhaps can't quite draw the whole deck at all.

Some attacks like Militia, Blockade and both types of Witches are worth buying early, and some others like Corsair and Bandit can add more value to your deck when you're playing them every turn but aren't critical to get early unless you don't have anything better to do.

If you can't build an engine, usually the best strategy is to buy a relatively small number of the strongest-by-themselves kingdom cards and just basic treasures and other cards like Sailor that boost your tempo without antisynergizing with anything else you're doing.

There's a lot more nuance to it than this but this is the very short and mostly basically correct version.

Isn't vimeo supposed to be a youtube competitor? It honestly feels like it's not even trying.

Not really, and the difference is obvious if you go to youtube.com vs going to vimeo.com.

The bottom premove is for reacting, and you can autobuy by clicking on a card in your buy phase before playing your treasures.

It is mildly annoying to have to remember one version of the "which one out of affect and effect was the verb again" thing for most conversations and a different version to get the ErrinF quote right. A few times, I have accidentally remembered the ErrinF version in normal conversations.

You can tell that people are autistic but not very smart when they keep using fancy words but incorrectly. I'm guessing this is because they have a better than average ability to remember words they've heard only a few times, but they lack the ability to read social contexts sufficiently to figure out what the words meant.

9
Is the Moneylender autoplay on by default so you might not notice it? I would double check that.

It is on by default.

10
Did you pick a Copper from your hand to trash for Moneylender while also having the Moneylender autoplay on? If that's the case, the Copper that got trashed automatically was the Moneylender Copper and the Copper you chose to trash was for Sewers.

So I had this short back and forth with a somewhat autistic internet friend and then kept thinking about whether or not it's appropriate/polite to inform them of the social subtext that they clearly missed. But I think there's just no way to do it that doesn't come across as combative

I'd say the help is way more valuable than the criticism is unpleasant.

Rules Questions / Re: Overlord and Pirate
« on: April 26, 2024, 02:32:25 pm »
Ah, yes. It makes sense that you can't play the Overloard as a Pirate Reaction.. The Overlord can play an action, not a reaction.

More accurately, there is no rules distinction between what part of Pirate's text is the "Action" and what is the "Reaction". The entire card is always both an Action and a Reaction (and also a Duration). When you are playing an Overlord, such as during your Action phase by spending an action as per the rules of the game, you can use it to play a Pirate from the supply — Pirate is an Action and is not a Command, and it being other types in addition to Action doesn't stop that from working. When you do that, the Overlord plays a Reaction, because it plays a Pirate, and Pirate is always a Reaction.

The reason why what you're trying to do doesn't work is that Pirate's below-the-line ability lets you play it from your hand; it does not let you play cards other than itself from your hand, the Overlord that you do have in your hand is an Overlord, not a Pirate, and Overlord does not have any special abilities that let you play it at unusual times like when someone is gaining a Treasure. This is always true regardless of whose turn it is.

I'm making some assumptions about the scenario here such as this happening when its not your turn, which you weren't specific about.

That's not relevant though, you can't do it on your own turn either for exactly the same reason.

Arapocalypse just contacted me, they would still like to get a participant from f.ds even though we've been super inactive. I had to decline the invitation myself because I don't have any idea what my schedule is going to be like after I hopefully graduate next month, but somebody should go! It was a lot of fun for me last year with no caveats. The organizers are very competent and pleasant to interact with, and I think honestly any f.ds Mafia regular is a high enough level player to potentially do well in the champs, so if you even slightly feel like you might be interested and you're available, you should sign up (and at this point I think whoever is first to do so should automatically get the spot).

My WDC 217 submission:

Respawn
$2 Action
Trash a card from your hand. If you do and the player to your left is not on MasN Hub, gain an Action card onto your deck costing up to $2 more than the trashed card.

Q as in genderqueer is not more of a container term than the B.

I don't buy that. Bisexual is pretty staight-forward, whereas queer I think most people just consider a container, even if there's some asterisks

Bisexual is a container for people who feel sexual attraction but aren't straight or gay. Genderqueer is a container for people who aren't men or women. I guess there is the difference that genderqueer includes genderless people while bisexual doesn't include aces, but I don't think that's a particularly useful point to draw the line between what counts as a container.

What makes the Q special though, other than being a more recent and less established addition? "Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, genderqueer plus all the other people who are in this vague category" is not inherently less sensible than the same description without the genderqueer.

Because even if Q is not a perfect container term, it's still mostly a container term, and hence made redundant by the +, no? I mean, sure everything is technically made redundant by + as you point out, but there's more of a reason to explicitly name specific groups than approximate container terms.

Q as in genderqueer is not more of a container term than the B.

Shelling ;) Although ordinarily I'd say the Shelling point is the first item of the list.

Kant would probably be the Schelling point for most people even if he wasn't the first item because he's the best known by far.

Speaking of things that bother me, it shouldn't be LGBTQ+. "Queer" is already a catch-all; either make it LGBTQ or LGBT+ >:(

The "Q" doesn't always stand for queer (it sometimes stands for questioning) and "queer" is not exactly a catch-all because
  • most of the prominent definitions of "queer" only include people who are not cis and/or not straight and therefore exclude e.g. cishet aros and cishet intersexual people
  • in practice, the reclaimed "queer" is often used as a shorthand for genderqueer
  • it is not entirely uncontroversial that the word has been successfully reclaimed, so the convention is that you shouldn't call other people queer unless they describe themselves as queer

It is redundant with the +, but so are all the other letters in the acronym.

mhh I suppose. I think then the obvious solution is to just say LGBT+ and leave the Q out of it. Definitely don't wanna exclude aroace people

What makes the Q special though, other than being a more recent and less established addition? "Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, genderqueer plus all the other people who are in this vague category" is not inherently less sensible than the same description without the genderqueer.

FWIW I usually just type LGBT because the + is obviously implied even if people don't type it out, unless I'm responding to someone in which case I copy their spelling, or writing something potentially controversial where it's extra important to signal that I'm one of the Progressives™.

Paul Christiano named as US AI Safety Institute Head of AI Safety

That's... pretty great, actually. Paul Christiano is about the best person you could want in there. Eliezer, being his humble self, has previously described him as the only person in the world who disagrees with him despite a technical understanding of the problem.

Even more credit to Biden for his help in making this happen.

That is unexpectedly great news.

I’ve thought for a while that Potion would be a bit better if it came with +Buy. Makes the Potion more interesting if you wanted the Alchemy card but couldn’t trash the Potion, and also opens up the edge cases where even if you don’t care about the Alchemy card, you might be desperate enough for +Buy to purchase the Potion anyways.

Personally, I think the solution would be to make Potion a one-shot. That would strongly effect gameplay.
