Title: One Trick Pony
Post by: Grujah on July 06, 2012, 04:26:44 am
Inspired by WW's Oscar the Grouch thread (and me finding out I actually got this one!)

As I see it, its mostly done with Ironworks and Workshops, but lets see some more interesting ones.

Here's mine, its 7 Remakes in a IGG game:

All awsome so far, but this takes the cake  ;D

@Davio, not even a Harem for standard HP + Sil + Gold + 2$? Though it would mean one HP less.

We were both fighting for IGGs and ended up with a 50-50 split, but he was trying to scoop up Duchies whereas I bought an Island whenever I had $4.

I am apparently the king of this goal. Most often it's ironworks or workshops, in a gardens/SR rush. But there's also:
10 barons http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20120212-155642-6e7d7b04.html
7 courtyards http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20120429-130625-1d87e807.html
8 feasts (though I get two bridges passed to me) http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20110512-112259-ea785bb1.html
8 militias http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111027-195510-32d45ec8.html
7 goons, wharves a couple times, and islands a couple times

7 courtyards http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20120429-130625-1d87e807.html

Your opponent deserves some kind of award there for getting seven dukes and no duchies.

For non-ironworks, non-workshops approaches, I think the trick is having a treasure card that supports a one-action strategy, so actually its a two-card based deck, but qualifies for one trick pony as the treasure card doesn't count for it.

Looking at my stats, I've done one trick pony 9 times: 3 games with ironworks, 4 games with workshop.

My other two were: Caravan (with one Talisman):
http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20120306-070441-d2a61815.html

...though if you look at how this ends, it ends stupidly, with my opponent buying the last colony then losing because he hasn;t added up.

and: Monument with IGG:
http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20120305-105509-297dbbda.html

...a tempting board, with all those engine components for goons meganess, labs, king courts, tactician, bazaar... but I took one look at it and thought "no trashing except lookout, IGG present and monument there? Its gotta be monument/IGG all the way."

Perhaps I was lucky that the monuments never collided, but regardless, I felt confident that IGG was going to slow down my opponent enough. In all honesty, what I expected was IGGs bought by my opponent too, and a much faster game, and I never expected to get so many monuments, but there it is...

10 Horse traders
I can't decide if that's highly appropriate for One Trick Pony, or a sign of business being slow.  Interesting game: is running out the Horse Traders better than picking up Estates?

@Davio, not even a Harem for standard HP + Sil + Gold + 2$? Though it would mean one HP less.
Not only do you miss out on a Hunting Party, you make the Hunting Parties you have less effective.  Finding a Hunting Party is almost always going to be better than finding another kind of Silver that isn't providing you any special benefit.

My only non-Gardens example is Minion (http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20110616-143144-517610f5.html), but I do have a Gardens game with Woodcutter (http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111015-021219-9350da9f.html) instead of Workshop or Ironworks.

It isn't at all clear from the achievement description, but you have to buy a large number of the same action to get the achievement. I think seven?

Do you mean this game?

I don't know about the 7+ rule; I thought there was a rule you had to buy only one action (+ $ and VP) and win. Maybe I am remembering it wrong.

You have to have 7 or more of that action.

Thats why things like DoubleJack or BM Envoy do not count.

Ones I'd like to see:

Walled Village

Bag of Gold

Bag of Gold is impossible. Golem might be viable if Tunnel is on the board. That would be a crazy game, though.
Also,

Chapels
Tacticians
Black Markets

Villages :)

What an awesome draw he got after his turn 18 - 2 nobles, 3 goons? That's about as good a hand as he could have hoped to draw into, let alone have as his starting hand.
