Not a whole lot of news other than 'It's a large one', but Jay confirms it here:

Called it!
... OK, fine, I knew something in advance.
-
Great news :D
I'm interested, though - Hinterlands brought us cards with on-buy effect, Cornucopia introduced concept of hand/deck variety, Dark ages had Shelters, ruins and on-trash effects, Guilds' novelties were coin tokens and overpaying... Anybody want to guess what new gameplay element will new expansion bring?

I'm sure jsh does (and I could too)
-
I think it'll bring us something new. But it's more fun watching other people guess.
-
How do you guys have insider info?

How do you guys have insider info?
jsh is a playtester for the set. liopoil played it back in July at the Chicago meetup.

It has, quite a bit actually. Was a whole lot of fun getting to test it in person. If only more forumites came...
I tried all I could to get a southeast meetup going. The offer's still on the table, wink wink.

liopoil played it back in July at the Chicago meetup.
This is why there conveniently weren't any photos of us playing Dominion at that meetup. I didn't "forget" to take photos - I couldn't!

When I graduate in May, depending on where I end up, I would definitely come to another meetup
-
If you came to Germany, I'd definitely meet up with you :P
-
Canada wants people too!
-
Damn! That's crazy had no idea you guys playtested the new set at the meetup. Too bad I live in California, I would so meetup to playtest a Dominion set.

Man, I wish this was the treasure chest expansion. But, new can be good as well.
-
That's great news :D Very much hoping it will also be translated into Dutch though. How long did it take previously before the translations came out?
-
I would recommend avoiding translations... (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=8110.0)

It's going to be Dominion: Bomb.

Wow, so everyone that went to the Chicago meetup were hush about this for, like, three months?

Wait a minute.... Didn't LastFootnote say he was bringing Enterprise if anyone wanted to playtest?
Did that idea get dumped in favor of an actual new expansion..... OR..... !!!!

You just have to angle the camera high enough...
-
Before Prince, permanents felt like the biggest omission mechanics-wise in Dominion, so I wouldn't have been surprised for a new expansion to introduce them. But Prince more-or-less covers anything a permanent could reasonably do, so I expect we won't see permanents in the new expansion.
Because this is an expansion and not a spin-off, I doubt that we'll see anything drastic like a board or combat system. So I dunno really what this expansion can have as a theme that will feel new. Action/card/buy tokens? Or maybe it won't have a unified theme and just be a collection of interesting cards, which would be fine by me.
-

The idea got dumped in favor of the new expansion. I mean, I brought the Enterprise cards too because why not, but I also brought my copy of the playtest set, and I was not going to push playtesting some fan cards in the face of a new official expansion.
As it turns out my family was only there for a few hours, so my wife and I each got one game of Dominion in while the other watched our son. Luckily for everyone involved, other people also had copies of the set there.

As the organizer, even I didn't know this would be there - I showed up slightly late to the meetup, sprinted upstairs feeling like I was a terrible host, and saw several people with a game already underway. "Oh great, you started without me - excellent! What sets do you have here? I brought my complete set, it even has Prince!" I offered/bragged.
"Funny story..." someone replied.

Yeah, I have to admit I was disappointed that I got there last and didn't get to see anybody's face when they got the news. You're a lucky guy, person who may or may not want him or herself outed as a playtester!
Thanks again for organizing the meetup, Voltaire, and thanks to everybody who was there on Saturday. My wife thought it was going to be a total drag, but she had a great time! Way to be awesome people!
-
Woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Awesome news!

I would recommend avoiding translations... (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=8110.0)
In that case.. Does anyone know whether the two versions have the same backgrounds (so they can't be told from one another)? Because if that's the case I could just buy the English versions..
-
oh hey I can stop feeling smug now!
-
I need to take a vacation before the end of the year.. we should do a winter meetup!
-
You're a lucky guy, person who may or may not want him or herself outed as a playtester!
After you said this, I had to spend 15 minutes trying to figure out who that person isAnd now I know. Muahaha

*spasms*
And now we have to wait 6 months before we hear anything else about this, even a title.
And of course by "we" I'm not including you people who went to the Chicago meetup.

I feel so jealous. Is there any way possible I can get in on this, or is the set already finished?

The people who were only at the meetup actually know very little at this point, and they definitely don't know the title. So rejoice! It's just us testers hoarding knowledge. Believe me, I want to share it more than I want to hide it, but them's the breaks. All I'll tell you is that the expansion is gonna be great and worth the wait.

On the bright side, Temporum is coming out any day now.
-
It's just the playtesters (last footnote, jsh, others) who know much about the set. I played like 3 games with maybe 15 total cards in the state that they were in on paper cutouts 3 months ago. I (along with most attendees of the meetup) don't know anything for sure about the set besides the sort of cards/concepts that may be introduced. It wasn't even certain that it would be published at the time, and I doubt that the set is anywhere near finalized still.

Out of curiosity, is there an NDA, or is it more like
Scout's Honor
$0 - Action/Victory
Don't reveal anything. Put the unrevealed cards out of mind in any order.

It's Scout's Honor, but man, I'd like to test future stuff if there is any so I ain't going to break it.

Reminds me, I need to figure out what Temporum is.
But seriously, realistically, I should not be getting excited right now.
We might learn the title in January.
Which would mean we'd might learn the theme of the set in March.
Which would mean we'd might see the cover of the box in May.
Which would mean we'd might see the previews in August.
Which would mean we'd finally get to purchase the expansion in September.
It seems rather counterproductive to get hyped for something I'm not even really going to know anything about, let alone play, for almost another year.

My biggest regret about playtesting is that I won't be surprised about the previews. For Hinterlands, Dark Ages, and Guilds, that was like Christmas morning five days in a row. Those of you who don't yet have the set spoiled for them, enjoy it!

Sure, but the important part is that we know that there actually will be an expansion! That's all that matters. And personally I like how the dominion expansions are spread out over many years, it lets us enjoy them more. If they had all been released in 2008 we might not still be talking about dominion anymore.

I'd like to use this as my excuse for why I haven't been able to promote in the League.
...and just a reminder, I'll be going to the Tournament at U-Con (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=11855.0) in a couple of weeks. I can ask if it's OK to bring everything there?
-
The real reason I would want to know about them is to maybe make a difference for the final product. I learned my lesson about spoilers throung Netrunner.

It's in good hands. I made a lot of suggestions for fixes; for an example of how good they are, check out the art thread.

Well I'm Sicilian. On my father's side, so I could be "made." People tend to respect that.
If you do a search for Greed Vaccarino, as I have done for obvious reasons, you get http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/apr/18/hunt-for-last-mafia-fugitive-matteo-messina-denaro-sicily

I just want to know who sent you the card info to playtest. Did Jay approach you? Donald X. V.?
I needed some playtesters. The old playtesters had scattered to the four winds. I did let them know about this amazing opportunity but many of them had their own lives now.
I wanted people who could playtest irl. So, they had to have Dominion and be that kind of person. And I wanted players who were good. And I didn't want to say, "so, who here is good and has the physical game?" It was obv. going to stay a secret until Jay announced it.
There was a recent thread for a tournament, where I could see how people did. And there was the Chicago meet-up thread, with some people saying, yes I'm coming and bringing Dominion. So I looked at who had done well in the tournament, who also could bring Dominion to Chicago. And I invited some of them to playtest.
Later, Doug programmed the set into isotropic (sorry, not trying to taunt anyone), so I also invited some players who were just good, who might have no ability to playtest irl. But for the first group, you somehow had to be willing to go to Chicago. It was just the data I had.
-
And it'll be on Goko sometime in 2020.
I don't know yet if Jay will want it to come out on MakingFun at the same time as irl, or not. It will be up to him mostly, MakingFun are pretty likely to want it as soon as they can have it. The main reason Jay might not give it to them in time is that he sometimes is worried about leaks.
-
Darn, should have done better in GokoDom
-
Shoot. I did uncharacteristically well in GokoDom, but I couldn't go to the Chicago meetup. Ah well, I would've been a terrible playtester anyway, since I haven't had time to play IRL (or online, for that matter) in ages.
-
I wasn't in that GokoDom, and was lucky enough to be grandfathered in through my playtesting of Prince. My main contribution has been complaining loudly and frequently about things I don't like. And sometimes suggesting changes. Oh, and creating card images that look like published Dominion cards, rather than like the prototypes you see in the Outtakes file (http://dominionstrategy.com/2013/06/24/dominion-outtakes/).
As it turns out, I am no slouch at the game after all, and have been at least holding my own against some of the heavy hitters, like hey Mic Qsenoch (in case you were wondering when the hell he and I would have played a game together such that we were using my randomizer (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=5799.msg430679#msg430679)).
-
I still don't get how you got an official unoffical test set of the cards? Was the chicago meetup that big?
I'm pretty excited though. I won't be buying physical copies since I hardly use all the physical cards I have now, but I'll totally buy it on goko when I'm 50.
-
Given I live in Chicago, I am now really sad I missed the meetup. :(
Next time! ;)

Hah, looks like the Chicago meet up eclipsed our Montreal meet up even more than we though, eh?
Will the Chicago attendees get credited for playtesting once the expansion comes out?
You know what, I'm somehow glad that we'll likely have the next Qvist ranking before the expansion comes out.

I doubt they would get credited... At some point you have to cut off the line, right? Well, I'm not the boss of that.

I certainly wouldn't think so! My contributions consisted almost entirely of saying "this card is fun" or "this card isn't fun." Which is a thing to know, but really...

I'd think that's a pretty important thing to know. Sure people don't like junking attacks, but if a card is really just plain not fun I don't see why it needs to be included.
-
Let's put it this way - Donald hasn't asked me for my real name. ;)

Of course you're not trying but it still stings just as bad.
-
I still don't get how you got an official unoffical test set of the cards? Was the chicago meetup that big?
We did not "get" a test set of cards. We printed them, cut them, and sleeved them over actual Dominion cards. It was very ink-intensive, especially when using official-looking card images.
It wasn't the meetup itself that got the test set. Some of us who had the set (myself, jsh357, AdamH) went to the meetup and brought our copies.
-
One thing I recommend is making the background colour of the box not like one of the ones already released. We still use the original boxes and it does mean I occasionally grab prosperity instead of hinterlands or base box instead of intrigue.....
-

If they'd all been released in 2008, half of them would be Scout.

So now I have to figure out what to be more jealous of: That some people have gotten to playtest the new expansion, or that some people have gotten to play Dominion on Isotropic again!

The spirit was willing but the wallet was weak...

You don't need only good players to playtest cards, maybe you want to, you know, have some more intermediate players (it is a complete coincidence that I'm an intermediate player...), uh, playtest too, for, uh, er, a, different, standpoint, or something...? ::)
-

I have to be honest with you, I was one of the people who whined the most about Goko when we lost Iso -- maybe not here but I was really butt-hurt about it.
When I played on Iso for the first time doing this, I was really surprised at the way I felt about it. While playing, and for about a day after, I was filled with a lot of emotions, not too different from reconnecting with someone I used to date. There was an overwhelming amount of happiness, sadness, lots of different things going on.
I know I may come off as emotional on a lot of my videos, but I don't actually feel most of the emotions you see, I haven't really been all that emotional of a person for several years now. Playing on Iso really stirred up a lot more than I was expecting, and a lot more than I thought I was capable of feeling.
And here's the strange thing, it wasn't all good. I mean, I had some really good times on Iso -- that's where I grew as a Dominion player to where I am now. It was so cool seeing the Dark Ages and Guilds cards on there, and watching newer cards change ALL the time.
But I've gotten really used to Goko and if I had to pick between Goko in its current state (including extension) and Iso, it's not a difficult choice for me: I'd rather play on Goko.
The pace may be slower, but I really don't mind that. It's so much better at allowing me to follow what my opponent is doing -- I don't have to add up to see how many actions, buys, and dollars they had at the end of their turn, which is super-useful. I don't have to click on the info button and look through a lot of information to see something that I can either see already from the main screen or can see relatively clearly from just one click on Goko. And you may not believe it, but there are misclicks that happen on Iso that just don't happen on Goko (though I have to admit I needed to change my pants the first time I got to use the undo playing basic treasures feature again).
On the other hand, you should have seen me the night I got that message from DXV asking me to playtest. I was hosting a board game night at my house and I'm in the middle of a game of Resistance when I see it on my phone. Everyone is like "Adam, it's your turn, what are you going to do?" and I'm sitting there holding my phone in front of my face, with my mouth just hanging open like an idiot. I was squeeing so hard I literally couldn't speak. I'm smiling like an idiot as I type this just thinking about it, and that was several months ago.
-
Adam is 100% correct. I think it's fantastic that we had isotropic for testing the new set, and a million thanks to dougz for that. But as far as play experience goes, Goko (with the extension) beats it hands-down. As Adam said, it's worlds easier to track what your opponent is doing. And more than that, I find I have a much better feel for what's in my own deck on Goko than I do on iso.
Goko was really bad when it was first released. Way worse than what we were used to with iso. But current-day Goko with Salvager available is generally superior. Take it from some dudes who have used both really recently.
-

Take it to RSP!! ;)
-
Thirding their sentiments. I love iso, and it definitely has its advantages, but it's WAY harder to keep track of what's going on, which is somewhat of a big deal, especially with new cards that may do things you aren't expecting. We should be grateful for what we have at this point.

Early next year! (http://boardgamegeek.com/article/17239506#17239506)
Although we cannot yet suggest a release date, we expect to begin working on the art later this month or early next. Given normal turnaround time, we would expect to have all the card art by the end of the year. At that point, we can begin putting it all together and offering translation files to those partners who are interested. We expect then to be able to release the game in late spring - dare I say March or April or May. We will send more information as we have it.

There are board to be delays, as there always are. I'm going to guess that if Jay is saying March through May now, it'll be out in June or July. Nothing against Jay. I'm just going by the track record for Dominion expansions.

Historically it's been May, June, or July, for expansions where the art was started after Spiel. I don't know what caused those differences; it may just be up to when Jay gets to it. However if it's printed in the USA as I suspect it will be, that could shave a month off of the time for the US release.

Would it be too much to ask, then, to know the title of the set? I mean, we knew Guilds for well over a year in advance.

I'm going to take a wild guess at who has the authority to answer this question...

It's too much to ask! So that's that, you've over-asked. Now you have to unask some stuff.

We could refer to it by code name. Someone already suggested Dominion: Bomb. I propose Dominion: Gunpowder or, should that not be popular, Dominion: Zebra Riders.

I would be totally down with a Dominion: Industry expansion all about trains and steam engines and lightbulbs.

Dominion: Greed

Greed, for lack of a better word, is good
EDIT: just realized something. Last April fool's, someone joked that a new expansion was coming... did some people already know that it was true? Because then it must have been really hard to keep their mouth shut.

The greatest joke of all. It was all true.

Based on current trends, I predict 'Dominion: Gluten-free'
-
My money's on 'Dominion: Divine Providence'. All the cards are important figures or symbols from world religions: you can build a big Mohammed stack, or fight over the multitude of Apostles like we fight over Knights today. Or if you'd rather play a less interactive game, build up some Karma tokens for a Reincarnation megaturn.
I don't anticipate this set offending anyone or causing any other problems.

Will the Chicago attendees get credited for playtesting once the expansion comes out?
I certainly wouldn't think so! My contributions consisted almost entirely of saying "this card is fun" or "this card isn't fun." Which is a thing to know, but really...
Front of the box of the new expansion:

Apostle has to be a victory card so we can have 12 of them.

Yes. Except Base and Intrigue kind of had 291? Since the basic cards take up 209 out of 500 cards.
-
And bear in mind Dark Ages' 500 cards included 50 Ruins, 15 Spoils, 20 for Madman/Mercenary, 10 Rats, probably something else weird I forgot, so it was more like it had 400 cards if you go just by Kingdom stuff.

18 Shelters.
-
So, if Jay didn't make a typo, we have ~100 cards of extra things. Or it's just a lot of kingdom cards. Or they're all Victory cards.

I just realized that we can measure the approximate release date in terms of Dominion League seasons. 4-5 seasons for the name of the expansion? 7-9 seasons for the previews? Somehow, it makes the wait sting less.
-
400 cards strongly implies there will be "extra" stuff. Otherwise we are taking about >35 kingdom cards.

Not quite, 35 kingdom cards already means at least 385 cards (with 11 cards per pile), and more with VP cards. You can't fit in a 36th card when there's more than 2 VP cards.
Still, 35 kingdom cards would be huge; I would also expect extra "base" cards or something similar with 400 cards. Maybe ~50-100 extra cards and 30-26 kingdom cards?

I kind of hope we don't get extra base cards. We can already buy base cards or get them with base/intrigue. Also, of note, Jay says they may at some point in the future change base and intrigue to have the new base cards with arts. Also, they are planning on selling a package of coin tokens for those of us who want more tokens.
Anyway, my guess is that we are getting a 35 kingdom set like DA just without crazy cards added in.
-

I'm pretty sure that by "extra base cards", he meant some new cards that were in the Supply, but not Kingdom cards, like Potion, Ruins, etc.

If that's the case, it's unlikely we'll get Victory cards. Donald did say after Feodum that there really wasn't all that much more he could really *do* with Victory cards.

Yes. Jay already ruled out including the standard base cards in the new expansion on BGG.

He also said that he put all remaining working card ideas into Dark Ages ;-) I hope he's still found something new and interesting - it's unlikely that all new cards use a new mechanic, no expansion has ever done this...

wasn't that purely directed to alt VP? you can still do victory cards with a static VP boost and either a reaction or an on-gain/buy, like tunnel or farmland.
-

Maybe somewhat OT, but am I the only one who HATES the full-card art Base Cards? Maybe the numbers on the originals didn't have to be so enormous, but why in the world would you go to the opposite extreme and make them such a tiny part of the card? It's terrible for user-friendliness, especially for less experienced players. Why would they not have the art on the top half like all other cards, or at least leave enough room for coin/point symbols of a similar size to those on cards like Cache and Farmland?

Germany got the best of both worlds. Nice art plus larger, eye-catching coin and VP amounts.

On the other hand, many expansions are out of print now because RGG started publishing German Dominion expansions themselves and not every one has been re-released, yet. Alchemy and Hinterlands have been put together in one box which really sucks if you don't have Alchemy already (like me). The Guilds release took like forever as well.

You mean Alchemy and Cornucopia have been put together in one box. Yeah, that's a shame if you already own one of them.
EDIT: On the other hand, holy shit is Guilds ever expensive compared to the full-sized sets. (30€ for Guilds, 35€ for full-sized expansions, 40€ for the base set.) For only 5€ more, you're getting twice as much content. No wonder Hans im Glück wanted smaller expansions if they were charging that much for them.

Yeah you're absolutely right, it's Cornucopia and Alchemy. Oh, and I didn't want to complain about pricing but when they were at Hans im Glück, large sets were around 25-30 € (Dark Ages was a bit more expensive, 30-35€), small sets were around 18-25€.
I think I got my Guilds with discount for 23€, though

I'm sure they intend to have everything re-released around when it makes sense to. There were a lot of leftover HiG copies of expansions filling up store shelves.
-
I still didn't buy Guilds because I can't get over the fact that it costs nearly as much as Dark Ages despite only having a third of the cards.

Did Celestial Chameleon playtest?
-
You know, with 400 cards if this has two victory cards and no blanks that would leave with us with exactly 36 kingdom cards this expansion. This could technically be bigger than DA even though it has 100 less cards.

I forgot about the randomizers. Still, Kingdom would be >33, which is huge. I fully expect there to be a couple extras (i.e. non-Kingdom piles), which could be quite large piles potentially. I would bank on 25-30 Kingdom cards, which still easily qualifies as "a large one".
-

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/image/1814039/dominion
But it's awkward to have the larger coin symbols when you hold several cards, since they're larger than the kingdom Treasures' corner symbols, and not quite at the upper corner. Unless you sort your hand cards with only the upper left corner visible...
And the VP amounts have no business in the upper half of the card (nor in the bottom line, for that matter), you don't need to see them when stacking your hand cards.
So I agree with Rubby (no matter the German/English difference). They should have made the base cards' design consistent with the kingdom cards (see Harem) - or, if they insisted on full-size images, at least superimpose the large (at least Harem-sized) coin/VP amount over the image at the "right position", which is the center or the middle of the lower half of the card, not the upper corner or the bottom line.
Also, the coins' images are too "crowded" and too obstrusive for my taste. The VP/Curse images are beautiful and inconspicuous enough, though...
-
I think Isotropic had it right by simply having the large coin in the center be a colour associated with the treasure.
-
Overall, I think the German version is the best. I do prefer artwork on my cards, but when I am teaching people how to play, I do think the current format makes it slightly more difficult for beginners to realize the denominations of stuff. Maybe, we will get one last revised edition of the treasures when they are eventually included with the base set and intrigue.

Why do you keep switching people? You wouldn't have to teach them every time if you played against the same people more.
