But it still seems like a worthwhile project despite all that, so eh

Can't disagree with that.

One thing that's always bothered me is that the smart people I'm listening to tend to think that Ranked Choice is one of the worst alternatives to FPTP, although still better. I've never heard Andrew talk about Ranked Choice vs. other alternatives. Approval voting is super simple, for example, and I think is supposed to be better

Luckily it's not a big deal since you can just click them away, but I do wonder who wants this.

Orion and the Dark (2024)

This is a kids movie on Netflix. I watched it because Charlie Kaufman wrote the script. Maybe. Sort of. Like he wrote a prior version.

It's a weird one because it clearly has his style at parts, but then other parts, not so. It definitely has more of him in it than Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, but doesn't compare well to any of the movies that he legitimately wrote. It kinda falls apart in the second half. It gets very meta but not in as smart of a way as it should. Some parts are very funny though and were definitely his idea.

Easy 10/10 when we go by kids movies standards. Like a way more interesting and less predictable plot than the usual. But we don't, so I think 7/10 is about right.

I have a few guesses

- Sometimes, complex cards are genuinely worse because they only happen absent a great idea. Like, if you have a unique idea, you make it into a simple card and are done with it. If you don't have a unique idea, you just start tagging on stuff onto a card (and then maybe scrap/re-add/modify) until you sort of have something. This is not always how complex cards are created, but if it is, it may well be justified that they don't do well

- Complex cards have more components and hence more to criticize. Especially relevant if, to whatever degree, you adopt a measure based on how many flaws you can detect rather than the more subjective sense of how excited you are by the card

- When you design a card, understanding it feels like a trivial cost/buy-in compared to the value that the card provides as an idea or if it were/is played with. But if you judge (or even just read other cards) then you have no prior investment into most designs, so trying to get the hang of it can feel like a significant cost. This can create a negative vibe and since everyone secretly decides everything on vibes, that lowers chances significantly

- As a judge, you don't want it to look like anyone can win the contest by force. E.g., say we make a contest and everyone submits a simple design except one person who makes a 5-step traveler line. If you give the win to that person, it sort of looks like you're rewarding the most work rather than the best idea. (This is probably the weakest point though, and in fact high effort cards don't tend to get a lot of upvotes from other people, either.)

It altogether seems like most people primarily like the "oh that's really clean and clever" type cards.

I have the impression that if an individual utilizes sophisticated language in a context where it is unexpected, this behavior will correlate positively with  autism on their end, even if the language they've utilized didn't contain improperly utilized terms.

Very cool! Alas:

(graph was made before this contest started, so it's not judge-specific, seems like a general phenomenon to me)

So I had this short back and forth with a somewhat autistic internet friend and then kept thinking about whether or not it's appropriate/polite to inform them of the social subtext that they clearly missed. But I think there's just no way to do it that doesn't come across as combative

Of course this leads to people not getting training data for social stuff

maybe the better answer would be that you totally can because they wouldn't be offended because they're autistic, but idk if it works like that

I think the right move is to wait a few days and then bring it up in an indirect way

Now I'm so interested in whether there are any autistic people who use LLMs to help with that. I wish I could ask Aella, she would totally not be offended.

I was also curious and copy-pasted the conversation to GPT-4 and asked it to interpret it, but imo it got it wrong. I'm not sure whether that's surprising or not since I'm not sure how much training data there is on that stuff
