It's just that imgs in sigs make forums suck to read. We've all been there, it's not worth it.
-
Yeah, don't put images in your sig.
Put them in thread instead:

I just turn off sigs entirely; they don't bring anything to the table for me. If you'd like to join me, you can change that in the Look and layout (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?action=profile;area=theme) section of your profile settings. If you love signatures but don't want images in them, you can add the following to your adblock+ filter list:
forum.dominionstrategy.com##div.signature img

Slick workaround with adblock+. I turned off sigs because the images are really annoying.
Got anything to block memes? :P

There is a wonderful feature where you can block the sigs. I haven't seen one in ages. Just go to:
Profile > Modify Profile > Look and Layout > Click "Don't Show Users' Signatures
It is the same page that you can change to messages to see per page to 50 instead of the standard 25 (one of the best things you can do on the forum)
It is a wonderful world to not have to see dancing pokemon.
(And yes I am aware that I have a signature that says something or other... can't remember what though...)
edit: see that amalloy said the same thing. Good on ya! Maybe I'll change my signature to say just that...

If you're going to quote ammaloy, you should really make your sig a quote

And then overlay that quote on an image macro.

I mainly use banners in my sig for forum games I'm in.
-
I think having a strict limit on the size and number of images in signatures would do it.
I'm partial to my little Sandslash, but I guess I wouldn't cry if I couldn't have it.

yea, I actually support this. If there are large pics in the sig, that's annoying.
-
I don't really mind as long as it isn't (much) bigger (in height) than the header that has the post data.
-
And preferably not a gif, though the wind effect isn't that bad. But like the actual video-capture gifs.. that's annoying.
-
There really are no annoying pictures in sigs here. The ittle gifs are fine because you can barely see them. I would prefer if people only had one banner because several starts to take a little too much room, but it's not a big deal.
Was this in reference to a specific sig ?
I disagree that sigs don't add anything though, they've always been one of my favourite feeatures in forums (more so than avatars).

That was what I assumed. And it used to be moving.

Is it problematic if for now we adopt a "report any signatures you find distracting" policy? I agree that that signature in particular is distracting, but I also think that there's value in relatively unobtrusive images in signatures. The forum is not yet sentient, but I am, and if you show me something obnoxious via the (confidential) reporting system I will get it taken care of.
In the meantime I limited both signature image height and font size. They are both fairly generous limits and therefore compliance is not necessarily acceptable, but non-compliance is certainly unacceptable.

@silverspawn: I think if you move your image to the right, like lastfootnote's signature, it would be a lot less distracting because it will not be in the middle of text when reading.

mh. I didn't know anyone thought it was distracting, since it's so small. I don't like it as much at the right though...

But you have better lead room (http://photo.stackexchange.com/questions/11794/what-is-lead-room) by placing it on the right. Much better photographic signature composition.

It's mostly the moving images that are distracting. Static ones, as long as they're small, are fine.

Is mine so bad? I think that the small, simple gifs like we have are fine, especially when floated to the right. But if it's legitimately a problem I can remove them.

I should have clarified. Big moving ones are distracting, as are ones that are not on the right. Those on the right are fine, I hardly see them unless I try to look at them.

I hope my new sig isn't too intrusive for the mods.

Careful, theory might ban you for such a bold move as that.

I doubt it; I think his move is both right and justified.
