Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Another take on "Blood Money"?: Ring of Power
« on: February 06, 2013, 07:07:14 pm »
5/2 is NOT rare. Each player has a one-fourth (ish?) chance of getting a five-two split. Cards need to be balanced based on opening theory. The chance of getting Ring + 4$ is identical to getting $5 in a normal game.

Three cheaper cards is way too strong. Compare develop: it gains just two cards with fixed prices. Probably needs to gain just two, maybe even differently named.

You don't have to buy it in the endgame. You can buy it *instead* of provinces and be immune to greening. Chapel Big Money basically becomes the Golden Deck without Bishop. Cute, though.

Things to maybe try:

Pass the traitor in a direction other than the Curse. The person you pass the Traitor to you would be the one to curse you next. No idea if this is better or worse than passing them the same direction.

Self-trash once the curses are out.

Well, I know how the get the least (0).  ;D

Do it off of a 3/4, I dare thee!

I could do it off of a 3/3.

Be third player. First two players open with masquerade and silver. They pass a silver into your hand before turn two, buy Mandarin.

That doesn't work... they couldn't play Masquerade before your second turn. You could do it with Noble Brigand tricks though.

You're right. The other flaw is that SCCC doesn't stop the reshuffle with Mandarin. Also, if anybody opens NB, you reshuffle turn two. So the best you can do on a 3/4 is one reshuffle.

Feature suggestion: Add a warning for when you're going to be activating a dogma that your opponent has a higher score in (a demand that will fail or dogma that will be shared). It could work just like entering the buy phase with unused actions, buying something with unused treasures, and the resign button.

3)No 2nd player- you are the only person.

Powerman's suggestion breaks "1) Perfect shuffle luck", and was obviously meant to be humorous. My attempt humor was more subtle.

The real question then: With worst shuffle luck, how many turns does it take to hit 5? My first guess is Scheme/Horse Traders opening... maybe 7?

You HT to hit a hand with two coppers or a silver in it. If you play scheme and HT in one turn, you're guaranteed to have two coppers either this turn or next. So worst shuffle luck should be T3 or T4 HT, then T5 scheme (it doesn't matter as long as scheme comes after HT), topdecking itself twice to hit the HT on the bottom of the deck. HT/Scheme gets 8, which seems suboptimal.

So on the 3/4 split, we can guarantee at most 2 shuffles, though it's just a turn away from being 1 shuffle -- maybe something else is faster. Jack guarantees either having 5 or trashing an estate, maybe that helps?

And of course this is all moot because hitting 5 with HT doesn't let you topdeck 5 treasures...

Puzzles and Challenges / Re: Play a Goons and Familiar on Turn 4
« on: January 02, 2013, 05:01:06 pm »
If you are allowed opponents, then it should be possible to play a Goons and a Familiar on turn 2.
Unless I'm mistaken about the passing order of Masquerade:

Supply: Masquerade, Noble Brigand, Remake, Watchtower, Squire, Goons, Familiar, decks start with shelters.

Turn 1
P1: Buy Noble Brigand, discarding two coppers off of everybody's deck.
P2: Buy Masquerade, draw Masquerade in clean-up
P3: Buy Remake, draw Remake in clean-up
P4: Buy Watchtower, draw WT-C-OGE-Hovel-Necropolis in clean-up

Turn 2
P1: do whatever
P2: Play masquerade. P3 passes Remake to P4, P4 passes copper to P1.
P3: do whatever
P4: Has hand of Watchtower-Remake-Shelters, plays Familiar and Goons as per Jim.

Does anybody think we need wiki page pertaining to perfect-shuffle-luck puzzles?

Going into the opening, I knew if he got a potion, then I would go for Embargo. I got lucky, Embargoing Apothecaries before he got to play his potion – he bought one anyway. He ends up with 5 Apothecaries, using Trade Route to trash three of the curses.

Did I get expand too late? I bought it T13, played it T15 and T19 (final turn of the game) for provinces. If I had it earlier, I could have maybe expanded Estate --> Venture.

Was I right to pick up Gold over Venture on T14? I was worried about Ventures skipping my Expand, and also that faster cycling in the green phase is probably bad. Considering my treasure composition, Gold is almost certainly worth more.

I get 4 Venture plays for copper, four for silver, and one for gold – fairly lucky – and barely won. Should the Vineyards player win on this board?

He picks up a province at some point. Is this a mistake for him? He has 3 vineyards worth 4 points at the end of the game; I can't help but think he could have gotten them higher.

Thoughts?

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: 7-cost Victory Card?
« on: December 24, 2012, 03:32:34 pm »
With Develop, Upgrade, and Remake, the effect is the same as other 7-costs. The problem with a 7-cost victory is that it's practically competing with provinces. I bet it would be really really hard to design a card that can fill that slot.

As for a 1-cost, vanilla 1 VP already costs 2. You want a victory card with a drawback? Or that DA card, overgrown estate, which is actually worth 0.

The two wordings of Ghost Ship are functionally different. As written, Horse Traders' reaction is a hard counter. In the "put cards on deck until you have 3 left in hand" version, HT is only a partial counter.

Pilling out on cities is not "showing off"; the duchies would not have won you the game that turn.
