Hi guys, I have some super awesome news that I wanted to share with my online friends (and I'm fully aware of how lamesauce that sounds) and I was looking for the right place to do it. I thought about the Random Stuff thread but then thought, I bet other people have good news they'd like to share sometimes too so...this thread has now been born. I'm thinking fun and exciting things like graduations, new puppies, exciting moves, etc. Super excited to hear about your good stuffs!

I got a job!! Moved and got a job in just a little over a week and I'm thrilled about it!
-
My show opens in 3 nights. I'm part of the ensemble for Big: The Musical. You may think this is a new show. Actually, it's been around for nearly 20 years. Who knew?
Anyway, excited about this because it'll be my first show with some pretty crazy choreography, and I haven't done anything like this before.
And, well, it's Big.
-
Congrats rae!
Kuildeous, do you get to tap dance on a giant piano?
-
Congrats.
I also got a job. Been temping ever since graduating in 2010, looking for someone to take me on permanently. A few permanent jobs came up where I'd been temping for a month and I applied and got one. Today is my second day but so far it's pretty boring. First week is our induction but I've been working there for over a month already so it's pretty pointless from my position, but there are other new people so it makes sense for them. Never mind. It's permanent and I get paid a salary rather than an hourly wage for the first time in forever.
-

Nope, I get to lift the lid off the giant piano for the two to dance on. The original plan was to have a plexiglass piano built that lights up. Best-laid plans and all, but they fell through. So, we have a painted piano. It still looks cool. I imagine that a Broadway budget made the piano really awesome.
-
Well, I started my new job today, but it isn't that exciting since I was already working here during my previous job.
They just liked me so much they decided they wanted to hire me directly instead of paying my previous employer way too much to hire me.

My game's getting published! We got the licensing! Fingers crossed, we'll have a playable demo at GenCon! :D :D :D :D

What is it?
I haven't been keeping up to date in the forums as much. Details, man. I'll be at GenCon.
Oh, and congrats.

It's not officially announced yet, which is why I can only jump up and down with excitement in anonymity currently.

I don't suppose you can give us a really quick blurb about basic mechanics?
Congrats! And also congrats to those of you moving from temp to permanent jobs!

Honestly, at the moment I'm not 100% what's okay to talk about and what's not, because of the licensing. I promise I would love to ramble about it for hours, and as soon as it's officially announced, no one will be able to stop me.
It has dice! And tokens! And spaces! And a rulebook!
Also, once I figure out what booth number it'll be at, I'll put that up also.

Licensing... does that mean it's a game for an existing brand/franchise? Or just generic licensing?
Let's all ask more questions he probably can't answer! :D

It's Dominion: The Catapult!

Still not white. Can see even without quote.
I've seen some forums where you can only see it in a quote.

If I squint I can see it (when not in a quote, of course). But congrats Drab! Make sure to keep us posted (on odd-numbered replies of course)!

Might as well post this here instead of the VLA thread on forum games. But my wife and I are expecting our first child at the beginning of August. We are having a girl. Pretty excited about it.
One name we were seriously considering was "yuma." My wife and I both loved it as the name of the street we were living on--hence my choosing it as my f.ds name--but ultimately I found it kinda weird to give our child a name that I had night killed and lynched people with... (not to mention Saboteuring, Swindling and Torturing.)

Just got a job offer. Kind of came out of nowhere (I was not actively looking for work) but it's a big step up from where I'm at now so I'm really excited for it.

Beat Super Hexagon on all difficulties. Holy shit I'm still on a bit of a rush for beating Hyper Hexagonest.

I just did an IQ test and I'm at 132... That means I'm in ~2.5% of smart people in the population!
-
I was going to put this in the league of legends page(still might) but I hit gold in ranked yesterday.
This means I am back to being one of the top 9% of all league of legends players!(that also play ranked)
-
I wrote a letter to the a newspaper for a Boy Scout requirement and it got published!

Aaaaaand I'm old again. (I earned that merit badge about 20 years ago.)

And, now looking at some replies to the letter online, one person said it gave them hope for the future... It was just a cost/benefit analysis of the government tracking phone calls...

No, I'm Luther Hendricks; Kevin Nunn and I are codesigning this game. He has more name recognition than I do (obviously :p ), so he made the official announcement.

8 unintended deaths, and 1 missed intended death. This time is so solid, that I'm very unsure if I'll ever beat it again.

Oh neat! I didn't realize you were involved with >G.
I'll definitely check this out. I hope the Sentinel bucks combine with the board game too.
-
I'm not 100% sure what the plan is as far as >G promotions go; I'm just a designer. The demo we'll have at Gen-Con doesn't have final art; it's just a gameplay demo at this point.
I'm just excited I can answer questions about the game now! :D

I remember when you told me you were barely able to get under 20 minutes. Also looks like you've been streaming, judging by the Wsplit you have up?
Also...
I just did an IQ test and I'm at 132... That means I'm in ~2.5% of smart people in the population!
Since I don't have much else to brag about at the moment, IQ of 157 here, which is, what, top one in 5.4K (assuming normal distribution with mean of 100 and SD of 16)? I expect high IQs to be pretty commonplace here, but probably only a small handful would beat that. And as one of the top ones I'll be the first to say it: IQ measures your ability to do well in IQ tests and not really a lot else. At least IQ tests are pretty consistent with themselves... (I've gotten a 156 and a 157 over the two tests I've done)

Indeed, IQ tests don't really measure anything directly except how well you do on those tests. The only time I took a properly administered IQ test, I was at 155, which was also the highest possible score; that test basically said "We don't measure past four nines, what would be the point?"
So, sure, I can claim being in the top 0.01%--that and a dollar gets you a cup of coffee. (Yes, it also gets you into a ton of special schooling programs if you want them. And much more likely to get significant scholarships since IQ tests correlate with achievement tests. But both of those are essentially the product of using that intelligence.)
Note that none of this stuff correlates directly with success, wealth, power, or happiness.

Got an interview tomorrow for a new position within the company which I kinda knew was in the pipeline when I took my current position. It's related to what I was doing previously when I was temping, but a bit more involved and permanent and a has higher salary than my current job. I (and they) knew I'd be applying for this once it happened, but they told me to take the other job anyway in case this didn't happen. It's been advertised internally and we're a pretty small company, so I'm fairly certain I'm the only one who's applied and it's looking good. Watch this space for confirmation of bragging.

I've been recording, but I haven't been streaming. It slows down my game just slightly (around 90-95% of normal speed), but it's enough to make all my muscle memory just a bit off.

McDonald's has $1 any size coffee, an it's the same coffee that is sold at Starbucks.
-
He could also just be making his own. I get espresso at work basically for free because I have an aeropress on my desk.
This didn't start out as a brag post but I guess "I get free espresso" qualifies.

Drip, maybe. But I think we know no one here drinks drip.

Confirming this brag. All of a sudden the last three years of feeling like I'm worthless don't matter anymore. I've made it.

Nope. Not gonna believe it.

I just got upgraded from student employee to "graduate research assistant" at my university, which means a nice new salaried pay rate and a tuition waiver. So now I don't need to take any loans for grad school*.
Also, 1000th post :)
* technically I'm in the "concurrent BS/MS program", meaning I'll get both degrees at the same time. Also I was a math major at a different school for 3 years before transferring and switching to computer science, but this is my fifth year of college, first semester with any grad courses, so I guess I should just call it grad school now.

Day 4 of having Google Fiber. It's pretty sweet. Getting used to a couple of features missing, but that's just the effect of change. So far the positives outweigh the negatives. Aw yeah.
-
Ran my first ever race yesterday: I finished a 10K in 0:52:57. Three months ago I couldn't even run half a mile without stopping.

Congrats. Did you follow a particular training program? I'm trying to work my way up to a 30 minute 5K right now; using the Couch-to-5K app. Like you, when I started I couldn't run a half-mile. But I'm definitely struggling to get past a particular set.

Mostly getting used to the new setup. The negatives have been pretty minor so far.
No clock on the cable box so I actually have to buy an additional clock in case our phones are more than 3 feet away.
There is no AMC in our lineup, since it's owned by Time Warner
When I fast-forward through a commercial and press play, it doesn't jump back a few seconds to account for the timing of when I see the commercial break ending.
There is no TV on demand like what Time Warner had.
Mostly, there were features that TWC had that I miss, but I'm coping with the losses.
Also, the speed is not nearly as blazing as one might hope. I expected this, actually. I read some articles about how Fiber does allow for data transfer of 1 GB/sec, but today's hardware limitations don't really allow that. I still have to contend with other servers (and since Kansas City is currently the only place with Fiber, I can expect slower speeds in most of my browsing). It's still faster, though, just not reaching that 1 GB number (yet). I like to think of it as paving the way for the future.

So, slightly reverse topic.
I work for a large multinational company. And each month they send out lists of 'Things to Brag about' which are highlights of the company and upcoming projects.
Just seen one from several months ago.
"CGI is proud to be one of the leading suppliers of the new Medicare Website"

Reminds me of the time we sent out all our Christmas cards with the Beagle Mars rover on it that we helped program...only for it to be lost on landing...

I also did C25K, and I think I know which set you're talking about: that first time you have to run 20 minutes continuously. I didn't think I could do it either, and I gave up once or twice. But I trusted my body and just pushed through with force of will, and now running 20 minutes is nothing at all.

I love hearing stuff like this. I hear so many people say things regarding there inability to run but so much of it is solely based off of them not doing it before. As long as you have the proper mindset and dedication you can prepare yourself for most any type of running race.
Go for the half marathon next theory!

As someone who consistently fluctuates in and out of shape, I mostly agree. When you just start out running, though, you really get winded fast. The bright side is that it doesn't take long to improve by a huge amount.
-
Guess what, guys! I'm not dead yet!

from not running at all up to a half marathon in a few months? wow.

Immensely proud of myself today.
Helped organise a concert for my charity.
Filled a church hall with 300+ people, and a proper military orchestra playing oldie songs, film scores and the like.
Went off extremely well. Reckon we probably made over £3000

This weekend we played two Swedish National Championships of a game called The Spoils (http://www.thespoils.com/spoils/view.php?pg=home). It's a TCG similar to Magic The Gathering, so the two championships were Limited (where you build a deck from a pool of random cards, then top 8 drafts for the playoffs) and Constructed. While I failed miserably at Constructed during the quarter finals, I managed to win the Limited Championship. Even though there were only 15 players, I feel like bragging about it a bit. ;)

There might have been only 15 players, but consider the following: the rest of Sweden was so scared of your skills that they didn't even bother showing up!
Congratulations.

Actually nobody outside of Stockholm decided to come. It was a pity. A really fun event, though. :)

If you use 'real origami paper', the holes at the top of the triangles shouldn't be there. I used some construction paper, but it didn't turn out as nice as it would have if I had used thinner paper instead.

I was in an Auberge in Quebec once. We were asked what we wanted for breakfast, followed by a list of options. It also sounded good, so we kept saying "Oui".
Too bad we ended up only getting the last item from the list, which was very dark toast with loads of butter on it.

You certainly don't need a recipe; you just use 3.14 tablespoons of everything.

Yesterday I came home from dinner to find 20 people waiting in my apartment for a surprise birthday party. Just having friends like these feels like such a blessing and definitely bragworthy. I guess I must have done some things in life real well to be surrounded with people like this now!

On Isotropish yes, not on Goko, where I just grabbed the #10 spot. ;D
I just don't play that often anymore, certainly not often enough to keep a good Isotropish rating. Goko is a little more forgiving and you can keep a good rating there with no more than 1 game a day on average, as I tend to do. Heck, I don't even own any sets, I just join whatever random game seems interesting, even if it's a casual game.
But lately, it seems like I just can't lose a game on Goko. ??? Which is of course due to a pretty good combination of luck and skill, I just don't know which part's luck and which is skill. ;D
In any case, I never considered myself a "pro" player, even if I did win that Dutch championship 2 years ago and can keep a decent rating. I just don't take a "pro" approach to the game. I don't play high level players exclusively and I'm not just looking to increase my rating. I'm just looking for fun games with fun people. Maybe that laidback approach is why my rating has increased over the last weeks. I don't care if I'm top 10 or top 100. Of course I'd rather be the former than the latter and I always try to win, but I also try to take a more healthy approach to the game.
Some time ago before Goko I took a couple of months timeout, because I was playig too compulsively. Now I can just play a few games to relax and have some fun and don't worry too much about it. My family is not suffering from my playing, my work is not suffering and those are way more important to me than this silly game we call Dominion.
I consider myself a competitive player and think I can hold my own against anyone and that's good enough for me.

Well the "graduate college too" was implied, as it was clearly the target. As for 'me' vs. 'I am', maybe he's majoring in caveman linguistics! Does caveman grammar count as bad grammar if it's internally consistent?

yeah, same way in Canada (at least parts of it). You have to make sure to say "university" otherwise people will look down on you...

I just did a search (http://www.schools.nsw.edu.au/schoolfind/locator/) for schools in NSW called a college, and going very quickly through them it looks like a lot of them are existing High Schools that have banded together into "collegiates", or are closely associated with tertiary institutions. I suspect many of these are fairly recent developments, too, which would be why I'm not familiar with them.

Makes sense. I was thinking of Brigidine College and Moriah College as two quick examples.

In the UK, secondary school is 5 years after which you used to be allowed to leave, followed by two years of "sixth form". A sixth form not attached to a school is a college. They will typically, but not exclusively, have more of a vocational focus.
A college can also be one of the 20+ institutions making up the Universities of Oxford or Cambridge, or the name of a faculty/department ("College of Physical Sciences").

Nice! It's the first mile that's the hardest. As someone who makes running a regular part of my life the hardest thing about running is not actually the running. It's getting out to do the running. Keep it up Gendo!

He thought I meant it was a restaurant that just served generic "African" food. Most African restaurants will be West African or Ethiopian or Eritrean or whatever.

I hope you put it into an index fund?
My remaining problem with index funds is that I would be taking profits from tobacco companies and arms dealers. Screening those out tends to push you into the arms of active managers. It's been a while since I investigated this though, so perhaps it's time for me to have another go.

My account says it is a mutual fund Roth IRA, which I assume is different than an index fund, but I really don't know very much at all about these things. The guy on the other end just asked on a scale of 1-6 how much risk I was willing to take, and I told him 6. I can always downgrade the risk in later years as life circumstances change. And I plan on contributing the max every year.

Funny. I literally know someone who runs a fund creating "ethical indices" with minimal cost. I think it's silly but clearly my view is not universal.

Roth IRA just means a type of account, the same way that checking accounts and savings accounts are different. Index fund refers to where the money is going. Are you investing with some person? Are you paying a lot for their services? In general the most efficient investing strategy is to dumbly put your funds in the market, instead of paying extra to have someone try to beat the market for you. No one beats the market in the long term, and so maximizing your return is really all about minimizing your fees.

The very rough idea is that most fund managers will try and guess which stocks will outperform and invest in those. An index fund will buy stocks in proportions corresponding to the index you want to track (something like the FTSE 100, or the Dow Jones Industrial Average). Since most managers do no better than random guessing, but incur extra charges whenever they make a trade, index funds are generally reckoned to be a much cheaper route to equal returns. Definitely do some reading: it could make a world of difference over 40 years.

Awesome! Roth IRAs are a ridiculous lifehack, and if you can afford one you should keep contributing the max each year.
I hope you put it into an index fund?
My account says it is a mutual fund Roth IRA, which I assume is different than an index fund, but I really don't know very much at all about these things. The guy on the other end just asked on a scale of 1-6 how much risk I was willing to take, and I told him 6. I can always downgrade the risk in later years as life circumstances change. And I plan on contributing the max every year.
I am not paying anyone for the account. My bank will manage it for me at no additional cost.
That being said, I will definitely do some more research into it, and will be able to adjust how the funds are allocated within the IRA fund over time. The important part that I got from my conversation is that you can only add so much money per year, so even if the funds are not performing at maximum potential, it is still very important to at least get it started because you can't catch up later.

Should I buy the sets on goko do you reckon?
If you plan on playing a lot, yeah. It's not as bad as you think. I mean, there's lots of problems, but I always seem to be able to play when I want and games go pretty smoothly.

Sometimes you get to play against some really pleasant people, too!
-
Should I buy the sets on goko do you reckon?
no, I've played quite a few games on goko, and I can almost always get a game with someone who has cards.
-
Yeah. I have just two expansions, and usually I get to play with all of the expansions. I still think that buying them was worth it for those situations where I'm playing against someone with no cards, it's significantly more interesting than just base and only somewhat less interesting than all cards.

Even though there were only 15 players, I feel like bragging about it a bit. ;)
This year we only had Constructed Nationals, but I won that one!

Should I buy the sets on goko do you reckon?
I reckon you should buy them then brag about it...on the brag board...it's for bragging. (all of them is the answer to your question though)

I'm bragging about this even though I didn't have anything directly to do with the component production. I'm a bragging fiend!

8 respect for a 1 word post!
Nah just kidding. I was curious how much respect I could get without giving any details. I've now got a full time job starting in September, working as a TA (Teaching Assistant), mostly with Maths/Physics, in a respected school. Which I'm pretty happy about.

Ok. Short tale of Team Fortress 2 Revenge here.
Spy is probably my all-time favorite class, and I was having a ton of fun playing Sawmill--even making it to the top of my team.
Then two enemies started talking about how spies can't carry a team and how we were noobs (true, I see too many spies on teams a lot, but our team only had 2 at that time, including myself).
Anyway, I got the perfect chance as the two enemy team members who had been chatting were right next to each other (this is later, so they weren't AFK or anything--they were actually on their way to try and spawncamp) and I managed to backstab both the soldier and the heavy. ;D
Here's a screenshot from the game. IDK, it just makes me happy because I'm not the best at a lot of different games, but I feel pretty confident with TF2.

I used to play TF2 really seriously. Played Engi on a Highlander team and Demo on a 6v6 team. How I miss it ...

I have just been cast in a local production of Jekyll & Hyde. I get to play a pompous surgeon and Hyde #2. That last part may sound strange, but this show is interesting in that the actor playing Jekyll never plays Hyde. Four of the other actors each play a different personality of Hyde. Hyde #2 is not the super-scary brutal Hyde, but I look forward to wearing this mask.
My first show since my year-long hiatus and my first nonmusical in about 4 years. I believe that And Then There Were None was my last dramatic performance.

I'm auditioning for Music Man soon! In a bit less than a month. Maybe I'll say what part I get here.

I got a promotion!! :D
...for a job I'm starting on Monday. Yes. They called me today to tell me they're moving me into the position above the one they initially offered me!
(Also, just having a job after several months of searching is extremely exciting in itself. :))

Well again, first job after searching for months, etc. I wasn't gonna turn down much. :P Although I did turn down a sales position earlier in the summer and fully stand by that choice.
Basically, I'm entering a pretty large and established department in a company. There's a hierarchy that (unless you have a fair amount of experience) you're slotted into, with the chance to move up after as little as a few months or as much as a couple years. They moved me into that second position directly.
I think it was some combination of good timing on my part, need on their part, a strong interview/resume, and a pretty good score on their entrance competency exam (the Wonderlic test, if you're familiar with it. I got a 39, which I was inwardly appalled by, but they were pretty impressed).

Yeah I mean, all of us could tell where this was going, you two were the only ones that still denied it. The sexual tension was palpable since whenever the Montreal meetup happened.
The only question left is: are you going to adopt Markusin?

Yesterday I won a local chess tournament with 6 out of 6. Which isn't actually all that impressive when you see that my break-even score against the field I faced was 5.31, but I was happy with the way I played in all six games. Which doesn't happen very often.

Awesome groomsmen have awesome tie knots.
-
Not of fan of all those crazy knots. They just look kinda ridiculous.
-
Funny, the groomsmen split 2-2 on that front. Two Windsors + two Eldredges (and the groom was in the middle with a Trinity). If I'm going to be spoiling a tux with a notch lapel and a long tie (matching the bridesmaids), I'd much rather wear an unusual knot instead of a standard knot.
-
Yeah I don't understand the tux and tie combo. Shouldn't you always wear a bowtie with a tux?
-
That's what I said :(
It's OK though, it's still by far the best wedding I've ever been to excluding my own. It was my college best friend and so I'm probably somewhat biased, but the weather was incredible (crisp and cool), the ceremony was touching, we picked out nice entrance music for ourselves, and the processional march was from the Final Fantasy X soundtrack.
-
Oh and you suck theory.
-
I'm kidding. You and your tux and your tie and your knot are awesome. <3
-
Is "awesome knot" the technical term for that knot?
-
the processional march was from the Final Fantasy X soundtrack.
This was the processional march for my wedding:

An update on my running... a few months ago I posted that I just ran a mile for the first time since I was kid. Well now I'm doing 5K at a stretch. Not fulling running the entire way; still intervals with some fast walking. Did 5K in 36:40 tonight!

How's that for a cheap attempt at +1s.

I SSed Giga Difficult on Dustforce and got the 100% achievement!
Since releasing the game, the developers have added 7 other levels that don't count for the achievement, and I've only beaten one of those...but right now I don't really care.
-
I just beat the world record on Cat Planet (http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-16/?action=preview&uid=1081)!
It's a pretty excellent little game. You can download it and you can probably play it through on the first try in under half an hour. I just did it in 4:24, one second faster than the old record of 4:25 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ONCLT2q5VM) and two seconds faster than my previous record.
Unfortunately, I'm not sure how many people have actually tried to speedrun this game...
I recorded the run, but it's not very high quality.

I grew a beard....does that count as a brag?
I hate it though.

Is it a world record beard?

Don't worry, it's December so you can shave it off now.

No, many countries do Jan/Feb- December school years, for instance Australia (and it would appear Finland also).
-
The school year begins in the fall/late summer and ends in the spring/early summer in Finland, but the matriculation exams are every fall and every spring and if you complete them in the fall, you graduate from high school in December. This is unusual in regular high schools, but it happens, and I studied in a high school specializing in music and art so it happens a bit more there.

I'm planning on studying English translation, because it would make me better at speaking both English and Finnish, I could study another language on the side which is generally very useful, translating things is super interesting, it would feel like I'm doing something useful if I'm making some books or movies or whatever available for a larger audience, I would get to spend time with the works I'm translating, and it's also a profession that would give me a lot of freedom with any potential band projects that I might have. And just in case I happen to change my mind later, having studied languages is never a waste.

I don't know if there's much difference between the swedish and finnish translation market, but in Sweden, if you're a translator, you'll mainly translate instruction booklets and stuff like that.

I'm not entirely sure myself, but I think it also depends on the language. In any case, translating instruction booklets would still be pretty cool, I just hope that I don't have to become an interpreter.

I graduated university!

God, you're a young one too?
Congratulations, man. That is outstanding, and it is good to see your name again. Gonna stick around?

I placed first in the University of Maryland High School Mathematics Competition, which means that I get a full tuition scholarship to University of Maryland, as well as $500.
More importantly, however, my friend (who got second) and I have ended Montgomery Blair High School's total dominance of the competition. It has been 15 years since my school had anybody place in the top 3, and Blair has had a student in the top 3 every year (even this year). Anyway I am pretty excited about this.
-
Woah - unrelated, but my school lost to Blair at the national science bowl finals. I've just started math competitions recently too, but I'm nowhere near that level, congrats. I'm just hoping for top 100 at the michigan competition.

I don't think my school does math competitions (or, at least, I haven't heard anything about it), but they sound interesting. What exactly do you do in them?

There is some variety, but most of the time you just sit and take a math test for a while, except the problems are way more fun than the math tests you take at school. Sometimes they are written tests and sometimes they are multiple choice or short answer. Usually the problems are based on "classical math" like algebra, geometry, combinatorics, or number theory and are designed so that all you need is cleverness to solve them, rather than knowledge of advanced calculus. Extra knowledge can never hurt though. A few competitions are a little more exciting and are live or have team rounds or other exciting things.
If you are interested in trying them, I would suggest that you ask if your school offers the AMC 12, or see if it is offered at a local university. Also you should look into the Idaho ARML (American Regions Math League) team and see if you can join it, because ARML is a lot of fun and you get to meet a lot of people who like math competitions.
You can find a lot of information and problems from past competitions at http://www.artofproblemsolving.com/.
Most of the problems posted in the maths thread could be competition problems or are competition problems.

I watched a couple of the AMC videos and they're a bit over my head, but still pretty cool. I'll talk to my math teacher about the competitions when I get back to school and do a bit more digging to see if I'm math-y enough to do it. Thanks for the help!
-
If you like mathematics then I would encourage you to give the competitions a go. From my own experience I suspect that you will get more out of them if you know a group of people with similar interests or have somebody who can teach you some of the standard tricks for solving the problems.
But if you think mathematics research might be your future and find you aren't great at the competitions, don't let it worry you, as the skills they require are different—research is about making progress on things that people have never considered before, rather than finding a clever solution planted by the setter. I was never very good at later rounds of the competitions, but am now a professional mathematician, and lots of the people I know who came up through the Olympiad system have now found themselves a proper job instead!

You got a young woman for Christmas? That's what I wished for!

Yeah yeah, course you did Wither.... We all know it was a Lego Space Rocket with realistic flashing lights and laser sounds.
Also, am now slightly impressed by the ear phones..... Of course As much as someone who still uses the standard apple earphones that comes with an iPod can be .

Yes. You found out my secret identity. I am actually a pair of headphones.
@Ozle: What happened was I asked the salesperson at an audio gear store what he thought were the best studio headphones that didn't cost like a thousand dollars. Then I passed the exact brand name and stuff on to Santa my parents. I really can't wait to use them when I get back to my apartment... something tells me I won't be able to leave my computer.

A bit jealous really. I don't even have my old ear buds because they were "ungifted". Music now has to come from my CDs, which aren't portable in any convenient way. Which reminds me, I need to buy earphones before term because animating without music might kill me (although I would concentrate better and have a better quality of work. But who needs that right?)

I think someone needs to play Amnesia, Slender, or Dead Space with those headphones... in a basement... at 2am... alone...

Maybe my view of Dead Space is a bit skewed. I played it in a movie theater on a 30+ foot wide screen. There were definitely some parts that seemed overwhelming.

Some parts, like the regenerating boss, can be overwhelming. The Evil Within starves you a lot more for resources and presents a lot of situations where you need to really use things you have carefully. It adds a level of scare with the fear of running out of everything at the wrong time.

Well think about turning it so it would be facing down and the flat side forward. It would clearly have to be to your left.

Also, because I own the right-handed version of these clubs and reversed the image then overlayed the logo to make it a left-handed version.
I also never realized facebook stored images that large. :o

It was about how something should be moved to RSP because of something about DG's avatar. But you were joking.

How did you look that up? By going to my profile page, and looking at recent posts? I thought of that, but I didn't try it to see if it would work for me on my own posts.

I played Dominion: Adventures today (and yesterday). Also played my first ever game of Temporum with the unreleased expansion.

I made an expansion for Temporum, but whether or not it comes out will depend on how well the game does and stuff.
I checked first to make sure I wasn't spoiling anything.

Donald said on BGG that whether or not it gets released depends on Temporum sales. So if you haven't done so, buy Temporum!

You assume that means there aren't any new Treasures. Which there aren't. Or might be. You'll see in... soon!

Hey!
I've been a metalhead since like 12 years old, me being 26 now it's quite a long time.
I've had my long hair since 14 or something. It was so cool to come into the very mosh pit and to do all the crazy stuff!
And well, nothing to brag about really, but I just cut my hair off today, for no reason. And somehow I feel really good about it!

Just had one of my games (http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=93030498&result=1) greenlit on Steam. Sadly, it's nowhere near complete and I'd feel odd about releasing it there early access, but in the future I may put it up there. Nice.

Her mom will teach her to never pay full price.

A woman doesn't need to be able to count the money she is spending to be able to spend it all (even when paying less than full price).

I'm 3.5 weeks post-op, and have now been cleared to start hitting balls again on the pickleball court. In another 10 days, I hope to be back actually playing. Man it felt good to get back to it (at least a little) this morning.

Looked it up, there's integrals and differentials too. Most people when they hear "binomial theorem" probably think it's much more complicated than it is too. I hadn't heard it called that until this year.

I'm very well acquainted too with matters mathematical
I understand equations, both the simple and quadratical
About binomial theorem I am teeming with a lot o' news

Well, this will seem very humble to all of you guys, but I scored 100 points for what I think is the first time in Dominion, on HF today, against Serf Bot, using base cards only. I suppose it's possible I did it once on isotropic, but I don't remember it.

I was really stressed about this because I was really careless on the second qualifying exam, but it turns out I squeaked by anyway.
Awesome! This is my goal next year. My index this year was 184.5 (AMC 10), and I was able to solve enough problems that if I hadn't made simple errors on any then my index would have been 216.5, which would be enough for USAJMO. However, it wouldn't be realistic to not make any silly mistakes, so the plan is to solve more problems next year!

I qualified for the USA Math Olympiad!
If only there were more questions involving hand probabilities and Watchtower.
Aaaand now I have a problem to think about for a while. In a deck with necropolises, watchtowers, and confusions, what is the probability that I can draw it all in terms of the number of each card?
I'm confused as to what the point of drawing it all would be, unfortunately.

If you have 7 confusions, the probability is 0. Now that I have done the hard part, I am sure that you can finish it off :) .
-
6 confusions: The bottom card must be a confusion, and I cannot at any point have 1 action, a watchtower in hand, and non-confusion cards left in my deck, nor can I have a hand without watchtowers and cards left in my deck.
Given 0 Watchtowers, the probability is 0.
Given 1 Watchtower, I must draw the watchtower and all necropolises in my starting hand. If you choose b elements from a set of size a, the probability that it contains c specific elements is (a - c) choose (b - c) divided by a choose b. a = 7 + n, b = 5, c = 1 + n. Now we have that 6 choose (4 - n) divided by (7 + n) choose 5 is the probability that we draw our deck with one watchtower, 6 confusions, and n necropolises.
Given 2 Watchtowers, there have to be 1 to 9 necropolises in my deck for there to be a positive probability, and well... this is not so simple. I'm not even sure what the optimal number of necros is, two? That's another interesting question. Gut says you want roughly the same number of necros as watchtowers, in general.
For 6 confusions, for the probability to be positive we have w - 1 <= n <= 5w - 1, w > 0.
Wow, this got off topic fast. I'll, uh, pass the problem back to heron now...

If you have festival instead of Necropolis and Gold instead of confusion, how many golds is optimal in a deck with Max ten of the other cards in terms of buying points?

Darn I only got like 14 points (rip IMO dream).
I really should have been able to solve all problems on day 1 (or at least 2 of them) but I did not have my wits about me and got trolled by #1 for almost 4 hours. And then I didn't have time to complex bash #2.
Then day 2 was really hard. #5 basically impossible. #6 wasn't too hard but I wasted too much time trying #5 because I thought that the test writers wouldn't make #6 way easier than #5. Darn. At least I got #4 in a half hour though.
#1 wasn't even hard, you just like apply the quadratic formula basically. I am sad now :'(.
-
How old are you who have taken this test? I'm just curious about something.

Maths tests tend to be very simple once you make one significant insight at the beginning, and basically impossible otherwise. What sucks about these is that if you start down the wrong path, you're generally never going to solve the problem. But, hey, they're supposed to be tough.
Have you taken the Putnam?
-

I am a junior in high school / 17 years old, so I have one more year to take the olympiad, but I will never get to go to the olympiad training camp or be on the IMO team.

The most annoying thing is that this wasn't really my problem on the first day. On #1, I fumbled around with mods for a little bit without going anywhere, but I figured out to use a substitution and the quadratic formula in under an hour I think. The issue was, I need to figure out when the radicand would be a perfect square, which was tricky because the radicand was a cubic polynomial. The issue was that for some reason, I thought that it didn't factor until the very end of the test, when I noticed that it had a perfect square factor, which of course made the problem much easier.
Also no, I haven't taken the Putnam, although I do use it as practice sometimes. I'll take it when I'm in college I guess.
For the curious, here are the problems: http://www.artofproblemsolving.com/community/c70921_2015_usamo

When I took my written qualifying exams, I plowed through Day 1 and missed only a minor amount of points (say, 2-5 of 60 or so). On day 2, there was this conformal mapping problem (complex variables stuff), and I just did everything wrong on it because I forgot something basic (which I don't remember now). The result was me spending almost all the time doing Problem 1 correctly, because what I was trying to do involved waaaaaay too much computation, so that I didn't have sufficient time to think about the other problems. I ended up with like 50-60% for that day :( I was actually lucky to have passed.
The Putnam exam is famous for having those "if you see it" type of problems. The median score is 0 (out of 120 or so).

I just ran 15 kilometers! Whee, I'm pretty sure it was the first time I've done more than 10. I went super slow (1.39 for the 15km), but happy all the same! I think this was my 3rd time going running this year, so I was legitimately worried it might get super hard.
Background information that's somewhat relevant for this board:
We've started spicing our board game nights up by adding penalties to the loser(s) of the games. Having to run 15 kilometers was one of the punishments I've lost. We try to make the punishments things you wouldn't usually do, but that are still generally good for you, such as doing sports, having to go to yoga, having to learn to cook a new dish, something like that. We usually come up with several, and the 2nd place gets to pick one he hates doing the least, 3rd place picks next and so on until the last place is just left with whatever is in there. It's so so much fun.

I've been a lot less active here at F.DS lately for mostly personal reasons involving grad school challenges and a very lengthy and stressful job search. I am happy to say that I just got offered a job as a scientist at a local start-up company involved in the development of Li-ion battery anode materials. As the lone applicant with a master's degree I was able to distinguish myself from the other 100 Ph.D applicants and get offered a job after only a single phone interview and followup email!

Can you get engaged if you can't actually marry? Because the answer to this is the same answer as the one to the question whether i got engaged yesterday. I'm still overwhelmed, happy, anxious and maybe a bit sad, because the inherent caveat reminds me of where i stand in Germany. Well, we hope for change to come soon. There's a second-class institution for us here, but let's just say that we're not that desperate.

Are there legal benefits to getting married in Germany (like tax breaks)? Congrats by the way!

Yes, there are. There isn't really a difference between actual marriage and the alternative i was talking about, though, so from a tax point of view, it would be the same. In fact, most of the differences don't really apply to me (adoption isn't something i think about), so it's mostly the "seperate but equal" thing that makes me feel i don't want it.
Either way, thank you very much :)

Assuming ones true talent level is higher than the systems starting level you would expect an initial winning record as the system adjusts to your play. Thus you'd expect over many games to approach a 1:1 win rate from above.

As this kind of thing isn't exactly common practice where i live (although it sounds cool), i first misunderstood this and thought you were going to some College Contest representing your actual country, the Holy Sea. It was a really weird moment and i got it only after checking your profile and reading this again.
What kind of model is this? Were you impressive because you did a good job reflecting reality or because you argued/neotiated well? And the most important question, will you be wearing a soutane?

It's a group of 50 or so kids who each take on a country to portray in the same way the representative of that country would act during a UN meeting. There are different groups for different issues, my committee will be focusing on violence againsg women and preservation of cultural heritage. I'm really not sure why I got picked. I think I was a good public speaker during the conference in October and I do very well in school. Unfortunately, wearing a soutane and asking people to call me 'Archbishop' won't fly, I already checked.

Finally I'm ranked above Stef. #9, whoo!
-
I ranked third in the North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad, which means I'll be one of eight students representing the United States at the international linguistics olympiad this year!
The contest is in India, so this also means I get a free weeklong trip to India this summer!
:D

Played Texas Hold 'Em for the first time this past weekend and won $35. Game isn't that hard when people decide to heavily bluff when you have Straights and 4 of a Kinds...

Aww. I got 19th a few years ago. Now my best brag is gone.
(congrats! :))
Also, you should come study at CMU - we have great Computational Linguistics - in fact, the Language Technologies Institute is here (it's where NACLO is run from), and the CS classes are well taught and small enough you'll be able to do really well. It combines world-level professors with a classroom small enough that if you do well in the classes you can get into research very quickly. I'm a slightly-above-average student, and I got an internship at the LTI within less than a week from asking a professor.

NACLO is something I wish I knew about in high school, because it looks like a great excuse to solve logic puzzles. Alas, that ship has sailed.
Speaking of which, Putnam results came out today...and I didn't make top 500, one of my solutions must not have been rigorous enough. Oh well.

I don't have anything to brag about, but I happened to see this post and couldn't agree more with it.
I play Hold 'Em casually with a group of friends every once in a while, and I never fail to take them to the cleaners (okay, maybe I DO have something to brag about). They don't seem to understand that you have to be better than they are for bluffing to work successfully on the whole - I just play the odds.
-
I took NACLO too, but I didn't even make the second round (barely). Definitely a lot of fun though, and that's very impressive!

If you were above the 60th percentile, you probably scored at least a point.

Got 11. My guess is A1 correct, 1 point on B1 because I had the right idea, and 0 on the rest. Cutoff for top 500 was 13.
This year was a legendary 0 median year, so my score isn't that awful, but I made top 500 the last 3 years. Was hoping I could get there for all 4.
-
That's pretty good. I think I only scored points one time I took it, and I got like less than 10. Though I'm not even certain there.

I was waitlisted at CMU. Although apparently if I go on the priority waitlist, I would have a pretty good chance of getting in. It's so expensive though, especially compared to going to university of maryland for free.
But since we are talking about CMU, I might as well brag some more: CMU hosted a math contest last saturday, and I won the combinatorics round and placed second at the computer science round!

Don't know where else to post this, so it might aswell go in here:
Yesterday, I placed second in the German offline Dominion Championship. I'm still a bit salty about losing the finals, since the competition wasn't too stiff. All the German Dominion overlords of f.ds who beat me up regularly weren't there. But hey, I won some (duplicate) expansions :) Any Germans around here who still need Intrigue, Seaside or Adventures?
Besides some funny plays, here is the funniest thing about the tournament: The marketing team of ASS (German publisher) decided that it is a good PR move to play with rules THAT THEY MISSPRINT instead of using the official ones. For example, you had to discard your Province to block someone elses tournament, as if Tournament wasn't strong enough. Hilarious stuff.

Exciting weekend news for me. My wife and I can now be considered proud parents!
We brought home our little Napoleon last friday and have had a wonderful first weekend together.
There's just something endearing about seeing a cute little 7 week old Vizsla puppy rolling around in the grass looking up at you with a playful expression. :)

Since there is a place for bragging, I hit a new record of 300lbs for squat yesterday, and managed five sets of five reps to boot. And my progressive workout increases the weight as long as I can complete five sets of five, so every workout will be a personal best as long as I can keep making them.
My big milestone goal is 315, which I can hopefully get to in another week, but I don't want to rush progress.
I didn't feel great about my form, but l still lifted it. I do get low, but sometimes I feel an imbalance pushing up (right leg much stronger than left leg).
I was also able to do 285 deadlift, but only one rep. I think I could have managed more, but the gym was closing and I felt like I was really rushing, which could lead to an injury.
My bench press and overhead press (standing) still suck though :/
-
I'd like to try stronglift too, but I am super scared that I will break something important on the deadlift/squat without an experienced spotter... Are you supervised?
Congrats!

No. Look up Stronglifts 5x5. You start out at half your max (or just bar with no weights) and increase 5 lbs a workout. So you can build up and focus on form. It doesn't take long to build up to heavy.
I got a belt to use for greater than 275 squat/deadlift to be safe (and I've also had back issues from before).
-
Yes, but without supervision, how do you know whether you have proper form? Starting with lower weights only helps assuming you know what proper form is supposed to look like, otherwise you are just delaying the injury.
-
I'm currently working in my first job as a freelance storyteller for a video game. Also, my very own game (made with a friend) will be featured as a demo in a Virtual Reality showroom for a german boardgame publisher. And i'm still working on a boardgame with a friend, where we finally got to the phase of only individual card fixes and flavour changes, and are now looking for artists. And finally, there is nothing else going incredibly wrong, so i can really enjoy it.

Well, there are extensive videos, pictures, explanations that tell you how to do it. Usually gyms have mirrors. You can always ask people that look experienced, as well. And you can take video of yourself.
Doing all that at low weight means you won't get hurt while learning.

Which? The first i am legally bound to not talk about, sorry.
The second is a puzzle game where you save robots in a deadly factory using only one button and your brains.
The third is a euro-game about ancient gods, which i also feel i can't say too much about. It uses a novel yet easy mechanic to play cards. And no, it's not a deck builder.
-
If i wanted to play Virtual Reality Dominion, i would launch Tabletop Simulator and put on the Oculus i borrowed, although it's not as much fun as real Dominion. It's the other way around with my game, as that one is much more fun than actually working in a deadly factory.

My first tennis match us tomorrow and I'm playing three singles, which means (on paper) I'm the third best player on the team. Since I'm a freshman, it's a pretty exciting achievement!

Yesterday, I got to fire a real M72A5 LAW anti-tank rocket. Today, I got to fire an APILAS (although the APILAS was with a training rocket). For the record, extremely few people get to do either of these things during the military training in Finland, and both of these things are indescribably amazing experiences.

would you say that experience is more fun or less fun than, hypothetically, shooting memes from a memegun

So update to my lifting posts, I got up to (units pounds):
squat: 355
deadlift: 315 (maybe 1 rep of 325)
bench press: 190
overhead press: 115
barbell row: 155
This was about three to four weeks ago. I was too heavy though. I got up to 225 pounds and decided I had to drop. So three and a half weeks ago I started tracking my calories (never done that before), and I've lost about 15--17 pounds since then by capping my intake at ~2000. I was really surprised it dropped so quickly. (It's also a lot more than is generally recommended, but oh well.). I've never really restricted my diet before, just tried to not eat to unhealthily.
I've also been eating more protein for breakfast (eggs) and no cereal. I feel a lot better throughout the day.
Edit: Oh also, like two inches off waist measurement, which is a bit better gauge then weight. (Some weight lost is certainly muscle. My lifts have all gone down by a bit.)
-
That's really impressive!
How long have you been lifting? How much did you weight before you started?
-
That's really impressive!

I've been doing squats for quite a while, over five years. I had done deadlifts occasionally in that time frame, along with various other things, but no regular regimen. I didn't get 'serious' about a program until around six months ago. (June 8 was the first day I started the new lifting program.) Before the program I would squat up to 225 lbs (two plates on each side of the bar), and occasionally go up to ~20 lbs higher. However, I don't think my form was very good.
Before starting the program I weighed about 215 lbs. A month or two after the program, my squat got up to 315 lbs, and my weight jumped up to 225. Being that heavy made me really slow for volleyball (along with lots of ankle pain jumping and landing), so now I'm trying to cut down to as light as I can be while not losing too much strength.
My form was better (I think; hard to judge these things), but I still could not get as low as I want to. I have an issue with ankle flexibility, so it's basically impossible for me to do a complete 'ass-to-grass' squat. However, if I take a wider stance, focus on keeping knees out and warm up hip flexibility, I can get fairly low, significantly below parallel. So that's what I'm working on now; I dropped down to 275 to make sure I go absolutely to the bottom on each rep, and am working back up to 315+.
The program includes all the lifts I said before. It's called Stronglifts 5x5, and is basically designed for beginner lifters to get them to an intermediate stage. My start -> max progression was basically:
squat: 225 -> 355
deadlift: 225 -> 315
bench press: 135 -> 190
overhead press: 65 -> 115
barbell row: (never did before) -> 155
-
Thanks for the detailed info! I've been trying 5x5 stronglifts too for the past 3 months, but I had barely ever done any lifting before, so I am starting from scratch. I have been tracking what I eat, and I am somewhere around 140-145 pounds, so obviously I don't expect to lift anything similar to what you do.
What I've been finding most difficult is solving my shoulder pain (from being hunched over a laptop for the past 7 years), which makes standing overhead tricky (I am doing it seated at the moment), and even forces me to be careful with the bench press. But also one of my legs is an inch or two shorter than the other, which means that squatting is by default fairly messed up for me, I am moving to single leg squats for the time being because "heavy" (for me) squats were actually downright painful.
I actually enjoy the few exercises that don't make some pre-existing condition flare up :p

I think definitely do standing overhead, not seated. Standing forces you to engage your core. I'd keep doing low weight (even if it's just the bar) and work on form. My biggest problems are standing overhead and bench press as well. Overhead press is awkward for me to get the right form, and bench press causes some shoulder pain unless I'm very careful. I think in my case it's due to me swinging my right arm a lot for volleyball. I think my upper pec is not really firing like the other muscles are, which makes the shoulder muscles (front delt) try to overcompensate. I've been trying some isolation exercises there; I'll see if it helps.
I still need to fix my overhead press form. I think I need to get my elbows a little more in front to create a better "platform" to start the lift from. I also have a tendency to arch my back. This guy is pretty good about form for the basic power lifts:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wol7Hko8RhY
For bench press, I've found it's very important to keep your elbows tucked in and bring the bar down towards your abdomen instead of directly to the chest. (So a kind of diagonal path instead of vertical path.) Also draw the shoulder blades together.
-
The problem with standing overhead is just that I don't have the shoulder flexibility to do it properly, so I have to arch my back more than seems healthy (in the long term) to get the bar over my head. It's covered in the video, and a lot of these videos recommend shoulder dislocates, but that's not actually a good idea unless you already have pretty good shoulder mobility. In time, maybe. Right now, seated is the only one feasible for me.
I have the same problem as you for bench presses, my front delts are doing most of the work... which uh have lead to my shoulder muscles having a bit of a weird shape at the moment. I need to add something for my back deltoids after the Christmas break.
Man, when I started the porgram, I thought the hardest part would be staying motivated throughout, but turns out that it was figuring out the proper form to target the relevant muscles without hurting myself :p
-
Yeah, that you're tracking everything and can see progression, and also have little details to research and focus on, means that it keeps you actively engaged for a long time. It's been six months for me, and a lot of times I'm still pretty psyched to go lift. (Though there are definitely days where I'm really tired and really have to make myself go.)
-
On Saturday I hiked all 5 peaks of Hanging Rock state park; which is 11 miles; 2,200 ft elevation change.

You can also try some goblet squats. i warm up with those and I find it helps a lot with balance and depth. Focus on keeping knees pushed out while you're at the bottom an going up. Should feel glute activation.
I switched one day out of three with box Squats (at a lighter weight, only up to 275) instead of regular ones. Those are good for developing form as well. I might suggest quite low weight box Squats and see if there is any pain, and if not gradually work up.
-
I got into the University of Michigan! Given that I've lived in Ann Arbor my whole life, I'd prefer to go somewhere else, but after being deferred to regular action by my top two choices a bit of good news is quite a relief.
EDIT: To clarify, I'm a high school senior going through the terrible undergraduate college admissions process.

Sorry, missed this. I am trying to stretch a bit better now (butterflies, mainly). It seems to help a bit. I will try regular squats again after the Christmas break, will see how it goes.
The pain was there even for zero weight, it just graduated from "localized uncomfortable feeling" all the way up to "piercing pain" depending on the weight. Some googling suggested that I am not stretching properly before and after the work out *shrugs*

Squat stretching is extremely important for me. Like I think I'd be injured without it. When I don't warm up and stretch properly (I mean before even going to empty bar), I get pain in hip socket, lower back, knees. Biggest things for me are:
1) Hip flexors
2) General hip mobility
3) IT band, hamstrings
First I warm up with foam roller for a few minutes.. hit IT bands, quads, hamstrings, glutes, and also right on the hip flexor (front of hip, above quad) itself. Then I do these two:
1) Start in plank (hands and toes only touching ground), bring one foot up to the same-side hand (outside of it) and lunge into the hip socket, while keeping the other leg straight back (knee off ground). There are a few variations here. One is to make it dynamic, just move foot up to hand, stretch, move back, move other foot up, stretch, repeat. Other is to hold there, and maybe move around slowly. You can also drop the opposite knee to the ground and move the other leg through a bigger range of motion.
2) Regular hip flexor stretch. Start with one knee on the ground, other leg in front of you, knee bent 90 degrees with foot on ground. In the leg that is on the ground, activate the glute and lean forward over your other knee (keep glute activated). Should feel the stretch in the hip flexor, lean more for more stretch. Hands can remain on the forward knee, and you can raise the arm on the side that is stretched to go deeper. Hold for quite a while.
Also just getting in a complete depth squat with no weight, either (a) holding on to an anchor to get all the way down, or (b) holding a kettle bell/weight in front of you (i.e., goblet squat), and just holding the position (while keeping knees out).
I also do single-leg deadlifts with a small weight (like under 40, though can probably go as low as 10 or so) in the opposite hand before doing squats. I think this helps isolate some muscles and works on imbalances between the legs. Just doing the work to keep your balance there makes me feel a little stronger and more stable.

Thanks! This is very useful. I am stuck with body weight exercices for the next two weeks, so it's a good time to work on stretching.
By the way, how long are your work outs? Because mine are getting longer and longer, with the extra stretching, warm up and extra rest time between sets as I increase the weight. It started at about 30 mins, but now it's more like 1h30, and it can only get longer.

Total time in gym is very long, almost two hours. Because I do warmups for a long time.. like the stretching I was describing and some mobility for maybe 15 mins, then I do single-leg deadlifts/light goblet squats/jumps/jump squats to warmup, which is another 10 or 15. Then I start squat. Because I go heavy I take at least a couple minutes between sets, and they take some time to do. I've deloaded squats and am working back up, so haven't failed those in a long time, but I pretty often fail to get full 5x5 on overhead press or bench presses, so that workout tends to take a while as I try to take the full 4--5 minutes after a failed set.
Also, sometimes I have to wait for squat or bench press to free up, because those are used quite a bit, and there is only a couple of each. And depending on time/energy I do some stuff after the 5x5.. usually some isolation exercises and some extra core work (leg lifts or Russian twists or something similar).
-
Also, I found those hip adductor/abductor machines are good to do... helps target the sides of your legs that are maybe.. 'support' for squats but not necessarily worked hard when you do squats.

Got back up to 315 squat (5x5) today, though now I'm 20 pounds lighter than last time I squatted that. So I guess that's progress. I think I'm getting lower, too, though I didn't get a chance to video myself so it's hard to tell.

So yesterday I was under 200 lbs body weight (specifically, 199.2) for the first time since like one summer during grad school, and other than that since before high school I think. I started weighing myself daily and recording it, just for some stats and reference. I try to do the same time every day (when I wake up, before eating or drinking anything) for consistency.
Weight moves in funny ways. There seems to be preset 'plateaus' where its flat or oscillates, then drops drastically, then plateaus again, etc. Like I was 201.2 for three days in a row (exactly, no movement at all), then dropped 200.2, then 199.2, and today jumped back up to 201.6. I'm guessing the jump up today was because I ate a lot more carbs yesterday than usual (not any more calories, just less fat/protein and more carb), and you need to store more water when you store carbohydrates.
I'm trying to drop around 5--10 more. I may post a graph when I'm done if it looks interesting.

Today I was named a Regeneron (formally known as Intel) Science Talent Search finalist! This means that I get to spend a week in Washington D.C. with the 39 other finalists from around the United States, among other awesome things. The competition consisted of submitting a research paper along with supplemental essays and information. My paper is also on the arXiv at https://arxiv.org/abs/1610.09774 !

i broke the half as much as ww benchmark for deadlift & squat today
Ha. I've dropped some weight (at about 193 bodyweight now) and my lifts have gone down some. I haven't gone above 275 deadlift, and my form starts to suffer after a rep or two. I've also gone light on squats in favor of speed/explosion, so I only work up to 275 and then try to do fast sets (plyo-ish) of 135. Basically, I'm trying to get more fast-twitch work than strength now.
-
ooh, then i broke the 3/5(ww) benchmark
-
Didn't know we had some aspiring powerlifters amongst us.
I don't know that my lifts are worth bragging about.
OHP - 125lbs
Bench - 195lbs
Squat - 305lbs
Deadlift - 385lbs
Height - 5'11"
Weight - 160lbs
Age - 39
Lifting for ~2 years.
Started with SL 5x% now doing Wendler 5/3/1.
Goal is 1/2/3/4 (that is # of plates on OHP/Bench/Squat/DL) by end of this year and 1000lbs club by July next year (40th birthday).
After that I'm looking to get a sub 17 minute 5K while maintaining those lift numbers as well as body weight.
I'll probably come brag when I achieve that.
-
I started doing 5x5 a little under a year ago; saw pretty regular gains for about 6 months, I was around:
OHP: 115
Bench: 190
Squat: 355
Deadlift: 315
Row: 155
Max bodyweight was 225 (I'm 6'1"). Around November I cut my calorie intake a ton (probably by about 50%), at which case I stopped increasing weights for 5x5, but kept doing the routine (with goal to more or less maintain weight and improve form). I actually deloaded as well to work more on form. A month or two ago I switched my squat workout to light-weight speed squats instead of heavy squats (also sometimes box squats, etc.). Right now I'm at
OHP: 95
Bench: 170
Squat: Warmup to 1x5 @ 275 then 3x10 or 5x5 speed sets @135.
Deadlift: 275
Row: 135
I also start with jumps/plyo type stuff. I actually further deloaded bench press because when I go towards my upper limit, the shoulder muscles on my right arm seem to dominate and the pec on that side isn't really getting worked correctly, and also leads to pain in my arm.
I find it weird that a lot of people can deadlift more than they squat, but for me squatting is much easier. It could just be because I've done it a lot more, so my body is more used to the motion.
-
The thing that bothers me/is dominating my current goals is this:
http://www.higher-faster-sports.com/verticaljumpcalculator.html
Basically you can get a rough estimate of your standing vertical (at least, what it should be) base don your strength level. With a squat of 315 (I think I can actually do more, but I haven't in a while) and a bodyweight of 195 (I'm a bit under but it fluctuates), I should have a standing vertical of 27". However, without an approach, I'm only at around 18", maybe a couple more, but still well below 27. So that's what motivated my shift to plyo.
Getting to 24" standing vertical (on sore legs, since I never really have fresh legs) would be a big achievement.
-
When my deadlift goes up so does my squat but not vice versa. Judging by my sticking point in the squat I need more leg development because I tend to pancake and good morning the last bit up on the real heavy sets (indicating a reliance on back muscles in favor of leg).
I've read front squat is a good accessory to develop a better back squat but I've never front squatted so I'm a bit wary to add it to a routine that is still betting progression.
That said, getting the first rep of a deadlift up is the toughest but I can generally bang out 8-10 reps at 90 percent of max. Squat is just the opposite for me, each successive rep feels twice as hard as the last with my 10 rep range being at 80 percent or below (which is normal). I think my anatomy is just optimized for deadlift.
My bitchiest lift is bench press. I think I am anatomically disadvantaged for it and I have to do a bench session every time I am in the gym to see any progression. I've noticed that when OHP goes up so does bench. Also bench goes up with body weight.

There's a book out there called the vertical jump bible that programs just for developing a vertical.

My squat-deadlift relationship is like exactly the opposite. After the first or second deadlift (at a weight around my limit), it gets harder to maintain a neutral spine. I have a tendency to lose leg/hamstring activation, so like my legs straighten before lifting the bar off the ground, instead of during the left. So the finish is like a Romanian deadlift. I get more scared about getting hurt with deadlifts. Squats I'm more comfortable with.
I have a ton of trouble with benches and overhead presses, I think all dealing with my shoulder. I believe my right shoulder is shifted/rotated forward (like a hunched shoulder, but only on one side), which prevents the pectoral muscle from fully functioning. I have to really try to keep the shoulder blade pulled back while consciously focusing on my chest at the same time. It's tough.

I've heard of it, but it's basically, do plyo and get stronger. My strength is sufficient (since I can squat over 1.5x bodyweight); it's really the fast-twitch kind of speed that I need to work on.

I should mention I started at 120lbs with P90x something less than 3 years ago. I was around 130lbs when I picked up Stronglifts.
I eat a shitload but track macros and eat Whole Foods so it's pretty expensive. I have no idea why Whole Foods is capitalized like that because I definitely can't afford to buy groceries there.

Nice, so you just man up and own the title Powerlifter, then?

I've thought about competing because everyone says it's huge fun but the logistics and financials are kind of prohibitive in my opinion. Before kids, no issue, but nowadays it's too much and by the time we get the kids far along enough to make it viable I'll be too old.
-
I haven't been lifting as regularly as I would like lately. Work, relationships, other obligations and injuries are kind of doing a number on my gym time. I never completely stopped, but I am hoping to start again in earnest once the summer term rolls around and things calm down. Also, hopefully I will manage to not bust my knee again. It's really sapping all the fun out of it.
-
Actually, I just measured and my ceilings are closer to 10' than the 9.5' I thought they were. My standing reach is almost 8', and I can sometimes (on a good jump and if I reach) touch the ceiling with a no-approach jump (standing vertical), so I'm almost at 24" for standing vertical. So that's better than I thought it was.

At Alton Towers, there's one of those laser shooting rides. Before getting on one time I asked what the high score they knew of was. Got told by the assistant she'd seen a 120K once. I proceeded to score 141K.
But the picture I tried to take didn't come out, and the scores aren't recorded or anything anywhere, so I'll never be able to verify it :(.

Nothing big compared to most people around here, but I now officially own a car, all taxed and paid for. It feels kinda surreal, even though I got my license 8 months ago. Sadly it gets dark at like 4:30pm at the moment, and it's been raining recently, so I might put off going for a proper drive until the weekend... but I did drive it home alone from a friend's house in the dark and rain, so there's that.

Going well so far. Sometimes it seems a little easier than I expected and sometimes it seems about as hard as I expected, but it hasn’t really been any harder than I expected so far. I’m sure that will change eventually, though. I also have extremely generous paternity leave which is going to help a ton.

The real question is whether or not you have any family nearby. We made the fatal mistake of moving hundreds of miles from any family before settling down and popping out kids. It's been nightmare mode ever since. When family visits or we visit family we get glimpses of what life could be like and it appears to be lullaby dream mode in comparison.

Thanks!
How's everything going? Baby and parents being awesome?
Going well so far. Sometimes it seems a little easier than I expected and sometimes it seems about as hard as I expected, but it hasn’t really been any harder than I expected so far. I’m sure that will change eventually, though. I also have extremely generous paternity leave which is going to help a ton.
The real question is whether or not you have any family nearby. We made the fatal mistake of moving hundreds of miles from any family before settling down and popping out kids. It's been nightmare mode ever since. When family visits or we visit family we get glimpses of what life could be like and it appears to be lullaby dream mode in comparison.
Ditto, we ended up moving home and life has significantly improved.

Yeah if my sister didn’t live near us, we wouldn’t be able to see Endgame on Tuesday.
-
I started a new job this week.
On a higher salary.
Donald X clearly now needs to release expansions quicker!

Yeah both of our families are ~1000 miles away so that has indeed been a challenge.

Nice! We are about to start ours and frankly it's slightly terrifying (but also exciting to finally own a place).

Next month we're using our "we don't have to pay the mortgage this month" money to buy a Switch!

Congrats! It is a wild ride which will reprogram your life and brain in ways you can’t possibly conceive! But it’s good times.

Pun not intended?
I'm sorry. A little bit.

Easy, just go through and delete an old post every time you make a new one.

I got a promotion! I am now a manager and apparently missed the memo that coming in at 8am is no longer the protocol. So I’m bored, anyone have questions about title insurance let em rip.

I beat Sans!
Such a fun battle. Didn’t exactly time it, but I think it was around 5 hours total spread out over about 5 days.

Mostly I think it took determination.

I know like 90% of people have played Undertale now, but should you not be spoiler tagging Sans, really? It's a fairly unexpected boss I would say.

I thought about it; but it is a pretty old game, and I feel like if someone actually knows who Sans is, then they also know that you fight him.

I don't even know who the non-Sans final boss is supposed to be.

There's no real answer there; as there are multiple different ways the game can play out depending on the choices you make. I'd say there are essentially 3 different possible final bosses depending on how you play.
-
The game explicitly chastises the player for taking one specific route, and the other two are very similar, only one has extra content. It’s pretty clear to me who the final boss is supposed to be. Undertale is not Stanley’s Parable.
-
pacovf, you have not paid enough attention to the routes, the lessons learned from the characters, and what the actions you take teach you about yourself.
The true final boss is Jessica.

Nice. I only have one published paper with a co-author who is also Erdős-less, so I'm still waiting for mine. There's a small chance I'll get something next year.
What field is it in?

Does it have to be an officially published paper; or could arguing some point of math with strangers on the internet count?

Do you mean, is your Erdős number now 6?

Given that people said that it was bogus when I said that I have a Bacon number of 3 because I know someone who knew Tom Hanks as a kid, I would say it has to be official.
-
Quite. I mean, I've had mathematical conversations with several people with Erdos numbers of 1. Doesn't give me an Erdos number of 2!

I've got a 2!

Some of the mathematical arguments I've had on the internet feel like they would drag my Erdos number up if I had to count them.

Today I activated 2 tacticians in the same turn.

With this post; I steal the #2 ranking for most posts on F.DS! Sure maybe it’s only because eHalcyon mysteriously disappeared 3 years ago; but I swear I had nothing to do with that.
Awaclus should probably watch his back just in case, though.

I won the annual research award for my university! No one in my department has ever won so I am pretty stoked. They announced it in a Zoom meeting...so I think people were clapping, but I’m not super sure.

I've taken the gender contiuum test (https://programs.clearerthinking.org/gender_continuum_test.html). After the test itself, there was a part where you were given 18 traits and had to predict which 9 of them scored higher for women than men across their dataset.
I got 100% of them correct :-)

I only got 14 of them correct, I was also more womanly than the average woman in all of the traits I got wrong.

The test also couldn't guess my gender, which I've now decided is brag-worthy.

Our offer was just accepted on some land to build a house on!!
After multiple delays due to issues with getting DOT and county approval for new subdivision stuff; finally closed! We now own a bunch of land. Can't do anything at all with it until we get the floor plan finalized.

That is awesome! I built our house about 13 years ago after almost two years of research. Oh wow did i learn some things in the building process though. I'd love to discuss if you are interested. In general, where are you building? We build in a hot humid climate and most of the design choices followed that. Low mass walls and roof, porch to obstruct sun; foam insulation, longer W-E than N-S, etc.

Cool! We're in North Carolina; so pretty hot and humid at least as far as the US goes... not as much as plenty of other countries. Never would have thought about things like W-E vs N-S, but that makes sense.
