Game Reports / Luck in Dominion strikes again

Important card(s): Wharf
We opened differently, he Monument/Silver, me Cutpurse/Silver, in hope to stop him from getting Wharves. But it didn't really make so much difference.

Short summary from the game:
  • I never hit $5.
  • I got 4/4 on turns 3/4, I bought my first Wharf the same turn he played it.
  • All my three terminals collided on turn 9. If I'd played one of the Wharves, all my actions would've missed the reshuffle.
  • I played my first Wharf on turn 12 (!), when he already had two provinces. It was already over by then. I played 3 Wharves in total.
Result: He wins the province split 6-2.

Apart from maybe buy a Gold instead of Wharf on turns 5/6, I don't know how I could've played much better.

I guess you can now draw cards in buy phase? Buy Cultist, and trash it with Watchtower? That's wierd. Not that you get any use of it, you can't play more treasure...

Patchouli
$5 - Action
Gain a Copper, Silver, or Gold in hand.
If you gain a Copper, +2 Cards, +2 Actions.
If you gain a Silver, +1 Action.
If you gain a Gold, discard two cards.
The Silver option is superior to Explorer's (unless you gain a gold with Explorer), it's a non-terminal Explorer. Also this card has more flexibility, you obviously choose what to gain based on how many actions you need. All these options are quite powerful. If you choose gold, and has a single silver and copper in hand, you can discard the two other cards and have a double-gold turn. Gaining a gold in hand is quite powerful.

Help! / Re: Rabble killed me in this set. Why?

You had just as many rabbles as he had. I can't see you done anything wrong, he was just a bit lucky, to get a village and rabble clash on his hands.

I especially like the treasure, the variance in colors as opposed to the old cards. Curse looks nice.

Shuffle luck is so annoying! I've found the perfect solution, but the cards wouldn't cooperate with me :'(

I was very satisfied with this one. I think I won by picking the kingdom cards very carefully. I wanted all the cost reducers, Governor and Council Room, Crossroads to tackle the victory and for the one-time actions, bank and a contraband, and menagerie, obviously. I got a little lucky too at the end, that it didn't stall that much with all those Colonies.

Anyway, very fun and unique challenge, def!

What about just discarding one victory card instead of two for the actions? Just compare it to a vanilla village.
...and it seems that it's substantially better? But probably not broken.
It's just that it really sucks when you have no victory to discard, and therefore hard to have trust in it as a village unless you have a decent amount of victory cards.
In early game, you will must certainly get no use of the actions. In mid-game, you will most certainly not hit any victory, unless you're going dutchy/duke or buys victory cards in any way.

I thought about Baron, but I think tlloyd have the solution. Vault both has drawing power and gives the most +$.

Can you NV or Island your cards?
Also, I guess Embargo, Feast and such are useless?
I guess so, but it wouldn't make very much difference anyway, since you can only get one Island or play the native village once per turn.

They become dead cards since they can't be trashed from your deck, so that makes sense.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Cache use?
« on: April 13, 2012, 02:22:30 pm »
It's useful in games with cache, salvager/spice merchant and no other +buys/gainers. Buy a cache, next turn trash them with salvager/spice merchant and you got 4 buys. Works with Border Village too.

What do you mean? Trash what next turn, the cards you just bought? How, when they probably aren't in that hand? And why do you have 4 buys?
Well, for example in games with king's court, where you can draw the whole deck. You have nothing to trash with the salvager/spice merchant, but they are the only sources for +buy. Instead of buying a province every turn, buy a cache, next turn trash cache and the two coppers, buy three provinces and another cache.
That seems like a pretty specific case. So Cache is good when the kingdom also includes King's Court, engine cards, and Salvager/Spice Merchant as the only source of +buy?
Ok, ok, maybe it was an too unusual case to be mentioned. It doesn't require king's court, that was just an example.

Yeah, Sellswords seem to be very strong. And hard to counter, too. Maybe it's better at $6?
