Game Reports / Re: Bishop + Ill-Gotten Gains
« on: December 05, 2011, 04:24:28 am »
I tried a couple games against myself and it looks like if you open Potion your opponent can counter with IGG and Gardens pretty well before you can use Bishop to much effect.

Various degrees of convolution:

-You want to empty the Gold pile for some reason
-They're playing some actions engine and you want to gum up their deck (probably counts as convoluted since they'd probably have to have gotten the Tunnel from Masquerade)
They don't have to reveal
-You're about to possess them near the end of the game, and they probably have +cards in their hand.
-They're running Wishing Well and have a lot of discard, so you figure they'll probably be able to discard it on their turn anyway, and you want to deny a free +2 cards.
-You know they have Witch in hand and those are the last two cards in the draw, or some other cycling situation.
-You know they have Crossroads (and some other draw or more Crossroads) in hand
-You know they have Scout and discard in hand.
-It's a 3 player game and you want to help them since you're ahead and they're doing the worst, to solidify your lead in Provinces/Colonies
-You're pretty much screwing them with pirate ship and trashing most of their golds. Similarly, with Thief/Noble Brigand

Feast: Trader?
Feast lets you get 1 silver, 2 Traders give you 4 silvers.

Lookout
A counter to opening sea hag
I reduced curses to slag
It was quite slick
A couple of clicks
I had the game in the bag

I was so eager just to trash
It proved, finally, quite rash
I had to wince
All three: "Province"
And one went away in a flash

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Using Steward's +2 coin early

Copper Copper Copper Copper Steward >> Gold is one I find hard to pass up.

Yeah I would be interested in everyone's opinion about that one, because I also tend to take the Gold, but I'm not sure wether it's right or not.

It's kind of like choosing between Cache and Silver.

Having either unbounded turns or unbounded piles makes the puzzle uninteresting. You have to track one and limit the other, or track both.

If we're considering one-turn where the variable is the supply limit:

KC/Gainers is the best but will run out eventually. Therefore it's prudent to go Duke/Duchy first (quadratic *1/2 per green * fraction of greens (probably 1/2)). Vineyards are nice but harder to gain, so next would probably be Silk Roads. After that is Gardens. Anything else is basically worthless, really.

Some hints:
1. One of the cards is Followers
2. What sets Mountebank apart from other attacks?
3. One of the cards is Thief, but Noble Brigand is not one.

Is it possible to then trash/ambassador everything away (use counting house to get the discarded coppers) and then island the last card? Then you wouldn't be reshuffling.

If you look closer those don't work, but you're on the right track.

1. Governor, Masquerade, +3 more cards
2. Mountebank, Ambassador +2 more cards
3. Mountebank, Ambassador +4 more cards (Honorable mention Saboteur)

They're all very similar in style.

edit: correction for part 1,3.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: What cards are still unique?
« on: October 27, 2011, 02:37:15 am »
Quarry is the only card that changes the relative cost between non-copper/curse cards (single usage) (All actions affect peddler).
Mining Village is the only card that gives you the option of trashing itself when you play it.
Island is the only card that lets you eliminate your entire deck without help from your opponent (Embargo/Mining Village doesn't really help, since how would you get to where you only had that one card)?
Transmute is the only card that can upgrade a copper into itself (without bridges).
Horn of Plenty is the only Treasure that doesn't give you any form of money.
Pawn is the only card that can ALWAYS let you get +1 card and +0 action (I guess atomically that's not that interesting but it's always bugged me that there's no Card with +1 card without a + action)
Cities is the only card that cares about piles emptying.
Tactician is the only duration card that may not do anything on your next turn (Haven)
Duke is the only Green you can get all of without getting any VP (in a 3 player game).(Fairgrounds, Vineyard. Fail.)
Curse is the only card lowering your VP (even in the corner case of gardens, it in itself lowers your VP).
Fool's Gold is the only card sensitive to when your opponent gains a card (Embargo doesn't count, since it's the embargo token that matters).

I don't know if Pearl Diver counts given Oracle, Cartographer, Wishing Well, Apothecary, Scout, etc.

Grab a colony and then put it back with a black market ambassador :P. Then you have 42 coin.

It's correct that Ironworks gains, then gives +whatever.

Ambassador/Cache=fast catch-up in buying power and nigh-Mountebank level of attack.

One might note with Noble Brigand one must gain the trashed cards. If you're going virtual money and aiming to destroy their deck, you may not want their treasures, especially silvers. Woodcutter/Gardens and Trader/Colony might be good examples (though I don't know if Trader is any good in Colony games).

Hmm, actually after a second thought it should do pretty well against Minion. I was thinking that with HT you wouldn't get to discard Tunnel, but you could just execute the combo on your own turn.

edit: haha, not being sarcastic, just didn't think it through completely

Horse Traders + Tunnel should be pretty effective, though maybe not against Minion.

One use for Mandarin I would really like to pull off at some point: having the same Treasure card generate coin multiple times in one turn.

Venture, Venture, Horn of Plenty, gain Border Village, gain Mandarin, stack 2 Ventures and Horn of Plenty. Venture, Venture, Venture, Horn of Plenty..."

This is not efficient at all and would definitely not be worth setting up. It still sounds really cool.

FTFY
Just to add another level of unlikely ridiculousness...
this would be insane if one also had diadem and a bunch of actions.

Hmm, I had thought you could put 30 embargo tokens on something and use trader, but that actually only gets you 10 silvers, not 30. Quarry/Talisman/BV messes up your ability to get a bunch of Duchies, and Bridge/Princess give you plus buy so those are out too
