Trashing Squire

The on-trash effect of Squire is to gain an attack card.  I've used this to gain Alchemy attacks without the need for a potion.  Can this also be used to gain Followers?  Thanks!

No.  Unless otherwise specified, any card that gains a card does so from the Supply.  Followers is not in the Supply.

Davio:
To clarify, you can't gain a Mercenary either this way, that can only be gained by trashing an Urchin.

And to make it even more clear, you can't start randomly grabbing attack cards from the Black Market deck.

But very astute of you to use it to gain Alchemy cards without a Potion!

Prize cards, Madman, Mercenary, Spoils and Black Market cards are not in the supply. For this reason they can never be gained, unless a card specifically refers to the pile they are in.

So if you want to gain a card, first check if it's in the supply. If it's not, check whether the pile the card is in is referred to. If neither, you can't gain it.

For example, if you hit a Spoils with Jester, you can't gain a copy of it. If you trash a Spoils with Thief, you can gain it, because Thief tells you to gain the card from the trash. Tournament, Urchin, Marauder, Black Market etc all mention the specific pile to gain a card from.

It's also worth noting cards cannot be "returned" to the supply with Ambassador if they have never been there. This is also relevant for Shelters.

Spoils can be gained by Thief.
