Dominion General Discussion / Re: Enlighten me about Gardens

The board in this game didn't look like it'd be well-suited for a pure Gardens strategy, since the only +buy or free-gain cards cost $5 or more, but since I got a $6 hand on turn 3 I decided to get a Hoard and go for pure-Gardens anyway and indeed it worked like a charm. (The free Gold from the Hoard kept me liquid enough to buy a bunch of Festivals—i.e., non-terminal Woodcutters—and so forth. I did diverge from pure Gardens on my one $11 turn because hey, hard to turn down a Colony.) So now I'm wondering if Hoard with moderately expensive +buy might be a viable board for planning to pursue pure Gardens from the get-go, or if I just got lucky. Certainly the presence of a curse attack helped out a lot by emptying that third pile.

You have two dead cards in hand (Province plus another victory card, or clashing terminals, or whatever) and therefore would rather get hit with Followers on this turn than on your next turn.

Queso: you're right about Treasure Maps. The reason it's honorable mention and not on the legitimate list is because it meets the criteria except in the rare case that you have more than two Treasure Maps in hand at the time you play the Throne Room. Chapel is arguably a slightly-less-honorable mention as well, since it only escapes from the list if you have more than four cards in hand (that you want to trash) in addition to your Throne Room and Chapel.

Thisisnotasmile: correct!

The exact stipulation is that if you throne room or king's court them, nothing new happens on the second (or third) time you play them that you couldn't have already accomplished the first time. Under this description, Library and Watchtower fit exactly.

WanderingWinder, your guess isn't an action....

Here is a list of action cards. What one other action card can be added to the list to make it complete?

Library
Outpost
Secret Chamber
Tactician
Watchtower

The answer isn't Treasure Map, but it gets an honorable mention.

(I hope I haven't forgotten any.)

EDIT: And also Prince!

My opponent said he'd chosen the board specifically in order to enable unusually high scores, and... well, it worked.

If I'd planned my turn a bit better I could have actually scored a bit higher (e.g., if I'd king's-courted my goons I would have ended up with a few more buys and then could have grabbed some coppers for the extra points)—but I kind of like the elegance of having exactly 32 buys, as it turned out.

I'm very fond of this one, in which I ended the game by buying out all 32 victory cards on one turn (none of the stacks had previously been touched).

I've actually won a couple of Alchemist vs. Masquerade games just by only putting three or four Alchemists back on top and usually having a copper or something to pass; the three or four alchemists on top usually still gave me enough draw to find the remaining alchemists.

I also won an Alchemist vs. Rabble game even though I usually put more than five alchemists back on top and losing the remaining ones to the rabble, for the same reason.

Hand: Harvest and four coppers;
play Harvest and draw Estate, Copper, Pawn, and the Curse you got after your opponent's turn-3 Sea Hag play.
