Hello!
Hello!
Hello!
2. Before we had established a "no google" rule. We can vote on it, but I think it should stand. As a non-native speaker, I would like to be able to sometimes use translation tools, I hope that's fine.
As for the clue: Beach and Pool sound reasonable. The third one could be Air or Shakespeare.
why Shakespeare?Maybe I have an association that doesn't work with the English word? There is a meaning to swelter in German which is associated to romance, like you're sweltering from longing, or something.

ok, for the big finish I would be fine with either Beach or Mercury. I sort of lean toward Mercury because in addition to the closest to the sun thing, it's also used in thermometers which are a symbol for extreme heat. But idk, Beach is a more obvious fit.

Is there a Churchill association other than Winston? Is it the name of a football (soccer) team, perhaps? Or a ship? I am so tempted to break the Google rule.I don't know of any soccer team named like that. I'm sure there are ships named after Churchill, but I don't believe any of these are famous. Galzria is not British, right? I'm not too worried that we're missing something.
It could connect to Beach, because Normandy, which is tenuous. But I almost want to guess Beach first anyway because it's our leftover from last time.I think given the other available words, Beach seems a pretty big stretch for Churchill. It could still totally be the third word from Sweltering, but I wouldn't have it as our first guess.
Otherwise I think I like London and Germany first, then Queen and Embassy in either order. Once again I'm not entirely sold on Shakespeare.Well, Shakespeare works in an "also a famous English person" sort of way. I like it more than Beach at least.
is this a pass on by blue?

They have the option of one more guess.
I kinda think we should pass.I agree, for now.

Ok, long shot but a Shrubbery is basically a bush. And bush is another word for the Australian Outback. And Kiwi is a word for a person from New Zealand, which is close to Australia. ... no, that's too much.I mean, I agree that this is too much, but... kiwi is also a fruit, I suppose a berry, so it would grow on a shrubbery?

That means we have unlimited guesses, right? Or do we just have 1?
You are allowed to use 0 as the number part of your clue. For example, feathers: 0 means, "None of our words relate to feathers."
If 0 is the number, the usual limit on guesses does not apply. Field operatives can guess as many words as they want. They still must guess at least one word.
If you're not sure why this is useful, don't worry. You'll figure it out.
Wow - my bad with Opera. I felt really confident with that one.
Ruler and princess would be FTW obv picks. Lock em up if you agree.

Vote: Scola. Only Scum reads the setup that closely and points out what everybody else misses.
We need 6 more from INTERNATIONAL, I think the order should be (unless you have another top word pick you wanna look at):
Earth/Stock first (order IDK about). Followed by Diamond (unless you got something better). Possibly followed by Church.
The only thing I am hesitant about is the Diamond part. I do not think pasta would guess us 2/3 between GOLD/COPPER/DIAMOND, and I do not think they go with the word INTERNATIONAL, if it is 3/3.
That being said it could totally be 0/3 lol and Diamond is not one...
Either way I think Church should move up actually into a yes.
Earth -> Stock -> Diamond/Church/South? You like anything outside of that?

Ok, so that’s faust telling us not to guess football.
I think he’s also telling us not to guess change.
I would do Gold next, I think. Seems to have a fairly straightforward connection to Wire.
Oh geez. Idk what’s going on this game.
We've only got one more, right?
I feel like if diamond or south was the assassin, Scola would have given us a 0 clue about one of them. So I say let's send it and guess one of them. I'm probably leaning more towards Diamond.

Washington - Why not just "president" or something
South - I have no idea why capitol is the guess lol but I mean...
I like south based on the game history and bc the only other one it could be is washington... which I feel would be a different clue. So I like South. What you think?
yeah I mean I just don't get the clue. Why would he not do like.... president? american? deceased? monument? First?.... like anything else.
Also why would he pick this for South... so yeah... either way I don't know what to make of it so you can lock in whatevs. This match has been weird af lol

Kaepernick:Football,Change,Washington
Definitely needed to do something about football, and Change was a very dangerous assassin word because it fits with so many clues. Washington was an outside bet, there was no real danger of it getting guessed, but it was nice to have it covered too. Honestly I thought the game was forfeit at this point as I was like 90% certain that the next clue was going to be American: 3, for Washington/Football/Dreams. Turns out I was wrong.
It was file that really got us. We got so close!!
I will start the next round later today if mail-mi doesn't. We all probably need a minute, but I'm looking forward to spymastering.
good job everyone.
Ok, here we go again:
Red goes first
DEATH AZTEC ENGINE MISSILE COURT NUT PIZZA THIEF HELICOPTER HOLE TIME TABLE CLOAK RULER SCORPION PIANO SQUARE PAN CALF LUCK SPOT DANCE CROWN FOREST IRON
Crash 4
Ok, I messed that up. But I think we can actually carry on with the colors reversed. I can message mail-mi a reversed version of the grid he and I can work off of. Or we can mulligan the grid and start over
I mean, we should be going first anyway, so just Reverse the colors on the Spymaster Grid.
just confirming...
same teams, same colors, you just reversed the colors on the grid right?
Ok, here we go again:RedBlue goes first
DEATH AZTEC ENGINE MISSILE COURT NUT PIZZA THIEF HELICOPTER HOLE TIME TABLE CLOAK RULER SCORPION PIANO SQUARE PAN CALF LUCK SPOT DANCE CROWN FOREST IRON
Agree with Death/Helicopter. Engine and Missile also came to mind. I could see Piano, thinking about comic strips where a piano falls from the sky.Ok, here we go again:
Red goes first
DEATH AZTEC ENGINE MISSILE COURT NUT PIZZA THIEF HELICOPTER HOLE TIME TABLE CLOAK RULER SCORPION PIANO SQUARE PAN CALF LUCK SPOT DANCE CROWN FOREST IRON Crash 4
Crash = Death seems pretty obvious (Potential outcome of any vehicular crash)
Helicopter Crash also seems pretty obvious here.
Past that, it's not quite as clear.
Time Crash - This is a mini-episode in New Who (errr... 2005-2010?) starring David Tenant and Peter Davidson... But this could be an unintentional connection.
Engine failure could cause a Car Crash.
Missiles could cause a Crash?
---
That's all that jumps out to me. Faust, does anything else stand out for you?

Let's lock the first two in.
Death
Then
Helicopter
Death is blue
Helicopter is blue
I will say, I want Time to Blue, because I want to believe Joth would have faith in us as f.ds members to get this. But I don’t know that I believe it’s blue.I understand the sentiment. I think from a tactical perspective it's probably best to pass for now. We've had a good run and we can use that additional clue later on.
DEATH | AZTEC | ENGINE | MISSILE | COURT |
NUT | PIZZA | THIEF | HELICOPTER | HOLE |
TIME | TABLE | CLOAK | RULER | SCORPION |
PIANO | SQUARE | PAN | CALF | LUCK |
SPOT | DANCE | CROWN | FOREST | IRON |
Well, that worked out nicely.
Chieftan is Ruler for sure, and then... I assume strongly that Crown isn't ours.
The second word could be Forest? Possibly Aztec, but I think they had a more centralized goverment structure? Calf also very vaguely fits.
I'm not at all confident on another guess. We're at 5 of 9 - we could press the advantage and take a shot here, or we could let it sit to see what fills out on the board. I'm more in favor of the latter - take the pass here, wait and see how we're feeling on our next turn.i think I agree with the pass here, especially since Piano could reasonably have been the 4th Crash word, so it's not like we're looking at 2 unused clues.
IRON
I like PAN next.
Why nut for rust? you mean like nuts and bolts? I guess, I still think Pan more likely.
Why Crown for Ballroom? What do you think of my Table suggestion?
DEATH | AZTEC | ENGINE | MISSILE | COURT |
NUT | PIZZA | THIEF | HELICOPTER | HOLE |

Forest for sure. Are Elves particularly lucky, or are they considered good luck? Leprechauns are, but I haven’t heard as much about Elves.Don't know really, it was kind of a gut association. Maybe I'm confusing my fairy creatures.
I’m down with trying Luck if you want, faust. Otherwise, I would pass.I'm a bit worried, and I would pass unless you think there's a chance that we guess the final word this turn as well. I think Chieftain was Forest, so that's gone, and then Crash might have been Piano, but maybe it's something else?
I don’t think we’ll guess the final word this round, no, and I’m not at all certain on Luck vs Time.

Ok, sorry for my missile doubt.
So we (unless overlap):
Have 2 left for ballroom, 1 for rust, 1 for attack
I'm still on board with either table or time, probably time a little more.
(I've been thinking about it with rust and the reason I like time, is if the words were iron and nut, there are probably more precise clues)
Time is neutral.Well bleh lol
So that would be Aztec/Luck? There's an outside chance of Calf, as a sort of blood sacrifice thing.

By the way, as I have been wondering, and not being a spymaster seems like a good time to ask this: Do we have a consensus on whether full names are allowed as clues?
I think it creates a weird slippery slope where I could say Bob Miller Green, which is plausibly a name, when really I just wanted to give the clues bob, miller, and green which point to different words in the grid.I mean, I trust everyone here enough to believe it wouldn't be abused. The opposing spymaster could always challenge such a clue. Right now, I could also say "Apym", which is plausibly a name, but I just want to clue Apple, Paper, Yacht, Mice.
By the way, as I have been wondering, and not being a spymaster seems like a good time to ask this: Do we have a consensus on whether full names are allowed as clues?
My vote is no. One word only.

What about 2 word concepts? Like giving the clue New York, you couldn't give that clue with just York or New because those are completely different things.
I mean, I trust all of us not to abuse the rules like joth pointed out, so my vote is probably yes. Though I'd be okay with a no ruling if that's what the consensus is.
Well yes, but so is joth's example:I think it creates a weird slippery slope where I could say Bob Miller Green, which is plausibly a name, when really I just wanted to give the clues bob, miller, and green which point to different words in the grid.I mean, I trust everyone here enough to believe it wouldn't be abused. Well apym is strictly against the rules, not because it's not as name, but because you can't clue based on the letters in a word.
Spymasters should not be allowed to make up names, not even names that turn out to be real. Sue Mee is not avalid clue for CHINA and LAWYER.

We still have Night, which is reasonable for Jazz and I suppose possible for Manslaughter. The fourth for Manslaughter might have been Tooth I suppose.
And then there's Copper, which is plausible for Manslaughter or for Jazz, albeit somewhat of a stretch for both. I suppose Tie could fit for Manslaughter: tying people up feels like an alternative to killing someone, but oftentimes it ends up being a prelude to it...
It's probably Night or Copper? Idk, what do you think.

Why train?Because on the one hand it's also transportation and on the other you need special training to work at an ambulance.

@mail-mi - you around? If not, I'll make a guess.
We don't have any more we need to guess, right? That's a pass?
I'm getting more busy with school, and my wife is about to have a baby, so I'm gonna step out of this next round. Thanks for the games!Congrats!
Yeah, I'm not going to have any brain for this tonight. In the UK, 5 hours ahead of forum time.
Welcome to the game and the team, infangthief!

People seem reluctant to start right away. Seems like something else must be occupying everyone's attention at the moment...

So... little... sleep...
Tuesday was 4:30am-7:00am. Wednesday was 2:00am to 7:00am... And now it’s 1:15am, and I’m beat!
Perhaps we should play this round with green and yellow instead of red and blue. :P
Same here!
I'd be curious to know who people here were supporting... though worried to open up that can of worms.

Sub is subcontractor in this tense - or different meaning i am in aware of?When I was like 10 I went to this youth group and had to pay £0.20 "subs" each week. I think I've come across it in other contexts, like I think it's subs you pay for being in a sports club.
Could be Note.
Could also be unicorn. Not sure if Instagram is/was a unicorn (billion dollar valuation) but it's very possible.
I'm fine to lock in Tag

So @infangthief which were the words you actually meant for filter? (it's amusing that our last two words were both the ones we each wanted for it!)Filter -> Coffee, Screen, Mail (as in email filtering. I didn't think (or know) about filtering with Maple syrup. And I totally didn't expect Film there. I mostly just went with it because of how well my Filter: 4 clue had gone in Codenames XII; it seems to be quite a versatile word!)
I'd been planning a "Ragtime" clue for Maple, Swing and South, but had to wait for Piano to go first. And by then they'd hit on Swing for us too.

Very famous film in the US.Yeah I've googled it; turns out I know it, but only by the German title which is so different that I didn't recognize it.
Film
Scuba diver
Assuming pass for y’all then?Well we have a leftover clue, so I would like some discussion time at least.

Without knowing too much about pudding, I would think Bread, Milk and Whip. Bread pudding is a thing, and milk may be an ingredient in puddings and whipping may be part of the process of making a pudding. One of these should also be the remaining word for Peel. I guess that would be Bread here. Milk is for sure a Pudding word.

After the petroglyph => oil connection that Scola and I considered, what do people think about combining words to form a clue?I'm not sure. I don't think there's that many cases where the singular components point to something that the compound doesn't already point to. To use another example from this game, how do you feel about the clue "Bioterrorism" being used to clue words for just the "Bio" or "Terrorism" parts?
As a clearer example, if I wanted to clue SHEEP and ATTACHMENT, could I give the clue "Ramshackle: 2"? Ram=>Sheep and Shackle=>Attachment.
My view is no.

I feel like "Ramshackle" shouldn't be allowed as you use it, but it's hard to draw a line of what is allowed. When in doubt, I think you should reach out to the other spymaster to see if they are okay with it.

Cotton, possibly, yes.
There’s Slavers Bay from Game of Thrones.
A Teacher could be considered a form of slaver.
Germany might also fit here, with their concentration camps.

Well it has a connection to cemetery. And there were a lot of vigils after Columbine. I’m open to other suggestions though.
"Columbine" is very similar to "Columbian", which would imply Coffee. I thought you were maybe going for that. Those are indeed the final ones! The complete grid:

I didn't see that other. But yeah we would've been blindly guessing if we had. No way of knowing their last 2 were so connected.

Oh, sorry, I assumed pass there from blue team.
Should have held back, go on, take another guess at something...
I feel like it would be possible to narrow down the field significantly given that we also have the red clue to work with... not saying that it would have been a good idea to guess, but I can imagine a situation where you'd want to do a "blind" guess.Oh, sorry, I assumed pass there from blue team.

We could’ve somewhat, but we couldn’t include narrowing clues based off their Circular clue - and while we may have been able to eliminate 5-7 tops, that would still leave us guessing amongst 6 unknowns with the assassin in play, so....

Ha, ha, I just happened to wander by and see this. Fixed in the spreadsheet. Actually, I downloaded a list of the words on BGG from the base set and Duet. I added them together and uploaded all 827 of them to the spreadsheet. That nearly doubles what was there before. I chose not to add the Undercover expansion. It'd be easy enough to clone this spreadsheet and add it for groups that want sexy time. If this addition is not welcome, I can revert back to an older version.
I may come back to look at responses here, but I've been bad about that lately, so feel free to message me on Discord at Kuildeous#3231 if there are any obvious problems. You might want to spread the word among other Codenames players to let them know of this update. Or not. Surprise them with new CHEESE or JOAN OF ARC.

Rules question: are we allowed to continue to talk about our turn, when it's the other teams turn to guess? How about after your guesses but before our next clue?I think no. I mean, a simple reaction to electric being neutral is fine, but I don't think it's ok to say more really.
I think the answer to both these is yes, but I wanted to make sure.
