Title: Amyitis: Building the Hanging Gardens (Game Over: eHalcyon is the winner!)

Quote
In Amyitis the players are rival architects competing to earn the most prestige building one of the seven wonders of the ancient world: the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. The game is named after the daughter (or granddaughter) of Cyaxares, the king of the Medes, who married King Nebuchadnezzar II, ruler of Babylon. The myth says that Amytis' homesickness for the forested mountains of the Median Empire led to the construction of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, as Nebuchadnezzar attempted to please her by planting the trees and plants of her homeland.

The players embody noble Babylonians in quest of prestige. All along the game, they strive to raise their status by building gardens and their irrigation network, and by trading and recruiting. At the end of the game, the player with the highest prestige is the winner.

In this game the players compete to build gardens, acquire plants, hire craftsmen, build irrigation and trade with ancient cities. Points can also be gained from building your palace and controlling the temples. On a turn the players chose one of the following actions: a) Recruit a craftsman, that grants an action (priest on temple, resource, irrigation or camel) b) Move the caravan (to purchase plant or court card or trade) c) Pass to potentially gain income. It is an interactive game where a player's actions directly affect the other players.

This is the first (and quite likely only) F.DS game on Amyitis. I don't have a huge amount to add, other than read the rules, and ask me about any queries relating to them (either here or in PM).

Players (order randomised):
Kirian
ghostofmars
eHalcyon

If you think I can present anything better, please suggest it. I already want to know how to give tables fixed width because this information looks pretty cramped...

Oh, also, if people want to pick a colour that would probably help make the spreadsheet easier to read (try and stick to simpler things like red/blue/etc.). Not necessary but yeah.

Caravan begins on Babylon, right?  Just want to make sure I'm understanding the spreadsheet there.  I can't seem to find in the rules where the caravan begins, but Babylon makes the most sense.

I am tempted to use all my camels, but I don't want you all to get more talents.

I'll pass.  For Procession, I will put myself in Marduk.

It's in the first bullet point in preparation.

It is Babylon, yes. I think it's on the setup page right at the start, without checking. You can see the Caravan's location both in my postly updates and on the Mesopotamia board.

Anyway, well remembered on the Procession. That's been resolved (eHalc gets a cube on Marduk, the other two temples get neutral cubes).

Ishtar: Kirian chooses between a talent or a camel
Marduk: eHalc gets 2 Prestige (awarded)
Tammouz: ghost places a cube on one of the farms, taking the relevant resource.

PPE: Well, that was easy.

I think that Ishtar is meant to happen first, but I doubt it's going to affect decisions this early. Either way, if the winner of Tammouz ever wants to wait until Ishtar is resolved, feel free to do so. Otherwise, just do it in whatever order.

Nobody has 3 or more resources, so no discarding to limit.

Round ends. Nobody gets income at the start of round 2.

Everything updated. Also added a prestige breakdown, mainly for my own benefit but you can all see it too.

Also a minor note on forum game houserules. They're very minor but just so everyone is aware.
1) Tokens are unlimited (Talents, Camels, Resources, and also player cubes). They're in ample supply IRL so this doesn't seem like it'll affect anything. Note that Gardeners are still limited to 4.
2) You can see both sides of the plant cards on Mesopotamia all the time. You've already been able to do this since I made the sheet. It's pretty minor to irrelevant since you probably won't be planning that far ahead early in the game (and once two plants have flipped over you know all of them forever anyway).

I haven't.  I'm just working off of standard Eurogame play principles.  I do think there's a lot of possible jockeying for position where you wont' want to take action X because it allows another player to do action Y...
Title: Re: Amyitis: Building the Hanging Gardens

Yeah, I don't really know what to prioritize here.  I am sad that I'm all but out of the race for a Gardener in either field though.

I think I will pay $1 for the remaining Engineer.  Column D between the Palace and Gardener spots.

Quick question, for the Craft cards, what is the distribution from the draw deck?  Looks like 4 Merchants, 4 Peasants, 3 Engineers, 3 Priests?

I move the caravan forward one space for 1 Camel, buy the Quality-1 plant for 1 Salt, and take the Palace/2 Prestige tile (B11).

I think all of that works.

Yep. Building the garden is slightly complex so a few things happen:

eHalc gets 1 prestige for irrigating. The plant card is flipped over. The garden tile is removed.

I don't think you can do that.  As far as I can tell, you have no camels remaining.  When it says "Camels +2" on the Caravaneer 1 tile, it just means that when you move, you get to move camels spent +2 spaces total (always with minimum 1 camel spent).  I don't think it's a bonus when you pick up the tile.

Welll, you could have.  You had everything you needed to visit Khorsabad and plant.  Now you have given me a tough choice.  I could spend 2 camels to go to Hinoua (like I had been planning, except for 1 camel after you'd planted) or I could plant instead...

No, I don't have the right two resources.

Man, I was all ready to go for a big move, but then I got cold feet.  Here is what I had typed up:

Quote
Kirian passed.
ghost is already passed, so he gets $1.
I pay $1 for Group 3 Engineer, irrigating D8 and getting 2VP.
Kirian and ghost are both passed, so both get $1.
I pay 1 Camel to move to Khorsabad, paying Barley and Wine (as Dates) and planting in B8, receiving 3VP and Caravaneer.  I get another 1VP for Irrigation bonus.
Kirian and ghost are both passed, so both get $1.
I pass.

I'm just not sure all the benefits are worth the cost.

So instead:

Kirian passed.
ghost is already passed, so he gets $1.
I pay 2 Camels to go to Hinoua, paying Wine (as Palm) for Caravaneer.
Kirian and ghost both get another $1.
I pass.

eHalc gets 2 points from Marduk. Kirian gets 1 point.

eHalc chooses either a Camel or a Talent from Marduk. ghost gets the other.

Kirian gets to take a peasant action. Then Kirian will have to discard down to 2 resources.

Quote
Group 2 Peasant
Group 2 Merchant
Group 2 Priest
Group 2 Engineer
Group 1 Merchant
Group 1 Peasant
Group 2 Peasant
Group 1 Peasant
Group 1 Merchant

That's five Group 2s and four Group 1s.  That is also 4 Peasants, 3 Merchants, 1 Priest and 1 Engineer.  Obviously I need to take Group 1 Priest to make everything nice and orderly.  I'll put him in Tammouz.

Edit: And it looks like you still haven't deleted that Salt from my inventory in the spreadsheet.

Title: Re: Amyitis: Building the Hanging Gardens
Post by: ghostofmars on March 18, 2015, 09:20:34 pm
It should still be only 1vp bonus. The bonus is equal to the original quality of the plant excluding the gardener.

Quote from: rules
NB: Gardener cards used by the player do not affect the irrigation bonus. The bonus is dependent on the base quality of the plant

I wait with my move until Kirian confirms that he doesn't wants to change his move.

Maybe you should get your Amy removed.

Yeah. That was a lot of stuff. Downside of the mod being on a different continent to the players I suppose.

As far as I can tell, the primary reason to have a mod is to randomize the craftsmen each round.  Maybe we could do that ourselves when it is more convenient, using the forum dice rolling feature?

I'm not super familiar with it, but here's an attempt.  The idea is that I will roll a d1000 for each card.  If there are any ties, discount and re-roll.  In a subsequent post, sort them from highest to lowest, taking the top 3 for group 1, the next 3 for group 2, the next 3 for group 3 and ignoring the rest.  (For the rolls, totals don't matter.)

Merchants:
Rolled 4d1000 : 758, 786, 575, 294, total 2413

Peasants:
Rolled 4d1000 : 281, 4, 986, 584, total 1855

Priests:
Rolled 3d1000 : 348, 15, 879, total 1242

Engineers:
Rolled 3d1000 : 143, 527, 222, total 892
Title: Re: Amyitis: Building the Hanging Gardens
Post by: eHalcyon on March 20, 2015, 04:40:41 pm
So we have:

Peasant 986
Priest 879
Merchant 786

Merchant 758
Peasant 584
Merchant 575

Engineer 527
Priest 348
Merchant 294

Peasant 281
Engineer 222
Engineer 143
Priest 15
Peasant 4

And we get:

Group 1Group 2Group 3
PeasantMerchantEngineer
PriestPeasantPriest
MerchantMerchantMerchant

(Please note, I am not saying to use this result right now.  Just a suggestion for the group.)

Yeah, randomising craftsmen is the only significant thing, also rules checking and verifying everything is okay I guess. But I do like crafting games into spreadsheets and seeing how they work, it's almost a hobby by this point, so there's that.

Anyway from temples, ghost gets 2 Prestige and 1 Talent. Round ends.

I think it is hilarious that I seem to have the least money every round despite having the biggest Banker.

Well, the way money flows in this game is unusual due to the passing bonus and what money is spent on. More money mostly just means more actions each turn, which in turn also means more money for others... which means they can take more actions the following turns. And people have saved their money a little a few times now due, so it doesn't really surprise me.

You're correct. I've moved the priests in that temple back a spot (I don't remember what should have been in the final spot but it doesn't matter since it'll get pushed off in Procession).

You're right. I've changed that now. The merchant in group 1 is actually a priest (he had to don disguise to get into Babylon, okay?)

If anyone who has already moved thinks this affects what they did let me know and we can revert.

Group 1 Priest to Marduk.

I am surprised that you planted now instead of taking a craftsman first.

Out of curiosity, what would you two have done if I had taken a craftsman instead of moving?  I was debating it.  I didn't want to make it easy for Kirian to get the next palace, but at the same time I was worried that ghost might jump ahead to Ur and maybe even scoop Caravaneer out from under me.  There was also an outside chance that Kirian would go to Babylon (making it easier for ghost) or actually spend 3 camels to jump ahead to Susa (though my guess was that Kirian would have passed).  I think I probably could have gotten away with waiting on the caravan move, but I didn't want to risk it.

Of course, feel free not to answer or even to lie.  It might influence my decisions in the future. :P

It was always there, I put that section there so you can see what all of your cards are doing for you rather than just seeing the card numbers. But I accidentally had it checking for Banker level 2 rather than 3 to give you the prestige income, oops.

I think Babylon refers to moving the caravan to Babylon and selling resources for vp. Btw., why has Kirian 9vp from Babylon when he only sold 2 resources?

Yes, I believe you are right.  I think Tables must have had the same confusion I did.  Kirian should have 5/6  rather than 2/9 for Garden/Babylon.

Automatic irrigation occurred from ghost's garden tile building which actually matters (now every vertex of the garden is irrigated!). Also note the level 5 Palace has gone, meaning there's only three more court card upgrades available (and a Gardener is back available again as well).

It's the tiles column (column D) of the play resources tab. It mostly doesn't matter for recording but of course will give some players 5/10 prestige at the end of the game.

What is the probability that none of a certain craftsman appears in the draft?  There are 4 Merchants, 4 Peasants, 3 Priests, 3 Engineers.  We choose 9.  This is combinations without replacement, but with duplicates.  It's been so long since I learned Combinations, I don't really remember how to do this.

For a given type, it would be (chance first isn't that type) * (chance 2nd isn't that type) * ... * (chance last isn't that type), which simplifies with factorials quite nicely in this case to (10!/1!)/(14!/5!) = 5/1001 for Peasants or Merchants (roughly 0.2% each), and (11!/2!)/(14!/5!) = 5/182 for Priests or Engineers (roughly 2.7% each). Putting these together and simplfying gives a 5/77, or roughly 6.5% chance of one type of craftsman being missing.

Note to self: Caravaneer is top priority in any future game.

In my 2nd game I didn't get a caravaneer, and won. Then again I had the level 3 banker. I think you definitely want some advancements in one of those though, otherwise you end up too limited on options - few talents to recruit who you need, and needing to spend multiple camels to move around once.

For the record, ghost, if you pass, I will also pass, so you can go ahead and do procession stuff in that case.  I'm still going to have Tammouz for sure, and I will be taking Palm in field 2.

If you aren't passing yet, I may act as well.

I tend to favour flexibility in games.  It's why my favourite wonders for 7 Wonders are Ephesos and Alexandria.  Banker and Caravaneer felt like priorities to me because of that.  Then I had some good luck to allow me to reach Banker 3.  Then I went for Caravaneer 2 for maximum camel.  I think I was planning for that above Palace, though ghost decided for me when he took Palace.

I missed that Banker gives a point income per turn, though you were lucky that we had several turns in a row where only one peasant was available which lead to a longer game.

I'd thought about prolonging the game when I first got Banker 3.  But when I realized how steeply Palaces climbed, I actually started trying to end the game earlier.  If you look at the points, I've gotten less out of Banker than you have out of Palaces (granted, with much less investment).  If I had wanted to stall, I wouldn't have irrigated and planted as much as I have.  Instead, I would have fought more for Marduk and visited Babylon repeatedly.

I'm curious if this game has actually gone on longer than average.

Anyway... I spend 1 Camel to go to Ur, paying my remaining Palm to plant.  I will use both of my remaining Gardeners to raise the quality to tier 3 and I will plant in B2.  (I just remembered last night that you only need Q3 for that spot too.)  I get 10 prestige.  There is no irrigation bonus to anybody.

Kirian gets $1 for being passed.

ghost takes his turn, whatever it is.  I will then pass no matter what.  ghost can do procession as he will.  I will still be taking Palm from Field 2 after that.

But really, looking at the point spread, I've got 14 points from Banker and 15 points from Garden tiles (not counting this most recent move, which only took 1 Palm anyway).  That's 29 points.  With your resources, you've gotten 31+6 = 37 points with your peasants (not counting the possible points you can get if you plant now).  You've gotten more points with your resources than I have.  My extra points over you are mostly from engineers and irrigation bonuses, which I think stem more from the talents income.

It's Kirian's turn to do procession.

If you look only at the ROI on the resources spent on the tile cards:
You spent 3 resources for Banker to get 14+x points. I spent 6 resources on palace to get 31 points.
So in both cases, we earned ~5vp per resource, but your investment also pays 2$ per turn.

Oops.  Right, Kirian does Procession; my bad!

The Palace route also costs more camels.  The trick there is that it also gives you more flexibility in moving the caravan (more spots you can potentially visit), which is a benefit in itself.

You could have gotten the $2 too; Banker 2 is still available to you. :P

For what it's worth, I feel like this game has indeed gone on quite a bit longer than average - lots of rounds with few resources from peasants (I'd be curious to actually check after the game exactly how many there has been compared to average), and almost all court cards have been bought, which is a big resource investment. I don't know how many rounds my first game went on but my second I know was 8, since everyone did procession exactly twice (there is no reward for calculating the number of players in the game). I think that was faster than average, mind. I would say 9-10 rounds is likely average, based on quite limited information. Also, just as a note, I believe the score track goes up to 80 on the board. Make what you will of that.

I tend to favour flexibility in games.  It's why my favourite wonders for 7 Wonders are Ephesos and Alexandria.  Banker and Caravaneer felt like priorities to me because of that.

Thing is, Caravaneer is two different types of flexibility in one card.  Not only do you have the run of the caravan board, you can also keep more resources.  Those two things really feed off of one another; I've done essentially nothing these last two rounds because I didn't have enough camels to reach the one spot I could pay for usefully... and then you skipped over it entirely.  And no reason to take peasants, because I can't keep the resources.  So... yeah.  It doesn't help that at the start I thought there were 3 Caravaneer cards.

Anyway.  I place my cube in Marduk for the extra points, then take a camel for Ishtar.

Post by: Kirian on April 08, 2015, 05:01:16 pm
For the record, I'm bitching here about what seems to me like poor game design, in two things.  As I said, Caravaneer gives so much flexibility compared even to Banker.  Being able to lock one player out of both of them means creating a kingmaker.

Also, the card design is such that I thought the points on the Palace cards were *income* rather than just a flat one-time gain.

@Tables, So your 8-round game was with 4 players, right?  I figure that it must go faster (in terms of rounds) with 4.

@Kirian, the extra storage is only on Caravaneer 2, and I've never used it.  I also felt a bit bad each time I made a move that skipped over the space you were aiming for, but that was just the better move for me.  (I did realize after planting at Khorsabad that I maybe could have ended the game this round if I'd planted at Mari instead; if you then went to Khorsabad, I could have closed it down.)  This round, I think you could have taken Peasant for Palm.  If I then planted in Ur (which I would not have done -- I would have taken the Priest), you could have spent 2 Camels for Mari instead.  Maybe not ideal, but workable.

The confusion over available court cards at the start definitely wasn't helpful.

PPE: I think Palaces were clearly not income.  They looked just like the blues in 7 Wonders.  Also, that heavy amount of points income sounds like it would be incredibly broken.

Caravaneer definitely seems important.  I figure that if you see yourself getting locked out of it (just due to the resources others are getting and such) then you have to make sure you get something else.  Banker for income, or race ahead for solid Palace points.  Maybe both.

Yeah, sorry about the confusion with court cards at the start. I tried, I'm just not perfect :(.

Palace Cards. For what it's worth, I wasn't sure if they were income or one time points at first, but I did lean towards it being one time after I thought about, uh, 10 points per turn sounds a little too crazy.

For the record, I'm bitching here about what seems to me like poor game design, in two things.  As I said, Caravaneer gives so much flexibility compared even to Banker.  Being able to lock one player out of both of them means creating a kingmaker.

I agree that missing both is bad, and could lead to kingmaker scenarios, and I do think the Caravaneers seem really flexible, but I don't think missing them is the end of the world. There are supposed to be some strong strategies that never get Caravaneers, and I think that to some degree putting some pressure on to try and get one of them early on is fine - considering, again, you can do fine without one.

As for your other point about finding it hard to get places, I think that's one of the main strengths to Caravaneer, is hindering others and restricting their options. You want to spend generally only 1-2 Camels to move the Caravan, so you can get really hindered if you don't have the cavaneer. I dunno how I feel about that game design wise though.

I'm looking at session reports on BGG right now and it definitely sounds like people have had different experiences with it.  Comments about games where somebody won without any court cards at all, or only Palaces, or whatever.  The data is sparse though.

It might be worth checking out some games here (http://en.boardgamearena.com/#!gamepanel?game=amyitis), if you're curious. I don't know if there's an easy way to check finished games, but whatever.

I think, if you don't have a Caravaneer, you have to be very wary about what everybody can reach, try to predict where they will go, and plan accordingly.  Like, the first time I zoomed past Kirian's intended location in round 10 (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=12655.msg477483#msg477483).  I did that instead of taking a cheap $1 Priest or Engineer because Kirian had just taken a Merchant.  That gave him 2 camels, enough to reach Khorsabad to plant.  That was already kind of worrying because I wanted to plant in tier 2 as well.  Worse, if Kirian did that planting, it would also allow ghost to plant in Eshnunna before me.  So I moved first to make sure I could plant.

There are only 4 left, so this is it.

I7 is already neutrally filled.  Do you mean I10 or I4?

Oh wait, you probably mean K7, with the I being the tier level. :P

Assuming I am correct, I'll take the Group 1 Engineer to H10.

I believe Kirian must pass.  He doesn't have enough talents to get the remaining Merchant, and he can't use the location that takes Dates.

Unfortunately, I could not wait long enough for eHalcyon to move :(

Spend my remaining camels to go to Khorsabad, Gardener + Dates + Salt = 8vp + 2vp (irrigation bonus).

Pass after eHalcyon's turn. Procession to Marduk

1 camel to go to Babylon, selling nothing and irrigating in the last spot available, just for kicks.

Kirian gets $1. ghost passes.

1 camel to Ur, plant in H11 for 2VP, $2 and 1VP irrigation bonus.

Others each get $1.

I take last Merchant so I end with a breeding pair of camels.

Others get $1.  I pass.

For Tammouz, I take Palm for the shade.

I wasn't checking exactly things like camels and talents, since they don't affect endgame scoring, so they might be off by one or two. I gave Kirian a Camel from Ishtar.

Endgame scoring: Everyone has one resource so gets 1 Prestige.
Amyitis's favour: eHalc has built 6 tiles, and so gets 10 Prestige. Kirian has built 4 tiles, and so gets 5 Prestige.

Final Scores:

3rd: Kirian - 59
2nd: ghostofmars - 72
1st: eHalcyon - 94

Congratulations eHalc, and well done to everyone else! I hope you all enjoyed the game, I enjoyed running this one.

Cheers.  It was fun!

For anybody interested, here are my notes (http://www.quicktopic.com/51/H/VuFMMHgMLnNS).  It might be hard to follow though.

There was one moment early on that I thought was really lucky for me.  It was the round just after ghost had gotten both Caravaneer and Banker.  Only a single Merchant came up and I was first to pick, so ghost was left unable to move at all that round and Kirian was pretty limited.  I was able to leverage that to get Caravaneer for myself and set up to get Banker 2 and Banker 3 the round after.

That was also the round where Kirian had some really weird bad luck where he somehow had the wrong resources to plant and I got confused too.

Okay, so I'm gonna have a look at all the recruitments as a breakdown...

There, I've added a tab to the spreadsheet, https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1pmolfTSogaebDJo_qDpkmUkpvmd5QPl9dtVo4wmoqZI/edit#gid=535831188 so everyone can see the numbers. In short:

There was definitely a significant shortage of peasants compared to average, and a glut of Merchants and Priests in it's place. Engineers were just slightly below average in representation.

Turns 8 onwards had actually a very close to average mix of cards, overall over the 5 turns. About the only way it could have been more average is if one of the Merchants was a Priest at some point. So most of the uneven weight happened before that point.

The peasant count was definitely way below average. Not once were all 4 peasants drawn, and in fact rarely were 3 peasants drawn - only once in the first half of the game. The biggest disparity as a percentage of the averagewas turn 7, by which point only 2/3rds of the average number of peasants had been drawn. From there, their draw rate was about average - it stayed at roughly -6 from the mean for the last few turns.

Perhaps less noticable due to it not causing such an issue was the overabundance of Merchants. Only once did a lone Merchant come out (the round that eHalc was talking about earlier), and both before and after that, an above average number of Merchants were drawn. I think this showed - not only were people passing up Merchants regularly, but people still had multiple camels left at the end of the game.

The Engineer count was pretty close to average throughout the game. Well, just below average, but over this many samples that's close enough to call average.

Priests went the other way to Engineers, and were mostly average for a bit... but then suddenly came out in huge numbers around the midgame. Three rounds with three priests in a row is kinda a lot.

Overall, the obvious deviation from the average was peasants and to a lesser degree merchants. A real shortage of peasants meant more time was spent fighting for those Tammouz actions, I noticed, and the peasants all went quickly.

For a while, I thought there were only 3 Peasants among all the cards.  Can you also breakdown how much of each craftsmen were taken by each player?  Also, who got 1st/2nd most often from each temple?

I definitely think that the $2 income from Banker was more valuable than the points.  If you take away my 16 Banker points I still have the lead, but I wouldn't have been able to do so much planting and irrigating without the talents income.

That's too much effort for me, sorry. It was easy to do the overall craftsmen, since I could just ctrl+f for "round number: X" and find the first post of each round. Doing more requires going through every post in the thread.

Wow, I read your notes. You invested way more into this game than I did.

For the record: Here are the number of extra turns* that each player had: Kirian - 2, Ghost - 10, eHalcyon - 15 which relates roughly to the banker income (Kirian - 0, Ghost - 10, eHalcyon - 18). Interestingly, from turn 4 onwards, Kirian always had to pass first.

*I count as an extra turn if you take a turn when everybody else has passed or if a player other than the start player passes, so that the start player gets to act more.

That's what I do with online games. :P  I like the analytical bits of it but I can't really do that IRL (without taking an obscene amount of time).  Playing online, it's totally OK to spend 5 minutes thinking through the ramifications of each choice and considering what the others might be doing.  IRL, I have to estimate more broadly.  I'm pretty good at this in some games (7 Wonders) and kinda bad at it in others (Small World, The Ancient World).

Tracking issues are the reason why I don't like playing 7 Wonders without expansion anymore. I feel that I more or less understand the strategy of the game and to improve I would need to increase the amount of information I track. Without that it feels a bit too random for me, because your strategy can be ruined by clustering of important cards.
