If there's no other +buy on the board, I sometimes get Death Cart in the desperate hope there's Ruined Market somewhere in there.

1227
Duchess + Scrying Pool
It's neat that Scrying Pool can basically negate the deck inspection thing that Duchess gives your opponent. Duchess is also just a good cheap payload that Scrying Pool can draw.

1228
Inheriting Great Hall or Scout is totally amazing.

1229
The main thing is, why would you ever want to do it more than once? Unless what you're suggesting is like Prince, where when you play the Estate, you first play one card, then play another, in any order.

Dominion General Discussion / Masquerade
« on: October 07, 2017, 01:28:13 am »
Masquerade has become one of my most hated cards, and I might ban it if I could. The constant threat of being forced to pass your opponent a good card in exchange for junk just screws over so many other aspects of the game. It feels like Possession in that you have to keep your deck crummy so that your opponent can't take advantage of it. Even though it's one of the oldest cards, it's one of the cards I least understand. So, what I'm wondering:

-Should you not even bother with other trashers when it's on the board, simply because trashing down too fast will just give good cards to your opponent?

-Are there any times it can be ignored? The only situation I can think of is Ambassador, which is a great counter because it's also a card that can thin and junk at the same time. Are there any other situations?

-What about other junking attacks? Should you not bother with them because your opponent can just fling the junk back at you? It seems to me that Mountebank and Cultist are fast enough to bury an opponent who's relying solely on Masquerade, but the other junkers I'm not sure.

-Is buying more than one of them ever a good idea?

-Is passing good cards to your opponent just not that big a deal sometimes? Can you trash all the way down and build an engine so good that it can shrug off all of Masquerade's mischief?

Any help on dealing with this insane card would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Bandit Camp/Marauder + Alms
Don't know if this has been mentioned yet. Spoils don't count as in play when you buy Alms because they've been returned to the pile. You can abuse this if you also have +buy. Buy your expensive luxury card with the Spoils, then cheat the local charity out of a $4 card as well.

Throne Room and Kings Court are both in the kingdom...

I play Library Big Money

King's Court is great with Library. You'll draw one extra card because the King's Court is no longer in your hand.

The Pirate Ship - Scrying Pool combo is totally the thing to go for.

Man I just encountered the most awkward Undo situation ever: Accidentally clicking the wrong card on an opponent's Advisor. I didn't bother to ask for the Undo because I was going to lose anyway, but if someone can think of a more awkward Undo to ask for, I'd love to hear it.

Stonemason + Apothecary is a super strong combo. Get 2 Apothocaries with only 1 potion, then Stonemason your other Stonemasons and Estates into more coppers.

1236
You see, peasants are magicans in disguise.
It would be great if they could share their mystical knowledge with us. They should all become Teachers.

1237
Lurker + Hunting Grounds

That's actually a very strong combo. You can win the game in 9-10 turns by piling out on Lurkers, Hunting Grounds and Duchies.

Sure, I guess. I think the point was that if you are intending to pick up HGs, you'll get something else before you get them even if you didn't want it. Maybe Catacombs is a better choice, but it's easier to choke on the green.

Yeah, but his point is that if those two cards are on the board, the Duchy rush is pretty much always going to be a better strategy than whatever fancy pants engine is possible.

1238
Highway is a great counter to Enchantress.

And so is Groundskeeper.

If you do have a Watchtower in hand, Rats become a Lab that trashes a card (but they can't trash the second card drawn.)

It can trash the second card, actually. The Rats-gaining happens before the trashing. So yeah, it's exactly the same as a trashing Lab. Also, in regards to whether this combo was mentioned before, I think pretty much every single Watchtower combo ever is mentioned in liopoil's excellent article, including this one.

Forum + Defiled Shrine
You can use Forum's +buy thing as an opportunity to buy a Curse.  Forum then helps you sift through the Shrine Curses you bought.

C plays a King's Court.
C plays a King's Court.
C plays a Lurker.
C gains a Wine Merchant.
C plays a Lurker again.
C trashes a Wine Merchant.
C plays a Lurker a third time.
C gains a Wine Merchant.
C plays a King's Court again.
C plays a Herald.
C draws a Copper.
C reveals a Copper.
C plays a Herald again.
C draws a Copper.
C shuffles their deck.
C reveals a Wine Merchant.
C plays a Wine Merchant.
C puts a Wine Merchant on their Tavern mat.
C plays a Herald a third time.
C draws a Copper.
C reveals a Wine Merchant.
C plays a Wine Merchant.
C puts a Wine Merchant on their Tavern mat.
C plays a King's Court a third time.
C plays a Wine Merchant.
C puts a Wine Merchant on their Tavern mat.
C plays a Wine Merchant again.
C plays a Wine Merchant a third time.

I ended up with something like 7 Wine Merchants on my mat. It wasn't quite enough to end the game, sadly. I ended up losing because my opponent got a head start with an amazingly lucky Count/Lurker opening. I would have beat him if it weren't for that, because he was clearly misplaying it.

Secret Passage + Loan

In a game with no way to trash Estates and limited draw, Secret Passage and Loan were a big synergy.  I used the Secret Passages to make sure Loan hit a Copper and skipped over a bunch of green.  After a few turns, Loan was able to skip over all my green.  And once I ran out of Copper, I could bottom-deck all my green and skip past it when I played Loan.
Navigator + Loan
Back when Seaside was the latest and greatest, an opponent used the former to set up all victory cards to be closest to the top of the deck, while the copper would be on the behind them.
Wasn't Prosperity after Seaside? Maybe I misunderstood what you meant by "latest."

1243
You reflexively giggle at the word "scout."

Conditional non-mandatory cantrip (multi-)trashing for 4 is already brilliant in and of itself.

Not at the beginning of the game. First you have to buy a Silver, then you have to collide the two. There are plenty of other cheap trashers that are faster.

The main thing I dislike about Saunavanto is that there are an odd number of each. If Sauna is the only splitter, then the first player can have a strong advantage. This is a potential problem with all split piles, but it's particularly bad with this one.

I think in general split piles would gain something from being 6/6 instead off 5/5 it makes for even numbers in 2 and 3 players, and adds another card to improve "make your opponent dig through the whole top half" strategies.

Ah, semi-ninja'd. Yes, this would have been a better idea. Come to think of it, I'm a bit surprised Donald didn't do this. This already sort of has precedent in Port. Though the unfairness factor of 10 would be even worse with the Port pile.

1246
I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but gaining Sir Martin with Messenger is nice.
I think somebody mentioned Messenger with Castles. Different pile, same idea.

1247
Another problem is that for Chariot Race, Scrying Pool itself counts as a measly $2.

1248
Rats can function as a way to discard junk from your hand for Lookout, Sentry or other purposes.

Especially nice with Doctor, since you know what the junk is going to be.

1249
I think this falls squarely in the "potentially harmful" category rather than the "Oh wow, that did not work at all" category that fits some of these others. I don't think I'd aim for this strategy, but if forced into Gardens, Armory is better than nothing.

Well, if you read the OP, you'll see that this thread was originally supposed to be about synergies that aren't as strong as they look at first due to one or more annoying factors. It got hijacked fairly early on, though. I mean, there are lots of cards that just plain don't work with each other, at all. Those pairings just aren't all that interesting to point out, though.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: The Value of Loan
« on: September 24, 2017, 08:33:51 pm »
It's definitely underrated. Its drawbacks are only magnified by perception, I think. The fact that it's "only" a Copper on play is actually pretty good considering its other abilities. The fact that it can only trash treasures is a problem, but really, trashing 7 practically-junk cards is almost always better than trashing 3 completely-junk cards. Then there's the fact that it can trip over your good treasures, but even that's not completely terrible, because treasures are stop cards and engine creep continues to make treasures worse anyway. The comparison with Lookout is apt; both are solid trashers with unfortunate drawbacks that can make them seem worse than they actually are. Hey, maybe we'll see its Qvist ranking improve because of this discussion. Though it'll be interesting to see how Heirlooms affect it.

Also, all of this should probably be in the Let's Discuss section.
