Goko Dominion Online / People on Goko vs Isotropic?
« on: September 29, 2012, 12:22:25 am »
So I've been stalking Goko for a couple days now, and I noticed I don't really see usernames that I recall spotting on Isotropic. Has this been other people's experience-- does it seem most people aren't Isotropic veterans? Or are you all just changing your names? Of course I realize that a lot of users could have changed their names, but I feel like I would recognize at least one...

(Of course, there's the fact that Isotropic players are relatively polite in my experience, and a lot of Goko games have ended with my opponents ragequitting and cussing...)

Clearly we should bribe DougZ to implement Tanto Cuore instead.

Always kind of wondered how Arclight got away with it... Maybe because the cards are weaker and the game is therefore not quite as fun.

So it should be okay if isotropic is "Dominion, but not as good!"

They got away with it because the game is a really different variant if delved into. Base set Tanto Cuore and base set Dominion are really different game strategically even if some of the card effects are similar and the goal is similar.

I have Base and Expanding the House for Tanto Cuore, but aside from a little weirdness with private maids, chambering, and buildings, they really just feel like they could be a different expansion of Dominion (but of course, more expensive), certainly nothing as weird as the stuff coming in Dark Ages.

I guess I just feel like I don't have to adjust my thinking much to play Tanto Cuore (although I hear the same cannot be said of moe Nazi girl Dominion Barba Rossa, so I'm looking forward to that!)

Cool beans, will send a gift. I love your work-- thank you, and I will miss text mode Dominion! (Although I'll be starting a job I'll actually like, so I suppose that's good timing.)

On a complete side note, I don't really think of my appreciation of isotropic as part of a zero-sum-game where Goko has to lose out-- sure, it kind of sucks now, but I don't think it will in the future. I think the idea of not supporting the official product solely because the unofficial isotropic is so much better is a bit dangerous to unofficial, unlicensed labors of love, no? It gives some credence to the idea that these unofficial fan-created versions actively take away potential revenue for actual IP holders, which lead said holders of other properties to crack down and kill off potential awesome fan projects like isotropic. In a parallel and only slightly different universe, RGG shut down isotropic long ago because of this threat.

Not giving Goko money because they're lousy is one thing, but if isotropic's existence itself influenced that decision-- if, had isotropic not existed, we were all so desperate for online Dominion that we hurled cash at Goko without a thought-- then I think it's our responsibility as consumers to support the spirit of fan creation and prevent IP holders from viewing them as a threat. It's in the same way that pure pirates who never purchase music or movies can't make the argument that piracy leads to more eyeballs and thus more sales; as someone who does pirate things, I feel somewhat obligated to also support various media industries as much as I can, so that I can at least personally justify my behavior. isotropic's definitely no pirate project, but I think you get the idea.

Just my two cents...

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Funsockets Payment Model
« on: August 13, 2012, 11:48:19 am »
I think a buck per expansion is pretty unreasonably low. I'd be willing to pay some amount at which all the sets together are about the cost of one large physical expansion or a AAA video game-- maybe $5 for big expansions and $3 for small.

If it ends up being much more than that-- maybe $10-15 per expansion-- I still think it'd be reasonable, but I won't buy every set-- I'll probably just buy a few of my favorite expansions (Prosperity, Seaside, Alchemy, Cornucopia, I suppose) and hope that other players have the other sets. Alternatively, I'll just buy one on opening day and add another expansion every couple months when I can afford it.

You realize most full games in the iTunes store sell for between $0.99 and $5, right?

As someone who is making an iOS game that is not Angry Birds, I feel like I just have to say "You realize that most people making those $1 games can't use the profits to afford to eat, right?"

Mobile games have really changed customers' perception of a reasonable price, and unfortunately, game devs can't always afford to meet these demands.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Official Version Launching 8/16?

As long as we have the ability to create really long usernames with weird Unicode and spaces, I will be happy. Because Dominion joke usernames are amazing.

<-- doesn't actually have such a username

But in all seriousness, I totally don't mind having to pay for expansions and stuff; I just hope the ranking, stats and achievements available through isotropic and Council Room are possible!!

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Greatest Isotropic Moments of 2012

http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20120711-114038-f232438a.html

So it's a four player game, I've got King's Courts, Stables, and money galore, and one of my opponents keep having their king hold court in council rooms-- pretty awesome! But  the first player to buy early Possession just so happens to be to my right, and he keeps possessing my wonderful eight-card starting hands, using my deck to buy Provinces rather consistently while my sloppy seconds five-card hands can't really do that-- pretty terrible!

Except his mad rush for points and slight misunderstanding of Possession's effects results in this:

Quote
   --- minakichan's turn (possessed by Omy29) ---
   minakichan plays a King's Court.
   ... and plays a King's Court.
   ... ... and plays a Stables.
   ... ... ... discarding a Silver.
   ... ... ... drawing 3 cards and getting +1 action.
... ... and plays the Stables again.
   ... ... ... discarding a Copper.
   ... ... ... (minakichan reshuffles.)
   ... ... ... drawing 2 cards and getting +1 action.
... ... and plays the Stables a third time.
   ... ... ... discarding a Copper.
   ... ... ... (minakichan reshuffles.)
   ... ... ... drawing 1 card and getting +1 action.
... and plays the King's Court again.
   ... ... and plays a Bishop.
   ... ... ... getting +$1 and +1 ▼.
   ... ... ... minakichan trashes a Province and gets +4 ▼.
   ... ... ... TW2012 trashes nothing.
   ... ... ... Omy29 trashes a Copper.
   ... ... ... Badoosh trashes nothing.
... ... and plays the Bishop again.
   ... ... ... getting +$1 and +1 ▼.
   ... ... ... minakichan trashes a Copper.
   ... ... ... TW2012 trashes nothing.
   ... ... ... Omy29 trashes nothing.
   ... ... ... Badoosh trashes nothing.
... ... and plays the Bishop a third time.
   ... ... ... getting +$1 and +1 ▼.
   ... ... ... minakichan trashes a Gold and gets +3 ▼.
   ... ... ... Badoosh trashes nothing.
   ... ... ... TW2012 trashes nothing.
   ... ... ... Omy29 trashes nothing.
... and plays the King's Court a third time.
... ... but plays no action with it.
   minakichan plays 3 Silvers.
   minakichan buys a Province.
   ... Omy29 gains the Province.
   (minakichan reshuffles.)
(minakichan draws: a Stables, 3 Silvers, and a Bishop.)
minakichan discards the "trashed" cards (a Gold, a Copper, and a Province).

You might see the problem here, but my unfortunate opponent didn't: Yup, Possession says nothing about VP and they therefore all go to the possessed player. In this Possessed turn, he gains a 6-point Province but gives me 10 VP. This happened several times throughout the entire game-- even with some King's Courted Possessions-- and he usually Bishopped the biggest cards for the biggest number of points.

I dropped a few hints, and I know I probably should have explained the situation, but... it was kind of glorious for me and I wanted to see how far it could go (sorry, opponent!).

I think the best moment in the game is around turn 13 though-- another opponent gets a similar idea and plays King's Courts Possession, giving the last opponent (Badoosh) 29 VP without having to lift a finger. Unfortunately, it seems that Badoosh, as my only opponent who likely truly understood Possession, saw how I was getting unfair amounts of free VP and resigned just beforehand, missing out on this huge VP spike completely-- ouch!
