Both me and my opponent went for grand markets. I lost to his dukes and duchies.
Transitioning to duke/duchy from an engine is different from normal duchy game. How do you know when its time to go for it?

I think you start going for Duke, when you've finished building your engine.  Here it is when the grand markets run out.  The smugglers are really helpful for a Duke game.  I think your opponent used one to get a grand market, duchy and a duke.

You need to compete for duchies if your engine can't buy all of the provinces.  Here your engine has no card draw, so will start chocking pretty hard on provinces.  You need to compete for duchies.  6VP dukes for $5 should beat anyone going for provinces.

You need to either go for provinces or go for duchies, not take a little of both. That surrenders a majority of duchies to your opponent and leaves you unable to empty the provinces. You could have also considered scout and wishing well to assist in drawing through the deck as it turned green. If the scout grabs a green card then puts your grand markets above your gold then it is worth it.

There are a lot of ways to play this though.

So DG, does that mean in these situations its not a good idea to get dukes and duchies purely so u can deny your opponent them?

I think WW's Duke article, as it appears on the front page, is one of the best articles ever posted on dominionstrategy.com
