I work in a University Library. Pretty decent combo right there.

Passing junk is great because your opponent can't trash what you give them. They get it whether they like it or not. If they give you something you don't want, you can immediately get rid of it. If they give you something you don't mind, you can trash something worse that you were originally holding for effectively -2 bad cards, +1 better card (AND +1 bad card in your opponent's hand).

It's the passing junk to your opponent aspect that makes Masquerade one of the best cards in the game. The only other card that can do that is Ambassador. The trashing aspect of Masquerade is there so that even if your opponent passes you junk back, you're still better off for playing it. If he doesn't pass you junk, brilliant. All that and we haven't even mentioned the +2 cards aspect!

Apart from you didn't move the Steward to the top of your deck, or if you did, you didn't play it (You didn't because you had already played it that shuffle). Whatever you moved to the top of your deck (which was already there because you only had 1 card in your draw pile at the time) was drawn by your Caravan in the same turn. You then reshuffled before drawing the Steward for your next turn, by luck.

Puzzles and Challenges / Re: The Ultimate Legal Fairground
« on: July 08, 2011, 09:04:32 am »
You are excited. Today, you will build the ultimate Fairground, without that Black Market stuff.

You're not much for fighting in Tournaments either.

However, because you are a minimalist, your goal is to have exactly one copy of each card.

In a solitaire game with Fairground, Colony, and Young Witch, have exactly one copy of each card in supply in as few turns as possible, assuming perfect shuffle luck. (Goal of 10VP Fairground). If I forgot something as a workaround, let me know and I'll work it into the opening.

My name is Thisisnotasmile (TINAS for short). I live in the UK and stuff. I don't have a huge list of insulting names that you can call me...

Sure it's luck based on what is turned up, but that doesn't mean that it also isn't strategic on the decision to both buy Black Market and the decision to choose to buy the revealed cards or not.
This entire game has elements of luck in it, but that doesn't mean the game isn't strategic.
The more luck, the less strategy. If a mountebank comes up and I have enough money (which may be based on luck early game), it doesn't take an expert to see what to do, yet an expert will probably not be able to win against me, unless i mess things up royally.

Is it strategy to buy a card saying "Trash this card. Flip a coin, heads you win, tails you lose"? I had to make the decision to buy the card...

I think the point is it's strategy to say "There are no cursing or trashing cards on the board, but there's Mountebank and Witch in the Black Market, therefore I'm going to buy a Black Market". It's luck to actually pull them out, but it was strategy to give yourself more than a 0% chance to pull them out in the first place.

Tournaments and Events / Re: Competitive Dominion?

No. I think that would just encourage people to be in it purely for the money and make the event have a horrible atmosphere. Prizes that big would probably be more likely to dissuade me from attending rather than the other way around.

At my FLGS, £10 cash or £20 store credit.

National, £50 and some dominion goodies (promos, card sleeves, or something).

Worldwide, £100 + Trophy and maybe something like one of those turntable things that people have made on BGG.

Oh, and I didn't realized that none of the players posted the log. I think that is a different situation, I thought someone posted one of his games and let it discuss. But as an outsider just take a game and point out the failures of others, I don't know if I like this. So there I'm with Superdad.

I'd feel the same except ^_^_^_^ asked (in another thread) for this thread to be made. I don't know why (s)he didn't make it him/herself, but whatever.

Puzzles and Challenges / Re: Turn 4 Treasure map Action
« on: July 06, 2011, 06:28:19 am »
Open Treasure Map/Masquerade.  Draw the Masquerade on Turn 3 without the Treasure Map, and someone passes you a Watchtower.  Have enough Copper in your hand to buy another Treasure Map, putting it on top of your deck.  On Turn 4, draw the Treasure Map you bought last turn, along with the Treasure Map you bought in the opening.

The probability of this opening can only be calculated by a very horrifying sample of games...

If we're allowing Masquerade shenanigans:

Open Treasure Map/Nothing in seat 2. Turn 3 Player 1 plays Masquerade and passes you Treasure Map (He opened Masquerade/Treasure Map). You now hold your own TM and his for a turn 3 activation.

I'd be pretty impressed to see a Golem pull a loan.

That is an excellent point you bring up, and well stated.

I think the same could be said for Golem pulling a Throne Room and then a Lookout.

You'd have to have the lookout in your hand if you're going to TR it ;]

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Transmute
« on: July 05, 2011, 05:46:52 am »
I guess what he means is that trashing coppers -> transmutes increases your action density a lot faster than just trashing coppers, or just buying actions. Your scrying pools will then pick up a load more cards each time you play them. Obviously, you're not going to want to play your transmutes every time you draw them, but with them not being copper, they won't block the scrying pool. Late game you can then transmute your transmutes for extra VP.

1916
I could see some situations where Ringleader could really hurt you, in the same way that a Golem that pulls a Throne Room/Loan late game could hurt.

I'd be pretty impressed to see a Golem pull a loan.

Well normally, yeah, but we've been told that there is Coppersmith and we are opting for a Copper strategy.

Why would you spend $2P on a Scrying Pool when Apothecaries are available and you have a deck full of Potions and Coppers? Seems a waste of a buy to me.

And on the other hand, you can't assume every time you play the loan, you will be discarding a platinum. It all balances out whether you play it or not.

There are only 10 cards there. There should be 11 for a Young Witch game. Obviously the site which generated this set hasn't been adjusted to deal with bane cards, so none of the given cards are the bane. Choose your own 11th card if you're desperate to know what the bane is.

+$1 and -1 Platinum this shuffle is better than +1 Platinum this shuffle and your next hand is 5 green cards that your loan would have skipped over for you.

I've been stuck at 0. How do I get to level 1? :(
I have some of my games that I know the links to if it would help me to possibly ask for others to look over my games here and tell me what I'm doing wrong.

Play me. I can't seem to beat anyone anymore =[ You'll have to catch me on auto-match though.

I'm glad you won and all, but I'm getting a little tired of "I played bridge a lot of times and won" posts now.

SLUM is a Laboratory with an attack built in. How can it only cost $4? And did you SERIOUSLY originally price it at $2? I get that your SLUM could be discarded by someone else's, but likewise you can discard everyone else's SLUMs. To me, it's a minimum of $5 as an alternative to Laboratory.

I quite like how a quote from months ago got dug up and all of a sudden it's such a big deal. You should see the councilroom IRC channel. People are losing sleep over the fact that isotropic's suddenly dying out of the blue.
this is absurd! no one is losing any sleep! we had the same initial reaction that most people on the boards had, worried about the quality of the site and what the cost will be. I've been playing on iso since sep of last year and made many friends and bonds with some of the players and will be sad when it's gone.

That's exactly what I mean. I was simply pointing out to those who aren't on the irc, that this exact same reaction is going on else where. My main point remains though, that all of this over-reaction and whining and what-not has all been prompted by someone mentioning something that Donald said back in February. This didn't all happen back then, but it's happening now!

I'm having the same reaction as the first time it was metioned over four months ago. I feel that RGG have every right to do this and am not going to get upset about it. What's the point? They're not closing down isotropic and saying "if you want to play Dominion, play with your friends IRL". They could do that, but they're not. They're saying "Isotropic's going to close down because we're making an official product which will be in direct competition with it". This means that we'll still be able to play Dominion online. On an official RGG product. I'm perfectly fine with that, just like I was when I heard the news at the beginning of the year.
