F.DS Le Havre II (theorel wins)
« on: November 25, 2013, 05:25:10 pm »

I used the holidays to modify AHoppy's spreadsheet with some new features. You can find the game board here
Le Havre II
I merged buildings and ships in a single sheet and added a game log. Otherwise I swapped columns and rows for the resources.
The new board should be more comfortable for the mod, as it automatically tracks some resources.

Player order:
1) Archetype
2) Jorbles
3) AHoppy
4) theorel

Quote from: original message
As the first game is coming to an end, I thought about modding a new game, if there is sufficient interest. I think 4 players would be a good number. As AHoppy modded the first game, I'll reserve a spot for him, if he wants to play.

I can send you the spreadsheet template I created if you want it.  You'll have to randomize the buildings on your own, but you can use it to save you the trouble.  Or improve it.  Whatever

Thanks, that would be nice.

I was debating if I was enjoying the first game...I think I was sufficiently to try again.

Is it the game itself you aren't really enjoying, or my terrible modding? If the latter, I'm really sorry...  I need to pay more attention to details when updating and such...

Game itself.
As mentioned I'm going back and forth on it.  Probably because sometimes I have glimpses of larger strategy, while other times I'm just kind of lost in what's available.  I think things will start to make more sense as we close out that game, and I already have some ideas as to what I should do differently.  Ultimately, I'm willing to give it a second shot at least :)

Gotcha.  Yeah, the strategy is kinda wierd.  What I do is mostly play off of what other people are doing and keep up and build some kind of food generating engine.  Then somewhere in the last 7-8 rounds ish I start seeing what others are doing and take the path of least resistance.  And throughout, aim to have some key buildings.  Won't say what though :)

BTW: I'd be fine with playing just 3 people.  I prefer 3-player Le Havre, I think it's the optimal number.  But I'm also good waiting for 4.  Just not 5

I think, I will start this as soon as Le Havre I finishes or when a fourth player signs up.

I would be in on a game of Le Havre.  What does it entail?

If you are familiar with the rules, you don't need to do anything right now. Otherwise you can read them now. I quote the introduction from the first game here

So I have no idea how well this is going to work, but there has been some interest in playing Le Havre and I'm going to mod it!  Yay!  So while I'm working on the spreadsheet for the game, it would be nice to know how many players would be interested in playing.  So far theorel and Archetype have expressed interest.  Also: How well do you know the game already?  Thanks, and hopefully we'll be able to get a game going soon!

So I'm thinking either 3 or 4 players, so we need 1 or 2 more to get this going.  There is a lot of information for this game, so if you haven't played before it could be tough, but I think it will be manageable

Rules: http://www.boardgames.ro/LeHavreEN.pdf
Game link: The url is long, so click this

You can also have a look at the spreadsheet from the first game, which will look similar to the one I will use for the second game. The first game is drawing to its conclusion (last round) and this will start directly afterwards.

you move the thread yourself...below the thread on the left (under the "breadcrumb") you should see "Move Topic    Lock Topic".

A spreadsheet version of the game?  That is a novel idea.  Best put me on hold should someone more serious want to join.  Wasn't there an online playable version?  I thought I saw one on boardgamegeek.

I think for you as a player it doesn't matter much if the game is run in a spreadsheet. You post your action in this thread and then the moderator (in this case me) updates the spreadsheet accordingly.
The version that is available at BGG is requires a server and all player log into it. But it is not very suitable for forum games which are closer to PBeM games.

If you are interested in Le Havre then I would encourage you to play. The time per move is rather small in Le Havre (less than 5 min), but the game has a lot of turns (36 per player), so that you should be aware of the time commitment. If every player post on average every other day, the game will run ~2 months.

The game is ready to start, once all player are ready.

I propose a small rule change to make the game more suitable for forum play. The feeding takes place at the beginning of the turn after the end of the round. Then you don't have to wait for the next round until all players checked the thread at the end of a round. This change only matters, if you earn some entry fee at the beginning of the next turn.

Example for the feeding after the first round:
The second round starts with theorel, so he would feed and then select the action, then scottlieb feeds and takes an action, then Jorbles, then AHoppy.

What do you think?
