Possession and trashing Fortress

During a possessed turn, if you attempt to trash something, it is instead "set aside". As far as I know, that should mean any "if you do" clauses aren't triggered, nor any "when you trash this" clauses. Is this correct?

That's not correct. You don't set the card aside instead of trashing it, you set it aside after trashing it. Timingwise, setting aside a trashed card on a Possession turn is a when-you-trash effect, meaning that, a Possessing player gets to choose the order of (a) setting aside a trashed card, (b) activating its on-trash effects, (c) discarding Market Square.

With Fortress specifically, this means that the Possessing player is in effect deciding whether to put the Fortress back in hand or leave it set aside for the rest of the turn. This is the only known way to trash a Fortress and not have it go back into your hand immediately (though it still doesn't stay in the trash, of course).
