Apparently I cannot math, putting that one up was totally the wrong move.

$34 on 34

Pass
Buy the 39 at $39

To save us all some time making decisions, and because I've already done the math to determine what I should purchase, I claim the win:

Capacity: I have 17. Liopoil has 15.  Archetype has maximum 15, and Walrus maximum 12, based on optimal replacement (23 -> 36, 19 -> 34).  Andrew has 11.

Resources:  If Archetype and Walrus collude to force me to pay the maximum (which requires suboptimal replacement on Archetype's part, 33 -> 36), they can buy 4 Oil and 5 Uranium between them, forcing me to pay $19 for oil (6+6+7) and $7 for uranium, for a total of $26.  That leaves me with $197-$39-$26 = $132.

Cities:  No matter where Archetype and Walrus build, I'll be able to build into any city where they already both are.  That includes Kansas City ($28), St. Louis ($26), Oklahoma City ($28), Dallas ($23) and Houston ($25).  Total cost is $130.

That gives me 16 cities and the capacity to power 17, with $2 left over but no tie-breaker needed.

OK then, I assumed we were coming close to a forced win at some point. GG Kirian!

I think I misunderstood the rules or at least have played it differently in person. When it's my turn to put a plant up for auction and I pass, I can't bid on a plant somebody else puts up for auction?

That's correct.  It's one of the disadvantages of being in or near the lead.

GG all.  Yeah, I was wondering a bit why anyone was playing as though this weren't the final round, but I guess Andrew's confusion explains some of that.

Ok. Now I know. I'd be down for playing this again but it moved awfully slow. Is that just because of all of us taking our sweet ass time? Or is that just inherant when playing Power Grid on a forum?

It's certainly one of the slower forum games, but compared to it's FtF length it's not terrible.  I think if all players were on top of things, taking actions consistently (multiple times a day), then the game could move at a decent clip.

I think of things like Terra Mystica where Game 1 took just over a month, while game 2 took 2.5 months.
Or Mage Knight where game 1 finished in 3 months, and Game 2 didn't even finish a third of the game in that time.

Anyways, point is that player dynamics have a significant impact on the length of the game.

I'll open another one for sign-ups next Monday.

Regarding PbF-length vs. FtF length, this game took 6 months, with 2 of those hiatus due to Galzria's disappearance.  So, total active time was about 4 months.
Le Havre by comparison took about 3 months.

I think that would be my expectation for Power Grid in general, one game would take about 3-4 months.

Cool. Well auto-in me please! In the meantime I'll study up on rules and strategy.

Yeah, I didn't know that this was the final turn...I sort of expected the next one would be the last one. Probably would have helped to start counting, but, well, you know. Still getting a feel for the pacing of the game, and yeah playing a bit faster probably would help. But it was pretty fun! I'd definitely /in for another.

Wait, doesn't someone have to build to 17 to end the game?

How many is it in 5 player? 15? damn. that makes some of my prior actions pretty bad choices. I thought I was winning here.

Yes, 15 in 5P.  It's in the second post, though I had to check for myself multiple times in the last couple of rounds.

Yeah I figured I wouldn't be able to win here. GG Kirian! This game is pretty fun. After playing the first few rounds, I even bought it IRL.
