RMM11: A Grimm Tale (Game Over- Town Wins!)
« on: September 24, 2013, 06:00:41 pm »

RMM11: A Grimm Tale
In a dusty old library, twelve friends gather around an ancient storybook. With a turn of a page, the book begins to glow brightly. In a blast of light, these twelve souls are sucked from the real world into a fairy tale.

And they decide to play a game of Mafia.

Signups:

1. pingpongsam
2. ashersky Wolf-aligned 'Big Bad' Godfather/Ninja.
Lynched Day 1.
3. Voltgloss ashersky
4. EFHW Witch-aligned 'Maleficent' 2-shot Watcher Killed Day 2.
5. mail-mi
6. faust
7. xeiron
8. XerxesPraelor Town-aligned 'Prince Charming' Bodyguard Killed Night 3
9. BoxOfDog
10. Jimmmmm Town-aligned 'The Woodcutter' Lumberjack-of-all-trades Killed Night 3
11. Morgrim7 Town-aligned 'Tom Thumb' Compulsive Hider OR Rewarded Doctor Lynched Day 3.
12. chairs

The following Rules of Mafia will be used but with these changes:

- An action may be sent N0 if your role allows it.
- Any action not sent by deadline will default to 'No Action'
- Prods will not be issued automatically
- A 'No Lynch' will occur if by deadline there is a tie for most votes

In addition, we will be using 10 Day day deadlines and 48 hour night deadlines. I may start the night early if all actions are in.

This is a Role Madness game. This means that every player in the game will have some sort of power role. As such, this game will have a heavier emphasis on roles than intense social deduction. However, players will still be able to scumhunt, make cases, etc.

--

Now, here's how the game will work. In addition to each player receiving a power role, they will also be given a link to a quicktopic. The first post of this messaging board will be a short passage. Some parts of this passage will be pure flavor, but others will drop tidbits of information about the game's setup. However, the passage won't come right and say what's important. It'll be written vaguely and the player can interpret the story however they wish. The rest of the quicktopic can be used to talk about the game, musing over clues in your passage, etc. All QTs will be revealed at the end of the game and up until that point will only be seen by the mod's eyes.

Setup Information:

- The game's roles will be entirely based on famous and common storybook characters from a variety of fairytales. Not just those written by the Grimm brothers.
- This game is so flavorful it's ridiculous. However, you don't have to know the fairytale beforehand to fully use the role (though I suggest you at least look it up).
- Scum will not be immediately outed if they are forced to claim.
- The Town wincon is: "You win when all threats to the Town have been eliminated".
- Don't try to outguess the mod
- This shouldn't be the first game you play on f.ds.

Sample PM:

Quote
Flavor Name: Hansel
Alignment: Town. You win when all threats to the Town have been eliminated.
Role Name: Trackable Tracker

Banished from your house by your mother, you and your sister travel throughout the woods in hopes of someone rescuing you. Will someone pick up on your hints and help?

Each night you may target one player. You will be told the names of any and all players that player targeted that night. You will drop "breadcrumbs" on the way over to tracking them. Whenever someone targets you, they will follow your most recent trail of breadcrumbs and be told the name of the player you must recently targeted. They will not be told that you Tracked them.

Quicktopic Link: [LINK]

Sample Storybook Passage:

Quote
At dawn, the dark rider rises to hunt it's prey. With fire in the heart and fire in the hearth, it rides onwards to Town. It's power is matched only by the one in green. He alone controls the flames and can move them at the flick of a wrist.

I didn't plan on signing up for another game for awhile, but my fingers typed "in" before I could stop them.

Well halfway full with a whole lot of taggers. Awesome! That's much more than expected right out of the gate! Twistedarcher has looked over the game's roles, but I'll leave him tell you what he thinks of the roles.

Yes, as much as I'd love to have another person signup, I'd strongly suggest you have at least one other game under your belt before signing up. Have you had previous Mafia experience?

For a preemptive action, I've added the following rules:

- Players cannot 'No Lynch' on consecutive days.
- If there is a tie for most votes at the end of the day, a 'No Lynch' will occur.

Okay let me clarify this: Let's say we no-lynch day 2. On day 3, at deadline, there is a tie for most votes. Do we no-lynch, or what happens?

Yes.

Hm. Actually, I'll let people No Lynch as much as they want. That'll probably be a lot simpler than putting in some weird unique vote system.

I think you've been doing just great, Eevee! But if you want to take a break then that's perfectly alright.

Thread Locked.

Roles are going out now. Your role will be 'confirmed' by posting in any of your provided QTs or by replying back to me. Day 1 will start when all but one player has 'confirmed'.

Remember the rules about sharing information! You cannot quote or copy+paste parts of your Role PM or share any QT links, but there are no limits for how little or how much setup info you want to share from your personal QT. Just be careful of what you share...

Old Man Grimm warned the local kids about the abandoned library at the edge of the lane. He said its haunted and it's too dangerous for kids to go into. Psh, as if! Danger like that only exists in stories!

On Halloween night, 12 friends grabbed as many flashlights and batteries as they could hold and decided to see what the big hubbub was about this 'haunted library'. The door opened with a creak and the friends all piled inside. To their dismay, all the shelves were empty of books. But on a pedestal, illuminated by the distant moon, a large book sat open. The group gathered around it to see what it was all about.

All at once, they read "Once upon a time..."

In a flutter of pages and a flash of light, the friends disappeared from the mortal world into a world of myth and magic. A world where battle lines are drawn and the battle of good and evil rages on. A world of danger that only exists in stories. But which side of the fight did these friends choose to fight on? Read on, reader. Read on...

Well, this is exciting.  Did anybody else read their QT yet? Since there are hints in there, you really should if you haven't.

I'm still puzzling over mine to determine what's hint and what's flavor.

The trick is how do we balance sharing our QTs with not giving scum too much of it? After all, in the setup information it's hinted that sharing our QT data could conceivably provide scum with assistance.

Ash is like a dog with a bone.  I said "when we get to Day 1 should we suggest we pool our clues?".  He says that means I am intending only to suggest it, not to do it, or else I would have said ""should we pool our clues" or "should we put our clues in the thread" to him.  My meaning was should we start the discussion.  He can say if I left anything out, but that's the gist of it so far as I can tell.

PPE I see Jimmmm is now asking for this answer

Last time I was in a Role Madness game and floated the idea of everyone sharing certain private information, I was SK in Major Arcana I, trying to suss out people's suits so I could figure out who to kill to power myself up.  And I approached it in the same "hey, maybe should we talk about this" vein as EFHW apparently has done here.

So ash has a point.

Efhw's admission earlier is correct.  She used scum QT wording in a neighbor QT.

Here's a mini-plan.  This game is uberflavorful.  Go find a list of Grimm baddies.  Big bad wolf, evil witch, the rat guy, etc.  maybe we can match up our personal clues with something.

Ah.  So you suspect EFHW's suggestion was something she typed up for a scum QT, but accidentally used in your neighbor QT?

This isn't a bad idea (along with wolves and witches, Rumpelstiltskin and wicked stepmothers come to mind), but:

- The game's roles will be entirely based on famous and common storybook characters from a variety of fairytales. Not just those written by the Grimm brothers.

I don't think we should limit ourselves to Grimm.

I am not convinced EFHW is scum. Wording can be very individual, and does not neeed to indicate alignment.
Not that I will dismiss the case either. But I won't jump on the wagon right now.

Vote: XerxesPraelor. Not RVS. Can't say why.

I will instead follow up on this interesting post from Jim.

I think the character stuff you guys are thinking about isn't exactly accurate.

He could make any ol' baddie character from Grimm tales or otherwise, a townie.
Just throwing that out there, so that you don't lynch Rumple or something, and it turns out that he had some sort of role as a townie.. I dunno.

I'm trying to be cautious with that, is all :I

It would be nice if jimm could say more about it.

ash/Volt/other vets, I heard once (in DS9 I believe) that Neighbourhoods tend to have at least one scum in them. Do you believe this is more likely true than not. I'm leaning towards there being a greater than average chance that our QT contains (at least) one scum.

This is a closed RMM set-up.  Impossible to figure the likelihood here since we don't know total # of scum in the game or how many neighborhoods or how neighbors were selected.

I think we have scum in our QT based on EFHW being in our QT.

At first I didn't see any reason not to, but now I'm realizing scum could really throw us off track.  On the other hand, my clue contains info I think would be important to share.  So I'm going to share that part of my clue.  Other people can decide what they want to do with theirs.

The existence of a thief in Innovation was town's downfall, so I think it's important for us to know there is one here.

How do you even know if there's a doctor?

Two votes is "ramping up votes"?

AFAICT my PM has nothing mysterious about it. It is straight up role description.

I don't. I should have said "a power role".

No, my role is a Grimm character and as such the role description itself is flavorful. However, there is nothing extraneous to the role description. That is, I would be hard pressed to post any portion of it and not reveal the function if not entirety of the role. That said, I have very good reason to believe Archetype selected this very specific flavor name just for me personally. Maybe my mystery lies in that fact, then.

Yes. It was so damned mysterious I guess I ignored it. I just reread it and it is entirely ponderous. I will cross-examine that with what we have posted already.

Mine speaks of a king so I am assuming it is in reference to xerxespraelor. "His curse is what started all this terror and turmoil, and it is that which will soon end it all."

Mine talks about how spelling is super important and says that knowledge is power. Maybe this is saying EFHW is town, but I doubt it actually deals with our names. (wouldn't that be more BM?)

Then what do you make of ashersky's post of "flavor" that clearly implicates EFHW?

I'm still interested to hear what people think about pooling clues.  What are the risks, are there benefits, etc.  I always lean on the side of wanting more information, but maybe that's not a good idea here?

There is something in my QT that I think gives us an important piece of information. But I don't think it'd be helpful to disclose it today, I want to wait till D2 with it.

Is your flavor character associated to the color red?

Interesting. Except...

- Scum will not be immediately outed if they are forced to claim.

Assuming you're telling the truth, I can assure you, the person you're talking about knows full well not to associate themself with an axe. Things are never that easy, nor should they be.

It also says that two others are in the forest. Two other axes, or two other neighbors?

Perhaps two other neighbours, at least one other axe if you're telling the truth.

Think about it. In a game of Mafia, designed around intrigue and deceit, do you really think that you would be told, "someone with an axe is scum", and you ask who has an axe, and that scum immediately outs himself? What's gone wrong here? Has Arch neglected to give me a safe flavour claim, or have I neglected to use it?

An ax that resides in the forest threatening to destroy it.

Did you copy-paste this?
no.

Does the word ax/e always, never or sometimes contain an 'e' in your flavour?

its only once, and it has an e.

It says "an axe that lives in the forest wants to destroy it." Good enough for a Day 1 vote from me.

I disagree. Do you think you've caught scum, or don't you?

Can you please copy paste the whole QT flavour immediately?!
Now that you add new parts to your flavour whenever new information shows up I cannot decide if you are faking it.

Yes, you can copy pasye from QT, but not from pm.

I think Jimm has something to answer for.

He seems to know something about Xerxes
He has a QT.
He is flavor related to an Axe.
He seems to know something about someone related to the color blue.
He seems to know something related to fire.

This I quite much for a single person.

With mail-mi saying an axe in the forest is possibly scum, it is hard to let that pass.

Serious? Arch clearly said that if forced to claim, scum wouldn't be outed. If the indication given to mail-mi was that someone with an Axe was scum, and if that scum was me, then we have mod-confirmation that I would be given some sort of indication that I shouldn't claim to have an axe ie a fake flavour claim. Obviously the alternative is that flavour simply doesn't indicate alignment, but if mail-mi was correctly told that someone who is scum has an axe, then that's clearly false.

We should keep in mind there may also be a thief, and Jimmmmm's axe could be stolen and used for evil.  I think we should avoid mentioning any objects in our flavor as much as possible.  mail-mi asking about axes could mean that he  wants the axe for himself as part of his role.

Upon rereading, this episode is starting to make sense from a town/town perspective.
Mail-mi says the axe will destroy "the colossal foliage". He naturally took this to mean the enchanted forest, but I think maybe we are talking about something else.
My QT also mentiones foliage. And with a little imagination, I think it is the type that makes sense for a goodguy to destroy while hunting the person assosiated with the color blue.
Wording matters!

Actually I am getting quite a strong townread on jimm.
I also have a townread on mail-mi and faust.

I'm getting a town read on Jimmmmm, I've left my vote there thinking if he were scum it would go no where. This developing wagon reeks of scum. I think chairs just sheeped me and didn't catch the sarcasm in his post same as I. mail-mi and ashersky's rationale for joining are the scummiest. xerxes' comes off more as OMGUS. I don't have strong scum reads on any one on this wagon but I feel certain scum is on it and it is not me and likely not chairs and I'll give xerxes a neutral on this one.  mail-mi seems too enthusiastic to twist his flavor against Jimmmmm. ashersky seems like he may be the axe thief.

Are you choosing to ignore this?

- Scum will not be immediately outed if they are forced to claim.

I am not.  I don't see how this has ANYTHING to do with what you are accused of, man.

You were not forced to claim.
You were NOT forced to claim.
You were not asked to claim.

How does this relate?  You admitted to having an AXE.  What good guy has an AXE?  (Don't say Paul Bunyan).  That has nothing to do with being forced to claim.  You could have just not said anything.

I mean, you may be town, and so you thought it was best to say you have an axe.  Or you may be scum who thought it'd seem better to admit you it so you could look like you were town.  It's like if there's a Big Bad Wolf in the game, and he/she decided to just claim to be the Big Bad Wolf and say that flavor name is town, since why the hell would you claim to be the Big Bad Wolf in the first place, right?

So you deciding to just straight up claim something scummy seems like a great move by master scum, which we all know you to be.

As for your mod quote there, I think it just means that whatever is claimed won't give away alignment.  It's not like someone going to go "derpity-derp I'm a ninja godfather Big Bad Wolf derp" or something.

I have no reason to believe Archetype had to provide fake claims to the players.  As a mod, I only did it on request, and only in games where it might matter.  I think you mentioned what you mentioned because it is in your scum PM.

I was on the ashersky wagon before it was cool.

This is correct, and you get bonus points.

Jimmmmm is OMGUSing, the others are just piling on an easy (as usual) mislynch.

My QT also mentiones foliage. And with a little imagination, I think it is the type that makes sense for a goodguy to destroy while hunting the person assosiated with the color blue.

For the record, I'm not certain but I believe this person to be good.

Babe, the Blue Ox?  Are you seriously going with Paul Bunyan?

The self-vote is huge WIFOM. You were so invited to do it in RMM9 and refused even though it would have been a great ploy. I'm inclined to interpret it as a Town indicator but I am suspicious that you've decided to cash in on such a long cultivated ruse as well.

I have reason to believe that a much bigger threat to the Forest is in the form of fire.

If this is in reference to the clue in our QT, I disagree.

I really don't think that getting all excited over a scumslip should necessarily mean that Ashes is scum. I see it as being hungry for something to build a wagon off of, which I dont think is all that bad.

Vote: ashersky for getting over-excited over a supposed scumslip and thinking the setup is designed for us to catch scum super-easily when a vet should know better.
Aren't you kind of doing what you are accusing Ashes of doing? This is a really terrible reason to vote for someone, so, ya know, you just kinda got a lot scummier IMO. One more thing to provoke thought, could he be possibly trying to get a quick lynch cause he's scum? Just saying.

Gimli, not applicable.  LOTR is epic fantasy, not fairy tale.

Well, isn't that interesting.

I think mail-mi's text passage is a quite strong sign that Jimmmmm may be scum. Remember what it says? "There are two others." Which would be his scum partners.

Vote: Jimmmmm

Also, could everyone who hasn't already done so answer my question (or at least state that they're not willing to)?

Are you choosing to ignore this?

- Scum will not be immediately outed if they are forced to claim.

I am not.  I don't see how this has ANYTHING to do with what you are accused of, man.

You were not forced to claim.
You were NOT forced to claim.
You were not asked to claim.

How does this relate?  You admitted to having an AXE.  What good guy has an AXE?  (Don't say Paul Bunyan).  That has nothing to do with being forced to claim.  You could have just not said anything.

Oh semantics. Yes I was not actually forced to claim. But I did. And I'm going to go ahead and say that I am The Woodcutter.

If you think I'm scum, then you must feel really good about the chances of catching whatever other scum there are. Let's just claim all flavour, and somehow each scum will be outed by another person's flavour because, hey, Mafia is a boring old game in which the mod tells people how to catch scum and all we have to do is compare notes.

If you really truly believe that Arch told mail-mi that scum has an axe, and I am that scum and did not know better than to out myself, then I expect much better from you, especially as someone who is good at designing games of Mafia.

Seriously, if you were in the position you think I'm in, you would be quitting right about now.

I disagree with your assessment.  You had zero reason to mention the axe at all, so mail-mi knowing an axe-wielder is scum had no real power without a claim.  You could have lied or kept quiet.  Another likely scenario is someone else had an axe.  Or there are multiple axes.  Or there is a flavor cop.

So I disagree with you that the scenario I laid out would make archetype a bad mod or game designer.  I think you just spoke too soon.

As for "the woodcutter," please enlighten us to whatever fairy tale that comes from.

Oh, so scum won't be immediately outed if forced to claim, but they will instead gladly out themselves on Day 1 with no pressure?

If I was "forced" to claim, I would have nothing to say but Woodcutter, and we'd have the exact same discussion.

Well I'm assuming it's the one from Little Red Riding Hood, but my PM doesn't say one way or another.

I addressed this.  I said outing yourself now could mean you are town, or you did it to seem like town, because scum has no reason to out themselves.  Basically, I'm accusing you of "hiding in plain sight."

I don't know of a woodcutter in that tale.  There's a girl, a wolf, a grandma...then the girl outsmarts the wolf and fills it's belly full of rocks.  No woodcutter.

Jimmmmm, you stated earlier that you believe "fire" to be the danger to the forest.  Can you explain?

Woodcutter and Fire don't seem to match up.

It's a danger. It concerns me because I don't want my Forest to be set on fire.

If you don't mind, I would like everyone to answer the following question:

Is your flavor character associated to the color red?

This one?  Why do you ask?

It might be helpful to find scum/clear town players, is all I can say.

The view from the edge of the forest is one to behold. Looking deep into it, you can see the thicket of massive trees and the few berry bushes decorating the land. An axe resides in the forest and threatens to destroy the colossal foliage. Two others are present, as well. Though their story isnít discussed until later.

What does this really say?

A) There is a forest. We know the neighborhood QT is named "Enchanted Forest."
B) Someone with an axe lives in the forest, along with two others. That would be ash/EFHW/Jimmmmm, the neighbors.
C) It is hard to see in the forest, but the axe (=Jimmmmm) could destroy the "foliage". More than Jimmmmm being scum, this points to Jimmmmm having some investigative power for me.

In fact, vote: ashersky. Maybe he doesn't want the covering foliage of the forest destroyed and this is why he pushes Jimmmmm so hard.

Townpoints for mail-mi though for trying to use this for scumhunting, even if I think now that it was misled.

I think the foliage stands for an obstructed view, and that if it is cleared, we might see who the players living in the forest really are (i.e. town or scum). And that ashersky doesn't want that to happen.

I agree that mail-mi's part in this is more likely scumhunting than trickery.

Your 180 is hilarious.

Your interpretation is...a stretch?  If Jimmmmm is a cop, you just did a heck of a lot of out him.  That was anti-town at best, scummy at worst.
