From RioGrande's site:

Quote
All kingdom cards from the sets were chosen by Donald with an eye toward interesting and fast rounds. The players commented that this goal had been met. In the final round, Ryo got a huge round of applause from his opponents and the spectators for his 4 Province gain in one round. Most games lasted 20-30 minutes. We will plan to post the deck designs for both the WM tournament and for the Gencon qualifying tournament in the near future.

We'll just have to wait a bit.

I know I do. But then I finished second to last. Or as it says in my diploma "Conquered the 15th place".

The guy from Belgium (Braam Spruyt) is a good friend of mine and I watched the tournament a little. He reached the semi-finals, but got a little unlucky then. He's a lvl 28 player I think (Ixius on isotropic), but he's never been on the forum. The games I watched, the level of play was quite poor with people buying multiple terminal actions constantly instead of money, except for the winning Japanese player who was really good.

I never got to play the Belgian guy due to falling victim to unplanned rescheduling of the player positions. I have to agree with Geronimoo on the pretty poor level of the players. But then, I consider myself somewhat better than quite a few of the players there, based on the performance I saw at WM. HOWEVER, I played badly and got screwed by shuffle luck, so I guess I can't really judge anybody fairly.

The Japanese guy was by far the best player present and crushed all opposition. He finished first in every single game.

From what I read, it seems like he bought 4 Provinces in one turn in the final, getting applause and oohs and aahs from the crowd.
So it seems like a deserving winner.

I watched the Belgium at the Dutch championships and he seemed (beside me of course ;), got 3 firsts and then kicked out by Swindler/Sabpteur extravaganza) the best of the bunch.
Even in that final I saw someone willingly discard 2 cards (he had $8!) to Torturer while he had Masquerade in hand, so he could pass the Curse.

@Donald X. - any particular reason why you had each set as an even split of two expansions? Bizarrely that's exactly how I've been experimenting with making the tables recently.

For one, that's how he tends to playtest, so he would be much more familiar with the interactions between any two expansions (or, you know, the base) than between 3 or more.

I ended in second place, so I know what happened in the final ;).

The Japanese guy got a super Horn of Plenty-turn and got 4 provinces in a turn, so it was a deserved winner. I got an unlucky start in the final, so I'm not really sure if I could have won if I'd been luckier. I probably misplayed a bit anyway (I'm not very good with HoP).

The japanese guy said he played on isotropic as well, but I don't remember his online name.

Regarding the skill of the players, certainly quite a few of them wasn't exceptionally good, but it's hard to really see who is good and who is not from few games, luck plays too big a part. For instance I ended second to a Coppersmith/Great Hall opening my second game, which cannot be the correct opening.

Nice to hear that the competition was pretty stiff, at least :)

That's too bad that you didn't remember his name.  Do you happen to see it anywhere on the online leaderboard?

I didn't! For GenCon, I only had 3 Alchemy cards and 4 Cornucopia cards in those sets, and of course there are sets of 10 from each large expansion.

I went 5 and 5 just to maximize how much I was mixing the expansions. I went 6/4 for Cornucopia because Cornucopia has fewer cards and I didn't want to get the same combinations too much. For Alchemy I went 7/3 because there were some Alchemy cards I was avoiding and so it was the same problem only worse. I didn't combine three sets at once because the games were irl and you know, you have to deal with all of the boxes of cards.

For Essen, Jay specified in advance what the mix of expansions was, including how many cards from each, so I just followed the program. If I had gotten to pick the sets there I would have had Hinterlands in every game, because hey, show what you can do with the new cards.

Those are pretty good kingdoms that Donald has pulled out of the bag, unsurprisingly. You could stare at some of them all day and not really work out the best strategy. There aren't many attack cards but they all hit just right spot, hurting a power strategy but with some defences as well. Strategy will change with the number of players too. If anyone was organising a local tournament I'd firstly suggest fully random cards, but if someone really needed prepared kingdoms I'd suggest using those. Don't reveal them until the tournament starts though.

I don't know how it was at GenCon, but at Essen there were four tables with three players and one table with four players for each round until the Prosperity round where there were only three tables with three players at each. Personaly I would've preferred four tables with four players at each to make it as fair as possible. However being the fourth player at a table with four players is worse than being at the third seat in a three player game.

At our Swedish Nationals the first four rounds were basic box only. There were to be 10 possible set-ups, and one was to be randomly picked for each round. Five of the set-ups were from the suggested kingdoms in the instruction booklet, and five were games created by participants. All ten sets were revealed during the day of the tournament, but only four were randomly picked. In the semi finals and finals, the kingdoms were randomized between all the sets.

Lekkit, at Swedish Nationals, I know they said the ten sets would be revealed beforehand, which struck me as the most idiotic way possible of having a Dominion tournament, and part of the reason why I didn't go (also I was sick and stuff).

Btw my buddy, who reached the semifinals, said you played well :)

Interestingly my 4th player rating is much higher than my any other starting position rating.

@Fabian: I thought they announced the 10 sets at Dragon's Lair the day of the tournament. I could be wrong. Anyways, since it was only the basic box, the kingdoms wouldn't really matter that much. I think something like they did at GenCon or Essen would be more fun, but then it was a question of economy for Dragon's Lair. They couldn't really open a box of each game for each table. And, btw, I guess your buddy is Görling, and he was one of the best players present. For a period of time I was pretty sure he was going to win the tournament.

That's probably true, but they did say before the tournament that all sets would be announced ahead of time, to "give people a chance to practice" (ugh)

Your guess is right, that's my buddy. Too bad I couldn't be there, next year you'll get tougher opposition :p
