The reason WW loves Doctor sooooo much...

My opponent is P1 and opens 2/5 (FG/Haggler).  The board lacks FG help (no +buy, no way to draw a bunch in hand, Haggler let's you gain FG with something else), but there's not much else here.  I briefly think about Embargoing FG, but there's just nothing to build towards except maybe Haggler BM with Sage support, but that's not going to be fast when I'm building up from 3/4.

So I think, Doctor!  I whiff a few times, but on Turn 8, I buy a second Doctor and overpay by 11.  Then it's Province - Province - Province - Duchy - Province - Duchy - Duchy - Province.

Was there a better way to win this?  Seems like this is what Doctor is made for.

Just a quick rules check (I haven't read the log to see if it came up) - if I overpay for Dr. With Trader in hand, I can get the overbuy benefit (when buy) and then Trade the Dr. for a Silver (when would gain), right?

Buying is resolved before gaining (and thats where trader triggers), so I would say yes.

More to the OP - I like the Doctor use here! I am curious to see the discussion between the early Dr. camp (proved marginally effective) and the big overpay Dr. camp (proved very effective).
I also think his forrays into Sage and skipping early FG buys hurt him pretty badly.

Thanks! I don't trust myself with Trader questions, having goofed them often enough.

Doctor is FG support, because it is trashing.  You ended up using FG in the end too, and you won the split! :P

Unfortunately your opponent probably lost because he bought a doctor.

This can work situationally, and it's quite amazing when it does, but it's still only situational. I've failed many times attempting to play for a big Doctor turn.
