I got tricked

I got tricked!

There was this game with the title "5000+" and I joined it. Then I found out the host was only around 4700 himself, but I was too confused to leave the game before he started it. It was a tie game and I lost 31 rating.  >:(

It's not much of a trick...

I mean, you tied with a lower ranked player, so you lost points.

Besides, don't you lose like 31 points every night at midnight anyway?

But it is! I thought I was going to play someone over 5k but then he wasn't.

I'm pretty sure his 5k+ means that those who join should be 5k+, not that he necessarily is. I'd say it's a fair thing to do. More importantly though, who gives a shit?

When I do that, someone else joins instead.

I'd say it's disingenuous, if not exactly dishonest.

Unless the player in question was at one of those areas where he lost several hundred rating points in the last couple games, and perhaps didn't realize that he had fallen so much lower? Shrug.

Sure, that's definitely a possibility. Usually I keep pretty good track of my (Casual) rating as I win and lose games, but not everybody is me. Most people aren't.

I also only host games and I don't (yet) stipulate a minimum rating, so I guess I don't really have a horse in this race.

Sometimes I like to create games with "7k+" in the title, just to intimidate/amuse everyone for a moment and appear ultra-exclusive  :P

Of course the solution to this is to have an actual matching system.

While I sympathize with Awaclus feeling duped (I'd feel that way myself too), I also think that as the host of a game where you essentially let others leech of your purchase, you have the right to set whatever entry requirements you wish (as long as they're legal), and I certainly sympathize with people wanting to play better opponents. I learn more from 3 games against Stef than from 30 games against randoms.

Well, technically, it's not dishonest since he didn't claim to be 5k+. He just wanted someone with that rating or higher.

Kind of like if a chunky man posts on a dating website, "No fatties."

But I can understand the assumption that is someone is looking for someone of a certain skill level then he has that certain skill level.

Although, WW's suggestion has merit. Maybe the guy didn't even realize that his score dropped. Or maybe he forgot to change his message. It might not even be intentional.

If the point is to find someone of appropriate skill (so that it's not an unfun one-sided match) then it still worked out, right?  He won, after all.

According to the OP, it was a tie.
