So how do I get into the 4000+ range?
« on: July 13, 2013, 09:54:42 pm »

I recently decided to give goko a try and ran into the problem that my pro rating was 0 and so no one wanted to play with me. (Also, for some reason my quit % is 12% maybe from the adventures? Not sure what's going on here because I'm pretty sure I haven't quit that often).
Based on what I read here I figured I needed to play the bots to get my rating up. After an embarrassing not-high win rate for a while (I only have base on goko and I'd forgotten how dominant BM is in base-only games) I've beaten the bots enough that I'm rated at 3693, but I just beat defender bot again and my rating actually dropped 5 points!  :o
How am I supposed to get any higher if beating the bots no longer increases my rating? Help!

Play real people.

Maybe buy the expansions. The bots are not good with some strategies, although some strategies they can dominate quite well.

That drop by 5 points must be some sort of a fluke. Maybe it was a tie? 5-point drop would sound quite the expected result for that. Or then it was some sort of a bug.

Anyway, you can fairly easily reach 4500-5000 if you keep on beating the bots. Even at 4500+ ratings you should expect to get something like +30 points or more for every win (and maybe -60 or so for a loss, so you need to win fairly often). Also, note that the different bots have very different ratings. Play against the ones that have higher (probably Defender, Banker, Conqueror).

I think you might be right. I was second player and it listed me first when it listed the results, but looking back on it I think the game ended on my turn. Sorry for the false information  :-[

I would much prefer to play with the expansions, but I'm just not confident enough in goko to spend some of my (not very much) money on them online. That's why I wanted to get my rating up high enough to play real people (hopefully f.ds/iso people) who might have the expansions.

Thanks for your help!

Depending on whether I'm watching porn while I play, I rate between 5k and 6k, and would not turn down a 3693 person sitting down at my table.

You could probably start playing real people again, or just do casual or unrated games for a while to get your confidence up if you really must.

the others have covered goko related ways to get over 4000, but if you are looking to improve your play consider reading some of the articles on this page.

I've played a few real games now, but finding people to play on goko is pretty frustrating. It doesn't seem like there are very many open games at all, especially since I've avoided casual since people can rig those kingdoms, right? 4 million lobbies and lack of an automatch is just stupid.

Thanks. I've actually been reading the articles for a while. I was level 30ish on iso when it went down, but I haven't played nearly as much since then, and playing the bots with base only is harder I think because they're more likely to pick the best strategy on the board (especially since it's very frequently BM)

I haven't bought any expansions. Last time I checked I was roughly 3000, but its been awhile. I started playing early on Goko when people would play a game regardless of level. Makes it a whole lot easier to mooch of people's cards get a game with non-base cards.

I'd say you take others advice of either buying the expansions or just beating up the bots until you've ranked high enough. Another option is to sit in a lobby and then ninja-click-join a game that looks like its being hosted by someone with cards (those non-standard knight avatars are dead giveaways).

Automatch won't help you. Nobody will take your games.

One problem with Goko vs. Iso is that the expansion-purchase bit increases the skill gap. On Iso I tried to avoid lvl ~10 folks, but I'd play them. On Goko, playing low-level opponents tends to be aggravating and unfun for both parties because, more often than not, they are base players who have to read all the cards first and play both slowly and terribly.

Play Conqueror Bot exclusively. He's by far the best bot and I think also the highest rated (low 4kish?). If you can't get your rating to high 4k-low 5k from playing him, you're making alot of mistakes. In that case, post some games you lost that weren't obviously due to bad luck in the help section.

Will this work with base? I am not sure.

I'm not sure either, as I have very little experience with Base only games. I also just saw that Conqueror has a rating of ~3500 instead of the ~4100 when I last checked, so that makes it even harder. 4k+ should still be doable though?

Their ratings fluctuate. Pick whichever one is highest rated at the time. I've seen that be Conqueror Bot and Lord Bottington, but also Banker Bot once in a while.

It does. I've played quite a bit against the bots (I tend to play during times I cannot guarantee sufficiently quick response times for a real opponent), first with Base only and then with all sets after Guilds was released. Maintaining a rating above 4500 was easy in both  cases.

The bots are perhaps on average a bit stronger on Base only, but then again one will learn their obvious strategies more quickly. If there's, for example, workshop and gardens in the kingdom, you will win for sure after realizing the bot always takes the 1st Gardens too late. And yes, that will be boring.

Eh bots on all base really aren't that bad.  I'd put them at least ~500 points better than they're rated at in all base.  Unless there is Spy in the kingdom.  Spy in the kingdom against a bot is basically an auto-win.
